Caught up with Falcons general manger Thomas Dimitroff at the team’s community service project on Thursday.

Here’s the blog on that.

I wanted to follow-up on his radio interview about the cornerbacks and he elaborated on the plan. He said Dunta Robinson, Brent Grimes and Asante Samuel will all get some action inside.

“Dunta has played inside at Houston and has a desire to play inside as well and that’s positive,” Dimitroff said. “He did a nice job down there. When he came to us, he’s been outside-only as you know. I understand that he’s looking forward to jumping back inside and spending some time in there as well. There is a good chance that all of those guys will be spending time inside and out.”

The theme of the training camp will be “open competition.”

“They’ll be competing for their positions and where they’ll be playing,” Dimitroff said. “Like Mike Smith has said, this is a very, very competitive year at a number of positions. We are excited about having Asante on board to improve the talent in our secondary.”

He was excited about watching the new rookies, drafted and undrafted, next Friday through Sunday at the rookie minicamp.

He had a group assessment to share about the undrafted players.

“Interestingly enough, as a group, it seems like at virtually every position grouping there are guys that are going to be very interesting to monitor through the process,” Dimitroff said.

We likely will not get the team’s first “unofficial” depth chart until late July. However, that will not keep us from stacking our own unofficial depth chart.

The Falcons have filled their roster at 90 players, the maximum number allowed by league rules.

Most interesting take, to me, is Cody Pearcy as defacto presumptive heir to Weems returner spot. That will be a very interesting battle, to me. Hard to argue with his speed, though.

Intriguing take on the depth chart, thanks, DOL.

Think we can safely call Mike Johnson a bust. 3rd year coming up for a #3 draft choice and he’s 4th on the RG depth chart? Ouch. And I guess Garrett Reynolds is on his way out too. Dimitroff’s drafting of OL has been quite awful. Let’s hope Konz and Holmes pan out.

The depth is getting better and I am sure the coaches love that! I would call our man Jason Snelling a RB2. If Turner goes down, he will be the guy to carry the rock. Competition will be interesting at LT and among the speedy WR behind our top 3. The defensive secondary took a big step forward and the rookies will be pushing for a roster spot. I suspect that we have an improvement over Weems in both WR depth and the return game. A couple of guys that I want to watch in practice are DE Jonathan Massaquoi and TE/WR Lamark Brown. Both these guys appear to have special talents and could develop into special players or at least make others at their position step it up a notch. Thanks D-Led for putting it together for our first look at the 2012 Falcons… I can’t wait!

are you serious, DOL? pearcy as the starting PR and KR? you must think this kid is exceptional, a true diamond in the rough, for him to even make the roster, let alone be a starter on opening day. you must think douglas as PR and smith/quizz as KR is just outlandish. c’mon, man.

(also, snelling not even on the depth chart at tailback??)

I have to echo Delbert’s question: Snelling is a complete non-factor?? Although I know Turner has run for a lot of yards over the years, much of that has come from high # of carries. Seems to have a LOT of ineffective runs, and I get the sense he’s got little gas left in the tank. Too much hesitant tip-toeing to the line hoping a hole opens up in front of him….no lateral ability left at all….a large % of his tackles are essentially made by his own OLinemen, as he just runs up their backs.

Snelling has greater quickness, almost as much power, runs much more aggressively and appears to have greater vision/instinct. Can’t figure out why he’s not getting the touches.

Personally, I would be good with a backfield on most plays of Snelling and Quizz – lots there for the defense to worry about every play.

Smith and Nance are not ahead of Snelling in the RB depth chart. Snelling is Turner’s backup, period, but will also be used in other packages and occasionally as a FB. Jaquizz is a pure package player. Thankfully Mularkey’s not around anymore to call “Jaquizz up the middle”. Jerious Norwood should sue Mularkey for shortening his career with those insane play calls.

Who’s the backup FG kicker? Every position should have a backup.

I can’t wait to see Pearcy battle for a roster spot.

DOL,

Is there any word out on what positions or players the Falcons are planning to use the 3 million dollars cap space credit, given to them by the NFL for the Michael Vick bankruptcy-bonus recovery thing?

P.S
This is not a Vick bashing comment. The man made bad decisions, paid and went to jail for those bad decisions, and people just need to get over it!!! Only god can judge and we all need to practice forgiveness as he would.

Ken Strickland

This is not a well thought out lineup. First, TD and Smitty have made it perfectly clear since the Giants gm that they intended to get bigger and stronger along our OL to prevent a repeat of our total failures in those 3rd and short situations. This OFF lineup guarantees a repeat of last yr, especially at RG(JHawley) and OC(TMcClure), which is where the problem was most evident.

