Falcons training camp began today in Flowery Branch with players, coaches hoping to make it to the regular season unscathed. Most training camps are uneventful (aside from the occasional injury) but there have been some truly bad moments in the training camp history of the Falcons. Curtis Compton/ccompton@ajc.com
FLOWERY BRANCH – The Falcons finished their first walk-through of the season as training camp opened this morning.
Both of the local sports radio stations – 680TheFan and 70The Zone – are broadcasting live.
Also, ESPN’s Lisa Salters was on hand for the session.
Coach Mike Smith and running backs coach Gerald Brown stated this offseason that they would monitor running back Michael Turner’s carries and that Jacquizz Rodgers would likely pick up some of the workload.
On 790TheZone Smith said Rodgers and Jason Snelling should pick up some additional work and that he didn’t want Turner to be over 300 carries this season.
The afternoon session is open to the public and starts at 3:30 p.m.
With the release of Lofa Tatupu, Akeem Dent moves up the No. 1 at middle linebacker. We also have Peter Konz at No. 2 at right guard.

I think the guys at Fox Sports were right when they said that the loss of Tatupu was more than offset by the Saints pay-to-hurt scandal and the loss of personnel and coaching. Of course, they also mentioned that the Falcs have 14 other games and those won’t be as easy.

MLB is only a 1st and 2nd down player these days with all the passing going on. Nicholas and Spoon will be the LBs in nickel coverage. I like this team a lot. I think we go 11-5 and win the division.

Interesting that Mike Cox is still losted as our first choice FB, but hey, tht’s what training camp is for, for these unproven rookies to fight for their starting jobs.
I think Ewing and Konz will finish this camp as first choice in their respective positions barring any injury. I also think that 2nd WR spot behind Julio will be an interesting battle, and I think it will be interesting to see who ends up winning our PR and KR duties

Mike Cox is not a rookie. He started a lot of games at FB last year I believe with the #1 FB (now gone) was injured. The Falcons has enough confidence in Cox not to resign the starting FB off of that injury…and I am sure money played into that as well.

Unless you meant that Ewing…the rookie….would have to fight Cox for the postion….which I think you might have intended to say….not clearly.

Nice to see Massaquoi in line behind Edwards and Biermann. He could actually get some playing time sooner than later, with the inconsistency of Ray and Kroy on passing downs.
I am very interested to see what Vince Manuwai brings to the RG rotation. I think he will show the young ‘uns how some real beef moves around.

Not really sure why Shann Schillinger is still even on the team. Falcons are in deep DEEP trouble if they have to rely on him to give them any type of contribution at FS should DeCoud go down with an injury. I’d rather take my chances and gamble on Chris Hope before I gave Schillinger any snaps that weren’t on special teams.

Biggest sleeper on the Falcons Squad — Jerrell Harris!!!
Jerrell was very much under-rated the last 2 yrs on a squad featuring Dont’A Hightower & Courtney Upshaw. Harris was as solid as those players taht were taken high in the draft.

We’ve been hearing for YEARS that they are going to monitor/cut down Turner’s carries. They say the same thing every off season, and yet once the games start, Smith will run Turner ragged. I am expecting the same thing this year…history repeats itself.

This has got to be the best Falcons roster ever. GM TD, Coach Smith just make the right decisions. We are going to have to cut some seriously great football players. Other teams will be lined up to snatch players from our cuts. Let’s get after that Super Bowl title. Cut our coordinators loose and let’s have fun. GM TD keep making better drafts please. Next years to come ought to be for superstars. Best Players Available. Need next great QB soon.

I hope Jerrell Harris can make the team but with that said he’s missing the mental part of football that keeps him from being a star. You will see few players that dress out like Harris for the dude looks like he was created for the game. Best of luck to the Atlanta Falcons this year.

Things we’ve been hearing for years…
“It’s the scheme.”
“It’s a process.”
“We’ll be more explosive!”
“We’ll attack.”
“We’re going to have more sacks”
“We’re going to get off the field more.”
We’re GATA!”
We’re dictate to the defense.”
“Losing is unacceptable.”

I need to change my diet. At least start drinking more Kool-Aid. The Falcons have a brutal schedule. A 9-7 season is realistic.
The linebackers are paper-thin. Nicholas and the words all-pro have never been mentioned in the same conversation. He’s adequate and not an impact player. Dent has never started a game in the NFL. If Weatherspoon goes down we have Robert James backing him up–Robert James is smaller than Jaquizz Rogers which is very scary.
Piera Jerry hasn’t done a thing for the Falcons other than take their money. If he gets cut he’ll qualify for lifetime disability. Vance Walker is the only DT on the team that can anchor the line of scrimmage.
Ray Edwards was a bust, but as Smitty will tell you, “He was good against the run”. If that’s what we wanted why didn’t we just keep Jamaal Anderson? By the third or fourth game Nolan is going to scrap the4-3 and have to go to the 3-4 just to get pass rushers like Biermann and Sidbury in the game to help Abraham.
Tampa Bay and Carolina will be improved this year. And the Saints own the Falcons and will until we get a pass rush. I stand by 9-7 whhich might squeak into the playoffs.

Watch out Atlanta Falcons. The challenge has gone down. Ryan Kalil, Carolina Panthers center, took out a full page ad in the Charlotte Observer yesterday predicting that Carolina will win the Super Bowl. The Carolina coach, Ron Rivera, says he feels the same way.

This is a great team… lots of talent. Never underestimate the value of good coaching which I expect to see. If these guys are well directed, they will give any NFL team a run for their money. Lots of offensive talent and an emerging hot defense/special teams. I’m still anxious to see LaMark Brown in action. GO FALCONS!

Guess what? It is a “process.” You do not build from the scrap junk of a football team that this regime inherited in 08 to SB contenders overnight. Be patient, it really does take time. It is not like MS came in here and inherited a team on the brink of greatness. I am excited about the season and really do not care to listen to all the whinning. Can some positive fans please start posting and make this blog interesting. We are about to have football back and the Falcons are going to give you championship football performances.

I like what i see of the starters. If Peria is health all season, he could have some impact. Same thing with Baker. I think both these guys know that a poor performace from either of them will likely end thier career as a Falcon and will hurt them in FA. Everything elso looks good in my opinion. Can’t way to see what they look like in preseason. We definetly have some talent!
