Atlanta Falcons: What Brees’ deal means to Matt Ryan?

BIRDLAND – The cost of playing quarterback in the NFL just went up for league owners.

With the New Orleans Saints signing Drew Brees to a five-year, $100 million contract on Friday, the ancillary beneficiaries include Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan and Dallas’ Tony Romo. Their contracts expire in 2013. Down the road a bit, Detroit’s Matthew Stafford and Carolina’s Cam Newton should also benefit.

Ryan, who’s set to make a base salary of $11.5 million this season and $10 million next season, is nearing the end of a six-year, $72 million deal.

Ryan still has time to set his value. He wasn’t selected by the players as one of the top 100 players in the league. However, ESPN analyst Ron Jaworski selected him as the 11th rated quarterback in the league.

Under general manager Thomas Dimitroff, the Falcons have made it a practice to re-sign players to contract extensions in the last year of their deals if they plan to retain them.

Last season, tight end Tony Gonzalez received an extension. In 2010, with the labor strife, the Falcons did not offer any extensions. In 2008, they extended defensive tackle Jonathan Babineaux and wide receiver Michael Jenkins.

Ryan has posted a 43-19 record in four seasons with the Falcons. He was drafted in the first round (third overall) of the 2008 NFL draft. He has guided them to the playoffs in three of his four seasons, but is 0-3.

He’s set to play under a new offensive coordinator — Dirk Koetter — this season for the first time.

The bulk of guaranteed money in Ryan’s contract was paid out in 2011, when he earned a $22 million roster bonus on top of his $10.25 million salary.

“Of course, Drew Brees’ $60 [million] guarantee is half of [former Atlanta Hawk] Joe Johnson’s $120M and one quarter of [baseball player] Albert Pujols’ $240M; some perspective,” wrote former NFL executive Andrew Brandt in a tweet. He used to negotiate the contracts for the Green Bay Packers.

Brandt added that the key to Brees’ contact was that Peyton Manning signed with the Denver Broncos for $18 million in 2012 and noted that if he passes his 2013 physical a $40 million guarantee would be activated, giving him a $58 million guarantee.

Other top quarterbacks like Green Bay’s Aaron Rodgers and New England’s Tom Brady, also stand to benefit from Brees’ deal. Rogers, who is under contract for the next three seasons, has a contract that averages $8 million.

Brees is a proven commodity so… while $100 million sounds disgusting to many (including me), and especially as ticket prices go up and the Saints franchise is in hot water, it really don’t mean squat. The Saints would be a cesspool floater without him.

Ryan is two years away from being someone’s backup. Being clumsy and slow footed are a couple of the main reasons why Ryan will never be elite, and it’s certainly possible he has already hit his ceiling. The same kool aid that was being passed around on these blogs last year is again being served and again I will let some dreamer or homer drink my glass just as they did last season!

it means matty meltdown is still 0-3 in the postseason and has thrown more picks than td’s in said games . it means he’s not elite and will never even sniff greatness unless he gets close to brees before the games this season !

@hiramsaint
All things being as they are, I think Matty has a chance to rise and get better while Brees is marking time with age with a team in decline. But… let’s not argue here because it really means nothing. We have two games to play… we’ll let that do our arguing for us :)

Called it!!! I said after your (Ledbetter) appearance that if that man gets an extension after having that absurd rookie contract (in terms of his base salary and signing bonus terms) it was going to be a cap killer! No amount of deferring payments is going to save some very important vets! Moreover, that DeCoud resigning is looking more horrid by the day! Good luck with that!!!

This is going to kill the NFL. Ultimate revenge by the Saints on the other owners. The owners failed to reel in an overzealous commissioner, and now the bar has been set ridiculously high. And Brees is not that young a QB. Can we say “Farve”?

Sports Agents are very happy people tonight. Meanwhile, the cost of NFL has just gone up, again. From the networks to the parking lots. Well played, Saints!

DOL – you know where this blog is going. Matty noodle arm, Matty melt down, blah, blah, blah. The Saints just paid number one in the league QB money for a maybe number six. QB’s success is measured by SB rings. We all know that. So, automatically Brady, Big Ben, and Eli are more deserving. Now, out of the current QB’s who have one ring; I would take Rodgers or Peyton over Brees. Brees is the beneficiary of Sean Payton’s scheme. SP knew Brees lacked arm strength, so, he designed screens, slants, and quick hitches because he knew after 20 yds. Brees struggles. That was proven in SD where they scheme for a deep vertical passing game. Brees could not deliver the deep toss and Rivers could, so, Rivers took his job. Maybe Drew will be honest with himself and give Sean some of that money. I am sure he can use it this year. As for as Matt Ryan goes, pay him the money when the time comes. I will drink realitycheck’s galss of kool aid for him. You haters need to drop off this blog.

Brees’ salary cap numbers will be $10.4 million, $17.4 million, $18.4 million, $26.4 million and $27.4 million.

