FLOWERY BRANCH — Quarterbacks Chris Redman, John Parker Wilson and rookie Dominique Davis are in a heated battle to backup starter Matt Ryan.

Some coaches prefer to have an established veteran at that key position.

“Whoever the best backup guy is, whether if he’s a 10-year vet or a rookie, is going to be our backup quarterback,” Falcons coach Mike Smith said after practice on Saturday. “I think you have to go out there and let the play on the field [decide]. … It’s a matter of who plays the best.”

Redman and Wilson have not played well during the exhibition season, while Davis, an undrafted rookie from East Carolina, has put together two solid outings.

“I thought that Chris and JP played better than they did the first game and Dom has played pretty good in both games, coming in at the end,” offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter said. “Dom gave us a chance to come back from two scores. He definitely did a nice job in that fourth quarter.”

I’ll say again like an earlier blogger said “Coach Smith gives blank answers”….. his mind made up well if keep continues on this path he’ll find his behind outta here…..so DLED start hitting him and the rest of the Falcon staff with the tough quesitions…now don’t worry you’ll still get to eat lunch at Flowery Branch…..

DD has performed better than CR and JPW at backup QB. I like an experienced QB as # 2 but DD has clearly been the better QB with a much upside. Is better athlete, more accurate passer, has made good decisions when passing. Looks like he is constantly improving

If going by preseason he is definetly our #2. If were going by the 2 games only he looked like he has potential of actually being a starter in the NFL

@ fake steven a smith

I don’t know which “Panet” you yourself hail from, but I do know that you’re dead wrong. Yes Davis has looked very good against uh…fourth…stringers, and practice squad fodder. Perhaps, though, you should look at Ryan’s numbers through the first two preseason games. 27-34, 280 yds, 2 td, 1 int (which is really the only bad ball he’s thrown so far). These numbers, mind you, are against two very good defenses. So stop with the Davis as starter before you even try to get started. It’s nonsense and you know it.

I would like to see Dom with the first unit and the same play’s. And a defense of the other teams first unit, then we will have a better measuring stick. So D led its time to put smitty hand a little closer to the fire with some tuff questions. About our safety net going into the regular season. I sense a lot of people on here feel the same concerning giving this guy a chance. How copy!

From what I’ve seen in the first two pre-season games, Davis should be given every consideration to be our #2 QB. Also, he should get some playing time with our second-stringers, to see just what we might have with this young man. Personally, I like what I see.
Also, if Smitty is smart, he’ll give him some reps in practice, with the first team. We may have a diamond in the rough, and not even know it!!!

We going to have to start some serious noise if Davis doesn’t get a chance over wilson and redman our last two preason games!!! @DLED I agree with others you need toask some tough questions about the opportunity this young man has earned to prove himself.

Thank you for your kind words my fans. If we make a big enough noise, I’m sure Authur will see to it that I secure a roster spot. Then we can push for the starting job. You know that white boy can’t run like me. Plus, I can replace the hole in your heart #7 left you with. I’ll be your huckleberry… OOPS, I mean blackberry. Bye for now. Gotta go feed my dogs.

I would like to know why D.Davis the rookie QB is not playing in front of C.Redman and and JP Wilson???? Here Redman looks lost with 15 years experience..Wilson will NEVER be a QB!
Think of the players we could get on the money we are wasting on Redman and Wilson!!

The Atlanta Sports media **WILL NEVER ASKED** the tough questions of Mike Smith. It is as if they are all afraid that they will get banned from the locker room for interviews if they do anything but ask the fluff questions.

D Davis is a very athletic guy, he would make a great guy for the defense to practice for Cam. Plus he have had the best showing in the two games the Falcons have played this preseason. I wish him the best of luck in making the team.

Davis is looking promising! Esp over Redman and JPW, who both appear pretty much to suck. I really hope the CS is serious about giving him a good hard look, and not just placating the fans with a lot of bs they have no intention of backing up.
I see a lot of folks pointing out the fact that hes playing against scrubs, so he hasn’t proven himself to be talented; but hes also playing WITH scrubs, and still looks to have great awareness, and better still, a sense of determination.
Id absolutely love to see him get a few snaps with a better group of teammates and see how he looks. Its just preseason, and whats preseason for if not for evaluating talent and helping guys to polish technique? I saw at least 3 or 4 plays where he hit a teammate square in the hands or chest, and the receiver still dropped it. Id be really excited to see him with a group of guys who can actually catch. That doesn’t even include the drives he kept alive by moving around and staying composed under pressure.
I’m with many others who fear we will lose this guy quickly if we don’t secure a spot for him, and that would certainly provide some proof to the theory that we have a team loaded with talent but that is, to our detriment, poorly managed by the cs/fo.
