Report: Falcons show interest in Stephen Garcia

Stephen Garcia, the disgraced quarterback formerly of South Carolina, is trying to make the leap to the NFL has talked to a scout from the Falcons, according to a report from Aaron Wilson of scout.com.

Garcia was dismissed from the South Carolina football program last season for drinking after five prior suspensions. Because of his checkered past, he doesn’t seem to fit the prototype of the players the Falcons have signed under general manager Thomas Dimitroff.

During after a all-star game in Florida, Garcia talked with a scout from the Falcons as well as several other teams.

During his conversation with the Falcons scout, all of Garcia’s transgressions at South Carolina were discussed. And Garcia said he didn’t leave anything out, to the scout’s approval

“I went down the list and he said he appreciated the honesty,” Garcia said. “He told me to stay on that track, and I will. I just wish I had changed earlier. I didn’t fully understand until it was too late.”

Garcia is contending that he has changed his destructive behavior.

“I’ve learned how immature I really was. I just didn’t know exactly how important everything was until after I made all of those mistakes. I was trying to be like every other college kid, but you can’t do that as a starting quarterback for an SEC team. Looking back, it sucks. I have nobody to blame but myself.”

Garcia, 24, has a four-year-old son.

Garcia, of Lutz, Fla., recently played in one of the eight regional combines attempting to qualify for the NFL super regional combine on March 30 at Ford Field in Detroit. He was not invited to the NFL scouting combine, which starts today.

The Atlanta regional combine is set for March 10 and 11.

Garcia also told scout.com that South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier is going to allow him to participate in the Gamecocks’ Pro Day on March 28.

Garcia led the Gamecocks to a SEC Eastern division title as a junior and went 20-14 as a starter overall, passing for 7,597 career yards, 47 touchdowns, 41 interceptions and rushed for 777 yards and 15 touchdowns.

Behind starting quarterback Matt Ryan, the Falcons have Chris Redman, who is set to become a free agent at 3 p.m. on March 13, and John Parker Wilson, who was promoted to the active roster late last season when the Minnesota Vikings tried to sign him off the practice squad.

Makes sense, we need someone to fill Eugene Robinson’s shoes.

Upgrade from Redman’s pedestrian skills on the field. Off the field hopefully he has learned.

it’s very convenient that he says he has learned from his mistakes now that he is out of football and just hoping to get a shot with any team. the Falcons would be better off looking elsewhere. he was only a decent QB when playing for SC. i would almost put money on it that if someone actually signed him, he would slide back to his old self, feeling that he was back securely in the game…

The “good-guys” ain’t working so maybe having someone with an edge will shake things up. Next lets bring in a new coach.

If we need to go after any quarterback it should be Cousins.

Please stop judging this guy and none of us really know him or what happened. We need a backup QB and it is important too get one. We all have made mistakes in our lives and someone showed us grace

@Loafer- I agree. We need a new personality because the good-guy coach with good character players only just cost me another $1600 without a playoff win

Even if Garcia was squeaky clean i’m not sure why we would want him. He isn’t very good.

NO – Garcia is a mess and we don’t need a mess. He needs to go play in Oakland.

We’re done if Rayn gets hurt anyway, so he’s simply a cheaper backup. That’s fine, save where you can and spend where you must.

@Fan it has nothing to do with his personal life it is his play on the field that should make them not want him.

I’m simply glad we’re evaluating the qb position. Some people act as though the qb positions (starting & backup) are okay. The qb posItions in Atlanta is the elephant in the room that no one wants to talk about. Matt has not turned the post season corner, despite his so called impressive stats. We should look at backup qbs that are good enough to start. Not qbs that make Matt the Stat feel comfortable in his position.

they are just looking at him, better to look at him and eliminate him than to not look at him and discover he actuallycan play…alla Jeremy Lin

The only change that would matter w/ Garcia is if he changed and became a good football player. Actually it would be hilarious to have him on the team though. JPW and Garcia as our backup QBs would just make me chuckle.

If he had played for UGA, he would not have lasted as long on the team, as he did at SC, Coach MR would have got rid of him long before anyone else in the SEC would.

I’m not sure a conversation with a scout qualifies as “showing interest”. The Falcons had a scout at the event and he talked to Garcia. Not a story.

Does it really matter? If Israel attacks Iran (expected to happen this fall), and Iran nukes back, WWIII begins… Christians are raptured out – we won’t even be here for football season. But yea let’s stress about the season that won’t happen.

What interest me is the fact that Bill Musgrave came down from the vikings and tried to sign JP4 off the practice squad. hmmm. Never been crazy about JP4 because i really want the falcons to take someone like a kellen moore late so we can have a decent backup like we did in schuab,

who cares? I am type of daring, sign him if you want him…he might be good or better than Matt Ryan you know? Matt Ryan will be free agent when his contract runs out. We’ll deal with problem with Garcia might bring when time comes and i think he realizes he got 4 yr old son everything in the world means to him so give a young man a chance bring him and let see from there….Come on ppl..falcon lovers.

John Parker Wilson, Stephen Garcia, what is next, David Greene is coming out of retirement? It would be different if those guys had some real “NFL” level talent, they don’t… Shockey, Jackson, and Clausen (those of their ilk) don’t have any NFL talent either… My goodness, this is horrible!

One would hope that the birth of his son would have matured him but I guess not. If it takes getting kicked off of a stupid football team to get through to this guy he is a total clown. Oh wait, he is a total clown.

Thanks.

“I was trying to be like every other college kid, but you can’t do that as a starting quarterback for an SEC team.”

Not exactly true…take Zach Mettenberger for example. LSU seems to think drunken transgressions (i.e. sexual deviancy) can be ignored as long as you can throw the ball through a brick wall.

@Mike
1. Isreal does not have the military capability to launch a long range bomber attack on Iran. Iran is too far away for their bombers to go there and back plus defend against the Iranian air force.
2. Iran will not have the capacity to launch a missle attack by the fall.
3. If this happened, Rodger GODell would fine them so much money their people would eat beans and rice into the next century.
