Roddy White plummets 41 spots in top 100 ranking

Falcons wide receiver Roddy White did not do a flip over his current Top 100 ranking.

BIRDLAND — Falcons wide receiver Roddy White dropped 41 spots on “NFL Network’s The Top 100: Players of 2012” show on Wednesday.

After leading the league with 115 catches after the 2010 season, he was ranked 24th. He caught 100 passes for 1,296 yards and eight touchdowns last season, but also led the league in drops with 15.

White, the controversial Twitter master and Pro Bowl receiver, was fine with being on the list, but believes he was ranked too low.

“I don’t have an argument; I’m just happy to be on this list,” White said. “But not where I’m at. I’m not happy with where I’m at on the list; I’m happy to be on the list.”

White cited his dropped passes, most of which came early in the season, for his plummet  in the rankings.

“Probably the dropped passes; I led the league in drops, which is unacceptable,” White said. “I have to go out there and I have to play better, I have to hold onto the ball. But other than that, I feel like I performed well, I felt like I did pretty well this season.

“I felt that I should have been at least in the top five [wide receivers]; right now I’m fighting to be in the top 10. I’m kind of confused right now.”

White believes that adding Julio Jones last season has helped him tremendously. Jones finished with 54 catches for 959 yards and eight touchdowns while basically playing in 11 games. He missed two games and major parts of three others with hamstring injuries.

“He’s done wonders for me,” White said. “I get a lot more one-on-one coverages and things like that. And I’m mad that Julio isn’t on the list! Unless he’s ahead of me, but I’m saying that would be ridiculous [laughing]. I’m not saying that in that form or fashion because he’s going to be a great player for years to come and he’s very explosive.”

VIDEO: White’s reaction.

The Falcons were 13-3 in 2011 and finished 10-6 last season. The team’s three-game slide may have hurt White’s ranking.

“The schedule was a little bit harder,” White said. “Anytime you win 13 games you play all of the big dogs the following year. That was tough on us but like you said, we have to go out there and win 13, 14 [games], try to go undefeated. Maybe I’ll move up the list a little bit.”

Falcons running back Michael Turner was ranked 88 in an earlier show. White doesn’t believe the show is giving the Falcons the proper amount of respect.

“And he was third in the league in rushing,” White said. “How do you be [No. 88] on the countdown and you’re third in the league in rushing?”

White was also asked about quarterback Matt Ryan and if he was a top eight quarterback.

“He’s got to be one of the top eight quarterbacks,” White said. “In this league, in the league that we play in right now, he’s got to be at least in the top eight.”

@Joe TFH: Do you even know the meaning of thug? He’s a football player. He talks on twitter, he talks on camera. Who cares? The Falcons 2012 season is what it is. Dead and gone. Let’s move on to 2013 and get this SB ring 3 years in a row!

Who cares about the Aints? If you do not respond to these idiot Aint fans, they will feel the same as I feel about their team: IGNORED. Roddy is a good receiver. My only problem with him is he drops touchdown catches and that results in six points off the board. Nobody talked or carried as much flare as Prime Time. However, Prime Time also “Walked the Walk.” So, Roddy if you are going to “Talk the Talk” then you should “Walk the Walk.” People keep saying, Matt Ryan is 0-3 in the playoffs. Did Matt go out there and play by himself? Teams win together and lose together. So Roddy, please concern yourself with the team’s achievements and not just your own. Make it a priority to catch every potential touchdown pass thrown your way. Do that and I will be the first one interested in anything you have to say. BTW, isn’t the Top 100 voted on by the players and not NFL Network?

Rollo Lawson is right on about his comment..besides, an 0-3 playoff record over the last 4 years speaks louder than a 43-21 regular season record for the Falcons.

