FLOWERY BRANCH –  Offensive tackle Lamar Holmes, the Falcons third round pick from Southern Mississippi, took part in a conference call with local media late Friday night shortly after being selected.

Here’s what he had to say:

On being drafted: It was like the world’s best feeling. It’s something you have dreamed since the day you could pick up a football or say the word football. It’s something that you’ve dreamed about your entire life. To have the coach call you and tell you you’re part of the Atlanta Falcons now, it’s something that you can’t even put in words. It feels great. I’m ready to go.

On his career at Southern Miss after transferring from Itawamba Community College: I went to junior college when I was a freshman with my head down, just basically saying, ‘I’ve got to go in there and take somebody’s spot. I’ve got to earn a job. I’ve got to be on the field. I’m not here to make friends.’ I think that type of mentality, it carried me to where I am now. I went to Southern Miss with just the same mentality and I’ve just got to keep doing it.

On his major at Southern Miss: My major at Southern Miss was sports coaching with a minor in business management.

On his leadership skills: It was great for me being a captain by my teammates voting for me to be a team captain. Coming from junior college, they didn’t really have to do that. They didn’t really know me, but they voted me as team captain, I guess because they saw that I worked hard every day. Everything I did, if I had to get extra work in, I’d go in there and get it on my own. I guess that’s what inspired them, voting me as a team captain, which I’m glad they did.

On the highlight of his career at Southern Miss: The highlight of my career was when we beat Houston for the Conference USA championship. But other than that, it would have to be against UCF. We ran a two-point conversion play and I got to run the two-point conversion in. I was a tackle [eligible.] I just dropped behind the cornerback. When he threw it to me, I was wide open. I just basically walked in.

On competing for a starting job: I feel like I can come in there and be a contributor from day one, because I’m going to work and whoever’s across from me, I’m going to make them work hard every day, all day.

On if he can play left tackle: Yes. At junior college, I played right tackle and some left tackle. At Southern Miss, it was strictly left tackle.

I hope he can cut it! I trust TD even though I know most on here don’t! He honestly seems like a project to groom this year with the intent that he’s be ready to potentially take over for Baker next year if Baker doesn’t step up & get his act together this year.
I’m kind of hoping that they can still get one of three players in the remaining rounds: O. Charles, B. Thompson, or J. Chapman, (we could use a NT).

I like the way we are beefing up the OL…….We really need a pure pass rusher but I would also like to see us get Green or Charles to replace Tony. My personal feeling is that if Green is still there in Rd 5, he is gone. But, I don’t think there is any way he or Charles will be available.

The trade for Samuel really makes this draft look better. Good Job TD!!

He sounds like he has more heart and commitment than Baker. Last year, Baker looked as though he did not want to be out there. I know Baker has had some injuries, but he looked lost.

I checked this guy out a few times during this past season. He is really good. I think he will start from day 1.

This sounds like the attitude we need from a lineman. I like what I hear. Wish this young man the best with the Falcons. See y’all in section 301

Fans and management put too much emphasis on the school pedigree. It’s not the school that makes the player a player. Sam Baker, Mike Johnson and Garrett Reynolds all came from big time programs and we see how thats worked out. The greatest reciever of all time was selected out of Mississipi Valley State.

LOVE LOVE LOVE going BIG OL with first two picks.

I heard several people say Massey would be a better pick but he continues to drop so there must something ALL the other teams have seen that make them not like him.

Good luck Lamar!

I agree nique and t_height. Also glad to see at least one area where people are being possitive, i mean its draft day, a time for optimism, not doubt and hate. Its not like were jacksonville. Hoping to see a feb parade on peachtree

Only time will tell. I hope TD has made the right choices. He has had a problem with taking players that would have been available in a later round. I also think if we have trouble on the OL after giving them our 2nd & 3rd plus Johnson & Hawley in recent drafts and resigning Blalock and Clabo we need to question TD’s ability. In all fairness, he has made some good choices.

Hat least 8 higher rated OTs available when we picked Holmes. I hope they know what they are doing.

I like Hanna, TE from OU, in the 5th. Dude has the measurables, did not get much chance at OU.

I don’t know anything about Massie but it makes me wonder if he has some baggage. Remember TD was brought in after Vick, and I have to think AB’s instructions were let’s get guys with good character as well as good players.

Welcome to the Falcons you BIG, UGLY, BEAUTIFUL MANLEY MAN!!! Hope your career is long and spent punishing many different D—linemen and L.B.s in the future. Now, go out and prove to everyone that you’re not just a pretty face, but in fact you are a bad attitude, looking for a place to happen…

Falcons picks from Southern Miss don’t usually pan out for the Falcons.

DLed, maybe you can pull up the history on those picks.

I’d let this kid fight for LT job with Svitek. Then draft that FB out of Wisconsin with first 5th Round pick. Cut Ovie Mughelli & Baker to free up salary cap space, trade their 2nd 5th round to IND for Dwight Freeney using the money saved to sign him. Then move Edwards to DT.

I hope that Holmes is as good as he thinks he is. Hey, U have to like the attitude but it was still a reach.

Dimitroff did not get good value in this draft, but its up to the players to prove the draft experts wrong.

Who knows if Baker can pass the physical anymore, given his history. No way U cound on Baker or Jerry now.

Guess you are talking about next yrs 2 and 5th for Freeney.

I am not that knowledgable about the cap, but if the $$$$$ can be worked on, I would like to see Freeney and start by offering the Colts a 4th and 5th. Want to keep the first 3 rounds.

Nice draft. I like NFL managements’ idea to let some old retired players announce the picks for their teams’, See! they don’t drool and they are coherent. What concussion nonsense?
TD seems to always want to reach a little. Go against the consensus of almost everyone else and prove he’s smarter and can find that “diamond in the rough”, We know how that’s working for him, huh? More picks with injury historys and this OT is a deep reach. Just one draft I would like to see us make the smart picks. We’ll see how it works out, I hope for the best.

The more I think of the Holmes pick the angrier I get and its not his fault its that we have a GM who has no clue to what he is doing.

This is the same bum who has gotten us the likes of Periea Jerry, Sam Baker and William Moore.

What is he trying to do, put a sports medicine research facitlty or a super bowl winnig team.

This is a disgrace.

I realize that Dimitroff is the team leader during the draft, but he simply doesn’t sit in a sound proof booth and make these decisions alone. He would have heavy input from both new co-ordinators and all of the position coaches as well as Mike Smith. They would be scouting for the person has the specific skills who will best fit the new schemes they are going to put in to place no matter what the relative rankings of the players. Since none of us knows what these new schemes look like, it may be time for a little faith in the Falcon brain trust and a little less “I know it all” arrogance.

think smitty and td are still going off of no sacred cows theme no media darlings just good sound BIG players that the media did not even have info to comment at the time.so we will see a complete rework of the o line so we can run toss sweep pitch and screen these players can pull and attack down field no more sit and get bull rushed now we will be rushing with the big uglies hope the offense goes on the offensive so we can score points come playoff time
