Just four days after being cleared to return to work from knee surgery, the Falcons released former Pro Bowl fullback Ovie Mughelli on Tuesday.

“I’m still kind of digesting it,” Mughelli said by phone on Tuesday. “It’s something that I knew was a possibility. It didn’t come too much as a surprise. It’s something that happens in every player’s career. I know that I’m still one of the best fullbacks out there. Right now, I just have to be patient and work with my agent to see what’s the next step that we’re going to take. ”

The Falcons recently selected fullback Bradie Ewing in the fifth round of the NFL draft.

Mughelli had a salary cap number of $3.7 million for 2012. The team will receive relief.

Mughelli was originally signed as an unrestricted free agent on March 2, 2007. He was signed to a six-year, $18 million contact with a $5 million signing bonus. It was the largest contact given to a fullback in NFL history at the time.

He appeared in 69 games in his five seasons with the Falcons, including 38 starts.

In 2011, Mughelli saw action in seven games and hauled in four receptions for 25 yards with two touchdowns before suffering a season-ending knee injury against the Detroit Lions on Oct. 23.

He was viewed as expendable in the new offense under coordinator Dirk Koetter, which will mostly utilize three receivers.  A fullback will be utilized about 20 percent of the time.

Mughelli was not ready to rule out a return to the Falcons with a re-structured contract.

“It’s a possibility,” Mughelli said. “[Falcons general manager Thomas] Dimitroff and my agent are talking.”

Mughelli was recently cleared to return to work from the knee injury.

“Right now, I’m just about to head to work out,” Mughelli said. “I have to stay in top shape, top form. I was cleared to workout with the team on Friday. Practiced with the team on Monday and got cut today. I’m able to run, jump and catch. I can definitely help some team win whether if it’s the Falcons or somewhere else.”

A crushing lead-blocker, Mughelli paved the way for three 1,300-yard-plus seasons

for running back Michael Turner, including a 1,699-yard season in 2008.

“It was very special,” Mughelli said of his time with the Falcons. “I said that my time in Baltimore was very special when I was a youngster. But my time here in Atlanta was twice as special.

“I got the chance to play with a great like Tony Gonzalez. Get coached under Mike Smith and have some special relationships in my running back [meeting] room with Michael Turner, Jason Snelling and even Jacquizz [Rodgers]. It’s been a pleasure working with those guys and winning games. . . I definitely have some great memories from my time with the Falcons. I’m looking forward to making some new ones.”

The Falcons salary cap issues have been severe this offseason as they focused on re-signing their own players. They struck deals with defensive end John Abraham, safety Thomas DeCoud, wide receiver Harry Douglas, defensive end Kroy Biermann, center Todd McClure and quarterback Chris Redman. They also signed linebacker Lofa Tatupu and guard Vince Manuwai as free agents.

The team also placed the franchise tag on cornerback Brent Grimes, who’s set to make $10.281 million after signing his tender. They also traded a seventh round pick for cornerback Asante Samuel.

Because of their salary cap restraints, the Falcons were not able to re-sign middle linebacker Curtis Lofton, who signed a modest five-year, $27.5 million deal with the New

Orleans Saints. He was a four-year starter and the team’s leading tackler in each of the past three seasons.

The issue of the tight salary cap likely led the Falcons to select Ewing, who’s a good blocker and pass catcher. He was widely considered the best fullback in the draft.

Dimitroff did not want to address Mughelli’s status or the team’s financial situation after the conclusion of the draft.

“I don’t want to comment on financial situations and our cap situation publicly,” Dimitroff said. “That’s what we discuss back in our offices.”

To make all of their offseason moves, the Falcons have been scrambling. They’ve restructured the contracts of  cornerback Dunta Robinson and left guard Justin Blalock in order to free up $2.99 million.

The Falcons could use the space provided by the release of Mughelli to fit in the rookie class and perhaps add a veteran salary-cap casualty.

Based on the performance of the two last seasons, I agree with Dled. Ray Edwards was overpaid and Lofton was just about right for a MLB who has lead his team in tackles for 4 years. Doesn’t mean i would pay Lofton that much.

Ovie is going to be successful in whatever he does from here on out. I’m still mad that his Falcons career would be ended on such a sloppy terrible tackle from Delmas.

Good Luck Ovie, we will miss you as a Falcons player, but I hope to see you around Atlanta in the future!

Since he’s coming off injury and, although still very good on the downside of his career, I’d say there is at least the possibility that we resign he later to a much smaller deal.

@ chc4

I don’t pretend to know what goes into the decision making at FB, but my guess would be that DeCoud was kept because there was no legitimate shot at getting a starting caliber safety in the later rounds of the draft. There is still the possiblity that a veteran safey will free up from another team.

DeCoud is still young, and therefore can still be taught to be a good safety in Nolan’s defense. He has the athletic ability, his problems seem to be more mental than physical.

I agree with you about Decoud that he should not have been resigned, especially for the mony he got.Safety is our weak spot on this Team and Decoud is not the answer. We need help back there BIG TIME.Oh yeah, that other guy TD drafted out of Montana last year needs to go.He don’t add nothing to this Team, even on special team.I don’t.even want to talk about playing safety.TD,we need safety help if this TEAM is going to be great!