Secondly, TMcClure is 35yrs old and on a 1yr contract, and we’re looking for a longterm solution at OC. Both Hawley and Konz are bigger, stronger, younger, more athletic and mobile, so why take another step back with McClure? Hawley did a decent job overall at RG, but when it came to moving defenders off the ball in key situations, he didn’t get it done. MJohnson and Konz are bigger, stronger, and are better options.

If you understand anything about the new VERTICAL OFF Koetter will impliment, and I posted a link that explains it, then you’ll know that pass protection, especially for our LT, will take on an entirely different approach than it did under Mularkey. Here’s what I don’t understand about some of the ignorance that keeps getting put out there by some of these so called experts about Holmes being unable to start this yr.

They say there’s no way he can beat out SBaker or WSvitek, due to their starting experience and his alledged issues with speed pass rushers. Well, if any of these clowns watched SBaker and WSvitek last yr, they woud know just how much of an issue both of these players had with speed rushers, and their experience didn’t help them or MRyan one doggone bit.

So, why is it perfectly acceptable to make that an issue with a rookie LT, that has tremendous room for improvement, but not make it an issue for a couple of vets with the same problem, and limited room for improvement? Bottomline, how in the devil are we suppose to get bigger and stronger along our OL by starting last yrs weak links and putting our bigger and stronger OLinemen at the bottom of our depth chart?

Defensively, it’s been proven that CB COwens is a far better defender on the outside than inside at NCB. Therefore, why list him as a NCB, unless you’ve forgotten the Packer gm?

In D-Led’s defense, the initial depth chart usually lists the vets ahead of the rookies. The final depth chart at the end of training camp normally shows the progression up the depth chart by the younger players who have stood out in camp and pre-season games.

Second… Is this DOL’s or the team’s depth chart?

E-Roll

May 4th, 2012
10:32 am

Ronnie Mack – DOL has included the nickel back as the starter because we will pull a lb a lot of times to off set 3 receiver sets so you have to show your nickel and your starting lb’s on the list which brings it up to 12.

Also Pooler is spot on, this is the depth chart going into camp so you can not just instantly plug a draftee into the starting line up. Matt Ryan did not get the starting job until the end of preseason so you can’t expect a 2nd, 3rd or later draftee to be penciled in yet.

Don’t worry about Snelling he will be first off the sideline to replace Turner when the games start.

I agree with Brownie on this one. Sometimes in this league there isn’t going to be a gaping hole to run through. You try and get what you can instead of running to the sidelines or running up the back of your linemen. It seems Turner has lost his ability to make even the slowest guy on D to miss.

its a NEW REGIME new Coordinators on both sides, DIFFERENT SCHEMES…different GAME PLANS…you dont know how effective Turner will be in this seasons offense… Mularkey is not here anymore, so i doubt we continue the same predictable run up the middle on 1st and 2nd…

and for those who question Jacquizz running ability up the middle…he might be 5′7 but he’s 198 200 solid… thats like having a 5′10 244lb running back on the roster…oh wait, we do….some dont know football and shud just save what they say for moments with their boys and not times like these when all falcons fans can realize your incompetence

***************************************************
I am glad you are here………….finally somebody who knows everything. But, nonetheless I will attempt to counter your input.
Turner is not fast to the line, he does tiptoe, lacks the vision to see the hole, and cannot cut outside to either direction, resulting in an O line butt thump. This is Turner’s modus operandi and though we hope the new coaches and personnel on the O line will open holes big enough to drive a semi thru without the vision Turner may continue the ol’ butt thump.

I’ll agree, Jaquizz Rogers is solid and much more durable than Jerious Norwood , but I am looking forward to some actual screen passes and sweeps with the ball in his hands. Fairly incompetent on your part to say he is ” like having a 5′10 244lb running back” , he is not. We are in trouble if we try to pound the middle with Rogers, save for an occasional shovel pass. You say “i doubt we continue the same predictable run up the middle on 1st and 2nd…”, I think you will prove to be wrong but we’ll have to debate that in December.

It’s obvious you feel an element of empowerment that you can be that condescending hiding behind a computer keyboard but if you are like that with friends or family I doubt you have any.

With that said I would like to make an appeal to the Falcons coaches to work with Matt Ryan on his QB sneak technique. No leg drive, his knees never extend, his feet never leave the ground, he ducks his head (hell, I don’t blame him).

DOL…you didnt want to make the hard call. I think Asante and Grimes start, with Robinson playing the nickel.

I think that the new D Coordinator may start the three of them and choose between starting DeCoud or Moore at FS. Thats why James Sanders became dispensable.

