Down at the league meetings in Palm Beach, Fla., our good pal Alex Marvez from the Late Hits show on SiriusXM NFL radio caught up with Falcons head coach Mike Smith on Wednesday.
Click for the link to the audio file.
In the interview, Smith talked about the new coordinators, the team’s leadership and how he expects Sean Weatherspoon to step into the void created by the departure of linebacker Curtis Lofton.
Under former defensive coordinator Brian VanGorder the Falcons regularly went with a 3-3-5 alignment on third downs. That didn’t work out too well as they couldn’t mount a consistent pass rush nor cover all zone sectors in coverage. The team finished ranked 29th in third down efficiency last season.
Defensive coordinator Mike Nolan has played both the 4-3 and 3-4 alignments and Smith again alluded to the fact that they will be more “multiple” under Nolan. (Beat Writer’s Translation: Expect some 3-4 derivatives on third downs.) That will be something to watch when the rookie camp convenes a couple of weeks after the draft and later this summer during the OTAs and minicamp.
Here’s a transcript of the interview:

Mike Nolan, Mike Smith and Dirk Koetter. (Curtis Compton/Ccompton@ajc.com)
MARVEZ: You have two new coordinators coming in. Talk a little bit about the impact that you are hoping that will (have)on what is already a very good football team.
SMITH: We are very excited about the additions to our coaching staff. On the defensive side of the ball we have a new defensive coordinator in Mike Nolan, who’s got 14 years experience as a coordinator and 24 years in the NFL as an assistant coach. Mike is a guy that I worked for in Baltimore, so I have a very good understanding of what he brings to the table. Mike is going to bring a new dynamic to our defense, giving it s some flexibility in terms of being a little bit more multiple with his background in the 3-4 defense. He’s a very good third down coach in terms of his third down efficiency. He’s got great packages so I’m looking forward to seeing what he can do with our roster.
MARVEZ: What about on the offensive side of the ball?

Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan will be throwing more deep passes under new offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter. (Jason Getz / jgetz@ajc.com)
SMITH: Dirk Koetter joins us from Jacksonville. Dirk was a very successful college coach at Arizona State. (The) vertical passing game is probably the thing that he is most strong in and it’s something that we want to work on. We feel like that we want to get the ball down the field a little bit more with our two wide receivers and our tight end. Dirk has brought in a new perspective. One thing about when there is change, you get a new evaluation of your roster from the outside. I think that’s a healthy, positive thing.
MARVEZ: Mike, how do you reflect on the 2011 season? You make the postseason, which is a positive, unfortunately, the season ends a little bit too soon for the Atlanta Falcons.
SMITH: I think it was a very inconsistent season for our organization. I don’t know that we ever got into the routine that we would have liked to have gotten into. It was kind of back and forth. I think that is something that we have to address moving forward. Then again, you want to be peaking at the right time, as you know, December and January is when you want to be playing your best football. Unfortu-nately, we haven’t done that. We haven’t played as well as we need to in the postseason. That’s something that starts with me and we have got to look at how we prepare our guys and get our guys ready to go.
MARVEZ: (Intor to question) Where is the locker room leadership right now on your team?
SMITH: Well, I think we have a great leadership group in our locker room. We’ve got a number of what I call mentors. On the offensive side of the ball you’ve got Tony Gonzalez. We were able to sign Todd McClure back (on Tuesday) which I think is a very positive move for us in terms of leadership. You’ve got Michael Turner and Matt Ryan. So, I think offensively we’ve got a number of guys that know how we do things in Atlanta and (know) what we’re looking for. Defensively, (we’ve) got John Abraham back on the defensive line. We lost Curtis Lofton in free agency so there is going to have to be a void filled there, but I think Sean Weatherspoon is ready to step into that role. Sean is a very verbal player and well –respected even though he’s only been in the league two years.

Khaos…..shut the f*** up. Ive been a bird fan since 1990 and I am very pleased to have the sucsess we’ve had with this administration. Better to be winning and get a playoff game every year than to hang you’re head in shame year after year. Everyone who is on Ryans case should back off….. How many QBs in the modern era go to the playoffs and win right away…….not many i can think of. I’m looking forward to the season, and beleive we will be fine.

Khaos, It only takes me a couple of minutes to think back about how it was 10 years ago and appreciate watching the Falcons play now. Cleaning the coaching house is not a guarantee Super Bowl appearance…in fact, it makes the chances for that more slim. We’ve got guys that built a strong, but predictable, team. Our third down defense last year was awful. Inconsistency means you were both brilliant and terrible in spurts…so the potential to be brilliant is there within these coaches and players. Personally, I think the current level of coaching replacement may be enough to bring some unpredictability back into our game so our talent can shine a little more consistently.

