FLOWERY BRANCH – The Falcons finished their first walk-through of the season as training camp opened this morning.

Both of the local sports radio stations – 680TheFan and 70The Zone – are broadcasting live.

Also, ESPN’s Lisa Salters was on hand for the session.

Coach Mike Smith and running backs coach Gerald Brown stated this offseason that they would monitor running back Michael Turner’s carries and that Jacquizz Rodgers would likely pick up some of the workload.

On 790TheZone Smith said Rodgers and Jason Snelling should pick up some additional work and that he didn’t want Turner to be over 300 carries this season.

The afternoon session is open to the public and starts at 3:30 p.m.

With the release of Lofa Tatupu, Akeem Dent moves up the No. 1 at middle linebacker. We also have Peter Konz at No. 2 at right guard.

Here’s a story on Dent from the offseason.

Here’s my training camp depth chart:

Being a pollyanna is not “insightful” or “encouraging.” It’s a “process” when you get it right… You do realize that Green Bay, the Giants, the Saints, and even the Eagles have stripped, restarted, and won playoffs games in the time the Falcons process has made 3 playoff appearances and no post-season progress… If anything they regressed… When they retooled in terms of players, front office personnel, and coaches it was generally because other teams hired them away… With the exception of front office underlings, that hasn’t been case in Atlanta…

You can call it all kinds of cute names; but the process stage 1 did not get it done! Many people are counting on weakened division foe to obtain success… Others are depending on a new set of smoke and mirrors… That is sad and disappointing… Beat the best at their best with your best!

D-LED: Is there any chance the team will sign Keith Brooking to play MLB this season?

@seenthisb4(even though I’m blind) – please be consistent this year and don’t strategically time your posts after a Saints win or Falcons loss. Remember that saying, “What goes around, comes around”? Well this season is your it comes around, and I’m sure I speak for many of these bloggers in saying we have some font lashing for you after you beloved Saints fall flat on their faces ;-)

….also, I would like to recognize DLed for all his efforts and great work in covering the Falcons. Not all of the AJC sportswriters are worthy of recognition but DLed is consistent and spares us from a lot of the useless jibber-jabber like writers for the other sports. Keep up the great work DLed!!

@GT Grad – the Falcons are in progression mode, not regression mode. Keith was respectable in his early years but he has nothing left to help the Falcons get over the hump.

I just completed a little research……Brooking is almost 37 years old (probably not an option any longer, but he was a stellar LB for several seasons!!).

Just got back from training camp day 1. Hard to say after only a day but the defense was buzzing around the ball….deuce deuce was fun to watch and dominque Dixon looked ready to over take as 3rd string QB….offense seemed flat but roddy and Gonzales made some nice catches……no deep balls today

Did I miss something? Reynolds totally sucked last year. I agree that LT is a concern, but RG got blown-up and I wouldn’t have expected Garrett to be listed as #1.

JSS- your comments are not surprising. After all, you live on this blog just to bash the Falcons. Again, this team was the joke of the league with their coach walking off, QB in prison. It is a process and we are doing just fine. Each year I see improvement and all the negative rebuttals in the world can not change my mind. Vision, keep your vision Falcons.

I’m concerned that at least from cursory observation it does not appear that the roster is improving from year-to-year. Am I right?

Rick-thanks for update on camp. Good to hear about Dixon. We need a solid back-up.

D-Led-I truly admire you. I can tell you are passionate about the Falcons and try your best to bring fans the lastest developments. My admiration comes from writing these nice articles only to have them butchered by a bunch of immature, and/or negative bloggers. You certainly have a larger tolerance rate than me.

Firsttimer, correct you are Sir. However, It remains to be seen if Mr. Samuel has much left in the tank. I don’t even know who Mr. Hope is, and I’m not certain if these additions are enough to overcome what I believe are glaring deficiencies “in the trenches” on both sides of the ball. Let’s be hopeful, and prayerful.

GT in GoldTown — 5 or 6 WRs on roster; 1 or 2 on practice squad. Likely 1 FB and Snelling, who can play FB and RB.

Ed — Aron White probably has a shot to make the practice squad.

“Yeah, what he said!” You go firsttimer, I agree. The birds are not perfect, but they have as good of a chance to have a great season as anybody. JSS, are u a falcons fan or a poor soul whose mom lets him live in the “Guest Room” ? U are one of those people who point out everyone elses flaws, just so you don’t have to focus on yours. Dude the government is not your daddy, man up and be an adult who comes up with solutions, not more problems. RISE D@#N UP FALCONS

[...] TE Tommy Gallarda – Atlanta Falcons – ESPN blogger Pat Yasinskas saw Gallarda “make one very nice catch in traffic over the middle,” which is good for Gallarda since he is only expected to be a blocker and is fighting for the third TE spot on the team. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution predicts he will get it. [...]
