Falcons have offer from HBO’s Hard Knocks

UPDATE 5:45: The Falcons have been approached by HBO and are considering the opportunity to appear on Hard Knocks.

The Falcons have been approached by HBO to appear on their popular “Hard Knocks” sports reality show.

The team would not comment, but acknowledged that they are considering the offer.

Last May, in a major shift, general manager Thomas Dimitroff indicated during a national radio interview that the team would not summarily rule out being featured on the show.

The sports documentary chronicles the team’s training camp. Two seasons ago, the New York Jets were featured. Last season, because of the lockout the show did not air. In 2009, the Cincinnati Bengals were featured.

Dimitroff, in the past, has noted that some football traditionalists must become more comfortable with the notion that the NFL is “a league of entertainment.”

Owner Arthur Blank has talked about the Falcons becoming a “national” team like the Dallas Cowboys. What better way to win national fans than to take your show to them via your own reality show?

Head coach Mike Smith was on Hard Knocks when he was an assistant with Baltimore.

In the past, HBO has made their announcement of the featured team in May.

EARLIER POST: There is a “sourced” report from Rich Cimini from ESPNNewYork.com  that the Falcons have emerged as a leader to be featured on

HBO’s popular “Hard Knocks” sports reality show.

Here’s the link.

We have calls into the team to see if they will comment on the report.

Last May, in a major shift, general manager Thomas Dimitroff indicated on a

national radio interview that he would not summarily rule out the team being featured on the show.

In the past, when we’d ask about Hard Knocks, the answer was basically a “no #$^&^*! way.” The Falcons turned down an offer from HBO three years ago.

The sports documentary chronicles the team’s training camp. Two seasons ago,  the New York Jets were featured and Rex Ryan expanded most folks vocabulary and taught viewers “How to play like a Jet.” In 2009, the Cincinnati Bengals were featured and they went on to win the AFC North.

The Falcons will have to determine if they are pleased with the development and maturation of their team in order to accept any offer.

When asked about Hard Knocks on Sirius Radio, Dimitroff said. “I truly believe that an organization has to be in the right spot to jump into something like Hard Knocks. I think it sheds a lot of light on our league. This is a league of entertainment. There are some traditionalists that struggle with it, but they have to work against the grain a little bit and see that this is about entertainment. Hard Knocks is a good show for the fan base.”

That was a major shift in the organization’s thinking.

“[Three] years ago we were approached and decided that it wasn’t right for us at that point,” Dimitroff said. “That’s not to say we wouldn’t go down that road if it was presented to us at another time. We are much closer to being in that spot where it’s not going to be as much of a distraction as it would have been another time.

“It’s such an individual thing. Hard Knocks could be right for some of the teams that are fairly entrenched. It could be right for some team that wants to kick off some more brand recognition.”

Head coach Mike Smith was on Hard Knocks when he was an assistant with Baltimore.

We do not need the distractions for our new coaching staff. A terrible move if this comes to fruition.

I’m not paying the 18.99 a month but I’m not really against it.

My question is what’s in it for HBO this year? This has been one of the least interesting teams this off season. More people would probably watch the Jets this year, we aren’t exactly gregarious.

The Broncos or Jets would be better for TV.

Falcons need this and Atlanta needs this. We have some great characters on our team that I would love to see on the show. Think about Smitty and Spoon on national TV every Sunday night during the preseason. The country would fall in love with the falcons.

Hardknocks is not some second rate documentary; it is a really well done series. I think it is a great move!

Ha! The Zolciack’s… true true.

Seriously though, Giants just traded for Keith Rivers…. we’re still cool with Nicholas really? Robert James?

I do not understand why they are not trying to improve the talent this team. Anyone can see it’s far from perfect. I can’t understand for the life of me why they are not even making minor tweaks.

They cannot possibly like this team THAT much. We’ve all seen them play and scheme doesn’t make THAT much difference.

Whats the payout generated to the team for agreeing to this? Maybe it can help pay for the Arthur M. Blank Outdoor Arena.

With no points in the playoff game, no offseason moves, and no No. 1 draft pick, this may be the only way Arthur and TD can get a fan, a reporter and a TV camera out to FB.

Let’s not be too critical! After not showing up for the last two playoff games , making no offseason moves, and having no No. 1 pick, this may be only way Arthur and TD can get a fan, a reporter and a camera out to FB on the same day.

I am keeping my fingers crossed that the Falcons say “NO” to Hard Knocks. The program makes the players and the organization that it features look like a bunch of idiots. The Falcons don’t need the exposure and the Falcon fans don’t want to see their team made fool of. I agree with the premise that with two brand new coordinators the team definitely doesn’t need any distractions and a TV crew shadowing their every move would surely be a major distraction. Let Hard Knocks find some other team to focus on for the entertainment of their viewers.

D-Led….see if you can answer a complex question in a short answer….
The owners say they need new stadiums for new, increased, revenue streams to stay competitive (on the field I am guessing). Yet, they have a salary cap in the NFL, and all teams make profits beyond their salary cap expenses. So If they’re all in the black already, isn’t the new revenue simply for more profit and nothing to do with maintaining competitiveness on the field? All teams will still have same salary cap for players regardless of an increase every season or so and all teams are already meeting those requirements. No team is losing money in the NFL. The fans always get screwed with higher prices on everything when the owner wants something like a new stadium. We can’t afford anymore.

Where is the NEED for new revenue? There is a difference between WANT and NEED.

Some focused exposure can’t hurt and I would love to watch the team outside of the Georgia Dome. Obviously this won’t take care of it by itself, but it’s a good first step to getting over the “small” market hump and really make a name for the team and the city. I like the idea.

Bird Dawg Country — A great portion of the revenues (television is the biggest) are shared. However, these new stadiums are about ancillary or unshared revenues (hot dogs, suites, parking, etc.). Nobody buys suites at an indoor stadium. Fact of life. At an outdoor stadium packed with suites, they’d move and the team could keep that revenue. Those extra funds don’t have to be shared and can go back into your team via signing bonuses and other amenities. I hope this is helpful.

Nooooooooooooooooo. They were hard to watch on the field last year AS IS. If I want to see that I can watch Sybil or the “Three faces of Eve” as you never knew what team was going to show up until the playoffs, and unfortuantely that is NOT a compliment! Do you actually want to see Kim Zociak Beirmann on the sidelines with her kids watching her hubby chain smoking, breast feeding and singing? NOW DO YOU?

If the show makes the team look like fools, it’s probably due to them being foolish on camera. This team needs to grow up and help Mr. Blank increase revenue.
Bulldawg Country
If you’re not growing your brand, you’re killing it. Increasing profits for their shareholders IS the business of the league and it’s tied to performance on the field. It’s not an “either-or” deal….