Which means boys and girls, the Saints won’t have any salary cap casualities this year, and heck, we can go and sign a few more free agents with the $6 million in savings from the franchise tag figure, plus the 3 million that Vilma is putting up this year! LOL!

The Bree’s deal means that Matty can chalk up two division losses for each of the next five seasons. It also means Matty can expect a new head coach next year because Smitty will be fired after the birds go 8-8, miss the playoffs and fail to win the division.

First things first. Matt Ryan has not broken any records or has he or the Falcons done squat other than to get into a playoff game and get embarrased. He’s a good quartback but not the level of Drew Brees and Peyton Manning(in his heyday).
Next, the Cowboys are a joke. Rome is like a peice of glass even when they play well they do not do it week after week. Romo is just a pretty boy and should concentrate on being a professional golfer.

I commend you on your youthful enthusiasm, but I think you are about to be initiated again. If the Falcons have a great year(including postseason success),I will be the first to congratulate you and admit that I was all wrong. But until that happens, I am no believer in either Matt Ryan or this Falcon squad! BTW, my predictions regarding the Falcons have been pretty darn accurate for several years now. Two years ago, I had 10-6 with no postseason success( 13-3 w/o postseason success), and last year I had 9-7 and no post season success(10-6 w/o postseason success. I haven’t made my prediction for this season yet, but i’m leaning toward 9-7 and another playoff zero, and that’s if they make it.

I suspect this will be the last off season we see Saints fans trolling our boards…

By the end of the year no one will be talking about Brees or his contract. You know why? You guessed it boys and girls; the falcons will be the talk of the league. As they roll their way toward the success that they’re building for. You see, it takes time to build a winning organization. I look back at going into the 08 season with a rookie head coach and QB attempting to build a franchise that was in ruins. I would not have bet ten cents that four years later the Falcons would have made three playoff appearances. And you people get caught up on them not winning one. If you looked objectively at the big picture then you could see the progress this organization has made. Pretty amazing if you ask me. Soon, multiple SB rings.

I have lived through some very rough seasons from day one. So surely you can understand knowing the big picture that I can not be disappointed. That’s one of the positives of being a franchise long Falcons fan; after so many miserable seasons you become immune to disappointment. I am truly battle tested. This is the first time in all of those years that my team experienced back-to-back-to-back-to-back winning seasons. How could I be disappointed? This is the first time over all these years that I see progress. One day we will get there and I will be drinking the kool aid as I have all these years. The “E” word discussion is nothing more than media sensationalism. The general consensus is that there are three or so “elite” quarterbacks and everyone else sucks. The season before last, Drew Brees and Eli Manning were hardly in the “elite qb” discussion. Drew Brees had thrown over 20 picks and Eli was fairing worse than him. Meanwhile Matt Ryan, Aaron Rodgers, and Mike Vick were the best passers in the conference that year. And yet here we are one year later, yammering about how Eli is better than Peyton and hailing Drew Brees as the best to ever play the game (I still think Marino is the best to ever play qb, but I digress). In short, “elite” status changes really quickly. So to all the saints fans trolling on this blog, go ahead and talk trash. I won’t argue with you because you know what? Drew Brees is better than Matt Ryan (if all you’ve been looking for was a Falcon fan admitting to that, then there you have it, now please leave this blog!). But when Brees slips up along the way in his five year deal (he’s done it before), don’t go hold a pity party for yourselves, because the rest of us have had to endure your arrogant, obnoxious, and short-sighted idiocy.

I congratulate Brees on his contract. It is for what he has already done and for the fact that he brings excitement to a city mired in tragedy and riddled in crime. Brees is an elite QB and I admire his ability to thread the needle with some of those sideline passes. The Saints have had the Falcons number recently and yet (with the exception of the last game where the Saints kicked our butt) the previous 6 games games were decided by a total of 16 points (where the Falcons outscored the Saints 173-157). That is hardly dominant! Drew Brees was Drafted in 2001 and didn’t win a playoff game until 2006, having only made the Playoffs once until he broke though with a win and a loss in 2006 with New Orleans.
I am not worried about Ryan. His development is ahead of what Drew’s was at this point in his career. I had always respected Saints fans because like the TRUE Falcons fans we both pulled for our teams and never gave up hope. But I would advise people who think Drew was better than Matt at this point in their career, to do a little research. I congratulate you all on your Superbowl and am happy to see your city starting to do well again. I will never give up on my Falcons. We are poised to break through and I hope we do. I will say after watching them for 45 years and not having back to back winning seasons until Matty Ice and Mike Smith arrived, I am encouraged by the string of 4 they have put together!

Shouldn’t be much of an impact, Ryan is NOT the QB Brees is and might never be. Also, Brees has won a Super Bowl, Ryan hasn’t won a playoff game and has been a disaster in the 3 awful losses.

Some funny comments on here today. Should be interesting when the regular Season gets started. What worries me on the Falcons is that offensive line. Can they stand solid this year and hold up against the opponent’s defenses and not let them push them back into Matt Ryan and sack him ?

