Atlanta Falcons: Koetter says Ryan a Top 10 quarterback

FLOWERY BRANCH—Falcons offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter doesn’t know what the players around the league were thinking when they left Atlanta quarterback Matt Ryan off the NFL Network’s top 100 list.

“How he’s won as a starter in the league, we think he’s a top 10 quarterback,” Koetter said. “His play backs that up.”

ESPN’s Ron Jaworski ranked Ryan as the 11th quarterback in the league.

Koetter, who has replaced the departed Mike Mularkey, clearly has been pleased with Ryan and the rest of the offensive unit.

“We have an excellent group of players on the offense,” Koetter said. “Players, offensive staff and coach [Mike] Smith are fun guys to work with. We have a lot of talent and a lot of guys that can make explosive plays. I like how these guys are working.”

Koetter spent the last five seasons as the offensive coordinator in Jacksonville.

Sigh, if they would only say anything, anything of substance. Ryan is a franchise QB that we hope can start playing like the best QB’s in the league. He hasn’t yet. He may start this year.

Dirk, just get them scoring TD’s OK!

The last 4 years has never been about the play of the players, more about the decisions of the coaches.

Ryan’s around # 14, and Koetter is bottom 10 OC.

WOW Here we go again. It’s his job to try to pump up his QB. Let’s just face it the guy is average.

It is Koetter’s job to give Ryan confidence. I only wonder why Ledbetter thinks that’s also his job.

Look at the pics at the top….it’s kinda worrisome, when your WRs arms (JJ) are bigger than your QBs’. Ryan makes JJ look like a TE.

Now don’t get me wrong, I really like Matt Ryan, and behind him and the Falcons all the way…..but IMO he needs to add a little weight, and hit the weight room more often. I’d like to see him looking a little more like Ben Rothlesburger.

I know what you’re gonna say….supposedly he’s already been doing that, but I don’t see it, myself.

GO, YOU DIRTY BIRDS!!!!!!!!!!

Too many ignorant people post on these blogs. Ryan IS top ten talent, easily. If watching him command the team isn’t enough for you, his win/loss record should sway you. But no, unless you win the Super Bowl, people find fault in your play. Winning playoff games takes much more than just a top ten QB. Everyone on the team including the coaches have to do their best during the game to bring home a win during playoffs. Yet, the QB is the one who gets all the blame in these blogs. I was watching the games too and I found the biggest fault to be with our pedestrian game plan during those playoff games. If I knew what the next play was going to be, you damn well better believe the defensive co-ordinator for the other team did as well. It had nothing to do with Ryans abilities as a QB. Ask other teams what they think about Matt Ryan. I can guarantee you that most other teams would LOVE to have him.

Matt Ryan is a top 10 QB for sure! He has the record and stats to prove it, I would rank him behind only: Brady, Brees, both Mannings, Rodgers, Rothlisberger, that puts him at 7. I would certainly allow for argument that he’s close w/ Rivers, Romo as well, at worst that’s still 9. Anyone else, I haven’t seen it, I know some will argue about Cam and/or Bradford or Stafford, but I haven’t seen enough more than 1 good year out of each of them, too soon to judge. I would take Matt over almost all of these QB’s even a couple that I listed ahead of him due to age.

Go Falcons, Go MR2!

George. You are 100% correct. Eli took heat last year before the begining of the season for saying he was an elite quarterback, and he certainly showed signs of weakness through parts of last season. However he was strong and somewhat lucky during the playoffs and now no one questions his ability. Matt does have to step it up in playoffs, but he is definately a top QB in this league. I am hoping he will enjoy the same fortune this season as Eli did last season

Didn’t say it wasn’t D, it just doesn’t matter where he ranks.

Ranks are things that happen after results. Ryan has been a really good QB for us, but other than getting an above average team to the post season it hasn’t amounted to anything.

What has bothered me about the team is that they haven’t shown a lot of progress in the process in quite a while. They don’t seem to be getting better. What I love about Coach Smith is that he’s been able to keep the team out of prolonged slumps, and they’ve been winning enough even with average seasons like last year to get into the playoffs.

I know the new coordinator magic wand is supposed to make us all happy, but all these comments are fluff. It’s great they make themselves available, but they are saying nothing. Since the press conference in January where they said never again, Dimitroff has signed only 2 guys that didn’t even make it through training camp. His great signing at CB is now a slot cover corner. His great DE signing is limping and hasn’t shown up yet. We still have problems at Left Tackle.

Unfortunately nothing they can say is going to matter until games start, but I want to see some progress.

I’d rather hear Kotter tell us how he’s going to raise the scoring average and make the team more productive than what he thinks about Matt Ryan. It’s just useless hype, we know what we have in Matt Ryan, and unfortunately he’s not in the Eli Manning ability camp right now. He could be this year, but he’s not yet. Top 10 QB’s with this OL, don’t win superbowls. Yeah he’s lots better than Mark Rypien, but this OL isn’t close to those old Redskins teams either. That’s all I’m saying.

I like Matt Ryan, but he’s got a ton to improve on results wise before rankings matter.

They can say whatever they want about what they rededicated themselves to this offseason. The fact is, they were all over the place last season and they didn’t even play to their own standards as a team. Then, they put up one of the worst postseason performances ever.

I’m not throwing bouquets at these Falcons until I see them do something worthy of them.

PMC – Above average team? I guess that’s why we had the third overall pick in the 2008 draft because of that 4-12 record that our “above average team” put up in 2007. That’s just stupid and it clearly ignores his win – loss record! Flacco was the one who got picked by the above average team, not Ryan. Ryan is a major reason that the current team is now “above average”. His career stats clearly show him to be one of the best QBs in the NFL. We would not have done as well if Vick as stayed. Vick’s winn – loss percentage was less than Ryan’s through four seasons, and Vick’s % has falled since. As for the playoff losses, Payton Manning lost his first three playoff games too. If Ryan’s only as good as Payton, I’ll take that and I’m sure Mike Smith will too.

Ryan is above average, I wouldn’t say top 10. But, I would say top 20. Last years team and a top 10 QB? The Falcons would’ve been in the final 2 on their way to play in the Super Bowl last year. 4th and 1 how many times? Out of 5 attempts Ryan might pull it off once. Might! Same team with an athletic QB and we’re in the Super Bowl. Ryan’s ability to read defenses has slowed down over the last 2 years. He was allot sharper when he was a Rookie.

Guy just had the greatest QB season in Falcons franchise history, more than Bart, more than George, more than Chandler. The question isn’t whether Matt Ryan will win superbowls…the question is will he do it with ATLANTA.

Mark my words….this is his contract year….it is NOT a lock that he is coming back….or even wants to. This guy is about winning championships, hes not going to wait on Smitty and Arthur to get their poop together forever.
