Atlanta Falcons: Parker Wilson waived, Peters on injured list (updated)

Vivlamore reporting from Flowery Branch. Here is your Falcons report following Sunday’s practice.

FLOWERY BRANCH –The Falcons  placed defensive tackle Corey Peters on the reserve/non-football injury list and waived quarterback John Parker Wilson Sunday, trimming their roster to 75 players. Peters will not be eligible to return to the active roster until after Week 6 of the regular season.

Peters has not participated this preseason due to a foot injury suffered away from the team’s training facility prior to the start of training camp. Peters has started 30 of 31  games over the past two seasons and recorded 73 tackles (57 solo), four sacks, one interception, one fumble recovery and three passes defensed. The earliest Peters could return would be Oct. 28 against the Eagles, following the Falcons bye week.

Wilson was originally signed as a college free agent in 2009 out of Alabama. He has been on the team’s practice squad and was the No. 3 quarterback the past two seasons.

Unless the Falcons bring in another quarterback, Dominique Davis earned a spot on the roster behind Matt Ryan and Chris Redman. Davis, an undrafted rookie free agent, has impressed the coaching staff during training camp. He threw a 39-yard touchdown pass to Tim Toone in Friday’s exhibition win at the Dolphins.

The Falcons were required to cut down to 75 players by 4 p.m. Monday.

Playing time for Dent

Starting middle linebacker Akeem Dent saw his first extended action of the preseason in Friday’s exhibition game against the Dolphins, taking about 30 snaps with the base and sub packages.

Dent missed most of the first and all of the second exhibition game with a concussion. It was important to get Dent on the field in game situations, according to coach Mike Smith.

“We wanted to get him a little work, especially in our sub package,” Smith said following Sunday’s practice. “It was a good experience for him because he hasn’t done it in a game. … We needed to get that evaluation done and I think he did a nice job.”

Dent had three tackles against the Dolphins. He figures to be one starter to see some more time in Thursday’s exhibition finale at the Jaguars.

“Things went pretty good,” Dent said. “I still have some things to work on but overall things went well. [There is] technique stuff I need to shore up.”

Injury report

Wide receiver Kevin Cone (concussion) returned to full contact practice Sunday. Smith said he will play in the exhibition finale.

Cornerback Christopher Owens (hamstring), running back Jason Snelling (lower right leg) and defensive tackle Corey Peters (foot) continued to work with trainers. Safety Shann Schillinger (foot) and wide receiver Kerry Meier (leg) did not participate.

Cornerback Asante Samuel was excused from practice for a personal reason.

Starters or no starters?

Smith said he has not yet determined if starters will play against the Jaguars.

“I can speak historically, we’ve had games where we’ve seen them and we’ve had games where we have not seen them,” Smith said. “We’ll make that decision and finalize it in the next 48 hours. We still have some things that we need to get done. Hopefully we can get them done on the practice field but if not we’ll get them done in the game.”

Too many flags

Penalties are still plaguing the Falcons this preseason. They committed eight penalties for 40 yards in Friday’s exhibition victory over the Dolphins. In three exhibition games this preseason, the Falcons have 29 penalties for 282 yards. The number of infractions is tied for third in the NFL this preseason (going into Sunday’s game) and the total yardage leads all teams.

Last season, the Falcons were 23rd in the NFL with 93 penalties.

Etc.

* Thomas DeCoud had his second interception of the preseason with a pick against the Dolphins. DeCoud led the Falcons in interceptions last season with four, all of which came inside the Falcons’ 20-yard line.

* Matt Bryant kicked a 51-yard field goal with 1:46 remaining in the first half against the Dolphins. It was the longest road field goal Bryant has hit during his 11-year NFL career. It also tied his longest field goal as a Falcon.

Please tell me that DD will get at least one series behind the starters DLed? Also please tell me he is pushing Redman to third string…..if not I will have some questions about Mike Smith.

Really? Come on guys you get paid for this stuff. It took me 3 seconds to look up that he hit a 62 yard fg in 2006.I remember that one because it was a game winner for them.

Wish JPW well, but Davis is the better choice and I bet he pushes Redman…..I hope he keeps it up, and we have a high caliber backup…..

Smith. The knoxk on dd is he is just the opposite…..he’s very quiet and doesn’t take command…..he’s still lacks confidence and that’s probably the only Toni g holding him back from being Ryan’s backup….with another year. Hell be awesome

If not for Jerry stepping up, I’d be more concerned about Peters. Still would like him to get healthy and be ready after Week 6. Elated that John Parker Wilson is finally gone. Doubt if he catches on elsewhere…would be very surprised. I knew after Davis’ TD to Toone that JPW’s days were over. I dont think he even saw any action vs. MIA. Writing was on the wall then.

DD will win the backup position this week. We can put Redmond on pratice squad no team is going to pick him up. That will allow us to pickup a additional offensive lineman or linebacker. This will also allow Davis to get more practice snaps with the 1st team during preparation weeks.

JPW getting waived by the Falcons is not a surprise. He was not talented and the Falcons staff have proven they are not great at developing talent. Chris Redman has been outplayed by an undrafted rookie free agent QB. What does this tell you about the talk about his NFL experience? This coaching staff needs to put the best players on their 53 man roster. D. Davis deserves a fair shot at the number two backup QB spot. On another note, the SF 49ers are loaded with talent on both sides of the ball. The Falcons need to pay close attention to their waiver list in the upcoming days.

I’m glad DD has made the team, but you can’t have an undrafted rookie as second string. Let’s not get ahead of ourselves; Redman has shown he can come in and win a game if needed, so let’s leave him at #2 for now. DD will be there soon enough.
To be honest, hopefully neither of them see the field this year…unless we’re way ahead of course

I don’t understand all of the John Parker Wilson haters out there. They must be Bulldogs fans. Get over it. This is the NFL.

In a couple of years people will be asking why the Falcons let him go. Redman couldn’t make it on any other roster in the league. The only reason the Falcons have him is because he played at Louisville for Bobby Petrino. So, after 3 years out of football when no team in the NFL wanted him, the Falcons signed him. Now, suddenly he’s the best backup in the league. NO ONE ELSE WANTED HIM!!! FOR THREE YEARS!!!

Kerry Mier must be dating Arthurs daughter or something. I just don’t know what in the heck they see in him. I know he is an ex quarteback and supposedly knows all of the receiver positions but if you are never on the field then let Kevin Cone or #19 have a shot at making the team The key to Green Bays success is they play their playmakers and get rid of those who don’t cut it. They ain’t scarred to cut a player or play someone who has talent rookie or not. Kerry MIer is a joke until he proves me wrong.

I don’t to play the race card but I have it in my hand if I need it.

RB Antonio Dixon(49ers) 6″1″ 233lbs. He can flat run the football with “Bad Intentions.” He may be cut by Sat. Falcons should offer late round pick for this guy, he’s the real deal! Better than “Fat Butt Turner.”
