LIVE CHAT: WWTDD – What will Thomas Dimitroff do?

We are in the media War Room and ready for your questions before the second day of the NFL draft starts.

FLOWERY BRANCH – Took a little time to assess the first round late last night, got a few winks, delivered a couple of lectures on the media and the justice system and then started to  ponder this WWTDD question.

Given what happened in the most bizarre first round in quite a while, we have to figure out “What Will Thomas Dimitroff Do” with the 55th and 84th picks of the draft.

The first round broke beautifully for the Falcons, who have heavily scouted offensive tackles. The Falcons can practically sit back at 55 and watch as lineman slips through. Georgia’s Cordy Glenn, Stanford’s Jonathan Martin and Mississippi State’s Bobby Massie, Ohio State’s Mike Adams  and Wisconsin’s Peter Konz were not selected in the first round. All were projected as potential first round picks.

The Falcons may target Adams or Martin if they are slipping and go up and get one of them. Dimitroff has made at least

Let's go eat a (blank, blank) snack!!! The media war room has some healthy snack options.

Let's go eat a (blank, blank) snack!!! The media war room has some healthy snack options.

one trade in each of his past four drafts.

If the Falcons lay back at 55, California tackle Mitchell Schwartz and Midwestern State tackle/guard Amini Silatolu could still be around.

During the pre-draft process the Falcons worked out offensive tackles Schwartz, Steven Baker (East Carolina), Dennis Kelly (Purdue), Kelechi Osemele (Iowa State) and Donald Stephenson (Oklahoma).

We have a few hours until things get started. So send along your questions.

do you think TD will try to move up and grab an OL named by you or will he be patient and see what falls into his lap at 55….agree round 1 played out well for the Falcons pick at 55 but some of the talent left may go quickly

With so many solid O-Linemen left, do you think TD trades down a few spots to pick up an extra pick?

Pastor Mackdaddy — Adams and Martin are both worth moving up for. Just a matter of how far they slip. If they drop into the 40s, Dimitroff may strike.

TD Mike — He has traded up four times and down just once. I don’t belive he’ll go back in this draft. It’s more likely that he’ll move up.

i love the idea of trading down, maybe getting back our 4th we gave cleveland in the process- but do we risk not landing one of the better TE’s still available Dwayne Allen (assuming Fleener reunites w/Luck in Indy)?

I’m feeling so good at this point I’m going to be happy with the pick almost no matter who it is. I’d just rather they not have played defense at Clemson University (undiciplined mess). Other than that, I’m pretty pleased with the options.

Pittsburg lucked into DeCastro. Perhaps a good player will fall to the Falcons as well.

With so much very good OL talent sliding into this round, I’d think they would be more apt to move up to snag a particular player. I really like our talent overall much better today than I did 2 weeks ago.

I’d feel better if we could add another versatile, speedy OLB and TE somewhere but I think OL is the first pick. tonight.

Dled,

I am seeing all kinds of picks for us at 2, I know we need a TE but do you think they pass on a OT or OG for a TE. Also do you think if we pass on TE we can get Green by the 3rd round. Any chance we go D-line with 2nd pick? I will hang up and listen. Keep up the outstanding work, unless the NFL network comes calling then go!

They way the first round went, there are several players that were projected to go in the first wound that did not go, so there will be some cream at number 55. Rams have 33, 39, 45 picks in 2nd. WE move up to get at least one of those imho. I wouldn’t be surprised to see us move up and get TWO of those. It’s not like we know their GM and they have loads of first round picks next year.

What’s the scoop on Silatolu from Midwestern? The Falcons OL coach is from Midwestern, and there was mention of “nastiness” in another article, but I couldn’t tell if he was referring to Silatolu or not. Also, are we going to dump Sam Baker if we get a high round OL? I really thought we would have already done so. A poster above predicted Josh Chapman lasting until the 6th, and Von Burfict until the 7th. Any way that is possible? Seems like a stretch.

