Caught up with Falcons general manger Thomas Dimitroff at the team’s community service project on Thursday.

Here’s the blog on that.

I wanted to follow-up on his radio interview about the cornerbacks and he elaborated on the plan. He said Dunta Robinson, Brent Grimes and Asante Samuel will all get some action inside.

“Dunta has played inside at Houston and has a desire to play inside as well and that’s positive,” Dimitroff said. “He did a nice job down there. When he came to us, he’s been outside-only as you know. I understand that he’s looking forward to jumping back inside and spending some time in there as well. There is a good chance that all of those guys will be spending time inside and out.”

The theme of the training camp will be “open competition.”

“They’ll be competing for their positions and where they’ll be playing,” Dimitroff said. “Like Mike Smith has said, this is a very, very competitive year at a number of positions. We are excited about having Asante on board to improve the talent in our secondary.”

He was excited about watching the new rookies, drafted and undrafted, next Friday through Sunday at the rookie minicamp.

He had a group assessment to share about the undrafted players.

“Interestingly enough, as a group, it seems like at virtually every position grouping there are guys that are going to be very interesting to monitor through the process,” Dimitroff said.

We likely will not get the team’s first “unofficial” depth chart until late July. However, that will not keep us from stacking our own unofficial depth chart.

The Falcons have filled their roster at 90 players, the maximum number allowed by league rules.

D. ORLANDO LEDBETTER-I understand where you’re coming from, but if you’re going to base Konz’ chances of starting, with the possibility of him getting pushed around, on his bench press numbers, then you have to question the strength of Hawley, Svitek, Reynolds and McClure considering how they got pushed around last yr.

***************************************************************
I think everyone gets excited about someone who comes in with “The Flash” type speed. His acceleration is incredible. Still, he didn’t get drafted by 32 teams and that makes you wonder where the “possible” flaw is. Brent Grimes is a perfect example of drive and determination, I saw that at his rookie camp, nobody worked harder. He still didn’t make the 53 then but “How do you like me now?”.

You said “If he can stay healthy”, is this the reason Pearcy wasn’t drafted, injury prone?

Weems also went undrafted in 07′…….4.52/40

Hey, it’s not only early–it hasn’t even started yet. Chill guys. Snelling is very underrated. He can really look good if the offensive coordinator uses his head. It depends a lot on the growth of the offensive line and the introduction (finally) of a weapon called the screen pass used only on rare occasions under Mularky.
I predict Ovie will be a salary cap casualty if the new rookie looks good. This will free up some dollars to get a free agent road grader nose tackle (where’s Grady Jackson?).
Hopefully, Pearcy will work out as a punt returner. Forget kick returner as it’s no longer relevant in the NFL with the kicker up and no wind to fight in the dome. All Weems did last year was retrieve the ball after it sailed out of the endzone to give to the refs.
My dark horse this year is Antone Smith. He made the big mistake of fumbling in pre-season last year, but the guy has excellent speed, moves, and vision. He can definitely be a factor.
If Ray Edwards comes into camp overweight and uninspired look for the Falcons to switch to the 3-4 a lot this season with Abraham and Massaquoi the standup rush outside guys and Bierman stuck in there as an inside backer. Yes, big changes are on the horizon cuz Arthur Blank is tired of waiting for the big game.
Also, Harry Douglas isn’t really built to be the slot receiver. Look for Kerry Meier to get a lot more playing time, especially in the red zone.
Don’t count out Mike Johnson. He was injured as a rookie and totally confused by the coaches. The guy can play.
If Konz comes into camp and plays up to the hype McClure could be cut as every dollar counts in picking up a salary cap veteran for another position of need.
The only way to run a more vertical offense is with speed. It’s possible Mike Calvin and Pearcy make the roster this year.
Go Falcons

Mornin’ Led……
Nance can play, too. Hated when he left the first time. Solid depth at tb. Snelling would start for most teams……

This is the time of year when we become infatuated with UDFA’s. Everyone wants that “diamond in the rough”.

There is a reason these kids went undrafted, though….

example: The KR who runs a 4.2, but has chronic narcolepsy…………..just sayin

Mr. Ledbetter, what is the status of Ray Edwards? Is he 100% healthy yet? My intuition tells me he’s going to have a banner of a year….we really need him to provide some consistent pass rush….On a side note, anybody else notice he has such a dreamy look about him?….makes me weak.

Football is in for a complete change of game if litigious society wins

D-Led, something a little off topic….Read some short lists of players added to (concussion) lawsuit against NFL. I gotta say there are probably some old timers certainly deserving of compensation. But there seems to be a lot of ex players attaching themselves to this thing to try to grab a buck.
Read today Jamaal Anderson and Lindsay Scott. How long did Lindsay play in the league? A blink of an eye before drugs got the best of him? And knee injury destroyed J.A…..
Although many players have certainly been knocked in the head a few times, I would think a big part, specifically addressing concussions, would be what was the medical knowledge of the time period concerning those issues. Remember societies thought the world was flat at one time and as time passed and knowledge grew, only then things could change.
Newer players probably have less of an argument as the league IS addressing concussions as medical information grows. They certainly want to protect their million dollar babies.
The older players that didn’t make much money and were always fearful of losing their job, probably kept playing with injury or without question when coaches told them to get back in the game. Although, that doesn’t mean coaches and staff knew way back then that this was potentially deadly to the player.
And where does player responsibility come in for basically knowing what they’re getting into? The player loves the game and chooses to play.
Back to one of my initial concerns is the list of players adding themselves to scam money. (For instance, If they become forgetful in retirement, then it must be because of head injury in football instead of getting older. Therefore they feel the NFL owes them money).
The original list was already long enough to make the players points in court and public opinion.
I do hope the ex players that are suffering do get help and compensation if proven league or team officials were negligent in their specific cases.

Don’t look now but every team in the south improved this off season except the Aints. You have no coach, no contract for your QB, no defense and no class. This will equal no playoffs.

@Monday Morning QB: Exactly, how did the failclowns improve during this offseason? By getting the second-best available DC (Iosing out to the Saints on Spags), a few has-been players trying to make a comeback in the league, a past-his-prime CB who the Eagles practically gave away to be replaced by Boykins, and an uneventful draft? Yet the Saints grab your team leader in tackles (who wanted to play before “true fans”) along with Seattle’s, a probowl guard, the best DT in FA, and grabbed a solid WR in the draft despite only having 5 late picks…..what flavor kool-aid do you drink???