“How many QBs in the modern era go to the playoffs and win right away…”
Tom Brady, Steve McNair, Kurt Warner, Ben Rothlesberger, Dante Culpepper, Joe Montana, Tim Tebow, etc… Actually the list is pretty deep…
Just saying…
But Ryan is pretty select company now, Ken O’Brien and Peyton Manning… Still, the Colts gutted their defense after 0-3…

JSS. Well they are the guys that have taken the Falcons to the playoffs 3 out of 4 years, but you’re right we should fire the guys that have given us the best 4 years in a row ever. Perry Fewell? Ok I would like to think we replace Smitty with an upgrade though. I can’t see firing Mike Smith to hire a Perry Fewell, a guy with little or no head coaching experience. Giants have 27th rank defense hmm I don’t see him being an upgrade. Whoever drafted those beast on that D-line in NY gets a lot of credit though. They do hunt when the time is right. Clarence Shelmon? Yea…no I don’t wanna take a long shot on a guy on sabbatical. I had to Google him LOL. You must know the guy. You a Cali native? Few would pull that name out of their hats. No long shots guys. We have a winning head coach already so if we’re going to fire him, it needs to be a sure fire upgrade. Next?

I was very sure what I was saying… You’re not slow, petty maybe, but not slow… Look at the winners and losers of Super Bowls since 1998… Now look at the turnovers in all coaching staffs since then… Only the Steelers (the only changed the HC), the Colts, the Patriots, the Eagles, and the Titans did not have not turnovers in staffs (some multiple times). The NFL winners have consistency at the top of the coaching ranks has become the myth. The Titans and Eagles only had 2 SB appearances and no victories between them… Look, some of you willing to be like the Steelers were between 95 and finally winning in 05. The Rooneys could live with that… The difference is those teams actually won and were competitive in the playoff and Championship games… Sorry, the Falcons haven’t been in the mix since the early 4th quarter in Arizona, take the blinders off…

Tsk tsk, if you’re up against the Cap, and you sticking with “what is essentially” the same roster you try “smoke and mirrors,” that is change the coordinators or the approach and “hope” that people catch on to your scheme! Arizona did it the year they went to the Super Bowl with Whisenhunt with Haley and Pendergrast together for 07-08. If you fail (see the 2007 Baltimore Ravens), you blow it up… You guys seem to forget that this team has/had a high number against the cap… What “upgrade head coach” (most people are conjecturing Gruden or Cowher when they make that statement) is going to go to a team against the cap and the talent has not performed in the post-season (andI’m not talking underachieving, but thrashed)?

Hey Y’all:
We have better upgrade in all positions. Tampa Bay, Carolina, New Orleans have strengthen themselves with new talent. even the Niners have strengthen theor running back position by getting Brandon jacobs from the Giants. Why didn’t we take a look at getting him. Now that is a big, hard running, agressive, fast running back. The Niners got a steal. We also need to look at our secondary. The leauge and the division are going with tall, strong, fast receivers. We either have to strenghten our rush by getting some big defensive tackles that can move (like the old Grady Jackson) , come up with some good blitz packages or our secondary is going to get “TOASTED”. I hope we fix this.
On offense, we have the talent but I wish we could get some aggressive runnin running backs that know how to blast for the touchdown. I also wish we coud get back to our “zone blocking scheme” that we had for Warrick Dunn, especially with that small running back that we have. Our receivers will be GREAT!!!!
Well this is the perfect time to make changes and adjustments for the upcoming season. I CAN’T WAIT UNTIL THE SEASON STARTS. I KNOW COAH SMITH AND HIS NEW STAFF ARE COMING IN HUNGRY. THE PROCESS CONTINUES IN OUR GETTING TO THE SUPER BOWL. LET”S DO THIS . LET’s DO THIS TOGETHER IN “ONE HEARTBEAT!!”.

ASHCAN, JSS and all the COMRADE/SMITTY HATERS:
Please keep the ridiculous comments coming….you guys are hilarious. Honestly. It’s a damn good thing you don’t own the team; we’d be the Browns if you did. Or the Raiders.
A few thoughts on the complaints:
Scheme matters. See the 2011 49ers for proof. Changing coordinators matter. At 43-21, hasn’t Smitty earned the benefit of the doubt?
Letting Lofton go was a great call; he sucks against the pass, esp on third down. Birds were 29th on 3rd down D. Extra credit: Please review the Harvin touchdown on 4 and 13 against Minnesota for a refresher on Lofton’s pass defense.
The OL in 2010 was one of the best in the NFL; it stabilized after the sixth game last year. We had three new starters. They aren’t new anymore. Plus, we brought in the dude from Jacksonville, and we’ll likely draft someone on the OL. Do you genuises think that the Comrade isn’t aware that the O-Line needs to improve if we wanna throw deep? He KNOWS.
Last and most important, for all the Ryan haters:
Ryan has had one of the best statistical starts in NFL history. Dear God look it up if you doubt it. He’s got one glaring weakness: no touch on the deep ball. I bet he knows. I bet it keeps him up at night. I bet his good boy type A personality has him throwing bombs to his wife in the middle of the night trying to work on timing. With his winning percentage, why don’t you guys just sit back and give him a chance?

On Fewell, he is just as bright any of the young coaches out there. And despite the fact he was given a train wreck in Buffalo, that team competed those last few weeks (7 games), only getting blown out once here in Atlanta… Don’t be a “snarky central blogger” and ask for choices (that you can actually get) and then get all nutty when they are put on the table… Ole 4th and inches, new age Barney Rubble is no nuclear scientist!