@JR1967-Curious as to the logic you applied to come up with that? 43-21 means you are on track to achieving the bigger picture. That is, building a powerhouse who are perennial winners year in and year out. Then, you have the opportunity to compete for the title every year. Each year, you add pieces to increase your odds of winning it all or stay at the top if you are already there. I think that is the way the game is approached. You do not discredit your accomplishments because of your failures.

Yes Roddy it was the drops. If Matt’s going to go out of his way to throw you the football, the least you can do is to catch it for him. Every time you’re rude enough to drop one of his passes, his completion percentage goes down, the chains don’t get moved, and he has to sit on the bench. This makes Matt sad. You don’t want to make Matt sad do you? Please catch the football Roddy. this makes everybody happy. When every bodies happy, even your lame twitters look funny.

@Statick Hey, everyone has their own opinion.lol I respect yours. I honestly dont care. Live and let live I guess for me. I understand your passion for the squad though.

Someone asked earlier if Ryan is on the list. I dont think he is for some reason. Gonzales will be the last Bird on the list this time. Its actually a good thing. Hopefully Ryan realizes that people are noticing him a lot more. Cant hide behind the hype ANYmore. This is the year perception of the guy they call Ice solidifies or melts.

“He’s out to speak — rain, sleet or snow. We need that. FREE SPEECH FOR RODDY!!! (Hate the dudes who hide when things aren’t going well.)”

There is a difference between talking because you have something cognitive and relative to a subject and someone like Roddy who makes good copy (in a dramatic sense) because he’s never developed a filter… He’s not T.O. or Freddie Mitchell crazy and emotionally untethered, but he’s searches for a reason to be heard off the field to his detriment.

It true Roddy flap his gum too much, but in the off-season who cares. Glad he recognize the fact that he drop too many balls. Good he can admit it. That the first step in his 12 step program.

Now lets gets back to making fun of the lowly Saint and they one fan!

Roddy had a terrible year as evident by his league leading 16 drops. He can’t be counted on to make a third down catch. He cost us FOUR first downs against the Giants that would have at least allowed us to run 12 more plays. I believe he is the most overpaid player on the Falcons.

my belief is that the Saints may refuse to sign Drew Brees, chalk it up as a lost season, and lose enough games to get next years number one QB and start over. No coach, No players, no GM, no one will blame them.
Brees is no longer a elite QB, he is one year away from has been area.

BS “ranking” show anyway. Would love to see the metrics, I seriously doubt any players even voted. It’s about like the “coaches” poll in college football. Yeah right.

I have no idea where Roddy ranks but I’m still a big fan. I like his personality and I think he’s fun to watch. I do wish he would not press send sometimes, but he plays hard and seems to have a lot of fun. I like that.

I wish the NFL and CFB would get rid of celebration penalties too though. It’s supposed to be fun. If some guys hand the ball off to the ref fine. A little USFL every now and then is fine.

Nelson is a good WR but do you think he would do well if he was the #1 WR for Green Bay? The Packers went to the Super Bowl because their defense got hot at the right time and because of Aaron Rodgers.

The Big Picture on Roddy White:
–Very good receiver. More than a chain-mover, but not a game-breaker. Good speed, great routes, plays physical, goes over the middle. A Hines Ward with more stretch speed.
–Production wise, Top 5 receiver. Impact wise, Top 10-15 receiver. 70% of catches for first downs. Does not threaten secondaries on speed/athleticism. More with guile and timing.
–Had an off-season with drops, but will return to form. Will also begin to lose some speed (age 30).
–Next two years: Julio Jones will become the #1 option, and Roddy will become a very good possession guy. Still has the ability to burn mistakes deep, but will not turn the 5 yarder into 50. Can consistently make the 20 yard catch, if the routes can develop through protection.

Aints lost to the Bears, Seahawks, and 49ers in three of their four playoff runs over the last few years. Yeah, they are really putting fear in the hearts of the NFL. I can see why their dillusional fans think they are SB material. Question, How many of you Falcons fans troll the Aints blog? I think I know the answer.
