FLOWERY BRANCH – Before we move on to my final mock draft, I’d like to thank all of the front office folks and scouts around the league who spoke to us at the NFL combine and after, all of our draftniks out there especially Mel Kiper, Todd McShay, Mike Mayock, Charles Johnson, Gil Brandt, Bucky Brooks and Nolan Nawrocki for helping us decipher the talent in this draft class.
Yeah, I’m off the hook this year since I don’t have to project a pick for the Falcons in the first round. I have Cleveland taking Baylor wide receiver Kendall Wright with the pick they received from the Falcons.
In the second round, the Falcons will take the best linemen available. If you know who that is, go to Las Vegas right now.
If you need to prep some more for the draft, go to the DRAFT CENTRAL link. All of our position-by-position stories are Top 5 rankings available.
I saved this little story from Brian Billick for you all. I titled it, “Are you a Thug? Or are you stupid?”
Billick: “I’ve told this story a million times. I’ll tell it again.
We had a young man at the combine. We had our 60 interviews, it was late in the process and you’re tired. We have the information on these guys. I’m sitting with the kid and looking at his rap sheet and there’s nothing really serious, but enough stuff to know this guy
(had some issues.) So, I said ‘you’re tired, I’m tired let’s cut to the chase.’ Are you a thug or are you stupid? Which is it? He said, ‘Are those
my only options?’ I said, ‘well you’re not stupid.’ OK. I will tell you this kid went on played 10 years in the NFL and never had an issue.
“So the toughest thing is what are the issues. Young people tend to do stupid things. Do you have a sense he understands he has to change his behavior? Is he willing to have the people around him now change his behavior? Going forward is this an ingrained part of his character or did he just do some stupid things? If it’s the latter, you can be optimistic about the NFL and what’s at stake for him will help sort that out. If it’s an innate part of the character, that’s where you don’t want to make that mistake.”
I’m just start laughing every time I read it.
I think the moral of the story is young people do stupid things. But if they can learn from them, they can play 10 years in the NFL.
Drum roll please.

DOL,
Nice list, but I guess we have to opt for the far-flung web-based mock drafts to prognosticate the #55 pick.
I agree, best lineman available, and which ever side of the ball he is on, our 3rd round pick will be another lineman on the opposite line of scrimmage. The pressure is off picking a DB, now that Asante is in the mix.
why don’t you do a 1st round mock of NFL “sideline entertainment”?

Since you have Bobbie Massie going to the Ravens, my guess would be Mitchell Schwartz.

ATL Fan – I’m going to probably do the second round tomorrow, but I’m checking out if Amini Silatolu is going to be there or if it’s Schwartz. Down to those two guys. However, both might not be there and then I’m stomped.

I’m a Broncos fan and I’m confused by your logic with their selection. Why would they draft a TE in the 1st when they signed Jacob Tamme and Joel Dreesen in the off season and drafted 2 TE’s last year?

D. Led,
Thomas Dimitroff has always said that he wants versatility on the O-line. Amini Silatolu looks like he would fit that bill.

If Luke Kuechly is Brian Urlacher fine.
I’m sorry, I know the guys that watch tape love him but I can’t get… Sean Lee, Keith Brooking etc etc out of my head.
He’s a 7 yards down field kind of tackler in the ACC. He’s not a playmaking beast even if he’s good in coverage.
He’s not going to be THAT much better than Sean Lee or Curtis Lofton is he?
I just don’t believe the hype.

Ryan Lewis, Bethune-Cookman, Sr., 6-1, 220 – On an excellent Bethune-Cookman defense, Lewis led the way with 81 tackles last season. He’s a complete linebacker. His quickness allows him to close against the run, but he also defends well against the pass. Last season, he had 17 tackles for loss, five sacks, four interceptions for 136 yards in returns, three passes breakups, four quarterback hurries, four forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries. Now that’s versatility.

Ryan Davis, DE/OLB, Bethune-Cookman: Davis has watched his game take off the past two seasons, most recently totaling 21.5 tackles for loss and 12 sacks last season. He’s a natural pass rusher who is tough to stop off the edge, and offers the versatility to play several positions on the defensive front. The Jacksonville Jaguars and Arizona Cardinals are two teams intrigued by Davis’ talents.

I’m warming up to Amini Silatolu D-Led. Much prefer him to Schwartz. Could really bring back some nasty attitude to that unit – put the “offensive” back in our offensive line.

No way anyone should take Dontari Poe in the first round. I would love to see Bengals take DeCastro, but it is unlikely he would be there and Lewis likes guys from Georgia so Cordy Glenn is a more likely choice though they will probably go CB/S/DL

D-Led – I have seen him ranked all over the place so nothing would surprise me with Silatolu. Some draft analysts rate him higher than Zeitler and going in the first round, while others think the small-school factor and some other question marks will see him go much later than the Falcons #55 pick. I know there’s a lot of good guards in this draft but am finding it hard to believe so many will go in the first round, with all the other needs teams have. Will be interesting.

4 days of this? What a colossal waste of time…
Barely, could find time on a Sat/Sun now T/F/S/S?…really???
Clearly, desperate to maximize programming for the network…
But they’ve diminished/diluted the product/audience…
Rather than watch live, just catch up on internet, ESPN, etc…
