We are in the media War Room and ready for your questions before the second day of the NFL draft starts.
FLOWERY BRANCH – Took a little time to assess the first round late last night, got a few winks, delivered a couple of lectures on the media and the justice system and then started to ponder this WWTDD question.
Given what happened in the most bizarre first round in quite a while, we have to figure out “What Will Thomas Dimitroff Do” with the 55th and 84th picks of the draft.
The first round broke beautifully for the Falcons, who have heavily scouted offensive tackles. The Falcons can practically sit back at 55 and watch as lineman slips through. Georgia’s Cordy Glenn, Stanford’s Jonathan Martin and Mississippi State’s Bobby Massie, Ohio State’s Mike Adams and Wisconsin’s Peter Konz were not selected in the first round. All were projected as potential first round picks.
The Falcons may target Adams or Martin if they are slipping and go up and get one of them. Dimitroff has made at least

Let's go eat a (blank, blank) snack!!! The media war room has some healthy snack options.
one trade in each of his past four drafts.
If the Falcons lay back at 55, California tackle Mitchell Schwartz and Midwestern State tackle/guard Amini Silatolu could still be around.
During the pre-draft process the Falcons worked out offensive tackles Schwartz, Steven Baker (East Carolina), Dennis Kelly (Purdue), Kelechi Osemele (Iowa State) and Donald Stephenson (Oklahoma).
We have a few hours until things get started. So send along your questions.

Joe T- I have learned over the years not to get too high or too low with the mere drafting of a pick. I will however reserve the right to be upset after the results are in LOL. The boss does not always make decisions we agree with but at the end of the day if it doesn’t work out he or she is the one cleaning out their desk.

@ TommyP.. define mediocre.. I would say the Hawks are in that realm.. they have advanced more in the playoffs the last 3 years than either the Braves or Falcons…

As a long, long time Atlanta fan, I can remember when any talk of playoffs for any of our teams was considered fantasy and met with snickers and sneers….all across the nation! Of course, that was a time when the Dawgs were still striving for excellence, and no self respecting Dawg fan would brag about being middle of the road….some changes good, some not so good.

One more time, people. Konz was mocked to be picked by either the Packers or Ravens by just about every mock draft around.
He’s versatile in that he can play guard or center….immediately.
If you watch college football, you’ll know that Wisconsin absolutely mauls defenders in the run game better than anyone.

Fair enough Chub.. I would say TD is about 60%.. in th edraft that is pretty damn good… Konz will be my boy on his first pancake block from the RG position

Joe T: You lose my attention when you insinuate that the Hawks are better than either the Braves or Falcons franchise.
Making the playoffs in the NBA is intensely easy. It’s a joke, actually.

I have overlooked the fact that we STILL won’t have a decent LT when the season starts so it is a moot point as to how Konz plays.

@ Tommy.. my beef is not that he was not projected well.. it is he is an injury prone weakling by NFL guard standards.. (18 reps is weak(… Mclure is gone next year.. Jones from UGA is a better center prospect to replace that void… Konz may very well work out to be a stellar pick… I as a red neck from Dville believe there was better talent on the board to fill holes in our roster.. I probably am very wrong.

Tommy… not really suggesting the Hawks are better run franchise… but how do you define success… to me its wins against the big boys when it counts…the Hawks have done that better than the Braves or Falcons recently… there is no argument there… in big boy time.. the Hawks have won.. the Braves and Falcons….. not so much lately

He is the 7th rated OVERALL offensive lineman despite his “weakling” stats. I’m a huge Georgia fan and alum but Ben Jones is not close to the center prospect that this kid is.

@Joe T:) The Falcons lost in the 2nd Round of the playoffs 1 year ago, just like the Hawks lost in the 2nd Round last year. Mike Vick won a pair of Playoff games here, would you rather have the Dog Killer come back? I love Mike Vick, but with him we were not a consistent playoff competitor. Therefore, we had less chance of winning the Super Bowl. Right?

The Hawks haven’t done jack since Dominique. Win a first round playoff series? That’s how you define success? In the NBA? 16 teams make the playoffs!!!!!
The way you define success means you will always be a disappointed guy, I promise you.
The Falcons and Braves are INFINITELY more successful than the Hawks.

@Tommy, Joe T and Mars:) Joe T says he hates the Atlanta Dream (WNBA team), those girls are very, very, very pleasing to the EYES. Also, they have won in the playoffs, only losing in the WNBA Champonship series. They are very, very, very good….and pleasing to the eye.

Tommy I like winners….I am often disappointed… but not for long… as each new season dawns I am eternally renewed by the possibility of a new season. Right now the Braves have me extremely hopeful… The Flacons have made some great moves.. and well the Hawks if they get healthy may make a run… its good to be a fan …and I am a UGA fan.. and as anyone on these AJC blogs know… next year UGA will win the NC

It think Svitek is a decent LT. Given an entire off season to prepare for the position and the fact that this is a contract year, I think Svitek can do a respectable job. He’s not great clearly but he is a decent LT.

UGA fan- We have a great shot to win the SEC this year. Definitely moving in right direction but Richt has a lot of hidden forces working against him at the University.
Braves fan- Wren has truly done a fine job. Our pitching is in transition with the youth about to take over but we have a solid mix right now. Huddy comes back and gonna be very solid. Wish we had 1 more bat.
Falcons fan- Birds on the cusp of something big. Ryan is still a toddler in his growth, Julio is a star ready to break out, we still need a RB. Dimitroff has turned a moribund franchise into a consistent winner.

Tereshinski it is. I too am a lifetime dawg. However, no NC until the next HC, I’m afraid. The powers that be in Athens show no sign of being interested in excellence. They seem happy with being an NFL farm team, rather than going for the Big Prize. ‘If we push our boys too hard, they may get hurt and ruin their chances of being drafted.’ Every home game half time is highlighted by the parade of names on the big board who are now in the NFL. We should have been NC several times over by now with our talent. No one in the Athletic Dept wants that kind of pressure. Or so it seems.

Jaguars selected California P Bryan Anger with the No. 70 overall pick in the 2012 draft.
A touching tribute to the late Al Davis. The first and only punter to come off the board in 2011 was Atlanta’s Matt Bosher at No. 192. Anger is at least a very good punter, boasting one of the NCAA’s strongest legs last season while routinely pinning teams inside the 20. Regardless, it’s a baffling pick from increasingly unpredictable Jaguars GM Gene Smith.
Drafting a Punter in the 6th RD is one thing but with the 70th overall pick…Idiotic IMO.
