Atlanta Falcons: Matt Ryan rested; Vance Walker injured

FLOWERY BRANCH — Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan was rested in practice on Thursday.

“Number of throws; pitch count through the first five or six days of practice,” said Falcons coach Mike Smith when asked about the decision to rest Ryan.

Backup quarterback Chris Redman ran the first-team offense.  While John Parker Wilson and Dominique Davis also received more repetitions.

In addition to Ryan, defensive end John Abraham and Todd McClure were rested in parts of practice.

“We had rest  for about three or four guys today,” Smith said. “We’ll try to work these guys tomorrow night and then we’ll try to ease up before we get to the first [exhibition] season game, which will be a great evaluation for the young guys.”

Also, defensive tackle Vance Walker suffered an undisclosed injury and did not participate in practice. He joins defensive tackle Corey Peters (foot) and running back Robbie Frey (foot) on the injured list.

Resting Ryan! That makes sense, especially since they were off yesterday. LOL! Maybe they are hoping that Redman can secure the #1 spot.

IResting Ryan 7 days before a Pre Season game that he will play maybe one drive in does not make since to me. He also had yesterday off,, not to mention he is been off everyday except during OTA’s which they didnt hit or suit up. Are you kidding me? I just have a hard time believing that resting him outweighs the need to work on his timing. Besides, if he is truly ready to go, I doubt all of the recievers are ready to go. Smith knows what is best for the team, but I just don’t get it personnally.

hiram, I am with you on this one. I would have been working him until his arm was ready to fall off. They are all there to get better. They can rest when the season is over.

Ryan has a dream job…………he probably was a little sore in that throwing arm and Smith gave em an extra day off as a precautionary measure. Redman needs the practice too anyway and besides its just an upcoming preseason game …………..its not like Ryan will be in there but maybe the first quarter anyway. They are some stinkers around here though that would love to see him get that arm hurt and be out 5 or 6 weeks so they can have sarcastic little jokes on here, I can assure you of that.

Well it wouldn’t surprise me either that Ryan gets an additional day off next week as well because he is the franchise Quarterback……………

Michael M, you make a good point about resting him. I said Smith knows whats best for the team. That being said, Smith and Ryan make more in a season, than I will my whole life. Thats why they are the field and I am in my recliner on Sunday’s. I am just saying I don’t agree with the decision.

My guess is Ryan has thrown a lot more deep balls in the last 6 days than he has thrown all of last year and he needs to give his arm so time to recover. The recover time will actually make his arm stronger.

I find it amusing that folks can bash Ryan for missing on deep balls, such as the several times he overthrew Harry Douglas, Roddy White, and Julio Jones.

The same clowns then say Ryan has a weak arm. Really? So overthrowing a 6′3″ guy who is running full blast ( a guy who can run a 4.3, no less) is an indicator of a weak arms? LOL

This from the fans who hail from a state where the television series “Swamp People” is aired….and that’s your claim to fame….

Some of you people clearly dont understand what is going on. he didnt NEED the rest, the coaches GAVE HIM a couple days off since it was following an off day. Same reason you only see pitchers throw limited bull pen sessions or batting practice sessions the first couple weeks of camp. And Mr Falcon James you are right out of your own mind if you think Ryan took time off between OTAs and now. You clearly have no idea how hard he works. I bet he threw at least 4 days out of the week from then to now.

@VilmaTheBountyHunter Right. With all the throwing and working out he was doing during the off season, they decide to give him less throws today. The backup QB needs to work with the first team as well. No time better than after a rest day because the next week belongs to Ryan.

Glad Ryan rested today. If he put on muscle in the off season , I dont see it. Looks like same skinny minny to me. Just give me the ball and let me get leg whipped for a loss behind the line of scrimmage on third downs. No one can take my place. I am thunder thighs. Not sure why little cornerbacks tackled me for loss last year. I need another cheeseburger. Get out of my way.

One comment this morning for all of us Falcon and Saints fans. i am a Falcons’ fan myself. MY comment is this: How many remember last year when resting all the players during the pre-season games especially the last one, that we started off terrible! i think if memory serves me right this morning that it was 1-3. i predict this will be Smith’s last year and no playoffs either. Koetter is not the answer to the offense woes in short yardage issues and same offensive line as last year except Konz who will be starting at right guard or center. Screen passes are a great deterrent to strong pass rushing teams, but just how many times can you fool the defense? Falcons can’t run ten or twelve screens a game and when they get behind in the score guess what? they have to have pass blocking to give Ryan that extra two seconds he always needs to throw. Slow delivery is his biggest problem on 15-20 yard passes. Oh Well, i will buy the hype of a new season and better results for now. Defense will be better without Van Gorder, plus a more aggressive style of Defense.

Dled, have you seen progression in JP Wilson? I think this may be his final opportunity to make the squad this year as a developmental prospect. He needs to have a good preseason.

NES, there’s no way they fire Smith for one bad year, so far he’s been the best coach in Falcons history. True, Dan Reeves was here for a minute and got them to the superbowl but he never had a run of success like Smith. TD is the same way. He’s had some strikes and some gutters, but you don’t throw the baby out with the bath water. They don’t need 10 or 12 screens a game they just need to have it in the playbook, they didn’t run 10 or 12 screens last YEAR.

This is a very good football team that is just not quite good enough everywhere yet to compete in the postseason. I don’t want major front office changes, I want them to get more out of the guys they brought in first. I am confident they can, but I’m not sure that they are completely where they need to be as far as the talent on the line of scrimmage to win a SB. They will have to prove that over the course of the year.

I heard TD do an interview where he noted that people crushed the OL when he got here, but they’ve played well enough to acomplish a lot.

I still feel like the Line of Scrimmage is what is holding them back as a franchise. I think it was telling the first 2 picks this year were OL, but I still don’t believe they’ve fixed the problems.

the falcons will go to the super bowl this year the saints will be worse this year, the falcons will win the division and everybody pray that matt ryan doesn”t get hurt which means the offensive line is the main concern besides the middle linebacker thats it so go falcons i have cancer now so please win the super bowl before i die .

SEEN and Hiram frequent these blogs so often because they live in the great city of Atlanta. They’ve had a taste and will never set foot back in the sewer of the United States ever again. Sad but true.

Anyways, every QB rests their arm throughout the summer and the season. Its not even an issue. Find something else to complain about.
