Vivlamore reporting from Flowery Branch. Here is your Falcons report following Sunday’s practice.
FLOWERY BRANCH –The Falcons placed defensive tackle Corey Peters on the reserve/non-football injury list and waived quarterback John Parker Wilson Sunday, trimming their roster to 75 players. Peters will not be eligible to return to the active roster until after Week 6 of the regular season.
Peters has not participated this preseason due to a foot injury suffered away from the team’s training facility prior to the start of training camp. Peters has started 30 of 31 games over the past two seasons and recorded 73 tackles (57 solo), four sacks, one interception, one fumble recovery and three passes defensed. The earliest Peters could return would be Oct. 28 against the Eagles, following the Falcons bye week.
Wilson was originally signed as a college free agent in 2009 out of Alabama. He has been on the team’s practice squad and was the No. 3 quarterback the past two seasons.
Unless the Falcons bring in another quarterback, Dominique Davis earned a spot on the roster behind Matt Ryan and Chris Redman. Davis, an undrafted rookie free agent, has impressed the coaching staff during training camp. He threw a 39-yard touchdown pass to Tim Toone in Friday’s exhibition win at the Dolphins.
The Falcons were required to cut down to 75 players by 4 p.m. Monday.
Playing time for Dent
Starting middle linebacker Akeem Dent saw his first extended action of the preseason in Friday’s exhibition game against the Dolphins, taking about 30 snaps with the base and sub packages.
Dent missed most of the first and all of the second exhibition game with a concussion. It was important to get Dent on the field in game situations, according to coach Mike Smith.
“We wanted to get him a little work, especially in our sub package,” Smith said following Sunday’s practice. “It was a good experience for him because he hasn’t done it in a game. … We needed to get that evaluation done and I think he did a nice job.”
Dent had three tackles against the Dolphins. He figures to be one starter to see some more time in Thursday’s exhibition finale at the Jaguars.
“Things went pretty good,” Dent said. “I still have some things to work on but overall things went well. [There is] technique stuff I need to shore up.”
Injury report
Wide receiver Kevin Cone (concussion) returned to full contact practice Sunday. Smith said he will play in the exhibition finale.
Cornerback Christopher Owens (hamstring), running back Jason Snelling (lower right leg) and defensive tackle Corey Peters (foot) continued to work with trainers. Safety Shann Schillinger (foot) and wide receiver Kerry Meier (leg) did not participate.
Cornerback Asante Samuel was excused from practice for a personal reason.
Starters or no starters?
Smith said he has not yet determined if starters will play against the Jaguars.
“I can speak historically, we’ve had games where we’ve seen them and we’ve had games where we have not seen them,” Smith said. “We’ll make that decision and finalize it in the next 48 hours. We still have some things that we need to get done. Hopefully we can get them done on the practice field but if not we’ll get them done in the game.”
Too many flags
Penalties are still plaguing the Falcons this preseason. They committed eight penalties for 40 yards in Friday’s exhibition victory over the Dolphins. In three exhibition games this preseason, the Falcons have 29 penalties for 282 yards. The number of infractions is tied for third in the NFL this preseason (going into Sunday’s game) and the total yardage leads all teams.
Last season, the Falcons were 23rd in the NFL with 93 penalties.
Etc.
* Thomas DeCoud had his second interception of the preseason with a pick against the Dolphins. DeCoud led the Falcons in interceptions last season with four, all of which came inside the Falcons’ 20-yard line.
* Matt Bryant kicked a 51-yard field goal with 1:46 remaining in the first half against the Dolphins. It was the longest road field goal Bryant has hit during his 11-year NFL career. It also tied his longest field goal as a Falcon.

why don’t the Falcons tell us what’s really wrong with Peters. I mean lets be real a broken foot doesn’t take this long to heal and I doubt that’s what it was and can’t figure out why their being so secretive.

Heard David Greene speak last Thursday at the Augusta Bulldog club honoring him. He said as much success as he had playing college ball, He knew right away that pro ball was a much different animal.
The pure speed of the players was hard to grasp, and I’m talking defensive tackles and LB’s, and the closing speed of every DB was like the best one you ever faced on college. He said when he was on the New England roster for one year, Brady wouldn’t even shake his hand. Told him you are here to try for my job. My job is to see you never see the field. Welcome to the NFL. Good luck John Parker. David Greene feels your pain

He also said while in New England, they came in Monday for practice after beating the Chargers by 32 points and Bellichck spent the first 20 minutes in the film room giving the team hell for all the mistakes.

Chris Redman offers noting but “Advice/wisdom” He can still hand the football off. “That’s it,”he is done. The GM and Head Coach should be scouring the wavier wire for the Best 26-30 year old Veteran QB out there. Derek Anderson may be available, or Colt McCoy. Chris Redman looked worse than John Parker to be perfectly honest!

Hate to say it, but I will. Smith of the Falcons a lot like Richt. Pretty decent coach, but not a great one. Pretty good teams but not great ones. Roll over and beat teams they should, and pretty much fold and cave against real good teams. Pretty close. Richt has no signature wins in 3 years. Name one if I missed it.

I could not agree more. I believe that both of these coaches are satisfied with mediocrity. They keep doing the “same things the same way and expect different results.” That’s Stupid! (See LSU and Alabama)

After watching the nfc south teams , I can say that the Falcons have a very good chance of coming in 2nd or 3rd in the division behind the Saints , Bucs or Panthers !

The only Atlanta Falcon I have on any of my Fantasy League Teams is Jaquizz Rodgers. I wanted Julio Jones, but he was usually gone by the 3rd round. Quizz was “Mr. Irrelevant” in my draft.

