Vince Manuwai, formerly of Jacksonville, shown here blocking against the Titans. (By Paul Spinelli/Associated Press)
The Falcons signed offensive guard Vince Manuwai on Friday night.
Manuwai, 6-foot-2, 335 pounds, played for the Jacksonville Jaguars from 2003 to 2010. He played left guard in 111 games and started in 105.
He was a third round pick (72nd overall) out of Hawaii in 2003.
Manuwai was scheduled to make $3.5 million last season when he was cut by the Jaguars in July. The terms of his deal with the Falcons were undisclosed.
Manuwai was as solid run blocker, who helped to power the Jaguars run game for running backs Fred Taylor and Maurice Jones-Drew.
He suffered a torn tendon in his ankle during the lockout and wasn’t ready to play when it ended. He reported to camp at 344 pounds.
“I’m not bitter,” Manuwai told the Florida Times-Union after being cut. ”I’m happy for what I did for the team. There were a lot of great things. Running the ball like crazy as we did.”
He remembered his time in Jacksonville fondly.
“My first year, we gave up the fewest franchise sacks (28). Rushing aganst the Colts, 375 yards (2006), last year coming back when people counted me out. Three games in a row, we rushed for over 200 yards. Then Mojo [Jones-Drew] the eight games I played with him, he rushed over a thousand.
“When I played there were a lot of great things. My first year, Fred had the best rushing year out of all the years he’s been playing. Almost 1,600 yards (1,572). My fourth year (2006), we broke the franchise record with 2,500 yards (2,541). All those things come to mind as far as playing for this team. When you get released, you remember all those things.”
Injuries started to mount for Manuwai. In 2008, he suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament in the season opener at Tennessee and missed the season.
In 2010, he missed five games with a back injury.
The Falcons plan to have open competitions at all of their offensive line spots. Manuwai would figure to have a shot at winning the starting right guard spot if he’s fully recovered and can reclaim his skill level.
Last season, the Falcons mainly used Garrett Reynolds and Joe Hawley at right guard. Also, Mike Johnson, who missed most of last season with a foot injury, will compete for the spot.
Manuwai played under current Falcons offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter for four seasons from 2007 to 2010 when Koetter served as the Jaguars offensive coordinator. In 2007, the team posted 5,719 yards of total offense and 357.4 yards per game, which were both the second-highest totals in team history.
While under Koetter, Manuwai helped the Jaguars establish one of the league’s most consistent running games averaging 4.5 yards per carry and 134.2 yards per game on the ground.

Nope, they are going fishing like they did in 2008 when picked up Dahl (who was cast off by San Diego). They are hoping that lightning strikes twice… It may also mean that all of you wishing for big name cast-offs from more big name UFAs might be out of luck…
Again I ask if they are going to keep taking risk with injured players?

This is a very SOLID sign. The Falcons probably got him rather inexpensive this year. Dahl was 308….Manuawi is 330….thats a lot for a DL to try to get around. I feel bad for the LB’s in the NFC South that will try to run up on him. so far it seems the Falcons are being very strategic as usual. smgdh!

Simple, you got beat by better teams…
Eli Manning, Aaron Rodgers, and Kurt Warner are better than Matt Ryan…
The Giants, Packers, and Cardinals O-Line & D-Line were better than the Falcons…
Larry Fitzgerald is better than Roddy White…
James Jones is better Roddy White…
Everybody is better than Thomas DeCoud…
Michael Boley and Clay Matthews are better than Lofton & Weatherspoon…
and
Tom Coughlin, Mike McCartney, and Ken Whisenhutt are better playoff game day coaches than Mike Smith!

I just read that he was a great pass protect in college and then he help pave the way for Maurice Drew and Fred Taylor. I am thinking this a sign for all those that wanted Nicks and Grubbs that they just filled their Guard need and give the younger Guards on the team time to develop. With Tatupo and Crowder as possible LB replacements. This should be a definite sign that they plan on going after Mario Williams on Tuesday. Would still like to see the upgrade their LT with Levi Brown or Jared Gaither.

Good signing. The Falcons are hoping one of the young guys will seize the RG postion but this moves provides a nice backup plan from a solid veteran who has good upside if the knee is healthy. Bonus points because he has a chip on his shoulder and something to prove after missing last season. This could be a shrewd move if that proves out and came at a cheap price. I really think they are going after Mario hard and this move is working towards that imo.

I’m not getting overly excited. It may pan out to be a good move but this 31 year old has been injured often and in 2010 he wasn’t a starter until Justin Smiley got hurt. Maybe having a year off he has gotten his injury bug behind him.

I know this has Dirk Koetter written all over it. I don’t think this is a bad signing however, he’ll be an improvement over Reynolds! Still..I have to ask…what Is our infatuation with the Jacksonville Jaguars? Also I take this as a sign that we won’t pursue Nicks but will go after Super Mario. Injuries or not that guy is a beast and I bet he can produce a steady pass rush here and maybe Ray Edwards will follow his lead.

