FLOWERY BRANCH — Falcons quarterback Dominique Davis, who was overwhelmed during rookie minicamp, was singled out for some praise by Smith.

“He’s done some nice things,” Smith said. “He’s got a strong arm. He’s very athletic. He’ll get an opportunity to play in the [exhibition] games. He’s been a very pleasant surprise.”

Davis, who was a redshirt freshman at Boston College when Matt Ryan was a senior, was signed as an undrafted free agent. He finished his college career at East Carolina.

While Smith didn’t single out any other  undrafted players, he said several are off to good starts.

“There’s been a number of guys,” Smith said. “You’ll see in the preseason games when the young guys get in there and have an opportunity to play; they know that they’re fighting for jobs. They absolutely understand there are roster spots available for undrafted players on this roster.”

I wonder will the Falcons give Davis a real opportunity to win the number three job. To be honest if he can learn the play book he would instantly be a better QB than JPW. Not to mention he want cost anything to keep around. They can let Redman school Davis since they’re paying him quite a bit to stay around another year. Also JPW (what’s the name of the last OC we had) can go play for his pops in Jacksonville; because that’s the only reason he made the team.
What are your thoughts DOL?

Truly looking forward to seeing Davis perform in the pre-season. I’m hearing some great things about him.

That would be a great story from overwhelmed to Falcon QB. I don’t really have any strong feelings about JPW.

DJ Shockley looked good some years back then got hurt.. If this guy can stay healthy, I would be more interested in him being a backup than JPW then taking over for Redman as the #2 next year. Drop JPW and tell him to stay in shape (If something crazy happens and we need him) because no one else is going to pick him up outside of Jacksonville!

Right now Atlanta need a backup OB. We do not have one and I believe Davis is the answer. We have nothing if Ryan goes down so face it people

Hope he can supplant JPW. He’s been getting paid too much to hold a clipboard the past few years. There’s only so much running the practice squad you can do….

Third string quarterbacks aren’t much to get excited about. The strategy for having one is that there’s a slim chance he may one day become a starter or at least, a reliable backup. Davis will have plenty of time to learn the playbook if he makes the team as he won’t be getting many snaps once the season starts.
I notice a lot of Falcons fans aren’t high on Redman. I think he’s one of the best and most reliable backup quarterbacks in the NFL. He’s a help to Ryan during the season in the film room and can run the offense if necessary without making stupid decisions.
Looking forward to the season. I still think Antone Smith is going to be a sleeper this year.

Lets say Red had a lot of ” in games played ” experience he possibly could be good enough to be a teams starting QB but as long as he is seldom needed or used he will never be as good as he can be. Its like this , the Falcons build a a good ” point spread ” over a team they played , it would pay the team to let Ryan sit and play the 2nd back-up so he can get that ” in game experience “.

Third string QB doesn’t matter until the other two get hurt. That only happened to about 6 teams last year. One of which, Houston went to the playoffs and won a playoff game with their third string QB. QB is the most important position on the team, backup QB is the second most important and third string…. Get the point!

No offense DOL, but this article must have been pulled out of the bin to take up space. I hope you don’t pull out the one about the guy who cuts the grass and stripes the field.

if he gets a fair chance he will beat out john parker wilson and chris redman who has me puzzle, why is he still listed as number 2 when he can”t lead the team past mid-field? redman is not even close to being better than davis nor wilson

Heard on sat radio today that the refs will be taking a much longer look at certain plays where the Aints are involved! I wondered if there was a problem with blindness with the refs in a lot of plays involving Aints’ players. I guess it is true when someone suggested that the Aints’ SB year have an asterisk * placed by it! Lol!
