New Orleans Saints linebacker Curtis Lofton was still putting his arms around the fact that he’s crossed rivalry lines when we chatted on Monday.
He’s following in the footsteps of Bobby Hebert, Morten Andersen, Craig “Ironhead” Heyward and Joe Horn as players who have played for both teams.
Here’s the Q&A:
Q: Are you pretty glad this process is over?
A: Oh yeah, I’m definitely excited to be done with the process and know where I’m going to be living and what team I’m going to be playing for. I’m happy.
Q: How did the meeting and the dinner go with the Saints?
A: The Saints called my agent and they were real excited that I was a free agent. They had me as the No. 1 linebacker in free agency. They had crossed me off their list because they thought there was no way the Falcons were going to let me go. But it turns out that they did and they had a chance. When I got down there coach (Sean) Payton, (defensive coordinator) Steve Spagnuolo, (assistant coach) Joe Vitt and (general manager) Mickey Loomis, all of those guys, kind of wrapped their arms around me and didn’t want to let me go. They were just happy that I was down there. We had great visits; talking about the defense, the team and the direction it was going. I was excited to be a part of it.
Q: Where did you all go out to eat?

Curtis Lofton amassed 577 tackles in four seasons with the Falcons. (Curtis Compton/CCompton@ajc.com)
A: We went out to Emeril’s.
Q: Was it pretty good?
A: Yes, I had some crawfish. I never had crawfish before so I got some of those. It was just good. I had pre-draft visit there, but we never really spent time with the coaches and all of that. Then I got drafted to the Falcons, so you kind of grow up hating the Saints. It was a very important visit for me to take just to get a feel for the coaches and the players and see how they are.
Q: Any bad after taste in your mouth because the Falcons showed you the business side of football?
A: I was one of those people (who thought I’d finish my career with the Falcons.) But there is no bad taste in my mouth. . . it is a business. The teams are going to do what’s best for them. I had to do what is best for me. A team is going to put a value on a guy and other teams put more value on a guy. That was the situation. The guy has to go to the team that wants him more. The Saints wanted me more, so that’s where I went.
Q: Have you thought about putting on the Saints uniform yet?
A: I have and I’m excited. It’s going to be a little different for me, but I think I’ll fit right in. Gold was one of my colors in high school. We used to wear the black uniforms and Atlanta stopped doing that. I always wanted to wear the black uniforms so I’m excited about it. I can’t wait to get down there.

Here back in 2010, Curtis Lofton was being interviewed by Britton Lynn, a University of Alabama student who was a finalist to become the Falcons Taco Maco Insider. Lofton was set to visit the hospital and play with kids the following day. (By D. Orlando Ledbetter/AJC)
Q: Where are you going to play?
A: I talked to (Jonathan) Vilma and I talked to Coach Spagnuolo yesterday and they said they are going to get their best players on the field. They really don’t have everything all worked out. When I talked to Vilma he said “that if you feel comfortable and you’re the better [middle linebacker], then you’ll play the [middle] and I’ll play the [weakside] or vice versa or whatever.” I just want to win. Whatever we have to do to win, that’s what I want to do.
Q: With the Saints being in trouble with the league was that a factor in your decision?
A: Not at all. I wasn’t there when the bounty stuff went down. I have no issue with that. My main thing was, I went down there and they have a winning mentality. They’ve won a lot of games over the years. I wanted to go play for a team that has a chance to win the Super Bowl and I think that’s them. They are kind of taking on the mentality that it’s “us verses them.” That’s how I feel and can’t wait to be a part of it.
Q: Do you have a better chance to win a Super Bowl with the Saints?
A: Yes. I look at it like this. When you go to a team, it would be dumb not to think that you don’t have a better chance to win a Super Bowl with that team. I feel like Atlanta and the Saints have been evenly matched. But I really feel like there is more talent with the Saints. I will say that.
Q: Did you pick a number yet?
A: Yes, I think I will be wearing No. 50.
Q: Anything in closing?
A: Yes, I would like to thank the fans, Mr. Blank and the organization for taking a chance on a guy like me. The best of luck to them. Coach (Glenn) Pires really helped me grow on the field. Coach (Mike) Smith helped me grow on the field and off the field. I’m just thankful for them and the guys that I played with over the last four years.
Q: The fans have been on your case?
A: Yeah, I did an interview with someone from New Orleans and they said what do you look forward to? I said I look forward to playing on a team that has a chance to win a Super Bowl and that has truly great fans. I guess all of the Atlanta fans took it as me taking a dig at them. It’s been crazy. You can see all of the crap on my twitter timeline. But, hey, that’s part of the game I guess.