The days of a roaming, hard hitting SS that is a liability in coverage are over…just like the days of facing a RB that carries the ball 40 times a game are over. I actually think Moore is more of a playmaker, but his eargerness to lay people out could be a liability in coverage.

With the extra cap space, I want to see the Falcons bring in a veteran LT and/or MLB. Once that happens…we are set.

KEN STICKLAND – It is a very well thought out lineup. Spent two days working on it. I decided that the veterans will hold their spots until they have been beaten out. The Falcons have played rookies, but that’s because they didn’t have anything else. I don’t see Konz coming in and winning a job right away when he only benches 18 to 22. He’ll get steamrolled. Holmes is not ready to play left tackle. He’ll have to be developed. You don’t find starting left tackles in the second or third rounds. It’s Baker’s job. Lately I have been reading a lot of comments saying that the Falcons chances of winning the division are much improved because of the turmoil in N.O. Please don’t fall into that trap. The strength of the Saint’s team is their offense. The defense never was that great to begin with, so I doubt the suspensions will make that much of a difference.

The Falcons need to get better, period. They have new O and D coordinators that will be implementing new schemes and packages. Love that they got Rogers (the other Rogers). Watched both of them at OSU and was hoping one of the two would get here in ATL. Wow, both!! My biggest concern is the schedule. Look at the last 10 games starting with Philly on the road. If we don’t get out to a good start against the AFC, this season will be almost impossible to finish strong. Every one of the 10 teams will be in wild card contention or will impact the wild card.

Can someone please tell me how they come up with these schedules? My other team is Seattle. They only went 7-9 and didn’t make the playoffs, but they play 5 or their first 8 on the road and the only 3 home games in that stretch are New England, Green Bay, and Dallas!!! Not to mention the other 2 games againts SFO and Phoenix. Plus they go to Chicago and Detroit. WTF????

***************************************************************
I think everyone gets excited about someone who comes in with “The Flash” type speed. His acceleration is incredible. Still, he didn’t get drafted by 32 teams and that makes you wonder where the “possible” flaw is. Brent Grimes is a perfect example of drive and determination, I saw that at his rookie camp, nobody worked harder. He still didn’t make the 53 then but “How do you like me now?”.

You said “If he can stay healthy”, is this the reason Pearcy wasn’t drafted, injury prone?

Weems also went undrafted in 07′…….4.52/40

Hey, it’s not only early–it hasn’t even started yet. Chill guys. Snelling is very underrated. He can really look good if the offensive coordinator uses his head. It depends a lot on the growth of the offensive line and the introduction (finally) of a weapon called the screen pass used only on rare occasions under Mularky.
I predict Ovie will be a salary cap casualty if the new rookie looks good. This will free up some dollars to get a free agent road grader nose tackle (where’s Grady Jackson?).
Hopefully, Pearcy will work out as a punt returner. Forget kick returner as it’s no longer relevant in the NFL with the kicker up and no wind to fight in the dome. All Weems did last year was retrieve the ball after it sailed out of the endzone to give to the refs.
My dark horse this year is Antone Smith. He made the big mistake of fumbling in pre-season last year, but the guy has excellent speed, moves, and vision. He can definitely be a factor.
If Ray Edwards comes into camp overweight and uninspired look for the Falcons to switch to the 3-4 a lot this season with Abraham and Massaquoi the standup rush outside guys and Bierman stuck in there as an inside backer. Yes, big changes are on the horizon cuz Arthur Blank is tired of waiting for the big game.
Also, Harry Douglas isn’t really built to be the slot receiver. Look for Kerry Meier to get a lot more playing time, especially in the red zone.
Don’t count out Mike Johnson. He was injured as a rookie and totally confused by the coaches. The guy can play.
If Konz comes into camp and plays up to the hype McClure could be cut as every dollar counts in picking up a salary cap veteran for another position of need.
The only way to run a more vertical offense is with speed. It’s possible Mike Calvin and Pearcy make the roster this year.
Go Falcons

Mornin’ Led……
Nance can play, too. Hated when he left the first time. Solid depth at tb. Snelling would start for most teams……

This is the time of year when we become infatuated with UDFA’s. Everyone wants that “diamond in the rough”.

There is a reason these kids went undrafted, though….

Mr. Ledbetter, what is the status of Ray Edwards? Is he 100% healthy yet? My intuition tells me he’s going to have a banner of a year….we really need him to provide some consistent pass rush….On a side note, anybody else notice he has such a dreamy look about him?….makes me weak.