This is so hard to predict because I’ve heard so many different ideas and theories. If it were me and they do trade up, I would trade up and take Cordy Glenn and get a 1st round grade lineman. If they stay at 55 I’m unsure if they go defense or OL. A name I keep hearing a lot of good things about is Derek Wolfe. I know who all we’ve heard that they have worked out but if he is there he might be a better choice than who we’ve reportedly worked out.

They have to go best available OL in the 2nd round. Someone who can compete with Same Baker at LT and possible move to the inside when called upon. Matty Ice was roughed up a bit too much last year.

Orly, Orson Charles at #55 sounds pretty good to me…if he’s there. If not, the best available OL is smart. Also, personally, I would love to see Turner traded for a #2, and use that–or a later pick–for a running back that can get to the line of scrimmage before the play clock expires. Orson Charles will be there in the 4th or 5th RD. A team that uses the H-back will draft him. He’s not an in-line TE with his lack of size nor can he stretch the seam with his lack of speed.

DOL I realize that deception is job 1 for a GM when it comes to the draft, but TD and Smitty have stated that Baker is “their guy” for at least one more yr (not sure I agree). It doesn’t make sense to move up in round 2 for a left OT if they are determined to give Baker one more year What’s your take D Led ?

D. Orlando Ledbetter

Chub Rock – Not hearing good things about Osemele. Hearing he’s a “me” guy. Rainey is a returner. Falcons need a returner. Devon Wylie ran a 4.37, so he’s plenty fast. He’s 5-9 1/4 and 188. So he’s a speedy smurf. Good punt returner, too. It is Alameda Ta’Amu. He’s a stud. Did 35 reps at the combine and weighs 344. He’s projected to go in the second or third round.

Remember that the Falcons seek O-linemene they can crosstrain, so i’d look for the smartest lineman who can play multiple positions to be drafted. They can’t be too thrilled with Sam Baker at this point, so maybe they’re looking at left tackle as the most needed. Don’t discount a defensive pick, but don’t assume it’ll be a DE. Mike Nolan is just as comnfortable using a 3-4 as a 4-3, and the Falcons’ personnel has more talent at DT, so that pick may be the best ILB/DE hybrid. Available. I beliebe that’s why the kept Kroy Bierman, because he can drop back. Whatever happens, expect to be surprised. Dimitroff doesn’t rate players as Mel Kiper does. Expect a guy maybe further down the ratings list. For example, Curtis Lofton and Harry Douglas were further down the charts as far as prospects, but TD choose wisely there.

Derek Wolfe
D Led maybe a little height want hurt. We’re not getting pressure on the quarterback now with our shorter lineman. Like I say don’t know much about him other than he has a big motor which is what we need. If the NFL network guys and Kiper are high on him then he must have abilities to play for someone. I just got this feeling about him similar to the feeling I had years ago when we passed on Clay Matthews to take Jerry. Sure wished we had Matthews now. Just knew that was going to be a mistake. Don’t want another.

Mike — They don’t have enough money for Osi, who wants a long-term deal. Also, Dwight Freeney is reportedly on the trading block. He has a big cap number, too. They are likely done with high-priced vets.

A steady WR that will go across the middle. He is a team player as well. also with a Screen game the most important ting is to CATCH the ball. I know he ran a 4.68 at the combine and he is 6′0 tall but he makes plays and moves the chains. IMO Matt Ryan would love to throw him the ball 30 times a year to him.

Uncle Rico is here to remind TD & MS [of course they read this blog] that any improvement project starts with a solid foundation e.g., offensive / defensive linemen. In their zeal to rebuild the Falcons, they forgot this axiom!

To Defense wins Championships………no, defense does not win Championships in the NFL. Great offense wins the big game. Good defense get you there. Without a great offense, no Super Bowl chances! The game as evolved. Don’t repeat what Woody Hayes said 40 yrs ago! It is not true anymore!

