There were two major injuries that detracted from a stellar early showing in the Falcons exhibtion opener against the Baltimore Ravens on Thursday at the Georgia Dome.

Second-year man Akeem Dent, slated to replace Curtis Lofton at middle linebacker, left the game with a concussion with 9:38 left in the second quarter. He was covering a punt when he was injured.

Also, rookie fullback Bradie Ewing, who was drafted in the fifth-round of the 2012 NFL draft out of Wisconsin left the game with a severe knee injury. He left the field on golf cart. He was competing with Mike Cox for the starting fullback position.

Neither Dent nor Ewing returned to the game. Dent will likely head into the league’s concussion protocol program and could miss valuable time, while Ewing, depending on the severity of the injury, could likely be lost for the season.

In addition to Dent and Ewing, the Falcons were also without wide receiver Harry Douglas, who suffered a rib injury in the controlled practice with the Tennessee Titans in Dalton on Monday. He was replaced in the Falcons’ three-wide receiver sets by Kerry Meier.

Why is Dent covering for punt returns in the first place if he is slated to start at ml ? Stupid move! And for Ewing, he is done for the season, I am sure of it ..

It just don’t make no sense to have him covering a punt when they have players trying to make the team that could do it but not complaining cause hopefully it look worse than it actually was… have to expect these kinds of things in the preseason and at one time there was talk of extending the preseason to 6 games…………………absolutely nuts !

Good point……why is your starting MLB covering punts? Hey….put Julio in there and see if he can cover….who needs him?

I wish somebody would tell Dimitroff that “History is the key to the future”. In football terms, an injury prone player no matter how great a talent or how nice a man he is will usually end up getting injured. Ewing is done for the season and will be slow a year from now because returning from an ACL is usually a 2-3 year recovery time. Just look at the history of Peria Jerry, another injury prone pick of Dimitroff.

Hopefully Dent will be OK but he will miss a couple of weeks and he really needed the reps.

The Ryan versus Flacco comparisons are off we should have been comparing Thomas Dimitroff to Ozzie Newsome. First team looked good. But 4 years in we still have no depth of talent at all.

I keep saying, Roddy White would excel in the slot. Bring in Plaxico Buress to pair opposite Julio Jones. Buress will cover Matt Ryans’ obvious short comings.(ONE pick 2-night in the Red Zone.)

Loved the offense early but outside of the starters they could cut about 40 guys tomorrow and start over.

Falcons were super lucky last year with injuries, except for Julio. Hope this is not a sign of what’s to come this year.

Dent will be ok.
It’s a repeat of last years exebition, the back ups are awful.

I agree that Dent shouldn’t be covering kicks, which is why I’m really glad Harry was out & Franks got the oppertunity to start as a returner & did well. Harry too is to valuable to the team to risk returning kicks, Returns should go to Franks who at this point is just a 4th cb option.

Great start by the fist team offense and defense….hate to see the injuries but it’s football…it’s gonna happen… matter the play or the situation. My fear is that wevarevway too thin at some key positions. The second string backield looked like a high school team…….

We better hope the injury bug is gone or it could be a long season

I agree. With soooo many guys trying to make the team and show that they can contribute; WTF was Dent doing in on special teams at all?!?!? The blame lies on the coaches. Tough break for Bradie Ewing… How much did Mr. Mughelli sign with St. Louis for? Are you telling me he wouldn’t restructure and re-sign with us to stay a Falcon/? Julio is the real deal!!! We have the cap room to add some quality veteran depth. I hope we do! I’d love to see another vet LB, OL and WR… Soon! Hope Dent gets back in the mix ASAP but I’m already hearing Ewing is done for the year. Sucks!

On the surface it looks like Julio is going to be a problem to cover in this offense- with screens/slants and go routes. Then you have Roddy running underneath and Tony did not catch a pass. Say what you want about preseason these are still the Ravens….and the 1st team looked good that 2nd scary….

August 10th, 2012

Dent’s concussion appeared to be severe. He will miss several games….not sure what our coaches were thinking, special teams are for headhunters (2nd teamers).

Crap. Just crap. Ovie with the Rams, questionable talent to start the season at FB. Maybe we’ll see more 2 back sets with Turner and Snelling, or Rodgers and Snelling. Then again, the O line needs bolstering from behind. Not a good day in Falconland.