No, a different roster with actual stout lines and not overpaying a rookie QB by $20-25M (with salary cap implications) would have been the place to start addressing those problems. M. Smith, without Payton the Saints are still going to be tough to beat. They still have Brees at QB. Plus, Pete called all the plays for their offense at the end of the season and some will argue that with Pete calling the plays, the Saints offense is better. And from the sound of it, Bill will be the Saints head coach while Payton is out. I don’t want Bill as their head coach. All that’s doing is replacing Payton with the guy he modeled himself after. Earlier you wanted a different coach and when I asked you to give me replacement suggestions you gave 2 that don’t make much sense so now you just want an entirely different roster. Maybe you should just find you a different team. You don’t like the coach here nor evidently the players. What’s next? You gonna tell me the Falcons logo needs to be changed. Matt Ryan was not paid “market price” for the 3rd pick (his contract escalated the price for the pick)! Vince Young was picked in the same exact spot. 1. His contract was $72M added an extra year – he got a 6th year, and his guaranteed signing bonus was $34.75 million dollars,
Vince Young got five years with a sixth year team option (which the Titans voided) and as much as US$58 million overall (That is 11.6M per season but his contract was full of roster incentives and bonuses for performance) including only $25.7 million in guaranteed money. Sorry to tell you, but Ryan’s was not, his was straight cap devouring money! The previous year, Joe Thomas same spot in 2007 signed a 6-year contract worth $43 million, $23 million guaranteed, including a voidable year, with the Browns.
I don’t know what “markets and pricing” course you took, but please go and ask for a rebate…
Hey, just like Mike Tomlin, let’s see when history actually tells the story (on Fewell)? Everybody in Pittsburgh wanted Grimm or Whisenhunt!
You can’t keep your lies straight… You asked “if he was replaced” then who would “you” have in place? Like “I” said Cowher and Gruden are NOT coming back for the Atlanta job… And if they were to come back here, it would be to tear it down and start over… Wipe that!

By all indications you are an idiot. How did Vince Young perform after the contract was signed? What bench is Vince Young keeping warm? Vince Young is a free agent right now and nobody wants him. Vince Young was drafted in 2006. Matt Ryan was drafted in 2008 so quite naturally the salary/value is going to increase each year. WTF do you think it does dummy, stay the same every year? Surely your not simple minded enough to try to compare the LT market value to that of the QB? You always compare apples to apples not apples to oranges. One of the reasons why the NFL came up with the rookie wage scale is because each year the market value for players drafted in the top 10 was rising too high and thus too risky(Jamarcus Russell). The reason why I know you are mentally challenged is because you truly believe a businessman such as Arthur Blank would pay more than the market dictates for a QB picked 3rd overall. Your feelings are probably still hurt because Mike Vick is no longer using up good cap space in Atlanta. You brought up bonds and brokerage houses but you obviously know squat about the fact that the NFL is a business. Arthur Blank is not in the business of giving any player any more money than the market dictates. Trust me I do not need to tell a lie to destroy your minor league arguments LMAO. The truth is all I need to rip up your weak theories. Seriously, I’m rolling on the floor right now because you took the time to do all of this research of contracts and you didn’t have the first clue that values increase each season. The 2 years in between the contracts is why they are not the same. Wow you are a thick one huh? Witherspoon is a warrior and will pay big dividends for the Falcons. In fact, this team has many budding stars on both sides of the ball. But until we get a quality offensive line in place, it does not matter. One may say what they will about MS and the two new coordinators, but TD is responsible for not building this team for the long-run. Sure we have many quality pieces in place, but you do not go out an get a flashy wide receiver when the needs are on the offensive line. EVERY improvement project starts with a strong foundation. This responsibility falls squarely in the lap of TD!

JSS- I’ll make this simple since you obviously can’t handle the complicated. Vince Young was drafted in 2006. Matt Ryan was drafted in 2008, obviously the market values increase annually. Did you honestly think they stay the same every year? Wow! When Joe Thomas becomes a QB drafted at the 3rd spot overall then you can use him in this debate. Lets stick to apples and apples OK no oranges please. Seriously, the fact that you don’t understand that the market values increase every year is troubling to me. One of the reasons the NFL came up with the rookie wage scale is because the market values had gotten out of hand on players drafted in the top 10. But regardless of all that, your argument is pointless and idiotic. Matt Ryan is our QB, he has signed his contract and it was a fair one. You speak of bonds and brokerage houses but you don’t have sense enough to know Arthur Blank is not giving Matt Ryan or any other player any more money than the market says he deserves based on where he was drafted and the position he plays. In this battle of minds I feel as though you are unarmed JSS. You can’t win the debate because you don’t know enough about the topic. You felt good about that last post I can tell but it is worthless because you don’t understand one basic concept. There is a 2 year difference between the time Vince Young got his contract and when Matt Ryan got his. In general players in the NFL become more expensive over time not less expensive. LOL
