Video: Peter Konz shines in short yardage drill

Vivlamore reporting from Falcons training camp.

FLOWERY BRANCH — The first score from Falcons training camp is in.

Offense 2, Defense 1.

The Falcons ended Tuesday’s afternoon practice by running three goal-line plays, from the 3-, 2- and 1-yard lines. After the defense stopped the first attempt, the offense scored on the final two plays. Running back Dimitri Nance ran behind rookie draft pick Peter Konz for the two successful ventures into the end zone.

“We wanted to give them a real competitive finish to the day,” coach Mike Smith said. “… I think there was some good execution down there on the offensive side. There was good hard running. It wasn’t like they walked in. They went behind our young offensive lineman.”

The starters were not involved in the plays. The sides were made up of rookies and young second- and third-team players.

The Falcons had well-documented issues last season in short-yardage situations.

Just watched a video highlights of the “O-line” last year in the Bucs game in the rain letting the Tampa D push them backwards into Matt swatting the ball out of his hands and getting the turnover………..why is it we can’t get some bigger offensive linemen on the Team to control this push back towards the QB, I saw it in a lot of games last year.

Well, I found it interesting. I’d heard the O-line were working on fundamentals and this looks like a good example of it. Is that Pat Hill leading them through the drill? Almost looks like he has them doing the Mr Miyagi “wax on, wax off” move.

I was hoping the OL would be benching 400 lbs or working out to improve strength so not to get pushed backward this year and not standing around playing paper, rock, scissors…

man I wish coach Smith & nem quit trying to reinvent the wheel. Both Blalock & Mike Johnson were All-American guards & Konz an All-American center. let these guys play the positions they excelled in and put them in a position to win. it’s cool to cross-train & whatnot but we end up with guys that are good at 2 positions instead of being great in one. we got Reynolds who is probably better suited as a RT playing RG the aforementioned Johnson playing RT when he’s better as a guard and Konz who was the highest ranked center in the draft playing RG. and we wonder why these guys are getting their butts handed to them. maybe we should line up Peria Jerry & Corey Peters at DE and put Abe & Ray Edwards at DT. let’s cross-train everybody!

Where’s Konz in this video? The video is downright silly. It would have been better to just not include it.

What we have here is a bunch of behind the scenes coaches that only know how to crticize instead of taking the good and moving forward with it.

@RaynSnill…very good point. Actually it makes alot of sense. Why are we cross-traning the OL when we don’t for the DL. Let the players playtheir natural position. Being good at many things instead of being just great at one works great in the real world…but this is the NFL.

How about “Dimitri Nance Shines”. He was the one who scored the touchdowns. The story and the video made no sense.

I think you got the story and video mixed up but I still appreciate hearing the latest from training camp because I seem to be having a difficult time getting there myself. I know that a rush to get the latest on the forum means an occassional error but I don’t mind as long as you keep this stuff coming. Thanks! GO FALCONS!

@True ATL Fan

thanks but don’t get me wrong I love the idea of cross training just let the guys get reps in their natural positions first. I just read an article where Konz really doesn’t know what position he’s competing for and it seems like he might be on edge. it’s already hard enough getting acclimated to the NFL. I know the scouts have tons of video on the kid and by all accounts he’s very intelligent so it makes me uneasy when we’re making the young guy come in thinking too much. it kinda seems like unnecessary pressure. then if he craps out and gets cut, he’ll probably get picked up by another team and become an All-Pro center for years to come. of course that’s just a worst case scenario lol. I just gotta trust our coaches I guess.