I trust what TD does, but I am puzzled at drafting another player with a history of injuries. I thought Mike Johnson was the answer at OG from 2 seasons ago out of Alabama. Im puzzled, but again I remember wanting Glenn Dorsey over Matt Ryan, therefore my opinions clearly don’t mean much.

I clearly wanted someone other than Ryan also… but this habit of drafting injury prone goofs, short arm left tackles, and generally not having a plan to get beyond the first round of the playoffs…I am not a fan of the drafting abilities of TD at this point

@ Tommy.. my beef is not that he was not projected well.. it is he is an injury prone weakling by NFL guard standards.. (18 reps is weak(… Mclure is gone next year.. @Joe T:) The Falcons lost in the 2nd Round of the playoffs 1 year ago, just like the Hawks lost in the 2nd Round last year. Mike Vick won a pair of Playoff games here, would you rather have the Dog Killer come back? I love Mike Vick, but with him we were not a consistent playoff competitor. Therefore, we had less chance of winning the Super Bowl. Right?

The Hawks haven’t done jack since Dominique. Win a first round playoff series? That’s how you define success? In the NBA? 16 teams make the playoffs!!!!!

UGA fan- We have a great shot to win the SEC this year. Definitely moving in right direction but Richt has a lot of hidden forces working against him at the University.

Braves fan- Wren has truly done a fine job. Our pitching is in transition with the youth about to take over but we have a solid mix right now. Huddy comes back and gonna be very solid. Wish we had 1 more bat.

Falcons fan- Birds on the cusp of something big. Ryan is still a toddler in his growth, Julio is a star ready to break out, we still need a RB. Dimitroff has turned a moribund franchise into a consistent winner.

Tereshinski it is. I too am a lifetime dawg. However, no NC until the next HC, I’m afraid. The powers that be in Athens show no sign of being interested in excellence. They seem happy with being an NFL farm team, rather than going for the Big Prize. ‘If we push our boys too hard, they may get hurt and ruin their chances of being drafted.’ Every home game half time is highlighted by the parade of names on the big board who are now in the NFL. Jaguars selected California P Bryan Anger with the No. 70 overall pick in the 2012 draft.
A touching tribute to the late Al Davis. The first and only punter to come off the board in 2011 was Atlanta’s Matt Bosher at No. 192. Anger is at least a very good punter, boasting one of the NCAA’s strongest legs last season while routinely pinning teams inside the 20. Regardless, it’s a baffling pick from increasingly unpredictable Jaguars GM Gene Smith.

What’s his winning percentage against teams with a winning percentage? I know we can take Coastal Carolina Day Academy .He certainly knows how to pad a schedule. Unfortunately, there is always a real contender on there somewhere. Same results every time. We seldom (if ever) beat the teams that you have to beat to be a top tier team. Big flaw. Also, we all knows he is capable, but only rises to the occasion when he’s on the hot seat, pansy scheduling notwithstanding. Another big flaw. He know longer has the fire in his belly. He is a good man, don’t get me wrong. But if you can’t win with Stafford and Moreno, and that tremendous supporting cast that they had, then the flaws are astronomical. You don’t have to be a Magi to recognize that. Ray Charles could see that red light.

The team in 2008 with Staff/Moreno? Toughest schedule in the nation and that’s why many pundits did not pick Georgia to win it all.

The reason why we didn’t do better in 2008 and thereafter would be Willie Martinez. The worst DC in many, many years in the SEC.

One more time…we didn’t win with Staff and Moreno not ’cause of the offense but the defense.

Who cares about a 5th rounder, just make the pick. Its not like 5th rounders are going to do anything anyway. Maybe make special teams.

How about that dumb pick that Belicheck made with number 48, Tavon Wilson, a projected 6th or 7th rounder. This is one time the genius outsmarted himself. Gosh, one thing Belicheck does not do well is draft in the second round. Look how they passed on Clay Matthews.

