FLOWERY BRANCH — Falcons safety Shann Schillinger suffered a foot injury and will not play against the Miami Dolphins on Friday, according to coach Mike Smith.

Schillinger, a sixth-round draft pick from Montana in 2010, has been one of the teams core special teams players. He’s in a battle to retain his roster spot.

The Falcons have kept four safeties under Smith on their 53-man roster. Behind starters Thomas DeCoud and William Moore, they signed veteran Chris Hope and drafted Charles Mitchell in the sixth-round of the 2012 draft.

Schillinger, who has played in 31 games, finished third on the team with 11 special teams tackles last season.

This secondary needs all the help it can get. Samuel is still smokin from what A.J. did to him last week. This pass defense is still very suspect.

Falcons need to go ahead and just pull the plug on Schillinger. You can rummage through the practice squad of every team in the NFL and find guys like him since they are a dime a dozen. I’d rather see this team put their efforts into Mitchell who atleast could have some potential and possibly contribute to the defense one day and not end up a strictly special teams player like Schillinger is/will be.

Cut this guy. Charles Mitchell can take his place on special teams and we still have Chris Hope as a backup.

That’s probably it for the Shan Schillinger era in Atlanta. I see a reoccurring theme with guys getting hurt and losing their spot on the depth chart.

Schillinger has done well since making the special teams, cut the guy some slack. btw, I sat next to his aunt and wife at the last game and his wife is smoking hot.

Shann Shillinger = Kevin McCadam

So Shann should be given slack because you set next to his wife? LMAO!!! Mitchell is an upgrade over Schillinger. Schillinger will never be more than a OK ST guy. Mitchell has the potential to actually play the versatile FS/SS backup role in a year or 2. Chris Hope is just the bridge to get us there.

Charlie, I couldn’t agree with you more. I think Shann has topped out. When he gets in the game he takes bad angles and winds up making lame arm tackles instead of dropping the wood on them. Mitchell seems to have much more of an upside and think that he will make the roster and be here for years to come.
I think there is an injury settlement in the offing for Shann. Moving to Montana soon, gonna be a …

For all the draft moves Thomas Dimitroff gets criticized for such as the dafting of Sam Baker or Peria Jerry, this is a move that I don’t think gets criticized enough. IMO, Schillinger was almost guarenteed to still be there waiting when the draft was done and it came to the FA signing period. They could have just picked him up then instead of wasting the draft pick on him.

@chc4, I thought Kevin McCadam too. McCadam was a guy who had no business being anywhere near a 53 man roster but somehow managed to get on it year after year, much to the dismay of the majority of fans.

was that dental floss or mental floss?
btw, Schillinger is listed with a base salary of 490 thou/ cap hit of 521 thou. That still will buy a WHOLE lot of country in Montana if he’s got ranching in his future….

Schillinger is underappreciated. And what I see so far this preseason is a stronger bigger hitter. Late round picks usually take longer to develop and I think he was coming around. This injury might drop him from the roster but before throwing him under the bus I think he deserves some props for digging in and being a good special teams player while learning the system and beefing up. Our depth has been weak so far this preseason and I think he was one of the stronger back ups…the experience he has gained thus far is valuable. So if he stays we’re ok. If he doesn’t he was a good Falcon while he was here.

Waynester, may man, attaboy. You can also buy a few pigmy ponies and dental floss bushes for that kind of money.

This latest injury just might be the end of Schillinger as an Atlanta Falcon. From what I’ve seen from him since he’s been on the team, he will never be a 1st team starter…..just saying!!!!!

That doesn’t buy squat in Montana! You do know who the largest land in Montana is right? Turner didn’t pay pennies on the dollar when bought up 3/5 of the state…

A 53 man roster will not consist of 53 first string starters.
Your back ups deserve to be appreciated if they are capable back ups.

he gets hurt too much.

He needs to eat more and maybe he could make it more better.

Time to eat. I sneaked a pork butt out of the kitchen so I am making sandwhichs. Peria Jerry came in and ate 5 sandwhichs tho.

I hate when ppl share my food.
