FLOWERY BRANCH — I caught up with first-year quarterbacks coach Glenn Thomas after Tuesday’s walk-through practice.

After the game last week, I asked head coach Mike Smith if the competition was between the No. 2 (Chris Redman) and No. 3 (John Parker Wilson) quarterbacks or if it was a battle between No. 3 (JPW) and No. 4 (Dominique Davis).

Rookie quarterback Dominique Davis, East Carolina, throws a pass during team practice. (Curtis Compton, ccompton@ajc.com)

Rookie quarterback Dominique Davis, East Carolina, throws a pass during team practice. (Curtis Compton, ccompton@ajc.com)

He said it was “wide open” competition between all of them.

Here’s what Thomas had to say about the quarterbacks:

Q: How did the quarterbacks perform in the exhibition season opener against the Ravens?

A: It was good to get them out there and get some live action with a live rush coming at them. Different scenarios popped up at them during the game and that’s always good. That’s how you improve. You see those different scenarios and we adjust to those.

Q: How is Chris Redman doing?

A: He just keeps improving every day. Red has been around a long time. He knows defenses and what looks he will see. He just has to continue to improve and get the ball to where it is supposed to be. Having some carryover with the offense has helped him with Dirk [Koetter] coming in.

Q: Is this a big year for John Parker Wilson because his practice squad eligibility is up?

A: Ultimately, it’s a big year for everybody. He needs to play well like all of those guys need to play well. That was a good look for him this week (against Baltimore).

Q: How is Dominique Davis performing?

A: Dom has done really, really well. He’s a soft-spoken guy. He doesn’t say a lot, he just kind of lays back and soaks in information. If you ask him a question, he’ll answer it. He’s seems to be on top of his stuff.

Q: What impressed you all about Davis and made you all rush out to sign him?

A: That’s all attributed to our scouting department. Dom kind of fell through the cracks and we were lucky enough to get him.

We are solid at QB! Let’s get Davis to toss some long balls.

I agree about Davis Esquire….but we’re NOT solid at QB beyond Ryan if we’re relying on Redman to help us win a game ot two. I know he’s not going anywhere b/c of what you eluded to the other day….price. But Davis should DEFINITELY beat out JPW. His time has come and gone. He hasnt show ANYthing. If you read between the lines here, looks like they really like Davis and are pretty much over JPW….its about time.LOL

JPW is a joke, Redman is almost as old as Method Man. I’m the backup for Matty Ice, just like in college.

Hoping Davis beat’s out JPW as well.

Hope I get to see Davis play this week, as the NFL network game replay cut out most of his plays ( 8 minutes of 4th quarter) to fit game in 3 hour slot.

Michael M. I hear ya. I think D Led just wanted us to hear from the new QB coach and his thoughts on the bunch. I think everyone agrees that JPW is out the door.lol They probably wont let Davis push Redman this year (thought they should) but his chances of supplanting Wilson look good. It’d be an instant upgrade at the position.lol

I am ready for the Thursday night event to see if we do have any depth in the other players on the team…who cares about winning the game……………best to get some good reads while the opportunity is there to see who will be keepers and who will be throwaways to make the team when the cuts get under way………………………………surely Smitty wont play the starters too long……………we can’t afford to have any more injured players in a preseason game.

Seen-Keep those gums flappin’. There are games still to be played and your play caller will be sitting in his Lazy boy this season…Anything can happen…just sayin’ :) I think Matty Ice is gonna take the next step this season. He looks really sharp. It also helps to have monster recievers like Roddy White, Julio Jones and Harry Douglas…all of which are going to exceed anything the Taint’s recievers are gonna do….Tell me, who from the Taints is gonna cover all of the Falcon’s weapons…don’t worry, i’ll wait :) ITS OUR TIME!!!

Hopefully Thomas’ comment about Chris Redman improving was a politically correct type of statement because Redman has not improved at all since he has been a Falcon QB.

It is the same old results year after year with him playing the QB position, e.g., can’t move in the pocket, holds on to the ball way too long, and can’t throw over the defensive line or find a lane to throw the football. The Falcons could definitely better utilize Redman’s $800K plus salary for the cap.

