Mock Draft 1.0: Falcons to select Cal’s Schwartz

With the draft quickly approaching, I thought that I’d better unveil my 2012 NFL Mock Draft 1.0.
A couple of things to keep in mind, the draft is deep at wide receiver, the running backs will slide and you’ll have bunch of hybrid defensive end/linebackers. Alabama, the reigning national champs, will likely have five players selected in the first round.
Georgia offensive tackle Cordy Glenn and Georgia Tech wide receiver Stephen Hill have been invited to New York and won’t be in the green room long.
We have the Cleveland Browns selecting tight end Coby Fleener with the 22nd pick they received from the Falcons in the Julio Jones trade.
Also, we are projecting the Falcons to select California offensive tackle Mitchell Schwartz with the 55 pick overall in the second round.
Apparently, this is the year to find a wide receiver. There are plenty of receivers after Oklahoma State’s Justin Blackmon, Notre Dame’s Michael Floyd, Hill, Baylor’s Kendall Wright and LSU’s Rueben Randle.
Cal's Mitchell Schwartz (6-5 1/2, 320 pounds) could be headed to the ATL.
South Carolina’s Alshon Jeffery, Illinois A.J. Jenkins and Rutgers’ Mohamed Sanu are also highly regarded.
Once you get past the top tier, ESPN draft analyst Mel Kiper likes Appalachian State’s Brian Quick and Wisconsin’s Nick Toon.
“If you want a slot guy in the third round or fourth round select (T.Y.) Hilton out of Florida International,” Kiper said. “If you want a second round big receiver, (a team) can take Marvin McNutt out of the University of Iowa. A mid-round guy is Danny Cole out of Virginia Tech.”
Kiper has Liberty’s Chris Summers and South Dakota State’s Dale Moss on his late-round sleeper list.
Kiper and Todd McShay, also an ESPN draft analyst, actually concur on a key point about the receivers.
“There is a lot of depth in this class,” McShay said.
Here’s a look at Mock 1.0:
1. Indianapolis: Andrew Luck, QB, Stanford: “I think Andrew Luck is the most dynamic quarterbacking talent to come out since John Elway, as a prospect,” said former NFL head coach Brian Billick.

2. Washington: Robert Griffin III, QB, Baylor: The Heisman winner can run, but looks to pass first.
3. Minnesota: Matt Kalil, LT, Southern California: His older brother , Ryan, is the Pro Bowl center for the Carolina Panthers.
4. Cleveland: Trent Richardson, RB, Alabama: The Browns need to provide quarterback Colt McCoy with a major weapon.
5. Tampa Bay: Morris Claiborne, CB, LSU: The Bucs need help in the secondary.
6. St. Louis: Justin Blackmon, WR, Oklahoma State: He’s a play-maker that the Rams lack.
7. Jacksonville: Melvin Ingram, DE, South Carolina: Jags take the best player available. They can get receiver help later because the draft is deep at that position.

8. Miami: Ryan Tannehill, QB, Texas A&M:
He will be reunited with his college head coach Mike Sherman, Miami’s new offensive coordinator.
9. Carolina: Fletcher Cox, DT, Mississippi State: The Panthers have to fortify the middle of their defense.
10. Buffalo: Michael Floyd, WR, Notre Dame: After addressing defense in free agency, coach Chan Gailey gets some help for the offense.
11. Kansas City: Riley Reiff, LT, Iowa: He’s the second best tackle in the draft.
12. Seattle: Quinton Coples, DE, North Carolina: He could develop into a Pro Bowler.
13. Arizona: Cordy Glenn, LT, Georgia: Scouts have fallen in love with how he battle back from a rough start last season.
14. Dallas: Mark Barron, S, Alabama: The secondary must be addressed.
15. Philadelphia: Michael Brockers, DT, LSU: They have to put some beef in the middle of the wide-tackle-nine defense.
16. New York: Courtney Upshaw, OLB, Alabama: “I think his stock has dropped a little bit after the combine,” ESPN draft analyst Mel Kiper said.
17. Cincinnati: Dont’a Hightower, ILB, Alabama: “The improvement since he’s a couple of years removed from the knee injury in terms of big plays was monumental,” Kiper said.
18. San Diego: David DeCastro, OG, Stanford: He’s the top rated guard in the draft ahead of Wisconsin’s Kevin Zeitler.
19. Chicago: Stephon Gilmore, CB, South Carolina: He is a scheme-fit for Coach Lovie Smith’s cover-two zone.
20. Tennessee: Dre Kirkpatrick, CB, Alabama: “Dre Kirkpatrick, I know some teams are concerned about it’s not character baggage as much as the personality and is he going to fit. Obviously, he has short arms and not great ball skills. I could see him dropping a little bit out of the top 20, maybe. But I still think he’s a first round pick,” ESPN draft analyst Todd McShay said.
21. Cincinnati: Janoris Jenkins, CB, North Alabama: The Bengals have not

