MAYOCK: Tech’s Stephen Hill is a fourth-rounder

Georgia Tech wide receiver Stephen Hill, who has a fourth-round grade from NFL Network draft analyst Mike Mayock, will need to run a super-fast 40-yard dash at the NFL scouting combine next week.

“It will be interesting to see how fast he is,” Mayock said. “He’s a big kid. I think he was listed about 6-4, 205. I’ll be interested to see how he runs. That will determine where he goes.”

While Hill is athletic and has great jumping ability, the concern is that he will not able to separate for speedy NFL defensive backs.

His 29.3 yards-per-catch average on 28 catches last season was the highest rate in FBS. His career average — 25.5 yards on 49 catches — would have broken the school record had he made one more reception to qualify for consideration. But he also dropped passes he should have caught and could well have improved his stock with a solid 2012 season.

There will be some receiver hungry teams (StL) that will snatch him up before the 4th.

Blue Fender – Throw Jacksonville, Cleveland and New England into that receiver hungry group.

If Harry Douglas leaves, we might be feeling a bit receiver-hungry in the later rounds.

I don’t understand all of the high praise for Stephen Hill. Yes, he is an interesting physical specimen, but the guy had more drops than catches his sophomore year. He certainly dropped quite a few his junior year as well (remember that pulled hammy that “distracted him”). If I am drafting a WR, I don’t want one with questionable hands, and Hill has the most questionable hands of any receiver coming out in recent memory.

@Pound Puppies, I am a Tech fan, and I am telling you that Stephen Hill is a prospect to be examined closely before drafting.

Interesting statement, Pound Puppies, because I am actually a student at Georgia Tech, and I witnessed Stephen Hill play firsthand for the past three years. All of the attention Stephen Hill is receiving has become a bit of a joke, as anyone who has watched his highlights AND lowlights can tell you that he has a long way to go before he could ever become an NFL wide receiver. Have you ever watched Stephen Hill play?
