Atlanta Falcons: Akeem Dent, Louis Nzegwu out for Bengals game

FLOWERY BRANCH — Falcons middle linebacker Akeem Dent, who suffered a concussion in the exhibition opener against the Baltimore Ravens, will not play against the Cincinnati Bengals at 8 p.m. Thursday at the Georgia Dome.

“Akeem Dent is feeling better,” Falcons coach Mike Smith said. “He is still in the first phase of the concussion protocol. He definitely is not going to play, of course, this week. He is feeling a lot better. He was in meetings all day with us.

“He is ruled out for this week. We are not too concerned. We’ve got time for him [to return]. We want him feeling better.”

Also, reserve defensive end Louis Nzegwu, an undrafted free agent from Wisconsin, suffered a leg injury and will not play against the Bengals.

Smith plans to play some of the starters 25 to 30 snaps in the game. The first-team offense played 21 snaps against the Ravens and the defense played nine snaps.

“I was thinking our first group would go longer than they did in the first game,” Smith said. “There will be a couple of guys who will be out before that. We’d like to keep our offensive line in there for the most part for the first 25-30 snaps.”

I’m looking forward to this one! I hope CBS lets us watch the game this week instead of cutting to superfluous sideline interviews while the players we want to watch are duking it out somewhere outside the picture. I also hope CBS realizes that players look like ants from that crazy endzone camera when they are playing on the opposite end of the field. We can’t see anything from that angle and miss many of the plays not involving sideine interview interruptions. That camera might just as well focus on the hot dog salesman while that is happening. Of course I would rather see the play of individuals on the Falcons team; including those fighting for the few spots on the roster where they have a chance. It is also nice to observe differences in play selection on both sides of the ball. It appears that execution by key players is quite good. I jhope we could watch them in action this week.

For hiram…………………I don’t think the Falcons will be having to go for it on 4th down and short, 4th down and long or 4th down period this year because they look like they can get er done on 1st and 2nd and 3rd …………….I never saw no 4th downs last week going for it. Cept to punt on the one series……………..forget the 4th down and inches.

Coach Smith is one for drama cause no reason for him to play the starters longer than one series…….he knows and we have all seen what they can already do !

DOL, have not heard a peep about Nzegwu’s camp performance. Sorry to see he is now injured.

About the Cone vs. Davis battle for 5th WR. Since the Falcons this year are going to use 3 – 4 WR sets and last year they rarely used 3 WR sets, I submit that WR injury probability is going way up this year and it would be smart to carry 6 WR’s this year. Moreover, it is unlikely Cone or Davis would clear waivers for the Practice Squad and they would be permanately lost.

Riisssee up?—Its only a matter of time before Weatherspoon puts Drew Brees into the ground on that bum shoulder of his! Optimus Grimes will continue his dominance against Brees and Asante will take a couple to the house in the season series. so F off! I can’t wait to see how Drew handles the pressure of trying to be coach and quarterback at the same time because if you think the Saints are gonna get anything legitimate from those clowns you are now calling coach, you are delusional.I forsee a Katrina-like disaster of a season for the Taints! Hey JSS, I liked your comment: “Get well Dent, it ain’t the SEC, it is NFL and they don’t care if you can read in 20 years…” I’ll just add that I was at UGA, and I can confirm that they sure didn’t care if the football players could read when they were admitted.

Hiramsaint-You still haven’t answered my fair question…Who on that Saint defense is gonna be able to cover all of the Falcon’s weapons this year? Julio Jones, Roddy Whit and Harry douglas are gonna tear that a$$ up. Any response is welcomed, but I assure you that these three recievers are gonna beat the Saints like they stole something. I can’t wait to see Lofton in coverage against these guys underneath. It will be interesting to see if he is still below average in pass coverage. GO FALCONS! IT’S OUR TIME! 2012 CHAMPS!
