Caught up with Falcons general manger Thomas Dimitroff at the team’s community service project on Thursday.
I wanted to follow-up on his radio interview about the cornerbacks and he elaborated on the plan. He said Dunta Robinson, Brent Grimes and Asante Samuel will all get some action inside.
“Dunta has played inside at Houston and has a desire to play inside as well and that’s positive,” Dimitroff said. “He did a nice job down there. When he came to us, he’s been outside-only as you know. I understand that he’s looking forward to jumping back inside and spending some time in there as well. There is a good chance that all of those guys will be spending time inside and out.”
The theme of the training camp will be “open competition.”
“They’ll be competing for their positions and where they’ll be playing,” Dimitroff said. “Like Mike Smith has said, this is a very, very competitive year at a number of positions. We are excited about having Asante on board to improve the talent in our secondary.”
He was excited about watching the new rookies, drafted and undrafted, next Friday through Sunday at the rookie minicamp.
He had a group assessment to share about the undrafted players.
“Interestingly enough, as a group, it seems like at virtually every position grouping there are guys that are going to be very interesting to monitor through the process,” Dimitroff said.
We likely will not get the team’s first “unofficial” depth chart until late July. However, that will not keep us from stacking our own unofficial depth chart.

Formul8or — Ummm, Sam was injured last year. Did you miss the part about back surgery. If he comes back healthy and starts believing that he’s a trained killer over there, he’ll be your starter. If not, Svitek will beat him out. You can’t count on a third round rookie to start.

What do you know about this kid. NFL Draftscouts has the following:
6′4” 252 lbs. 4.6 forty, 41.5” vertical? 41.5” VERTICAL
Sounds like a beast physically. Line him up at TE if nothing else and let him outjump everyone. Or how about blocking kicks on special teams.

Lft Coast Dawg…….I would love to see Calvin win a job. I just don’t think he is a NFL receiver at this point. Should be an interesting to see if he can return punts or KO’s. With his speed there is some reason he went undrafted!

Don’t put too much stock in this guys – it isn’t from the team, and it’s before offseason training. Check back in, mid-August to see who’s moving up.
@chc4 – how can you call Mike Johnson a bust, based on this? I think we’re all forgetting about him, and we shouldn’t. He was the favorite to win the RG battle last year, before he got hurt. You can’t call a guy a bust for getting hurt one year – everybody gets hurt. Between Johnson, Manuwai, and Konz, we’ve added a lot of competition at the G spot… should be fun to watch!

@Paddy – I believe his health history was more of the reason he didn’t get drafted. I really think the Falcons found a diamond in the rough. If Jesse Holley can make the Cowboys squad from a reality TV show, Calvin definitely has a shot to come in as a 5th or 6th receive option, practice squad at the worst.

Lately I have been reading a lot of comments saying that the Falcons chances of winning the division are much improved because of the turmoil in N.O. Please don’t fall into that trap. The strength of the Saint’s team is their offense. The defense never was that great to begin with, so I doubt the suspensions will make that much of a difference.
The Falcons need to get better, period. They have new O and D coordinators that will be implementing new schemes and packages. This may cause a slow start record wise, but my hope is that as the season goes along, it will all come together and the Falcons will start to play their best ball going into the playoffs.

Love that they got Rogers (the other Rogers). Watched both of them at OSU and was hoping one of the two would get here in ATL. Wow, both!! My biggest concern is the schedule. Look at the last 10 games starting with Philly on the road. If we don’t get out to a good start against the AFC, this season will be almost impossible to finish strong. Every one of the 10 teams will be in wild card contention or will impact the wild card.

Can someone please tell me how they come up with these schedules? My other team is Seattle. They only went 7-9 and didn’t make the playoffs, but they play 5 or their first 8 on the road and the only 3 home games in that stretch are New England, Green Bay, and Dallas!!! Not to mention the other 2 games againts SFO and Phoenix. Plus they go to Chicago and Detroit. WTF????

So, where’s the win in this: Baker’s play was awful “because he was injured”…but he’s injured more often than not…so his play will continue to be awful more often than not…because, as he showed in college, he’s injury prone. How would giving him the nod at starter help us again?

welikebaseball2 — Not really sure. But Coach Mike Smith has defended him at every turn this offseason. It’s VERY CLEAR that it’s Baker’s job to lose. He had strong 2009 and 2010 campaigns. They are clearly hoping to see that player.
