California wide receiver Michael Calvin, an undrafted rookie free agent, signed with the Falcons today.

The Falcons have now signed 23 free agents from the draft-eligible class.

Calvin, 6-foot-2, 210 pounds, fits the Falcons desire to take players with “speed and urgency.”

He ran a 4.32 in the 40-yard dash at Cal’s 2012 Pro Day, which would have been the fastest time at the NFL scouting combine. He had a broad jump of 11 feet, 1 inch and a vertical of 40.5 inches, which would have tied for the best and tied for the fourth-best marks at the combine, respectively.

(I’m thinking there’s a pretty hot 4 X 100 relay team in the wide receiver meeting room. Here it is: Calvin (4.32), Cody Pearcy (4.3 to .35), Julio Jones (4.39) and Harry Douglas (4.42). The Olympics are this summer, you know. Rule number one for the relay team: CLEAN EXCHANGES AND DON’T DROP THE BATON!!!)

Calvin played in 37 games for the Golden Bears and made 10 starts. He had 42 catches for 528 yards and one touchdown over his career.

Based on the picture I just saw on a quick internet search (he is catching a ball with his eyes closed and his head is not turned towards the location of the ball & he is using his arms and body to catch); he might lack the basic fundamentals required to be a consistent receiver (I really do not know for sure because I have never even heard his name).

The bio indicated he would not be drafted because he was an consistent underacheiver in college; it is amazing what $$$$$ and the prospect of being an NFL player can do to motivate……….with his speed and size………..good coaching could very well turn this cat into a SUPERB wide receiver!!!!!

I have a good feeling about Mr. Calvin’s future with the Atlanta Falcons!!!

Funny people are asking D why he wasn’t drafted. He wasn’t drafted because he only had 42 catches for 528 yards and one touchdown over his career. He may be a track guy but gotta learn to get off the line with a defender in your face, know how to run routes that get you open, and catch the ball. Sounds like he is what he is. A non-drafted FA signee that might put it all together but not worth using a pick on.

Why was he not drafted?????? No team liked him as a draft choice, very simple. Over the years there have many fast football players either watching from home or from the sidelines. Had this been ten years ago, teams would have taken a player like this high based on Combine workouts. But after countless mistakes based on measurables, teams have gone back to drafting good football players.

The fact that Michael Calvin’s best year in college was his 20 catch 263 yard senior year probably had something to do with him not getting drafted. Nice camp body though with his speed.

Pretty good receiver and very nice pickup. I was just reading Jonathan Daniels “Why the Atlanta Falcons Hurt Themselves In the 2012 NFL Draft”. I got sick to my stomach reading it, because I think that they did an excellent job getting some refer to as (BIG UGLIES). TD and Mike Smith did what they had to do with those limited picks(6). One was received through a swap picks. He addressed that the Falcons need one of these hybrid TE’s for a possible replacement for TG(88). They probably would have but all the good ones were off the board when they had a slight opportunity. The Colts took the top 2 TE’s and that moved all the rest up in the draft. I think his article is back firing on him, because he have a voting scale and everyone seems to rank it as an A or B. You cannot get hybrid or skill players in every draft. Thanks DOL for keeping it REAL. Great job on this kid, because he will be another headache for the Bucs, Panthers and the Saints.

Orson Charles, Brandon Thompson, etc. even undrafted rookies are not all that impressive. If the Birds don’t go far in thr PLAYOFFS this year it could be club death. Tony G. and McClure will retire, Turner, ABE and others are on their last go. It has to be this year!!!!! Maybe TD will pick up some people from the last cuts. For the life of me IK don’t understand why more emphasis wasn’t put on TE and DE. TD should try the DAWGS TE Aron White and GT C. Peters. It doesn’t look good! Undrafted FA’s that run in the 4.3s give you two things . I can’t see much to fault in Ward’s analysis in “Why the Atlanta Falcons Hurt Themselves In the 2012 NFL Draft.” With the exception of Spoon, our LBs were stiff and slow in pass coverage, and especially in the flat. Lofton seemed stout against the run, but he’s gone now. His replacement is a question mark. The LBs were just average on the relatively rare occasions when they blitzed, and against the better O-lines (e.g., the Saints, Texans, Bears, Giants, and especially the Packers) their blitzes were easily picked up. We all know about the D-line’s problems pressuring the QB against the better teams. I don’t really see how we made ourselves better this year on defense except that Samuel, who will no doubt replace Dunte at right corner, is an upgrade. I don’t see TD building a dominating defense here at all. And the O-line and TE position are real question marks. TG is smart, and reliable catching the short pass, but since he’s not quick, nor a down-field threat, by the standards of today’s better TEs he’s just an average TE. The main point is: most teams have gotten better (most notably Tampa Bay and Carolina in our own division), so relatively speaking, I see us sliding a bit.