Akeem will be just as good as Lofton as a 2 down LB. Also, this will give Spoon the chance to be the unquestioned leader of the LBs. If Tatupu is healthy and back to form, then we definitely upgraded at LB, especially on 3rd down. I really don’t want a guy on my team who even entertains the idea of playing for the dirty scumbag Aints anyways. Don’t let the doorknob hitcha where the good lord splitcha Benedict Lofton

Welcome Mr. Lofton, Amazes me in the spite of the fact that we will lose our head coach for a year, our linebackers coach for 6 gms, our gm for 8 gms, yet we still have guys wanting to come and play for us. I’m not sure if any other team could accomplish that, just goes to show you what respect a winning team has.
P.S. Thanks Mr. Blank for handing us Mr. Lofton in a gift box.

The Saints paid heavily for great guy but an average NFL LB The net-net is a win for the Falcons…we’ll get someone faster, cheaper and better while the Saints get slower on defense and tie up more money.
One word of advice, Curtis…when Peyton or his trainers offer you white caplets, it is likely hydrocodone, not tylenol, and for this you’d better have a prescription.

Lofton is very good leader and tackler but he cannot cover receivers. He is too slow. I have watched him over the years. There is no such thing as a 2 down linebacker. This is a passing league where every down can be a pass.

Lofton is no more a traitor than Carl Nicks or Tracy Porter who left our Saints for a better deal where they could get it. It’s football, it happens every off season to every team. It sucks when you lose a good player, and you never want to see one of your best go to a heated in-division rival, but that happens as well. It’s happened to us, it’s happened to you, it’s happened to every team. That’s just football. Sometimes it goes your way sometimes it doesn’t, and you roll with the punches and move on the best way you can.
Looking forward to our games next year and to come, and to my visits to your fine city as well as the chance to welcome you as visitors to ours.

Curtis, when the NFL hands down the penalties for bounty-gate, your new team’s defense is going to get eviscerated brother! Couldn’t happen to a nicer guy, but sometimes it ain’t all about the Benjamins chief. Enjoy getting your clock cleaned this coming year, you’re going to earn every stinkin’ penny.

Last I checked making the tackle ends the play in the NFL. So for Falcons fans to pretend that losing the guy who led your team in tackles for the last three years is a good move is delusional.
Do you think it was an accident he was the leading tackler? Were the other players just standing around saying let Lofton get him. So we should hang our hopes on a young player who couldn’t crack the lineup and a guy who didn’t play last year? Only in Falcon land does this add up.
The defense was average before. It has the potential to be worse now. If there are no other additions then are only hope is that Nolan will put the players in a better position to perform(i.e. less soft zone ). I do think that is possible and expect to see improved play from Dunta.

Believe it or not, I am excited about next year. We have two new coordinators who know what they are doing. Both sides of the ball will be more aggressive and I know some of you don’t believe it. We did n’t need a big splash or spend big money. We already have talent on this team. The teams that spends alot usually have high draft picks.
You can call me on it at the end of the season, but I predict 30+ point a game with the new game plan and a top 5 defense. With the talent on offense there is no way we can not be explosive unless he calls the Mularkey conservatieve plays. Nolan knows defense, just look at every team he has been associated with.
The Falcons will put a beat down on everyone on the schedule. Unfortunately Saints fans will use the bounty as an excuse.

Yeah, what I won’t miss:
Watching what’s left of Lofton’s burnt corpse when he tries to play coverage.
Also, I like how he pretends to not understand why Atlanta fans would take exception to what he said. We may not be as “awesome and great” like Saints fans, but we also know what he was really saying by what he did and didn’t say.
Akeem Dent will be a good, full-time LB for the Falcons, something Lofton never was, as again, evidenced by his poor performance in passing situations.