I am a Pats/Falcons fans and thank goodness for Pats fans that Tom Brady covers up for a multitude of draft sins that Belickeck has made in the past. The list in the second round (Terrence Wheatley, Darius Butler, Bethel Johnson, and first round bust Andy Katzenmoyer) shows that the Pats often do not draft well, Many mistakes in the draft, amazing the success they have given picks they made tonight.

The Tavon Wilson pick is the WORST in NFL history. Dumb.

Joe T: Let’s see…Stafford led the team to a final ranking of #2 in the nation and then the 2008 team had a sieve-like defense. Staff was NEVER the problem.

In several of these SEC towns such as Knoxville, Tuscaloosa, Auburn….the University and the law enforcement work hand in hand. Remember Bar Knoxville? Brutal beatdown of a cop in the middle of the street by 8+ football players and 1 guy was officially disciplined. Athens cops do not work with UGA on these things.

If you REALLY believe that Bama has none of the same problems that Georgia and many other programs have, you’re dumb as a rock. It’s how the problems are handled that differentiates the schools.

Since Auburn has a national title, I guess you feel Chizik is better than Richt? LOL And more disciplined?

And Urban Meyer…the one with more arrests than anyone but nary a game suspension for his players.

The University of Georgia has one of the toughest policies in the country on drugs. I believe Kentucky is the only SEC school that compares. Nationally, I believe Georgia is 1 of 6 schools that suspends athletes for 10% of the schedule for any alcohol arrests, 50% on the 2nd arrest.

C’mon guys. Tough on drugs, yes. The kind of discipline that wins games is what our boys lack. The largest line in all of football, pro and college, lined up against tiny players at Oregon last year, and were winded by the first half. I don’t care that we didn’t have the right conditioning coach to act as nanny and change their diapers for them. In the days before conditioning coaches, players knew to show up in shape or they would forfeit their scholarships. That’s the type of discipline that we are missing. You instill that kind of discipline, and the drug and alcohol problems will diminish without having to play nanny. If you insist on babysitting hoodlums, expect bad behavior.

The guy squat over 700lbs… So his leg strength (which helps you get push) is theire.. So i wouldnt call the guy weak… He has to improve his strength in his arms to get a better push… But if you are talking about 4th and inches…. The guy gets a good push…. Watch Wisconsin games on espn 3…

If you dont feel like watching the whole game.. Watch him vs Nebraska right here

Let’s be real people-at this point you’re looking at upside as much as productivity-there’s plenty of supposed projections that have been way off already in this draft-let’s trust that TD and Smitty have done their homework and made an educated pick!

mars- discipline is key yes!! however, majority of SEC programs turn a blind eye towards off field issues. UGA being strict as they are, is only hurting us.

DLed just posted story where he writes, “The Falcons’ plan was to improve the offensive line early in this draft. Their decision came down to Konz and Mississippi tackle Bobby Massie.”

So, why the hell didn’t TD draft Massie instead of Holmes? He had trouble deciding between Konz and Massie in the 2nd round, but passes on Massie in the 3rd! WTF?

@ATLJBO ok I watched all 5:08 of the film. I don’t know how experienced you are at watching film, but here is what I saw. First play of the film his man makes the tackle in the backfield. Third play he lets a man take a free run to the QB only to have QB cause the man to miss. On a reverse play he pulls to bl0ck a cornerback who is STANDING STILL. The guy barely and I do mean BARELY touches the CB’s ankle. One play he cuts the MLB who promptly gets up and tackles the back for a loss. EVERY Effective block I saw him make was as part of a double team. I am hoping he had better games against other people.

Speak on it K-man!!!!! I personally thought Dimitroff was scared to draft another guy from Mississippi after the Peria Jerry debacle. Only time will tell if Mr. Holmes is worth the pick used on him. Everybody else is passing on Massie too. I don’t know anymore. Hey we got 2 big O-lineman which is what we needed so we’ll see. You can make guys stronger but you can’t make’em grow. Let us pray.
