UGA’s White making most of opportunity with Falcons

Vivlamore reporting from Falcons training camp.

Flowery Branch – It’s been a whirlwind few months for Aron White.

The tight end, out of the University of Georgia, was not invited to the NFL Scouting Combine and then went undrafted in April. He was, however, invited to the Falcons rookie minicamp in May on a tryout. White made enough of an impression to be signed and brought to training camp.

Now, just three months after the disappointment, he is sharing the practice field with the likes of Tony Gonzalez. White is one of six tight ends in camp fighting for likely three roster spots.

“Draft day came and any time you don’t get picked up you are going to have the momentary setback, that momentary disappointment,” White said after a recent practice. “When I got the call for the tryout I was overjoyed to get that opportunity. And the fact that of all the guys that were trying out during that rookie minicamp, they chose me and wanted to bring me on was very encouraging. I try to stay as positive as I can working forward from there. I know it’s a wide open opportunity here. We’ve got one guy who is a beast but beside that everybody is fighting as hard as they can to secure as many tight end spots as they are going to have on the roster.”

White said he is using every opportunity to benefit from being around Gonzalez, whom he called “the greatest to ever play.”

“Anything that he does mention, you try to take in as much as possible and be a sponge,” White said. “At the same time, you don’t want to crowd a guy. We all have to act professionally and take care of our own business. Any knowledge that he does share, I’m trying to soak it up.”

White finished his Georgia career with 34 catches for 512 yards and 10 touchdowns. He is well known for one particular touchdown catch – a reception that his Falcons teammates are slowly becoming aware.

In the closing seconds of the first half in a game against New Mexico State at Sanford Stadium last season, White caught a touchdown from Aaron Murray, ran out of the side of the end zone, had to leap over a piece of band equipment and disappeared into the famed hedges. It took several seconds for teammates to help White out of the shrubbery for the celebration to ensue.

“It’s funny because about once a week one of my Falcon teammates will say ‘I didn’t know that was you. I’ve watched you on YouTube. I saw you on SportNation 101 Celebration Fails,’” White said. “I say ‘I appreciate that. I play football, too.’ At the same time, it’s all good, it’s all fun. It’s a memory I’ll have forever and it doesn’t embarrass me or make me feel bad.”

White will make the active Falcons roster. His problem at Georgia was not his lack of talent. Rather, starting QB Murray and his favorite TE was a guy he plalyed with in high school and had a lot of talent. When White got a chance to play he responded. He can catch, block, has good character, and is smart. He’s a steal for the Falcons.

I think he’ll make the practice squad and give him a year to learn the system. Once Tony retires, it is wide open and he might be the best option we have. The difference is he is not a great blocking TE. Palmer is better and we need that during the season.

Aron was highly rated out of high sclool, and did get somewhat overlooked at UGA.

I agree with Old QB and hope he sticks with the Falcons.

Seen This B4…….you could say that about all non drated players. But as you know, players like this make a roster all the time on every team. Why not wish him well and see how it turns out.

I will make the roster. He is definitely a steal! If Gonzalez retires after this season, I think Aron White will get a chance to start next year.

seen this b4 can’t wish anyone well because he is a hate filled little nothing. His life has been filled with one huge disapointment after another. His one “victory” in life was when his beloved taint’s cheated there way into a superbowl and then rode a 6 year wave of pity to a giftwrapped pretend win. Now that the entire world minus the cesspool of new orleans knows the taint’s didn’t actually win, poor pathetic little seen is even angrier than usual.

If only he used all that pent up agression on finding a job instead of getting drunk and cracked out and posting on the ajc maybe………..we all know he is too lazy and worthless to do that so why even speculate.

Sadly for both former UGA players (Dent, White) the Falcons will find replacements for them in the early rounds of next years draft. Look up Manti Te’o and Tyler Eifert from Notre Dame. Our first and second round picks respectively

The Falcons had a chance to grab Orsen Charles and I was disapointed when they passed on him.But the drunk driving charge hurt him. I think he will bounce back and be ok .I was estatic when the Falcons signed Aron.I think he will make the team and hopefully become a starter in the future.Great pick up.

White is a smart and gifted player with tons of heart and determination. He has the potential to be a dangerous weapon for the Birds! Being “slightly overlooked” at UGA, I believe, kept him just humble enough (and healthy) for such a moment as this. I am bias but honest, I watched his UGA career closely and had the opportunity to observe his “true character”. I will not be surprised when he succeeds at this level of play. Don’t be surprised to see him around for a long time, God willing. Peace, WOOF…and RISE UP!
