AJC ONE landed back the ATL after a less than 24-hour stay in the MIA.

We are on the Turk watch today.  There could be some major surprises when the Falcons cut their roster down from 89 players to 75.

The Falcons are expected to make their cuts today before the Monday 4 p.m. deadline.

The team does not practice today, but wants to have the roster trimmed down by Sunday’s practice so that they can start preparing for Thursday’s exhibition season finale against Jacksonville.

Falcons general manager Thomas Dimitroff and head coach Mike Smith meet with every player that is released. They treat the process much like a exit job interview.

“Anytime that you have to make decisions about young man’s future, they are not easy decisions,” said Smith late last night after the 23-6 win over the Dolphins. “These guys have worked extremely hard with us.”

The Falcons must cut down to their 53-man roster by Friday.

“The 75 [cut] is probably not as difficult as the 53, but it is still difficult,” Smith said. “The number of decisions that you have to make are not just going to be based on this week. They are going to have to be based on next week as well because you’ve got to have guys to make sure that you have depth at all of the positions to play in the game next week.”

The Falcons open the regular season on Sept.  9 at Kansas City.

Here are some twitter accounts to track as some of the players have likely been released already. The team is likely waiting to send out an encompassing official released.

From the looks of the offensive and defensive line we need Lamar Holmes and Peter Konz to star. Travian Robertson and Lawrence Sidbury need to start. Dominique Davis IS A KEEPER, sign him now. Lamar Holmes and Peter Konz are athletic and have good forward speed. Travian Robertson and Lawrence Sidbury are strong and fast on the defensive line. Put em in coach. I also believe if possible let Sam Baker go,bench him or put him on the practice squad.

I coached 18 seasons in the NFL – the absolute worst part of the job was cutting players – these kids have been great players since they started playing football, many had been dreaming about playing in the NFL since they first started playing. These are fine athletes with high character and a great work ethic and you have to tell this great kid his almost lifelong dream is over. Some will still make it on another team, but most head home finish their degree and life goes on.

Agree 100% on Dominique Davis. I would find a way to keep him around. I’d still keep Redman around as an experienced backup, but Davis has enough potential that I would make room to carry a 3rd QB on the roster rather than risk him getting away.

Sam Baker can’t be placed on the practice squad along with a couple of other players based on the below restrictions: The Falcons don’t have sufficient back-up to currently release Baker but I don’t expect him to be on the team next year (THANK GOODNESS!!!). He definitely got pushed around on the field last night by Miami’s pass rushers.

In order to be eligible for the practice squad, players must meet one of the following requirements:

•Have no prior Accrued Seasons in the NFL (An accrued season is six or more games on the active roster);

•Have one prior Accrued Season in which the player was on the 45-man active roster for no more than 8 games;

•If served two seasons on a practice squad, are eligible for a third season only if the team has at least 53 players on its active/inactive list for the duration of that player’s employment.

Why does Travian Robertson need to start? That’s silly talk. He is at best our #5 DT.

I was hoping Chase Coffman made the roster but i have yet to see him do anything significant yet, I hope they keep him through this round of cuts at least & sport him out there in game 4 & give him a chance to show what he’s got!!!

Ryan should play 2 drives at the most in game 4 & then Davis should be 1st of the bench!

Cut jpw and redman..make room for another position player that mite contribute..worse case both qbs go down (ryan and davis) in same gm. Is so we probably loose anyway but we could have kerry mier(sp?) or another forth or fifth string wr to fill in and finish..then bring qb off practice squad for next game..if necessary…idk sounds good though

August 25th, 2012
6:01 pm

They like to cross train players..have a receiver that can fill in at qb (3rd string). Be just as good as what we are working with now..

Hopefully John Parker WIlson (aka JPW) will be a part of the announcement that has to be made by 4:00 on Monday…..just say’n…..his time is up!!!!!

I don’t care that much for Redman either but if you have to keep one of them I’d say Redman only because of his touted experience. I haven’t seen any of his experience translate onto the field when he plays but every time his name is mentioned it is mentioned in relation to his being experienced.

August 25th, 2012
7:28 pm

I want to see davis throw to julio..he out runs matt’s throws

August 25th, 2012
7:44 pm

Matt Ryan had zero experience when he landed the starting job for theFalcons, so why does Redman experience out weighs Davis up side? What has Redman done since he has been here plus he still look lost when he is in the game. He has zero wins in games he has started and a weak arm. Look at the teams that are starting rookies QBs this year, Davis should be the back up. Ryan won’t get hurt!!!!

I have to say this much. Cut Redman and John Parker

Keep Dom Davis as the back up to Ryan and just go with it.

Then we can keep a extra man on defense thats needed.

Darn hungry now.

Did I mention they drug tested me yesterday and they came back with the results………….. Solid gravy

For dinner I had two hams and a whole chicken on toast. Washed it down with two gallons of sweeet tea like mama used to make.

I snuck out 12 biscuits to eat in bed tonight when I under the covers.

I have dreams about gravy and biscuits.

August 25th, 2012
10:16 pm

Ain’t nobody going to take a cap hit on Dunta Robinson… You folks are unrealistic, cut him and he’s goes to a team who actually has a clue on how to use him (and you still end up paying him like Anderson and Jenkins)… He’s neither great or bad… You overpaid, deal with it…

August 25th, 2012
10:45 pm

Redmond has experience but unfortunately it is for losing. He will complete two short passes and we will punt. He normaly is good for no more than 3 to 10 points per game. The 4th stringer Davis has the best arm in camp but he probably will never be given much of a chance to play.

I hope the Falcons will bring Aron White back for the practice squad, they will have to replace Gonzalas next year and keeping White on the practice squad may help with that situation.

You must keep Dominique Davis. He has thrown 2 TD passes this pre season. How many do JPW or Redman have? ZERO!! In Fact…Redman does not have a TD pass since pre season game #3 in 2010! It would be a terrible mistake to not add Davis to the 53 man roster.

I coached in the NFL 18 seasons – you would like to have a back up QB with playing experience as opposed to a rookie who has never played in a regular season game. When I was coaching we like to keep a Rookie as a three, where he can learn from QB meetings and QBing the scout team in Practise.

August 26th, 2012

steven a smith……..it was not a big gamble to release Coffman. He will not be signing w/ another team. If the Falcons need a replacement, they can always sign him during the season. Injury prone te’s are not in hugh demand. Seemed like a nice guy, wish it would have worked out for him and football.