@Steven A Smith Lofton was not the best player on our D. That goes to either Weatherspoon or Grimes. Lofton was very solid but never spectacular and seemed jealous of Spoon sometimes. (watch a few D Block episodes and body/face language) With Dent and Tatupu we’ll be fine. He is trying to save face about his fans comment but we all knew what he meant. He’s just salty b/c the brass didnt want him anymore. We had nothing to do with that and from what Ive seen over the years, we thought he was a bright spot on the team. Enough people! Lofton is no more a traitor than Dahl. Everyone can agree the Falcons let Dahl get away. He had to find a job an landed with the Rams. The Falcons had already signed Tatupu, before Lofton inked his deal with the Saints.
The Saints are a professional organization. Even without the bounty system & all the suspensions to management, we will still face Drew Brees twice per year, with or without Lofton and their coach the same players will show up and our hands will be full trying to get a victory. Why would a player not want to play with a team that has a championship quarterback, future hall of famer, and play in our division.
Secondly, you know who took Brookings place, Lofton. Who led the team in tackles after Brookings, Lofton. Who was the middle linebacker during the 13-3 season, Lofton. Who has played in every game the last 3 years as our middle linebacker, Lofton. Who did not play at all last year, Tatupu. Who could not get on the field to play last year, Akeem Dent. Not to say these guys can’t play, but to suggest Lofton was a bust is crazy, and who know how many snaps they will take. History suggests Lofton would have been on the field, his former employer knew this, but choose to take the chance…Lofton is not at fault here.
But here is the silver lining per all the posts here, if Lofton was so bad on 3rd down and he can’t cover down field. Then our brain trust should exploit that weakness and attack Lofton down field on first & second down. Do not wait for thrid down. Also, since he is such a run stuffer, maybe we should not run the ball either, we don’t want to play to his strength. Surly the new OC can take advantage, Right???
So I am guessing we have really out smarted the Saints on this one, by allowing Lofton to sign with the Saints, we have improved our offensive line. As a result, Lofton has guaranteed himself at least 2 losses, because most of you feel he was not our best defensive player, he was OVERRATED and the REAL reason why we scored only 2 points in a playoff game…..your anger is MISPLACED.

Also, the black and gold took over the entire lower endzone section where we sat. You want to talk about TRUE FANS??!!! Sell out your home games with season tickets. But that’s right, you don’t go to ANY of your teams’ games, doesn’t matter the sport.

The process or whatever it is has freaking derailed.
Resigning Decoud/Biermann and not signing Grimes long term last year is already crushing.
Translation, we get through camp realize Baker still sucks and we start getting desperate, signing some one to cover for Decoud…. And another broken pass rusher.
The plan now apparently is to go 8-8 this year at best

How can anyone have a problem wit what Lofton said? He is going to a team that has a chance to win a Super Bowl. Surely more of a chance than the team that let him go. Saying the Saints have great fans is not saying that the Falcons don’t. They are not mutually exclusive.

Lofton is a good player, but he isn’t a great player, and never will be. He simply doesn’t have the speed or explosiveness to be one. He’s a solid and dependable pro that will show up week in and week out, but he will never approach the category of elite linebackers.
This is why the falcons are moving on. They drafted him in the second round hoping they got a steal, and what they got was a solid starter. They obviously like Dent a lot, and they drafted him only one round later then Lofton. They will give him a shot this year and see what he has as a starter. If he doesn’t look like he’ll be the long term answer, they will draft a linebacker in next years draft when they have a full compliment of picks.
In the long run, this won’t have a major impact, but next year is more of an uncertainty given the health of Tatupu and Dent’s inexperience (then again, they started Lofton as a rookie, so starting a second year player is actually less of a risk).

How can you play for a team for 4 years and leave, but yet feel like the team you are currently with have a better team? Things don’t change overnight, so apparently that is how Lofton felt when he was in a Falcons uniform. Thanks a lot for your true colors and giving us the opportunity to play faster without you. And why do we care what the aint fans are saying. Look at the embarassment of a team, coach, GM that they have. They are grasping at straws to remain relevant, before pulling out the brown bags again.
They haven’t even locked up their best player yet. Wonder if he’s reconsidering staying there long term.

Hey Curt Curtis,
the problem with disrespecting an entire city on your way out the door,is the fact that We pay your salary. Without a fan base to watch and pay our money and the interest in the Home Team you would be back to making a hundred bucks a game, like they did in the days before the TV contracts and having to work a regular job during the week. The playoff game where the Giants humiliated and spanked your asses spoke for itself, that game spoke louder than all the trash you could ever talk. It was an affront to the senses to watch such an armageddon of one sided asskicking. So jibber jabber on…
Whatever.

