Atlanta Falcons: Here’s the offseason depth chart

The Falcons sent out their 2011 season in review on Tuesday, which included the unofficial depth chart.

Here are some of the nuggets from the review and I take a little stab at how the offseason depth chart looks with 17 prospective unrestricted free agents.

–Under head coach Mike Smith, the Falcons have posted 10-or-more wins and earned playoff berths in three of the last four seasons. Smith is the first coach in franchise history to post multiple 10-win seasons and his 43-21 overall record is the best four-year mark in club history.

–in 2011, the Falcons set a franchise record for most total net yards gained in a season with 6,026 yards. The Falcons broke the record that was set by the 2008 squad, which posted 5,779 total yards.

–Quarterback Matt Ryan broke the franchise record for passing yards in a single season with 4,177 yards passing. Ryan broke QB Jeff George’s club record of 4,143 yards set in 1995.

–Ryan also set a franchise mark for 300-yard passing games in a season with six.

–Wide receiver Roddy White became the Falcons all-time leading receiver. His 7,374 career receiving yards, broke Terance Mathis’ franchise record of 7,349 receiving yards set between 1994 and 2001.

–White finished the season with 100 receptions for 1,296 yards and became the first player in team history to record multiple 100-catch seasons.

–Running back Michael Turner broke the franchise record for career rushing touchdowns when he scored his 49th today against in a Week 17 win over Tampa Bay. Running back Gerald Riggs’ old record of 48 set between 1982 and 1988.

–Tight end Tony Gonzalez became the NFL’s second all-time leading receiver with his 1,149 career receptions and ranks 11th in league history with 13,338 receiving yards.

interesting..I can’t see C. Lofton being gone…might be chance to see if we have the resolve like the PIT Steelers did in the late 90s/early 2000s when they had FA after FA leave and still be viable.

–in 2011, the Falcons set a franchise record for most total net yards gained in a season with 6,026 yards. The Falcons broke the record that was set by the 2008 squad, which posted 5,779 total yards.

–in 2011, the Falcons scored 2 points in the playoff game against the New York Giants. The 2 points were scored by the defense.

Let some of the worn out players on offense GO. The Falcons have not won a playoff game with this set of offensive players in four years; namely Michael Turner and other players who are mainly blockers at running back and tight end. The Falcons’ have not won with them so continuing with the same player philosophy is misguided. Gaining yards means nothing if points are not scored.

I just read another article on the AJC talking about Michael Turner. Looks like he’s becoming another one of those professional athletes who feels justified having baby mommas. One woman already has two of his kids – WITH A THIRD ON THE WAY – but he’s got a different girlfriend! And he refuses to see those kids he has!

Is Mr. Blank going to kick his low-life butt to the curb? Is this what the Falcons players represent – seeing how many baby mommas they can get?

Nothing like seeing it in black and white and finally see all of the name callers and apologists see what others have been saying was going to happen come to fruition! And between now and March 12th, Alice has too stop peering down the Rabbit hole and face the future.

@ Ledbetter…
I’ve seen some numbers thrown around for available cap numbers. However, now that the Chiefs and Browns set the floors for UFA corners and middle linebackers; what numbers are realistic for the Falcons to have out there in marketplace for the individual areas? Not the overall cap pool, but like $7.7 million paid for the single year to Gonzalez… Are they going to be low ballin’ players? They have the rookie spots against the cap (while not guaranteed, they still must be accounted for against the cap), and then some real crazy talk about extending Ryan. So what is the real deal? Will March 12th be like the Bataan Death March for the veteran UFAs on this roster? Have you spoken to Petersen? How is his rehab going?

Poor Michael Turner, just put one of the “ladies” on ‘real housewives of the ATL’ and put a blonde wig on her. The holier than bunch will hush then, I mean it worked for Bierman for two years… Better yet, go down to Disney and see the Overlord of Hooters, he’s bound to be able to give you some of his kryptonite! Maybe they’ll put a statue up to you too, they’ll be doing it for Chipper with no problem!

Falcons need to draft Cody Fleener, Stanford TE Nick Perry USC, DE Cordy Glenn UGA, OT or Matt Kalil USC OT Mychal Kendricks CAL, LB Stephen Hill GT, WR Dontari Poe Memphis, DT if the falcons can draft at leat 3 of these players we will be in the superbowl

FALCONS please draft one of these running backs

Chris Rainey, RB Florida- great change of pace running back and can catch the ball well and could help out in the return game

LaMichael James, RB Oregon- SPEED great for the screen game can take a 5 yard screen for 80 yards Touchdown.