Not difficult to understand the Falcons releasing JPW but (as others have stated on this blog) JPW actually played better than Redman during the preseason.
Redman is only good for handing off the football to the RB’s because he has real problem throwing passes over the heads of the other team’s defensive line. Every time he is on the field at least 2 or 3 of his passes are batted down. Hopefully he will also be cut next week. The team can find a better use for Redman’s $875K+ one year salary.

I think redman has experience and thats y i think he will be with atlanta this last year and dd will tak num 2 next year i think they want an experienced vet to show him the ropes and build some confidence before just turning over the riens this is understandable davis will have his day in due time he just needs to keep working hard and keep his head up, oh and good riddens jpw wish well but not on this team

Hear that the 49ers are so loaded that they are going to have to let some quality players go on the waiver wire, so I hope the Falcon brass are watching, if they are really interested. Really glad to see
DD retained over JPW, now the next move is to move Redman. I agree with Sick that Redman’s play has not been up what we would expect after all these years. If Miami can do it, so can the Falcons.

MSU Bully, I had thought about that too. Dixon is a thumper with speed plus some moves and would be good for us. Unfortunately I think he might have made a late push with his effort this weekend. He will get more time next week against the Chargers, unless he is dinged and they sit him because they want to keep him.
It would not suprise me if someone picks up JPW. He has some good skills and he has some snippets of Koetter’s new playbook in his head. I hope it is not New Orleans, as they have done this before when they signed the freshly cut Blue Sky Harrington to a five day contract in 2008 for our playbook.

Kerry Mier must be dating Arthurs daughter or something. I just don’t know what in the heck they see in him. I know he is an ex quarteback and supposedly knows all of the receiver positions but if you are never on the field then let Kevin Cone or #19 have a shot at making the team The key to Green Bays success is they play their playmakers and get rid of those who don’t cut it. They ain’t scarred to cut a player or play someone who has talent rookie or not. Kerry MIer is a joke until he proves me wrong.
I don’t to play the race card but I have it in my hand if I need it.

AJ, it’s difficult to have your post taken seriously when your sentence structure is similar to a 3rd grader, your spelling a 2nd grader. Some of your ramblings are obviously just spouting off, akin to a person who can’t intelligently make a case. Can you tell us why Kevin Cone, Drew Davis, or even Tim Toone should make the team over Meier? And if you think Green Bay would play them then maybe they should go try out there. But what really gave you away as an impostor was that race card comment which you thought would make you legit. NOT
Meier has worked his butt off and has been stellar on special teams. It is difficult to get on the field with it being crowded at WR and Meier is no exception.

I don’t understand all of the John Parker Wilson haters out there. They must be Bulldogs fans. Get over it. This is the NFL.
In a couple of years people will be asking why the Falcons let him go. Redman couldn’t make it on any other roster in the league. The only reason the Falcons have him is because he played at Louisville for Bobby Petrino. So, after 3 years out of football when no team in the NFL wanted him, the Falcons signed him. Now, suddenly he’s the best backup in the league. NO ONE ELSE WANTED HIM!!! FOR THREE YEARS!!!

JPW was actually very good at what he did. No, he was never going to see the field in a meaningful game situation, but he did a great job of learning and replicating what the OTHER team was going to throw at the Falcons defense. You #3 QB has to be smart first and reasonably able to play second. Good luck to a good kid.

Wilson got let go, but still could stick around on the practice squad maybe, because he has been here awhile and an undrafted rookie just came in and played at least as good as he did.
How did Holmes look? Whats the EARLIEST possible return for Peters?
Are the Falcons going to have to the offense this year that they envisioned when they drafted Julio? They sure didnt have a clue last year and maybe thats not entirely fair due to the lockout and lack of camp time, etc, but man, that was nothing like ANY of us envisioned, much less the GM, owner and coaching staff. I would have had to fire Mularkey too. The NFL has went to a pass happy offense and the Falcons will follow suit this year. Its going to be interesting to see and how the new OC runs the offense….

Congratulations to D. Davis. I know it took a lot of hard work and dedication for an undrafted free agent to beat an incumbent on any NFL team, especially at the QB position. So far, he looks like a good addition to the team and with continued effort, he may be an exceptional contributor. With the good coaching the Falcons can provide, he might just become the steal of the 2012 draft.
It would be nice to see him advance enough to unseat Redman but I am happy to see that the defense can practice against an NFL caliber QB. I have always felt like they practiced against a grade school QB all week and then had to face some of the best QBs in NFL history on Sunday. That is tough for any defense. It gives them bad habits and errodes their confidence. D.D. will strengthen the whole team, even if he never sets foot on the game-time field this season. Great find TD and staff! Watch that waiver wire and let’s RISE UP! GO FALCONS!

Why all the negatives about JPW in back up role? What the heck has Redmond done any better than JPW and he is a much, much bigger hit against salary cap. I do think this sounds like a lot more of Bama haters (Bulldog fans?) than JPW haters. The comment about him replacing Shockley a few years back is a little dumb. You saw how fast he was picked up and succeeded in the NFL. Hoping Davis turns out to be something. Ryan is great, but if he goes down all we have is an old man and an undrafted rookie that looked great against 4th string free agents. Wish Falcons could pick up younger vet as back up and groom Davis. Best of luck to Wilson. A great young man.

Biermann needs to be on the field for more plays and not necessarily as a rotating DE. He is just too effective a player to so limit his reps. Biermann has the speed to play a blitzing LB, or MLB. I think he would be dominant at MLB.
