Falcons sign second-round pick Peter Konz, three other draft picks

Atlanta Falcons top draft pick Peter Konz does his "Dirty Bird" dance saying he " I'm bringing back the Dirty Bird" at the end of his first day of practice with the team in Flowery Branch, Friday, May 11, 2012.

FLOWERY BRANCH — The Falcons signed second-round draft pick Peter Konz to a four-year, $3.58 million deal on Sunday.

Konz, who was projected to be selected in the first round of the draft, was picked by the Falcons with the 55th overall pick, in the second round. His deal includes a $1.05 million signing bonus.

The Falcons also signed rookie draft picks fullback Bradie Ewing (fifth rounder), safety Charles Mitchell (sixth) and defensive tackle Travian Robertson (seventh) on Sunday. Terms of those deals were undisclosed.

Konz spent most of the practice during the three-day rookie minicamp at right guard and received some snaps at center.

“I thought Peter did a nice job,” Falcons coach Mike Smith said after the first practice. “Of course, Peter is being cross-trained at two positions. It’s obvious that he’s a big strong guy.”

Konz is expected to compete for the starting right guard position against several veterans. However, he hasn’t played guard on a regular basis since high school.

“I actually switched off from tackle to guard whenever we had a pulling play my junior year [of high school],” Konz said. “That’s how I got into pulling and all of that.”

The Falcons liked Konz in part because he is light on his feet and moves around well for a big guy. He flashed his movement skills on a couple of plays that called for him to get outside.

He attributes his good feet to playing basketball and running track in high school.

Konz, and the other 45 players on hand for the minicamp, arrived Thursday.

The Falcons hope to have their entire six-person draft class signed by the end of the Sunday or Monday at the latest.

The process of signing rookies is easier under the new collective bargaining agreement, whch created a wage scale and a new slotting system. There are just a few key points that call for negotiation.

thats good that they have him signed but I really wish we could have drafted TE Allen or another playmaker with the second pick….I think its a waste to draft OL that high in the draft when there were better players on the board

Konz will make the falcan’t team, no doubt, but he won’t be an impact player…probably on the inactive squad at least 3/4 of the season, and won’t get on the field without starters sustaining injuries.

@ mecca12, you obviously have not ever played organized football. The linemen are the heart and soul of a team. A high school RB looks all pro when running through large holes. A small college QB can complete a 40 yard pass when the line gives him long enough. Just saying, maybe you should study the game a little before making uninformed statements. Yes, In school I was a two way lineman and all middle-Georgia two years.

@tallcarl I have studied the game plenty and probably know more than u, it is much easier to coach up linemen to block then it is to try and coach a player to be a playmaker…athleticism and playmaking ability type players are far and few between therefore I rather draft the players that I know will be playmakers for me than someone who just stands there and blocks
maybe u should take your own advice and hit the books and study the game more

Hey ‘South ga boy in the atl’ ease up on ol’ “Seen thisB4″ he’s trying to cope with the realization that his ‘Aints were a dirty low down bunch of cheating scumbags. Now he is having to deal with his feelings of “Falcons Envy”. You know that is the real reason he hangs around the Falcon Blogs because he always knew that the Falcons were better than his ‘Aints on so many levels. Now that it has been exposed to the world what scumbags they really were he wants to join us. You know it wouldn’t really surprise me if he changes his handle to something else just so he can blend in with the rest of the Falcon faithful.

Great video ATLJBO, I just hope we are able to stay healthy this year because I know our defense will be great. It is the offense that we have to generate. Even though we lost to the Giants our defense were the only ones to put points on the board.

Hey DOL–what’s the playing statusof Mike Johnson and Andrew Jackson? Johnson came with a great pedigree and Andrew Jackson had been hurt which dropped his draft stock. Are both recovered from injuries? Didn’t Johnson end up in the dog house with the last regime?
I keep thinking that if either one of these guys are Manoui is recovered from his injuries there’s still a chance Konz will be the staring center this year. Hey, it’s all new offensive philosophy and Smitty keeps saying the best guys will start and it’s an open competition.

Listen up ladies, the New Orleans Saints have had a tremendous off-season, they have been the dominant subject of the entire NFL, made significant off season signings to replace the free agents they lost and upgraded their defensive posture. Sure, they have not signed Drew Brees yet, but it will happen, you know it and I know it. This team is going to eviscerate every team on their schedule and defend the NFCS crown once again.
As for the poreous and erroneous proclaimations that stipulate the Saints won their Super Bowl crown cause they cheated: Your claims don’t hold water. You should all have a conference call with Goodell, who justified his unwarranted penalties on “off-field” violations, not on-field violations. You can all claim that the Saints’s championship has an asterisk, but at the NFL, that Championship, is still considered pristine and genuine. Eat your hearts out ladies!!

Actually, unlike Mark Ingram is what YOU meant.

Ingram played in the Saints nationally televised season inaugural game against Green Bay last year, leading all Saints running backs with 13 carries that night. Konz will be on the inactive squad when your team opens. Remember that, THater. Tell you what, let’s compare your team’s first pick in the second round to our team’s first pick in the third round this year, see which one is suited up and which one has is wearing a T-shirt for their respective first game.

I hope this works out but I feel the Falcons should have used Round 2-3 and 5 on players who can make an immediate impact and help win the Super Bowl. We got some depth with these picks but not impact players and our 2-3 picks have history of injuries. If we are building for the future then this is good but the Falcons need to come out and say that. But iof the goal is to go to the SUPER BOWL THIS YEAR then TD and Coach Smith better stop play cute and get the players in here who can win this thing. Tony G is retiring and Turner is getting close, the theme is WIN NOW! Tampa and Carolina will soon be on our backs. We lose in the first round and the fans will lose heart and our great owner will never get that new stadium built!

Being the dominant subject of conversation when it comes to the dregs of the NFL, you mean. I mean dang, you had the FBI and the state police investigating your sorry butts. Anthony Hargrove told on ya, he’s so glad he’s not a Taint anymore. So is Carl Nicks, who saw the writing on the wall. You know you will sign Brees because it’s the only hope you have of remaining relevant and besides, he’s all about the money. He won’t get more elsewhere, so he’ll stay and wear your dirty rags for now. You might want to start drafting as many QBs as you can though. When things go downhill, they will go fast. Keep focusing on the past (2009). It’s all you got. Another hurricane is coming. LOL
