Atlanta Falcons: Parker Wilson waived, Peters on injured list (updated)

Vivlamore reporting from Flowery Branch. Here is your Falcons report following Sunday’s practice.

FLOWERY BRANCH –The Falcons  placed defensive tackle Corey Peters on the reserve/non-football injury list and waived quarterback John Parker Wilson Sunday, trimming their roster to 75 players. Peters will not be eligible to return to the active roster until after Week 6 of the regular season.

Peters has not participated this preseason due to a foot injury suffered away from the team’s training facility prior to the start of training camp. Peters has started 30 of 31  games over the past two seasons and recorded 73 tackles (57 solo), four sacks, one interception, one fumble recovery and three passes defensed. The earliest Peters could return would be Oct. 28 against the Eagles, following the Falcons bye week.

Wilson was originally signed as a college free agent in 2009 out of Alabama. He has been on the team’s practice squad and was the No. 3 quarterback the past two seasons.

Unless the Falcons bring in another quarterback, Dominique Davis earned a spot on the roster behind Matt Ryan and Chris Redman. Davis, an undrafted rookie free agent, has impressed the coaching staff during training camp. He threw a 39-yard touchdown pass to Tim Toone in Friday’s exhibition win at the Dolphins.

The Falcons were required to cut down to 75 players by 4 p.m. Monday.

Playing time for Dent

Starting middle linebacker Akeem Dent saw his first extended action of the preseason in Friday’s exhibition game against the Dolphins, taking about 30 snaps with the base and sub packages.

Dent missed most of the first and all of the second exhibition game with a concussion. It was important to get Dent on the field in game situations, according to coach Mike Smith.

“We wanted to get him a little work, especially in our sub package,” Smith said following Sunday’s practice. “It was a good experience for him because he hasn’t done it in a game. … We needed to get that evaluation done and I think he did a nice job.”

Dent had three tackles against the Dolphins. He figures to be one starter to see some more time in Thursday’s exhibition finale at the Jaguars.

“Things went pretty good,” Dent said. “I still have some things to work on but overall things went well. [There is] technique stuff I need to shore up.”

Injury report

Wide receiver Kevin Cone (concussion) returned to full contact practice Sunday. Smith said he will play in the exhibition finale.

Cornerback Christopher Owens (hamstring), running back Jason Snelling (lower right leg) and defensive tackle Corey Peters (foot) continued to work with trainers. Safety Shann Schillinger (foot) and wide receiver Kerry Meier (leg) did not participate.

Cornerback Asante Samuel was excused from practice for a personal reason.

Starters or no starters?

Smith said he has not yet determined if starters will play against the Jaguars.

“I can speak historically, we’ve had games where we’ve seen them and we’ve had games where we have not seen them,” Smith said. “We’ll make that decision and finalize it in the next 48 hours. We still have some things that we need to get done. Hopefully we can get them done on the practice field but if not we’ll get them done in the game.”

Too many flags

Penalties are still plaguing the Falcons this preseason. They committed eight penalties for 40 yards in Friday’s exhibition victory over the Dolphins. In three exhibition games this preseason, the Falcons have 29 penalties for 282 yards. The number of infractions is tied for third in the NFL this preseason (going into Sunday’s game) and the total yardage leads all teams.

Last season, the Falcons were 23rd in the NFL with 93 penalties.

Etc.

* Thomas DeCoud had his second interception of the preseason with a pick against the Dolphins. DeCoud led the Falcons in interceptions last season with four, all of which came inside the Falcons’ 20-yard line.

* Matt Bryant kicked a 51-yard field goal with 1:46 remaining in the first half against the Dolphins. It was the longest road field goal Bryant has hit during his 11-year NFL career. It also tied his longest field goal as a Falcon.

John Parker Wilson – what in the world did the Falcons see in this guy?? Need a real backup. A veteran who can fill in or more. Redman use to seem half way good but not anymore. The Falcons are in a world of hurt if Ryan goes down.