been to take on players with character issues.
22. Cleveland: Coby Fleener, TE, Stanford: The Browns get a security blanket for Colt McCoy.
23. Detroit: Jonathan Martin, OT, Stanford: The Lions know they have to upgrade Matthew Stafford’s protection.
24. Pittsburgh: Mike Adams, OT, Ohio State: The Steelers have a strong locker room and can ignore some of the red flags.
25. Denver: Jerel Worthy, DT, Michigan State: The Broncos need to fortify their run defense.
26. Houston: Kendall Wright, WR, Baylor: He was highly productive in the Bears’ spread offense.
27. New England: Stephen Hill, WR, Georgia Tech: The former Miller Grove star lands in a good spot.
28. Green Bay: Chandler Jones, DE, Syracuse: The Packers ignore his lack of production and figure they can get something out of his talent.
29. Baltimore: Peter Konz, C, Wisconsin: He’s massive at 6-foot-5, 314-pounds.
30. San Francisco: Shea McClellin, DE, Boise State: He has started three years at DE for the Broncos. Could project to LB in the 3-4.
31. New England: Harrison Smith, S, Notre Dame: The Pats want to improve their defense.
32. New York Giants: Orson Charles, TE, Georgia: Charles goes to a team that needs help at the position.

Schwartz looks best on the field. His underwear Olympics numbers are pretty ordinary. Good kid, Academic All American, and his mamma’s proud of him. That sort of stuff earns you the coveted Thomas Dimitroff seal of approval. By the way, it seems the kids Jewish. You don’t suppose that would bother Arthur do you? I raises an interesting question though, I’d always heard that it was scientifically impossible to produce football players on a bacon free diet. There must have been some kind of technological break through. Anyway I missed the memo on that one.
Mr. Schwartz wouldn’t be my first choice, but we could do a lot worse.

birddroppings……….seeing how dfficult it is to be a stand-out at wr as a rookie,Falcons and most fans are very happy with J. Jones. Year 2 will slience all critics as far as Jones is concerned. “Bird”, most true fans do care. Thats what makes us fans!!

Good morning Orlando, I uncovered a small problem with your numbers. My Draft site listed over 40 tight ends. 18 are deemed draftable. You seem to have stopped counting after the first three. Have we explored the limits of your math skills? You omitted Michael Egnew and and Ladairius Green, If either were to last till the fifth round, I’d consider myself a mighty happy Falcon Fan.

Personally, I think every Falcons draft pick needs to be at least 300 pounds and play on either line. Perhaps a few guys that either have just gotten released from prison or have anger management issues. This team is in desperate need of size and toughness. Just blow the dust off of Harvey Dahl’s psychological profile and use that as your draft guide!

Marko – My math skills are fine. Egnew is from Missouri. Look at their recent TE prospects. Last good one was Kellen Winslow SR!. Green is a project and has to add weight and learn how to block. Falcons could take Green late. But for the second round pick, there’s only there to consider and they will be gone with the wind.

The draft may be deep at WR ………..but none of this years crop of WRs grade out to be any where close to were AJ Green and Julio Jones were last year.
I hope the Falcons take a hybrid 3-4 OLB / 4-3 DE to allow Mike Nolan to run both 3-4 and 4-3 formations.
Kroy Bierrman will be a better 3-4 OLB then he is a 4-3 DE.
Weatherspoon will shift to ILB when in a 3-4.
In the 3rd round the Falcons pick up a space eating NT.
Top 2 picks go to defense in order to give Mike Nolan the flexibility to run multiple formations in his defensive scheme.
Burn your 5th and 6th rounders on interior lineman,and a TE in hopes you hit.
That is my Falcons War Room rant.

Goodness, Orlando, You seem a tad on the touchy side. Actually I’d assumed you met tight ends with second round grades, but you didn’t say that did You? Why so thin skinned? Did you have breakfast with birddroppings?
I politely disagree with your assessment of Egnew. If He’d been Catching balls for Andrew Luck last season, you’d think much more highly of him. Last season he caught 50 passes, the year before 90. The difference seems to be that Blaine Gabbert moved to Jacksonville. If Matty were to throw him a couple of balls, I’m pretty sure he’d remember how it’s done. By the way , I counted 18 TE’s with draftable grades. For your information, that’s pretty close to exploring the limits of my math skills. Anyway my comment was intended as as good natured fun. If I hurt your Itty bitty feelings, I’m sincerely sorry.

One of the best TE’s, JImmy Graham was taken in the 3rd round. He could have been ours. I keep saying, get someone with some basketball skills and you have a jump on others.
As for Julio, he’s going to be great. If TD can get us an OL we will be in great shape. That is if we have chosen a good OC who can use his imagination for plays for the receivers we have. With good pass blocking, how would you like to go up against RW & JJ at WR, HD in the slot, TG at TE, Snelling at FB and Quizz at RB? This is why we need (and hopefully got),a better OC. We have to have better than the play caller of the last 4 years. I just hope the conservative plays were from MM and not because MS insisted on them.

The Falcons need to stay away from drafting PAC12, BIG10, and other guys outside of the SEC. Drafting at 55 still leaves some effective players available from top tier SEC teams to fill a void.