The Falcons have Camp and a Season to play. I agree with Michael that the OL has some work ahead of them. I think the new offensive scheme will help them. When the other teams can predict your play, the OL pays the price. I think we will see marked improvement this season.

“Ryan, who’s set to make a base salary of $11.5 million this season and $10 million next season, is nearing the end of a six-year, $72 million deal.

Ryan still has time to set his value. He wasn’t selected by the players as one of the top 100 players in the league. However, ESPN analyst Ron Jaworski selected him as the 11th rated quarterback in the league.

Under general manager Thomas Dimitroff, the Falcons have made it a practice to re-sign players to contract extensions in the last year of their deals if they plan to retain them.”

Matt Ryan built his stats during a period when the NFC South was the weakest it’s ever been ( except New Orleans). When it counted in the playoffs, Ryan has turned into a gimp every time. Fact is Matt Ryan couldn’t hold Brees’s jock if he tried. Fans aren’t buying it either as 790 am did a charity telethon last week and the Matt Ryan signed jersey was almost the last thing to go.

I love the comparisons between Brees and Ryan. I have read that Brees benefited from alot of screen passes, something Ryan has not. But set that aside, Ryan has a career passing average of 7 yards per pass. Brees has a career average of 7.4. So Brees has averaged 1 FOOT more per pass. WOW!!! I am seriously not impressed.

It wasn’t until the 2000 season that the Saints ever won a playoff game.

I agree. Ryan has done some incredible things since entering the NFL. He is probably one of the smartest QB’s in the league. He will only get better along with the rest of the team. Ryan was beaten in the playoffs by the eventual SB champs. I think people who judge him based on those 3 losses have missed the bigger picture. Let’s face it, Peyton won a total of 3 games in his first season.

Fact, Ryan has only played 2 and 3/4 quarters of serviceable football in his three playoff appearances. The rest has been nothing short of a train wreck… And that has nothing to do with whether those teams went on to the Super Bowl (Arizona lost by the way)…

Hey, Trent Dilfer went 29-14 in a three season period in Tampa… Guess what that got him? Yep, run out of town! It took the 2nd greatest defense in terms of scoring and super kick returner to get him to the promise land!

No superbowl for the falcons until we can beat the saints. Matt Ryan has a dismal record againt the saints. In his four seasons againt them he has won two games and lost six. Compared during the Vick era against the saints, vick won six and lost six..

As a falcon fan, I am worried. We are just not good enough to compete with the Saints. Recent years and games against them have shown that they are the better team. Honestly, i dont think the bounty thing had much to do with them winning the superbowl..The Saints offense put up a lot of points that year. In my opinion Matt Ryan is no Drew Brees. He has alot of growing to do.

Biggest difference is Brees & S Peyton’s offense mind. Ryan will get better and I hope Smitty is learning to be a better head coach. Choose good OC’s & DC’s but don’t micro-manage them. Nolan will improve the D. Koetter will be given the chance to improve the O. If he doesn’t, don’t keep him 4 years. Big mistake with MM. Two years will tell.
(DB awful 1st 4 yrs) gave Brees stats in his 1st 4 yrs. Matt exceeded his passing 63%. Brees won 45% of his games, Matt won 67%. Brees is about 6 1/2 years older.
Matt & Flacco – I can’t see much difference in the two. Win-loss, about the same. passing yds.-about the same. Matt’s 230 yds/gm to Flacco’s 216 – about the same. YPC, same. Matt 95 TD’s 46 int. Flacco 80 TD’s 46 int. – about the same. Only difference is playoff wins that Flacco has. In 2008 Flacco had 44% completions & 50.8 rating with 3 ints. and got 2 wins. In 2009 he had 53% completions with a 39.4 rating and got 1 win. In 2010 & 2011 he had 4 fumbles & got 2 wins. Must be nice to have a defense that carries you. Seems to be alot of comparing apples to oranges.

I agree with you PlanB. You just can’t accurately compare Ryan. For his few years in the league, he has done very well. No, he hasn’t won a playoff game, but neither has any other Falcon in the past 3 years. The day will come that the Falcons bring it home. It is only a matter of time. The Falcons have too many weapons, 2 new coaches, and a lot of desire and drive. One man doesnt win/lose a playoff game. It will take the whole team.

Falcon James – At least we’re respectable. For those that have been fans since the start, we’re very proud of our team as it is now. We also know that the difference to win the SB is just a couple of changes in FA and maybe a breakout year for a couple of our guys. We have as good a chance as anyone. I’m looking for our new coordinators to be the real difference. Falcon football is good again.

A few points…
-As I remember it, the saints won the superbowl primarily because of a cornerback not the quarterback.
- whoever said that drew brees is a system quarterback hit the nail squarely on the head
- the falcons would be crazy to let matt ryan go without a solid contract extension. he has not had a losing season. it is pointless to compare him to other quarterbacks’ success. he will be paid by his success compared to previous Falcons quarterbacks.

- I don’t have much interest in smack talk or doomsaying, but anyone who thinks the falcons won’t have a winning season is out of his or her mind
