open competition along the line when he was released between practices on Saturday.

“It was a football decision,” Falcons coach Mike Smith said. “Vincent was out last year, completely out and in terms of the competition at the offensive line positions, we wanted to not muddy the waters.”

He was signed by the Falcons as a free agent on March 9, 2012 and received a $65,000 signing bonus. He was scheduled to make a base salary of $890,000.

Basically, the coaches were impressed with what they’d seen from guards Garrett Reynolds, Peter Konz, Mike Johnson and tackle-guard Andrew Jackson and were also able to make a clear assessment of Manuwai, who played eight seasons in Jacksonville before sitting out last season.

“We’ve got a real competitive situation across the offensive line,” Smith said. “We are going to roll them in and out. We’ll come up with the best combination of seven offensive linemen.”

Manuwai, 6-2, 333 pounds,  started 105 of the 111 games with the Jaguars. He opened training camp as the No. 3 right guard behind Reynolds and Konz.

The Falcons had just two free-agent signings last offseason in Manuwai and linebacker Lofa Tatupu. Both has been released. The team’s roster now stands at 89, one below the league-limit of 90.

Here’s a Q&A we did with Manuwai after he signed with the Falcons.

Sweeet, but down to business. So hopefully this means that one or more of the younger guys are impressing at camp. DOL, what do you make of this?

Junkyard Dawg2011 — He probably didn’t like running behind Konz at No. 3 LG.

billbigsb56 — We’ll see what Coach Smith says after practice. Also, we’ll see if Vince picks up his cell phone.

So our plan for the offseason was to sign two playrs out of football last year. Both gone now. Great job TD. OG left with a player who lost his job and a rookie. MLB with a player who has never started in the NFL!

What’s the problem?

Doesn’t everyone know that we’ve had such a dominant offensive line stacked three deep at every position that we have zero need for former starters.

Unreal…a bottom five OL featuring the indisputably worst LT in the NFL better be picking right, for once. When will we again see an elite OL for the Falcons? It has been decades, it seems?

I’m not even going ot start taking about the 3rd agent we got, We don’t need that one jinxed. I was really hoping for Lofa to turn out good, But looks like were going looking at the waiver wire for a backup middle linebacker. I know we could throw Mike Pedersen in a pinch there, But I bet its pretty slim pickings. :( Hope Akheem Dent is good, looking like it was not such a got idea to let Curtis lofton go. :(

So both of the “big” free agent pickups that Dimitroff went on and on about will not be in a Falcon’s jersey this year. And this team is better because why? I have been questioning Dimitroff’s evaluation for talent since he got here and this is just another example.

Agree with G and Rick………..Just don’t see any improvement at all, and I too see regression. The Falcons last two losses were by a combined 51 points, and they have lost nearly every big game against quality opponents. Smitty and / or Dimitroff may be looking for work in about five months if this season becomes more of the same or worse and those possibilities are very real.

Definitely disappointing. I really hope this means someone else has stepped up. If we wind up starting Garrett Reynolds we might as well expect a ceiling of 9-7.

does this mean Mike Johnson becomes the 3rd player in this race? I really hope they’re not content with him backing up Blaylock, you don’t spend a 3rd rounder on a backup guard! I know Hawley’s in the race too, but I’d love to see Konz start at Center & Johnson & Blaylock at the Guards!

I think the consensus was that the primary problem last year was coaching. If that is true, that’s a mistake. We are in big trouble at MLB and on the offensive line.

Nique – Konz is not going to start at center as a rookie just based on the trust factor needed. The competition is just heating up so it’s heard to figure out where Mike Johnson will land. He was beaten out by Garrett last year under the old OL coach. Maybe Hill will see things differently.

Stick a fork in the Birds, they are done. Weak O-Line=Matty ice ice Ryan throwing more picks and winding up on his gluetus maximus. The ineptitude of the offense in the Giant playoff loss will be more the rule than the exception. Last place finish LADIES!!!

Cutting Manuwai only cost the Falcons $65,000 (signing bonus). He was set to make $890,000 in base salary.

I am thinking in the mold of Calvin Johnson, Vincent Jackson, Malcom Floyd, Marquis Colston
and so on. These guys are 6′5″ and taller. Most DBs are 5″10″ or shorter.
Does this make sense?

The Panties will be at the bottom of the NFC South this year – Where they belong. Pretty boy Cam Newton will experience the sophomore curse and you will see how pathetic a head coach Ron Rivera really is…have fun at the bottom. Of course anyone who wears those abysmal colors has to be a bottom.