“He also said while in New England, they came in Monday for practice after beating the Chargers by 32 points and Bellichck spent the first 20 minutes in the film room giving the team hell for all the mistakes.”

And that separates winners from excuse-making losers. I wish Georgia had a coach like that.

Why does anyone care who the third string QB is? If Wilson are Davis are in the game something has gone terribly wrong and the season is probably over.

If it was possible for a player to not move forward in their development, that was JPW. On the flip, Redman is a player who is clearly regressing. Davis should be the #2 behind Ryan and place Redman as the #3. Redman’s apparent “experience” hasn’t appeared so far in the preseason.

I think Matt Bryant has kicked a 62 yard field goal when he was with the Bucs. This 51 yard was not his longest kick!

You could cut Redman and his 2.6 million salary. I do not think any team would be knocking his door down for his services. Davis has out played both JPW and Redman. JPW has outplayed Redman.
You can cut Red and he will be back selling insurance. If Ryan goes down, play Davis and give Redman a call. He won’t be on anyones roster.

Cut Meir, what has he done? Keep Lamar Brown, he can play and not doing a MIA, as Meir.

Guys please dont play the “racial” cards here. From a guy thats multiracial, this is too funny to me.lol The best players should see the field. JPW was garbage. Davis has tremendous upside. Chris Redman is garbage. Davis has tremendous upside. Kerry Meier is on the team because he deserves to be. The “white guy” is actually very good and the brass knows it. He fought through major injury and has been solid. Lets keep the only colors we speak of red and black Birdland! :)

Fact is there is no more than 16 -18 good QB’s in the NFL and the rest are backups at best. If you watched the Jets attempt to play last night then you understand both Tim and Mark are backups starting. Not sure if you caught the last news out of New York after the game but stadium police arrested both Mark and Tim for impersonating NFL QB’s. http://www.JetsInAWorldofSheet.net

Maybe the Jets will sign JPW to compete for their starting QB job? You just never know with Ryan.

Hate to see these guys lose their jobs but DD has shown all of us something we’ve been waiting on for awhile. I think most of us agree we can’t tell what we have until DD plays with the big boys, but we still know that we have better than we’ve had in awhile. I do think with the situation at hand, DD should be given a chance in the Jaguars game to play a good bit with the starters and 2nd team to see if he’s a #2 or a kid that needs more time. Number 2 QB is too much of an important job to be wondering who should we send in if MR is hurt. Without DD given playing time next game, we won’t know. It’s not even necessary for Redman to play next game. We already know all his assets and liabilities and can learn more about the new guy.
DD = good arm, good athleticism. Congrats. I think he will be starting for an NFL team in the next 4 years. Maybe the Falcons.

I’m a life long fan of Falcons. From first day Smith’s purchased team . I have been, when good or bad. It has been more bad years than good.
The remarks I maded about RED REDMAN) has nothing too do with race. I am for best player on roster.Meir has been hurt each year. At least Norwood did play two years before he started MIa’s. TD cut him, why not Meir. Brown is same size and faster than Meir. Meir, in Combine ran a 4.6. I do not see, keeping or drafted injuried player. Falcons has done plenty of both , under Smiths and TD watch!
Yes I am white!!!! and not a racist!!!!

I do not see where race has anything too do with putting the best players on roster. I am white.

Plan B, I agree with you 100% on Redman. If he is so valuable, why don’t they hire as QB coach.

You hate to hear about stuff like this… but when the axe falls…. you pray it hits an area you can recover from. The falcons must have great confidence in the D line.

Please cut Ryan and Redmond. Keep John Wilson Parker and the othr quarterback. Ryan has not shown any improvment and Redmond has started to play just like him. They both stink. Falcons will go nowhere with those two. It is really depressing to see other quarterbacks on other teams, rookie quarterbacks, play circles around Ryan. When is Blank going to be tired of losing money and start putting money into this team? Stop playing with your heart and play with your pocket book, just like when you took on home depot!
