OTA Report: Julio Jones shines, Hill on Konz

FLOWERY BRANCH – The Falcons finished up a spirited two-hour OTA practice early Wednesday afternoon.

Wide receiver Julio Jones continued to shine in the workouts.

“There is a little less weight on the top of his head with his dreads gone, but he’s had a very good camp for us as you saw today,” Falcons coach Mike Smith said. “He made some very nice catches and he’s been making those types of catches all through camp.”

For Jones, cutting his hair was about more than just a new look.

Gone are the dreadlocks that were a trademark for the Falcons wide receiver through his first year in Atlanta and his collegiate career at Alabama.

Jones cut his hair and donated it to a charity that helps children with cancer.

“We do a lot of community service here, and from going to a lot of hospitals and seeing all the kids who are fans of mine, I just cut my hair and donated it for leukemia patients,” said Jones.

Jones said he has run into a number of people who …

BIRDLAND – The Seattle Seahawks got in trouble with Commissioner Wyatt Earp, oops, I mean Roger Goddell on Tuesday.

Here’s the joint statement from the league and the NFLPA:

JOINT STATEMENT ON CBA VIOLATION BY SEATTLE SEAHAWKS

The NFL Management Council and NFL Players Association have determined that the Seattle Seahawks violated the Collective Bargaining Agreement’s offseason workout rules on the prohibition of live contact during one of the club’s organized team activity days (“OTA days”).

As a result, the Seahawks will forfeit two of their scheduled OTA practices (June 6 and 7) as well as an additional offseason workout day on Friday, June 8. Seahawks’ players are not permitted to be at the facility on those days, but will be paid for the sessions. The club cannot reschedule the cancelled days.

Ol’ Pete Carroll seems to have a …

Former Falcons wide receiver Andre Rison, who made at least $19.120 million in base salaries and signing bonuses over his 12-year NFL career, is among a group of retired athletes to address their financial problems in “Broke,” a ESPN documentary ESPN directed by Billy Corben scheduled to be released in October.

The documentary “digs into the psychology of men whose competitive nature carries them to victory on the field and ruin off it.”

Rison, 45, played for the Falcons from 1990-94. He caught 423 passes for 5,633 yards and 56 touchdowns over his five seasons with the Falcons. The AJC caught up with Rison back in 2009 for this “Whatever happened to.  …” story.

Over his career, Rison made base salaries ranging from $175, 000 in 1990 to $2.8 in 1996.

He also amassed $10.84 million in signing bonus. He also likely made additional millions in reporting, workout bonuses and other incentives.

Rison …

FLOWERY BRANCH — In order for the Falcons’ offense to soar under new coordinator Dirk Koetter, Pro Bowl wide receiver Roddy White figures that he must do less.

“I know that sounds crazy, but we’ve got other guys out there that can play,” White said. “Julio [Jones] is going to be a big part of the offense this year. Harry [Douglas] is going to do wonders in the slot. We have to maximize our talent and get the ball in everyone’s hands.”

White, a three-time Pro Bowler, has been the most productive wide receiver in the NFL over the past two seasons in terms of receptions. He led the NFL with 115 catches in 2010 and was second with 100 in 2011.

White, who’s set to enter his eighth season, became the eighth player in NFL history with five consecutive seasons with at least 80 catches and 1,000 yards receiving in 2011. He also led the league with …

Last season, Sports Illustrated picked the Falcons to win the Super Bowl.

Heading into the 2012 season, they are not so high on the Falcons.

They believe the Falcons are a playoff team and not much more.

FLOWERY BRANCH – Falcons starting defensive tackle Corey Peters suffered a foot injury this offseason and is expected back by the start of training camp, according to the team.

Peters, a third-round pick in the 2010 NFL draft (83rd overall), has started 30 of 32 regular-season games.

Last season, he had three of the team’s 33 sacks, scored a touchdown on a 13-yard fumble return against Jacksonville and had an interception against Carolina. He finished with 33 tackles, two passes defensed and six tackles for losses.

With Peters set to miss the rest of the organized team activities and the mandatory minicamp (June 19-21), defensive tackle Peria Jerry will pick up most of his work alongside Jonathan Babineaux.

In addition to Peters, rookie tackle Lamar Holmes (toe), …
