FLOWERY BRANCH — Falcons middle linebacker Akeem Dent, who suffered a concussion in the exhibition opener against the Baltimore Ravens, will not play against the Cincinnati Bengals at 8 p.m. Thursday at the Georgia Dome.
“Akeem Dent is feeling better,” Falcons coach Mike Smith said. “He is still in the first phase of the concussion protocol. He definitely is not going to play, of course, this week. He is feeling a lot better. He was in meetings all day with us.
“He is ruled out for this week. We are not too concerned. We’ve got time for him [to return]. We want him feeling better.”
Also, reserve defensive end Louis Nzegwu, an undrafted free agent from Wisconsin, suffered a leg injury and will not play against the Bengals.
Smith plans to play some of the starters 25 to 30 snaps in the game. The first-team offense played 21 snaps against the Ravens and the defense played nine snaps.
“I was thinking our first group would go longer than they did in the first game,” Smith said. “There will be a couple of guys who will be out before that. We’d like to keep our offensive line in there for the most part for the first 25-30 snaps.”