Our over all talent level is dropping dramatically and this year will prove how poorly Dimitroff has been drafting good players. Most of his so called draftees will be starters this year. I may not make his salary but I guarantee you that most of us college football fans could out draft him. His drafts always leave you scratching your head and asking why on earth did he draft so and so. Konz was a good pick but from there he over reached for everyone else. There were several solid players on the board when he picked Holmes. DT Thompson from Clemson, Orson Charles UGA, and Bobbie Massie Mississippi, and Brandon Boykin UGA. His 1st draft with the falcons was pretty good but since ,WOW pretty bad.

TD and Smitty drafted each pick for “need” and did a great job with the picks they had. It’s obvious every pick was carefully plotted and it was no surprise every one of them is noted to be of high character and loves football.
As far as the free agent Calvin one thing in the NFL or any other league you can’t teach is SPEED. Some of you older fans might remember a guy Dallas drafted by the name of Bob Hayes. When he came into the league he couldn’t catch a cold, but a cold couldn’t catch up to him either. He learned how to catch a football and the rest is history. If Calvin can be coached he can be an enormous weapon to stretch the field–exactly what Jones and White need.
Even their seventh round pick, a defensive tackle is a nose tackle, something they desperately need. All in all I think they grade out as an “A”. If Kiper was so perfect how did he miss out on Victor Cruz last year?
Keep up the good work.

With Calvin’s size and speed, why not train him at nickel back if there’s a WR problem? Someone with that size and speed should be on the field in the nfl. He should be able to blanket any of the tall slot receivers as the nickel back with that speed and height.

I believe this season success will in part hinge on whether Matt Ryan and Michael Turner used the off season to work out with personal trainers. Matt needed to add more body weight and strength especially back and shoulders. Michael needed to lose about 20 lbs or more off the back bumper to get a step quicker. Also, the OL looked weak last year getting beat by quickness or pushed back by bull rushes most of the year. Maybe a strength coach change is what is needed to improve the OL play.

Bad Drafting = Losing…. where should I start? in case you haven’t been keeping up with current events, the falcons have had 4 winning seasons in a row, so that more or less shoots down your theory. sure, they haven’t gotten the results they wanted in the playoffs but nobody else beat the the teams they lost to either.. they will break out of that eventually. they are LOADED on offense and the D will be improved this year.

Why him? He’s a rocket scientist, and can outrun a noodle arm

TD did address the pass rush by signing that CB from eagles. U know the Samuel guy?? Lol if we can cover better then we have more time to get the QB. Obviously there were no. Impact D lineman available. Great job TD playing the card u were dealt

Sounds like a find…why wasn’t he drafted?

Our receivers need to be fast if the offensive line plays as poorly as it did last year.

To all you fans still doubting the FO…..Folks, Its called doing your “due diligence”. Anyone with 4.3 speed deserves a look under “your” scheme/system. Not like they’re giving him millions of dollars! Good Grief!!!!

someone to be excited about is jerrel harris out of BAMA…he’s a quiet leader who knows how to motivate teammates as well as perform on the field…he’s not a big name like Dont’a or Courtney, but he did his job and did it well in Tuscaloosa…

Caleb King released by Minnesota Vikings following arrest.

Caleb, you need to chill man, you do look like Eddie Murphy.

Saw Cal play many times over the past few seasons, and I honestly can’t remember this guy at all……know he wasn’t a starter.

Cal has had big problems at the QB position, however, so maybe he’ll be the proverbial “diamond in the rough”……can’t teach speed…

If Al Davis was alive he’d have signed this bloke in the 1st round

Calvin was not drafted because he had trouble staying healthy–that’s why his production was down. He was supposed to be a starter his freshmen year (and be a stud too).

If he can stay healthy (BIG IF), he could be a beast.

There is an opening on the roster for a Kick Return and Punt Return Man. Should be an interesting training camp to see who gets the job.