What did y’all think was going to happen, we got an ex jag for a head coach, an ex jag for an offensive coordinator no duh we’re going to have ex jag players all up through here. Let’s see how much they paid him, but it looks like a good move. They should have got him cheap and he has great upside plus he’ll compete with the other’s and hopefully bring everyone’s level of play up because someone is gonna end up getting cut before the start of the season.
Besides, there was no way we were going to get Nicks and Mario and Keep Lofton or Abe. So now it’s down to 3. Plus, they look like they’re preparing for life without Lofton so it’s really down to 2. I’m not really to upset about loosing lofton. He’s a good tackler but his pass coverage is not great. Plus he just doesn’t have a mean streak in him. Nobody’s scared of him. Plus our run defense struggled down the stretch last season with him in the lineup so maybe he isn’t the key to the LBs

Finally, that OG position needs to be someone that is squatty with some girth and some strength- You cant line up against 350 pound defensive tackles and gain any traction- i.e. Garrett (Where’s the Gym) Reynolds, Joe (Just got my AS* Jacked) Hawley about 3 feet in the air- Sam (Can you find me any good HGH?) Baker-
You wonder why dudes in the NFL take Human Growth Hormone- Take one look at Joe, Garrett, and Sam getting completely man handled play after play- That’s why they took it-
My personal belief and only my gut is that you saw Sam or some of these guys ween themselves off the HGH- They look like totally different players last year when they annouced there would be HGH testing- All of sudden Sam is hurt all of the time and is getting man handled- i.e (of not been on human growth hormone)
Marcus Mcneil now and maybe some other tackle or guard-
We get this line and Defensive line suited up and nasty we will win the NFC South

Thought folks were just being a smarta$$ when they put “enter your coments here”, but I wsee a premature enter push does it!!!
Anyway – a quick class for all the brainiacs that critisize every move:
There are 32 teams in the NFL – so the Falcons aren’t the only ones looking to pick up talent. There is this thing called the salary cap – it prevents any team (including Falcons) from spending whatever they want to in the event they wanted to. If you don’t take chances on players returning from some sort of injury, your free agent pool will be pretty dang small – most NFL players that have been around for any length of time would have suffered a fairly substantial injury.
So please leave the real thinking to the ones that are in charge. The same ones complaining about this pick up are the same ones that at the start of the 2008 season if we’d make the playoffs 3 of the next 4 years and have a winning season all 4 – they’d be more than happy. Well, it’s happened, so remember back to what you said 4 years ago. In 1998, the Birds had one flukish season, then went into hibernation for a decade. This regime is trying to build a team that is in it year after year – it isn’t quite as easy as some of you think.
GO FALCONS!!!

My guess is Vince wouldn’t make much of a swim suit model. OK by me, we don’t need swim suit models. We need guys that can move the pile on forth and one. Mr. Manuwai looks like he could move Stone Mountain a yard or two. He didn’t play last year. It seems he showed up after the lockout hurt and out of shape. If he’s serious about playing, this could be a bigger addition than it might seem at first glance. He’s only thirty-one. For a guard that’s still a baby. A lot of Pacific islanders have big problems keeping their weight in check. This seems to be Manuwai’s problem. If we can keep him from free basing cheese burgers, we might have ourselves a keeper. Don’t be surprised if he has a weight clause written into his contract.

I agree with Joe Tess Fish House. This guy was cut in July 2010, and didn’t even play last year. No one even picked him up for their practice squad. So why should we care? Is TD such a great judge of talent that every other GM in the NFL missed this guy? (For the answer, just consult TD’s fine work on the $57 million right corner position.)

The Falcons will never get any better by continuing hire second rate players and coaches from the Jaguars. We can now say that the Falcons are the new Atlanta Hawks without a bad owner.

The Falcons have agreed to terms with free agent middle linebacker Lofa Tatupu, formerly of the Seahawks. Tatupu is a three-time Pro Bowl selection. What do you think of the addition? Details here: http://atlfal.co.nz/y3EfCU

Lets see, this is the second FA sign who did not play a down in 2011?
This is two hope upon a prayer moves. (Tatupu and now Manuawi).
I will believe in it if and when I see it. And don’t give me this low risk high reward, because the hot seat year is now & if these guys do not pan out and get cut, guess what, the 2012 Falcons are not likely to improve over last yrs team.
Good luck to the guys, I hope they are okay but……that is a long line of injuries.
Would have loved to have Vince 4, 5 yrs ago.

After reading all the other blogs, I say give this guy a chance. But the disturbing thing here is the Falcons resigned De-who, Decloud. What in the world do the Falcons see in this guy nthat so many of us are missing? to me this is a terrrible signing but a signing at the basement bargain level. Look for more passes down the middle of the field this year and fans asking where was or where is the free safety.

Looks like TD is playing a little “Moneyball” here. We are getting two players who are undervalued based on injuries. While we may not have a linebacker who is as good as Lofton we will have a better overall group. Makes small dollars go a long way. Kudos to Dunta!