Football is in for a complete change of game if litigious society wins

May 5th, 2012
12:42 pm

D-Led, something a little off topic….Read some short lists of players added to (concussion) lawsuit against NFL. I gotta say there are probably some old timers certainly deserving of compensation. But there seems to be a lot of ex players attaching themselves to this thing to try to grab a buck.
Read today Jamaal Anderson and Lindsay Scott. How long did Lindsay play in the league? A blink of an eye before drugs got the best of him? And knee injury destroyed J.A…..
Although many players have certainly been knocked in the head a few times, I would think a big part, specifically addressing concussions, would be what was the medical knowledge of the time period concerning those issues. Remember societies thought the world was flat at one time and as time passed and knowledge grew, only then things could change.
Newer players probably have less of an argument as the league IS addressing concussions as medical information grows. They certainly want to protect their million dollar babies.
The older players that didn’t make much money and were always fearful of losing their job, probably kept playing with injury or without question when coaches told them to get back in the game. Although, that doesn’t mean coaches and staff knew way back then that this was potentially deadly to the player.
And where does player responsibility come in for basically knowing what they’re getting into? The player loves the game and chooses to play.
Back to one of my initial concerns is the list of players adding themselves to scam money. (For instance, If they become forgetful in retirement, then it must be because of head injury in football instead of getting older. Therefore they feel the NFL owes them money).
The original list was already long enough to make the players points in court and public opinion.
I do hope the ex players that are suffering do get help and compensation if proven league or team officials were negligent in their specific cases.

@Monday Morning QB: Exactly, how did the failclowns improve during this offseason? By getting the second-best available DC (Iosing out to the Saints on Spags), a few has-been players trying to make a comeback in the league, a past-his-prime CB who the Eagles practically gave away to be replaced by Boykins, and an uneventful draft? Yet the Saints grab your team leader in tackles (who wanted to play before “true fans”) along with Seattle’s, a probowl guard, the best DT in FA, and grabbed a solid WR in the draft despite only having 5 late picks…..what flavor kool-aid do you drink???

Roger Goodell, I feel like we have a lot in common. You truly know me and stand up for me…..I’d like to encounter you….would it be possible for you to give me your number so we can meet up sometime?

KEN STICKLAND – It is a very well thought out lineup. Spent two days working on it. I decided that the veterans will hold their spots until they have been beaten out. The Falcons have played rookies, but that’s because they didn’t have anything else. I don’t see Konz coming in and winning a job right away when he only benches 18 to 22. He’ll get steamrolled. Holmes is not ready to play left tackle. He’ll have to be developed. You don’t find starting left tackles in the second or third rounds. It’s Baker’s job. He has to come back as a trained killer and beat out Svitek. I put the fastest guy on the roster at returner and that’s Cody Pearcy.

So, DOL. Are you saying the OL was not upgraded???

D-Led the guy (Konz) squat over 700lbs… The push comes from comes from the legs… He has to get stronger upper body wise to help his punch but i dont see the guy getting steamrolled… Max Unger (did 22 reps) came in day 1 and started in the league.. Came in as a RG.. Now playing Center for the seahawks.. Andy Levitre (23 reps) started day 1… He is a pretty good guard

D-Led – Is Carlton Powell really still on the roster? Reason for asking: the Falcons’ team web site (which tends to be error-prone) currently lists 91 players rather than the 90 limit.

Powell ended the season on the practice squad, making him a free agent. There has been no listing of him having been resigned.

Relating to Konz- the repetitive press doesn’t indicate one’s muscular potential but rather his muscular endurance. Considering the majority of leverage and drive generated by the center position is due to lower body (which Konz is by no means deficient), is it really that important that he only has 18-22 reps? How many times a game is a smart center really going to utilize 225 lbs of upper body? I agree that he isn’t your opening day starter, but I’d be shocked if he doesn’t play a significant role in the falcons starting line this season, especially with an aged McClure.

To say “IM AM NOT A FAN OF ANY TEAM” (see, I left out the “as we speak” part just to make you feel better) on a sports blog is unique indeed. There is an old saying, If you don’t stand for something you will fall for anything. You obviously want to be heard or you would not be here. Problem is you just don’t have anything to say.

Looking through the depth chart brought one name to mind. Jason Snelling. When he played in several games (I believe in 2009) when Turner was injured, we didn’t skip a beat. The avg gain was only a fraction less and we had a much better reciever with Snelling who can also play FB. After that we let him go into FA almost without a thanks. The only way we kept him for an extremely low contract was a timing issue. No teams really needed a good RB. I don’t think we’ve given him very much respect. I hope DK will find a way to use him and Quizz more and rest Turner more. That is if we decide to keep Turner. Most agree it’s better to trade while there is a little left in the tank.