Why would you boo Lofton??? If anything, boo Falcons management for letting one of their best defensive players walk out the door while signing a guy who is so injury prone he never hit the field last year. Additionally, the Falcons brass decided that spending huge dollars on a DB too short to cover the elite receivers in the league.
Lofton was a huge asset, and will be missed. He was the defensive play caller and had the “it” factor for linebackers in the mold of Mike Singletary. So what if he was not a 4 down player? The way the Falcons gave up 3rd and long situations over and over again was repulsive, and was not tied exclusively to Mr. Lofton.

My 2 cents..
Loften was a good player and a really good community guy. However, it became apparent to me that after the 2nd year that he was not going to have the impact everyone expected. He never seemed to step up to the next level. Plus, he always looked about 10-15 lbs heavier than he should be. Weatherspoon looks like the real deal when it comes to an impactful team leader…
From the Saints perspective, they get a solid tackler to take Vilma’s place, because word is he is going to get suspended along with other defensive players…
Lofton just chased the $$ and may have thought higher of himself since gracing the cover os Sports Illustrated. Yes, he made a lot of tackles but that is what linebackers do. I do not recall him blowing up plays and his coverage was atrocious! Just be real, he could not cover ANYONE.

Hey Falcons fans, we got a good one. I have always liked Lofton and because it’s obvious your fan base is not knowledgeable about football you think that your leading tackler is the problem. It only makes the point. If you ask any DC in football in general, they will tell you that the leading tackler should be a linebacker. If you’re leading tackler is in the secondary, for example Roman Harper for the Saints last year, then you really have a problem.
BTW, the other reason Lofton looked bad with you and he will be good with us is simple. Because your offense can’t score consistently. This leads to more pressure on the defense and the reason that they wear out. Also, Spagnuolo is known for the d-line and that makes any defense better. Look at the Giants last year. Saints scored 45 on them, you scored 2 in the playoffs. And the game was tight going into the 4th, so there is no excuse for getting 2 points in the playoffs. WHO DAT!!

Yea,falcon fans are the worst and there divided by racial lines. In fact, all atlanta fans in all sports are the worst and there boring. They don’t do nothing but come on AJC and argue fuss and fight among one another with war of words.Just pitiful.Don’t like the saints but lofton, your on a team that is capable of winning it all, even without a coach. The saints will still have a better record than the falcons. It will take them(Falcons) a season or two to learn the new systems on defense and offense which spells a common word for these falcons and there fans, and that’s WAIT TIL NEXT YEAR!!! LOL.

And another thing, who would want to play for a mediocre team for peanuts??? I hear fans calling him(Lofton) a traitor when they(Falcons) don’t have any money to pay him.Do the math rejected fans, you work for minimum wage or triple figures.DUHHHHH!!!!

Sid’s Comment
“The more I think about it the more I believe that Sean Payton is done in New Orleans.” Sid do yourself a favor, next time you think, don’t listen. The Saints reign of terror continues.

I am puzzled why the Falcons fans are portraying Lofton as the traitor. The man said he thought he would be a Falcon for life and they had every opportunity to keep him. Guess they thought people like Bierman were more important to keep around. It was a stupid business move by the Falcons’ brass and there is no getting around that. Now having said that…I bleed RED & BLACK. I hate BLACK & GOLD. Sorry Curtis, I guess that let’s you know where you stand with me now.

GOOD BYE MR LOFTON THE FALCONS DON’T NEED YOUR *** YOU CAN’T RUN, COVER, GO SIDELINE TO SIDELINE, NOR MAKE ANY IMPACT PLAYS. YOU’RE JUST A TWO DOWN LINEBACKER AND THE FALCONS WOULD’VE BEEN CRAZY TO PAY YOU 8 MILLION DOLLARS A YEAR. YOU AIN’T THAT GOOD BUDDY AND A WASTED DRAFT PICK.

Can’t even cover tight ends back of end zone. Top money for 2 dn player. Dent faster harder hitter. Curtis don’t turn your back on O linemen coming down field. Keep that head on a swivel. This is proably your last contract. They won’t have your back on the field. You’ll be the defenses scapegoat before the year is over. Vilma will have his back to you not protecting your back