For the most part, I think the draft makes sense (in the top 12).
I can’t see 3 CB’s going back to back to back. And I can’t see Orson Charles going in the 1st.
I’d take Dwayne Allen from Clemson any day before Orson (and I’m a UGA fan). Depending on the team, I’d take him before Coby Fleener as well.
As for the Falcons, I’d be happy with that pick. LT, DE, and secondary help is what I’m hoping for.

I’d like us to take a LB in the 2nd round, because everyone knows we have the WORST slate of linebackers in the NFL. Then maybe in the 3rd round take an OL or DE.

Come the end of the season when we’re struggling in the same areas we’ve struggled in during the past four years and folks are screaming we need a change, I can at least say I called my shot. This draft is loaded with POTENTIAL(developmental) starters and Probowl talent, but not draft day starting talent. I’m wondering what our plans are for the RB position. MTurner and OMughelli are FAs after this season, and we have JSnelling, JRogers, ASmith and DNance wrapped up. Are we really going to carry 6-7 RBs? Will we wait until next yr to find replacements for Turner and/or Mughelli?

NO, NO!!!!! Don’t draft a OL with your 1st pick in the Draft. Most can’t start for a SUPER BOWL team which I thought TD and the Birds wanted when Tony G. and McClure came back! We need someone whowill have an immediate impact. People who know Orson Charles will tell you that the incident out of character for him. I hope they back off of him, the Birds will get two hits in one. A TE receiver who can stretch the field ala what N.E. does and a player who can be high impact once TG retires. Get Boykin in 3rd if Grimes plays spoiled or Dunta doesn’t come in strong, plus he can replace Weems as a punt returner. In the 5th best OL available, 6th QB from Boise St. or Russell Wilson. With the 2, 7th round picks, get best Safety and DE left. Then jump out and ghet the best non drafted rookies. Watch the waiver wire especially last cut date and pick-up the best LB and OL cut and the FaLCONs will go to the Super Bowl.

geroge- he tore his acl the last game of the season so his stock went down due to the injury but the falcons worked him out not too long ago. he would be a steal in the later rounds because he was a beast in college untill the injury happened. good question.
my thoughts- i think the falcons will go defense for the 55th pick. I do see them trading up to get coby fleener tho if he makes it in the second rd. I think they will draft trumaine johnson as one of their first two picks. I like schwartz he has nfl blood lines and he has expereince in playing in all sorts of blocking schemes from playing them in college. I think hes a really good pick but not in the second maybe in the 3rd.

mark — Insurance if Baker doesn’t fully recover and depth. Montana CB Trumaine Johnson is interesting, but that 4.61 is scary. Andre Branch or Brandon Thompson could slip. They may get a TE later and also a backup QB at some point.

It’s not so much that people think one incident makes him a habitual offender. You have to look at his lack of judgment at a time when he should have been exercising the greatest care and concern so that his character and judgment not come into question. Then teams who had him on their draft board start asking themselves “Ok, what else do we not know about him”. He might want to consider staying at home and having a RC Cola with Peanuts instead.

You NEED to watch some film of Mr. Kuechly. He is a stand out player, and fits in just about any defense immediately. He is smarter than most middle linebackers in the NFL already. Many professional scouts see a lot of Brian Urlacher in Luke. If he slips out of the first 15 picks then I know nothing. If he drops from the first round then you are the smartest man that has ever walked the face of this planet.

What other guys do you think the Falcons are considering at pick #55? Any CB help likely to be available around that range? Not disagreeing with your mock as adding some OL help/depth should be a top priority and I don’t know enough about Schwartz. I’m just trying to get a better feel for the possible options at pick #55.

I have faith in Dimitroff that we’ll get a good one at 55 most likely a lineman offense or defense. The Dolphins have all but sky written that they’re taking Tanneyhill and I think that’s an awful big reach but then they’ve made than their share of questionable moves the past few years (thanks for passing on Matty Ice BTW.) Floyd seems a little high to me at #10. I like the pick of Hill #27 to NE, that’s a great fit for both parties.

Orlando, the depth of WRs in this draft makes the Jones trade look even worse. What was TD thinking???? Unbelievable. A good GM, not a great, just a good one, doesn’t trade a treasure trove of picks for a WR with the draft next year rift with them. UNLESS, he thinks that WR is the missing piece for a SB. Obviously, that was not the case.

Marko – My math skills are fine. Egnew is from Missouri. Look at their recent TE prospects. Last good one wasts Kellen Winslow SR!. Green is a project and has to add weight and learn how to block. Falcons could take Green late. But for the second round pick, there’s only there to consider and they will be gone with the wind.

D-Led you’re pretty good with your first-round mocking so this is certainly food for thought. What about the Falcons taking James Hanna in later rounds as a TE project? Will need to work on his blocking (most of them do) but with his speed, has a lot of upside.

Dom — Kiper has Hanna as his 7th best tight end. He is intriguing. I like guys from Texas. He’s from Flower Mound High is Texas and was fast enough to return punts in high school (avg. 24.2 yards per return). He’s projected to go in the 5th or 6th. I think I like LaDarius Green better.