August 10th, 2012
8:16 am

We’d be a better team if we played without a fullback anyway. We need to be running 3 WR, 1 TE, 1 RB sets to take advantage of our talent. You rarely see teams like the Pats or the Colts (in Peyton’s hayday) playing with a FB. Basically, you’re playing with 6 linemen when the FB is in the game.

August 10th, 2012

Akeem Dent looked like a Deer in Headlights. Just not ready to be a starter. Maybe a rushing specialist.

We need 6 linemen with the talent pool we feature.

Losing Dent would really hurt sinc e we are thin at linebacker. Ewing won’t hurt as bad since we have strong fullbacks already.

This is off topic a little bit, but when they were showing the offensive starters, I could have sworn that that was a picture of Ovie at fullback, also, I really thought that Kuntz did a good job at Center, however, it seemed like he was on this azz at the beginning or end of each play that he was in there… but hey it’s the first game of preseason, so there is time for improvements. Also, the Officials were horrible, we ARE NOT the Arizona Falcons!!!!

My overall draft grades, although they are very premature…

QB: B+ Matt Ryan and Dominique Davis looked great
WR: A- I really believe we have the best WR tandem in the whole NFL.
OL: C- Some were good, still didn’t always see that “Push” that I would had liked to seen, but it’s still very early.
DL: C+ Once again, it’s still early, didn’t see the pash rush that I would had liked, but they will come together as a whole soon.
LB: A Similar to the WR’s, I believe that we have one of the best LB tandems in the entire NFL. Pray that they stay healthy.
Special Teams: B- Receiving Unit- Franks looked good, blocking was okay. C- Kickoff Team- Practice staying in the lanes better, too many little yards achieved by Bal at times.

Some of the decisions being made by the Falcons staff recently is quite baffling. We should have never let our LEADING TACKLER, Curtis Lofton go… for an injury prone guy who sat out ALL OF LAST SEASON.

August 10th, 2012
10:14 am

PR what are you talking about Dent played all last season he led the team in special teams tackles. You guys are right there is no reason he should have been playing on ST especially in a preseason game. But I’m glad to see he has some potential and not to much drop off from Lofton. And people please get over Lofton already, I liked him the whole time he was a Falcon but he is gone, now its time to see the future.

PR, we didn’t actually “let” Lofton go. We offered him roughly the same amount of money that NOLA gave him. He thought he was worth more, Nolan thought he was a bit slow for the position, feelings were hurt and he signed with the enemy. Lofa was an insurance policy the entire way.

Plenty of starters around the league play ST. Particularly 2nd and 3rd level linebackers.

And to make matters worse for the Falcons………….Curtis Lofton looks like an absolute stud so far for the Saints. He lost 10 plus lbs and is running around the field like a heat seeking missile. He had a highlight reel hit and a fumble recovery in a couple of series, and will be a big upgrade over the off injured Vilma. Lofton looks like he’s headed for stardom with the Saints………..What in the world was Dimwit thinking?

DC Dirty Bird

August 10th, 2012

realitycheck….if losing 10 lbs enabled him to cover tight ends down the field, why weight until you’re a UFA to do it. Oh and BTW, he simply recoverd the fumble, he did not make the hit. PRESEASON….

August 10th, 2012

Curtis is a good player, granted that is why we drafted him! However he outpriced himself and had to settle for a lesser amount………..simple. He is with the Aints now. I wish him luck all season until he comes back to the Rise Up Factory! He will get what he always got in practice………a two piece thigh from Turner and a consistent drubbing from Tony in pass coverage. Simple.

tlaw – Good points. I will take them under advisement. We did ask Coach Smith if he had any regrets about sending out his starting MLB on punt coverage in an exhibition game. He said Dent’s going to have to play special teams and he’s only a 45% starter because he plays just in the base. They play nickel/other the 55 percent of the snaps.

I watched little of the game, but I did see the hit on Dent. As soon as I saw it, I thought “concussion”. He was completely KO’ed.

I hope he has no lingering problems.

DC Dirty Bird………..Lofton’s big hit was on a running play where he filled the hole for about a one yard gain. I know it hurts, but the guy looks great so far for the Saints. This will be a huge loss and Dimwit should have to be held accountable for it!
