Atlanta Falcons: Linebacker Matt Hansen waived

Linebacker Matt Hansen was released by the Falcons on Friday.

The release was termed by the team as a non-football injury. Hansen announced on twitter.com after minicamp in June that he suffered a ruptured patellar tendon and would miss at least the next four months after undergoing surgery.

Hansen, 6-1, 230 pounds, was originally signed by the Falcons as a college free agent on July 26, 2011 as a safety. He was later signed to the Falcons practice squad on September 28, 2011 as a linebacker.

Hansen’s departure leaves the team with 89 players, one below the training camp roster limit of 90. The Falcons will likely fill that spot before the players are to report on Wednesday.

The Falcons recently worked out veteran tight end Daniel Graham. Graham, 33, played with the Titans last season. He has also played with the Patriots (2002-06) and Broncos (2007-10).

Augfalcon — He looks good in shorts and he has a nice highlight tape. Need to see him in pads first and take his first NFL hit.

Why don’t we try picking up a left tackle for the offensive line, that’s a position that we need.

Robert – Sam Baker is your left tackle. Enjoy that!

I know but, I’m hoping he rebounds this year

Robert — They appear to be banking on a rebound, too. Teams are just not getting rid of good left tackles. When you get one you have to develop him and show him some love.

Dled,

Sam Baker is not a good LT. Injury or not, he’s been awful since his sophomore year.

Sam Baker is gonna be shown some door knob. I think Todd runs a construction company, he played high school ball and got cut though.

We could add another linebacker or unless they sign someone from the practice squad

What the heck is this, ‘Ground Hog’s Day: The Blog?’ Y’all keep crying about Baker! Should have done that way back in Spring of 2008! Move on, he’s your Marvin Williams!!!

@ Ledbetter…
Because it was a non-football injury, is he up the creek without aq paddle, or does he get worker’s comp? It’s a cruel business!

Sam Baker is beyond development. It’s all about health at this point.

Healthy Sam Baker = adequate at the position. Not good, certainly not great…just adequate.

Unhealthy Sam Baker = terrible.

End of story. Make sure Svitek stays warmed up, get another guy to man the spot while we’re at it.

Sam Baker was a reach @ #1 and should have been released long ago. Don’r forget about non-blocking McClure @ center. I will always see him not block the Giants defensive tackle as he layed on the ground as Matt was body slam to the turf. This guy hasn’t been the center for three years now. Get rid of the waste on this OL.

Sam Baker is on his last chance, yeah they’re hoping for a rebound but they are at the same time gambling this season. My bet is that if he doesn’t show that he can be THE LT (which he probably won’t), they’ll offer a backup contract and use the 1st round pick on a LT, even move up if they must.

JSS — Since they are saying it was non-football related, I’m not sure if he received an injury settlement. Looks like he’s up the proverbial creek.

never heard of him…must be really slow news

For those who never heard of him… he’s a versatile prospect (plays outside LB, inside LB and safety) who is faster and stronger than Robert James. He was one of the defensive stars of minicamp and was looking like he was about to take someone’s spot on the LB corps.

The team lacks depth at LB, so this one is actually a noteworthy loss for the Falcons.