David Wilson, RB Virginia Tech- can do it all run, catch, and block not as fast 4.4 or 4.5 but can play every down.

Right…Falcons better get to signing these players. Priority signings (order of priority):

Curtis Lofton
Brent Grimes
Harry Douglas
Jason Snelling
Thomas DeCoud

I acutally think that if you sign James Sanders you could play with signing DeCoud. Lets face it…#28 is a step slow to play center field. Here are questions for you DOL:

What is the vibe with resigning Snelling? Is this important to the Falcons?
What position will be our big free agent signing this year?
Who is the new defensive coordinator most impressed with on the defense?
Will there be a totally new, revamped playbook or merely alterations to the exisiting?

Let us know when you can team.

I couldn’t agree more, We need Harry back!!! Harry, Lofton, Sanders,Hayden, Redman, & either Abe or Biermann. I’d let the rest walk, but the front office seems to want Grimes back, I’d want Peterson back as well if he’ll help when we go to the 3-4 looks, but i don’t know if they want both him & Crowder who I believe we’ll pick up. We should let alot of these ppl walk, Nolan will bring in some of his FA’s from Miami & other players he’s coached over the years, I’d also like to see us bring in LeRon Landry at FS, Marcus McNiel at LT, & Martellus Bennett. Gotta disagree with you on that one D-Led, he talks but way less than Roddy does & he’s “underproduced” because he was the back up to a pro-bowl TE in light of that I think he’s put up good #’s & the Cowboys we’re really high onn him going into last year, where again he’s “underproduced” because of the QB play there, or should I say lack their of! Getting him frees us up at # 2 & 3 to go DE & O-line like we need to do!

I do like Sidbury however. He’s shown some flashes of brilliance. Just needs to be given the chance. I hate to say it, but I think it’s time for McClure to go. We can draft Ben Jones to replace him day 1. I think Mike Johnson at RG would be huge. I mean the guy started 50 something games at Alabama so he can play.

Seriously?? Can’t have Shann start at FS..nor have Meier as the slot. Meier has not recovered from his ACL injury ( if he ever will) DLED you just placed all the second/third string guys into a first string spot..not really making a depth chart here. Placing Matthews as a starter?? 7th rounder who was basically on the practice squad..non-active for the entire season is now a starter in your mind? To gain more space the Falcons will cut Baker, Perry, DeCloud (maybe), tag Grimes, 4 year deal with Lofton, cute Abe ( age and 9.5 sacks is very clouded because he had 3.5 in one game) But it this way, the Saints Roman Harper would have had more sacks than Abe if Jacksonville’s line wasn’t so bad….and please smack Kroy and tell him to play football. He was supposed to be this tough, high motor guy from Montana but since he married a Atalnta reality star he’s gone soft….just the truth on how the fans see it.

Biermann is a tough high motor guy from Montana. He was a late round pick. They are getting great value out of him in the rotation. He’s not a starter. He’s just not capable of makeing more than 2 or 3 plays a year.

@ PMC…
I can’t say he’s the “new Laurent Robinson.” Smith and Dimitroff straight blackballed Robinson… He played into the bad habits in St. Louis and in the pre-season camp in San Diego. That was ugly; glad he finally found a QB and staff that gets him the ball…

JSS — 1. Cap has not been set. Could even be lower that last season. 2. Falcons are not followig the market. They are staying “fiscally responsible” and don’t plan to over pay for players. 3. You have the wrong number Gonzalez. His getting $6.9. 4. Ryan’s extension will not happen until Nov or Oct at the earliest. March 12th could be real ugly. Abe’s practically out the door and headed to free agency. Maybe if there are no major takers, he crawls back (Snelling). 5. Peterson’s rehab is going along well. TD told me they’d like to have him back.

It’s time to get rid of M. Turner. Did you’ll hear about the baby mama drama? Turners poppin em out (3) and has a girlfriend who got into it with the baby momma on his front lawn. Do the Falcons really need another distracted player for the title run in 2013? That goes 4 u too, Roddy.

It sure would be nice to see Sidbury have the break out year for which he has been developed. He might be ready and he might be better than any other draft choices available at this point!

I’d also like to see what Sam Baker can do when he is healthy. I really hope that he has been able to recover and rehab during the off-season. I am also anxious to see if Peria Jerry can continue his recovery/rehab to the point where he is back to 100%. These two great athletes could make a real difference if they recover. These will be interesting to watch going forward and could be a nice surprise for them and for the Falcons.