I agree with all of those who have commented that JPW needs to go. He’s had several years to pass Redman (aka “our senior citizen QB”) yet he hasn’t been able to move of the QB depth chart.

I dont see how the QB coach says last week was a “good look” for JPW. Wilson couldn’t thrown it in the Ocean that night. He missed guys almost every pass. He threw three passes into the turf! Dominique Davis overthrew a guy that was pretty open deep. Redman’s arm looked weak. We are a 3 win team if Ryan gets nicked. Luckily Ryan is tough as nails.

Wow, Davis played in one exhibition game in the fourth quarter against eleven of the opponents lowest guys on their depth chart and y’all wanna annoint this rookie undrafted free agent NFL Player of the Year.
Davis showed pretty good footwork and speed. Looks llike he has a strong arm–hope it has accuracy and touch also attached.
The coach says he picks up the playbook quickly–that’s a good thing for a rookie.
Overall, in that tiny, brief look at the intangibles it looks like this kid can be a keeper, but let’s let them all play the rest of the pre-season and see how it shakes up.

Since everybody is putting in there 2 cents, here is mine.We all agree that Redman and Parkers days are behind them. How about sign Mcnabb at the league minnimum. The challenge of losing 2 gentlemen familiar to the scheme. We gain one savy veteran with a chip on his shoulder and alitttle left in the tank.Definitely wouldnt lose a game if placed in his lap.Lastly a great voice to help Dom Davis make this transition.Who is very familiar where DD is in his carreer. Also with the improve play of the offensive. The tweaking of the offensive scheme.Which would greatly improve with an QB a more mobile tham Matt has been in the past.

Nobody is “anointing” Davis, all that most of the folks supporting him have said is that he’s the best they’ve seen in terms of the three people competing for backup… Don’t get it twisted, they believe the kid deserves an honest shot… I mean come on, compared to the fallacy of John Parker Wilson and D.J. Shockley’s they’ve passed off as roster worthy, why not?

Redman performs as if he has the position secured. I hope JPW and Davis can step up their respective games and show they are competing for a number two position and not just a chance at the third string. We should want the number two to always push the number one qb. Fortunately, Ryan has the demeanor to want to be one of the best. He is driven and Redman appears to be satisfied.

Reading between the lines, there was not a lot of praise for JPW.

Wilson got a “good look” which means he got a lot of playing time. He didn’t say he was thrilled with how he performed.

Then the first thing out of his mouth about Davis is how he’s doing “really, really well.”

Hmmmm…

Here’s the way I see the backup QB position shaping up…

Redman can be trusted to “manage” the offense, if Ryan goes down. He has chemistry with the receivers and the line, due to spot starts in the past. Anything more than 2 games though, and we’re in trouble.

JPW has been unable to win the #2 spot from a journey QB in his late 30s, in the past three years. Not a good sign.

Davis showed poise and a strong arm last week, even though it was against 3rd teamers. He offers upside. You keep the guys that have upside.

Bottomline, it seems fairly even based on performance, but right now, Redman has the most experience, and Davis has the most potential.

I think Davis should beat out both jpw and redman . I mean redman ain’t getting any younger and jpw should have over taken him already and I believe Davis is good enough to be our #2 QB .

Davis tossed the ball around pretty good in the first preseason game it’s not his fault the guys around him couldn’t catch catchable balls.

I Prefer Wilson over Redman, Face it Redman sux. He doesn’t play he chokes. i’m done watching mike smith & staff try to make this guy into something. He may have the experience but to me, He doesn’t utilize it. Anyone else besides Redman, I say let em compete 4 it. As 4 Mcnabb, I would love to give him a chance because I used to be a big fan of him but I say that I would assess him in the preseason to really measure his ability & see if he still has it. I wouldn’t trust him in a reg. season game. QB competitions in atlanta are great but I’d be more worried about improving the offensive line if I were Smitty, Falcons have shown that blocking aint shit until they get in the playoffs. I say @ best we go 12-4, or 11-5. @ worst 8-8, or 9-7

[...] This Q and A is the most we’ve heard from him lately. And that’s not abnormal. I recognize that. After all, he is the quarterbacks coach. If things are going well, he won’t get any attention. He knows how the Falcons roll, because he’s been with the team for five years now. [...]