DLed, Any chance this is to clear room for an unnamed Defensive End currently squabbling with his super bowl winning team over a contract extension and who would immediately turn a less than average dline into a pass sacking menace? We surely can’t again be going into yet another season with no real pass rush outside the aging Abe? We did not draft a potential starter, projects yes, but no starters at DE out of the last several drafts.

Birdman — This looks like a move to stay above board and fit the rookies in and have a few nickels left over.

So Ewing is the best FB in the draft but our new offense doesn’t use FBs? The reason he was cut now after being cleared to play is to avoid an injury settlement. Again Ewing did not lift at the combine so no one knows what kind of player pro he is. So we go into the season without a FB that has starting NFL experience. And don’t say Shelling. I said FB

This move makes sense for Atlanta. If our new scheme doesn’t utilize a FB much (20% of plays), there’s no need to tie up almost $4 million in the position. Bradie Ewing (our new one) was the best FB in the draft and will be our guy for the next decade. He can run, block, and catch. We’re set at the position.

Still, though, I hate to see Ovie go. Great player and a great person… take care, Ovie!

Brian Hunt

Hate to see him go, but I totally see the logic of the move. He won’t play special teams the way that Ewing does and a team that only uses the FB 20% of the time needs that player to be a big part of special teams. It would be nice to see him return at a lower figure, but I’m not sure that it makes sense to stock multiples at the position.

Its a shame that Ovie had to get cut. Surely there must have been other areas that could have been cut instead of perhaps the Falcons #1 locker room guy and team player. Ovie was a joy to be a Falcon. He gave the organization everything he had both on and off the court. Ovie represented the Falcons well and was probably the highest character guy on the team. I remember when Ovie was a semi-regular on 680 and how articulate and self-deprecating he was. A true gentleman in the midst of so many egotistical crybabies. Ovie was an excellent player withe the Falcons, and an asset to the community. I hope they can re-structure his contract and bring him back. He may be a front-office person when his playing days end.

Rather release DeCoud, Owens and Jerry as financial move (and to make the team better). Maybe that happens later and we can re-sign Ovie. Who will hurt us more this year? Our weak Kicker Off man or our new last place ranked OF Coordinator or the strength coach that has beer belly Linemen without strength.

Sorry to loose Ovie. He is 250 pounds of shear hurt. I hope he finds a good home somewhere on a team that does not play the Falcon. He made alot of people think twice about stepping in front of him.

I wish DOL would check the IP address of the guy posing as my man Jim who uses my informal name. I know when it really Jim because he alway has something positive and intellegent to say. He also would never dis DOL. Whoever impostering him is quite annoying and I hope DOL matches his IP address and block him.

As the real FJ, I know he will ban me. He has before. I expect it. I am normally a good boy and a good Falcon fan. But this has gone too far. It is disgusting he allowed it to go this far. Screw it. I don’t care. I’ll find another Falcon blog that is run professionally.

Thanks Falcon James (my formal breatheran.) BYE.

@Falcon Jim, I am still unsure if you are really you. Answer me one question. If you were me, on a scale from one to ten, how would I rank Robinson as our best corner back. Also, since I know you and I have talked before, would you say that I am a fan John Abraham?

No. We are not the same the person. The first time Falcon Jim and I ever talked, he made a joke about me using his formal name. Not the same person. Him calling me “breatherin” was another inside from a blog a couple years ago. The real FJ will also know how to answer my question above.

Falcon James – I was not going to post anymore, except I wanted to respond to your kind remarks.
You will know it is me by this history. About three years ago I befriended Hiram Saint for a short while. We mentioned going to the same church, etc. (Of course, that had to end.)

Anyway, it was the real me that blasted Ledbetter earlier on this same page. I am not being defeated by the stalking jerk. I am leaving because Ledbetter has been inadequate and asleep at the wheel. HE forces me to leave because HE can’t see right from wrong. HE can’t determine who the good guys are and who the bad guys are (even though he can see all our IP addresses.)

I don’t know for sure who the ignominious stalker is. It could be OPEN, but he emphatically denies it. He definitely said some things that would indict him……………but it could have been someone hacking his name.

It sure fits the mode of SeenThisB4. He did a lot of this stuff a couple years ago.

Anyway, to all my friends on this blog over these years, good-bye and God-Bless.

Falcon James…………I would stay if Ledbetter would do the right thing. Weed out the bad guys, which he could do. Of course, he would have to man-up and realize the only thing I did wrong was blame HIM for being wrong. But I doubt he would let me stay.

Thanks James.

Hello gents, you guys have helped this female Falcons fan here several times in my attempt to understand the game better. Thanks for clearing up zone coverage vs man to man and various other football questions. Other than cap room, why would they cut Ovie? Didn’t he have a lot to do with Turners 1000+ yards past few seasons?

Is the new OCs offense not using the FB position?

Without Ovie what good is Turner. Should have cut em both. Turner’s old, fat and slooow! Needs a hole a truck could drive through to get 3 yards. Forget the corner. He’s out of gas way before he gets there.
