Roddy White’s tweets about Goodell’s salary go viral
Falcons wide receiver Roddy White will probably do a flip when he finds out that he won't be fined for his comments about commissioner Roger Goodell's salary.
Falcons wide receiver Roddy White’s tweet about NFL commissioner Roger Goodell’s salary caused a firestorm nationally.
On Monday, White, who goes by @RoddyWhiteTV on Twitter.com, sent out a tweet with a link to a ProFootballTalk.com note which referenced the Sports Business Journal’s report on Goodell’s pending salary increase.
White’s tweet: “Roger Goodell is getting over never seen anything like it 20 million for looking over the league with tremendous help I guess the NFL is banking. The NFL is not a company it’s a nonprofit organization that makes a lot of profit.”
The commentators on ESPN’s Around the Horn fired some shots at White. Bill Plaschke pointed out that Goodell is the most powerful man in sports. Tim Cowlishaw ripped White and noted that he led the league in drops last season. (He also led the league in receptions in 2010.)
On Pardon the Interruption, Tony Kornheiser stated that the Goodell was worth every penny of his salary.
“I hope he saves his money,” Kornheiser said of White. “He’s probably not going to rise in the hierarchy of the league office at this point. Players come and go. People root for the uniform. That’s the way it works in the NFL.”
Kornheiser’s partner, Michael Wilbon basically described the NFL player as highly-paid help.
“While he makes a lot of money, the people who make the most money in the United States of America, they don’t run, tackle or throw or block,” Wilbon said. “They don’t dribble. They don’t switch hit. . . .they are making decisions [while] sitting in a office in a suit. Roddy White. . . what he doesn’t understand is that all of those guys make a hell of lot more money than he does for a lot longer time. He doesn’t get that.”
White didn’t buy the argument that the decision-makers are worthy of such high salaries after one of his followers made that point.
“Thats the stupidest thing i have ever heard the players make this league dont ever forget that,” White wrote.
White, who was in Chicago on Tuesday celebrating Valentine’s Day with his girlfriend, didn’t want his tweets to go published for fear of being fined. Other players who have been critical of Goodell have not been fined, but Pittsburgh’s James Harrison apologized after calling Goodell “the devil” in a magazine article.
NFL spokeman Greg Aiello, in an e-mail to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, wrote that White could not be fined.
White signed a six-year, $50 million extension with the Falcons in 2009.

I find it apalling how Roddy thinks that people who “run, tackle or throw or block” are entitled to that kind of money, yet those of us who “don’t run, tackle or throw or block” are apparently second class citizens. NO ATHLETE, or any one in the business called “sport” is worth that kind of money. Those of us who are not athletes at least are able to contribute some kind of skills to society as a whole, where as those who only know how to “run, tackle or throw or block”, as a rule, don’t contribute at all. Thank you Mr. White for making me see the light! I am seriously dropping all affiliations with professional sports since those people are not appreciative of my skill set!!

Memo to Roddy…..you need to play better, to include catching passes that hit you in the hands. Goodell will still be the commish long after your average career is over. Forgot to mention….my fondest memory of Roddy was a few years ago when we were playing Denver in the Dome. We were down by a few points late in the 4th quarter and Ryan threw the ball deep to Roddy. The ball bounced off of Roddy’s facemask in the endzone and we lost the game. Kinda reminded me of when I play catch with my 5 year old and he loses sight of the ball. The only difference is my 5 year old attends kindergarden for a living and Roddy makes millions. Second memo to Roddy – shut up and concentrate on your game.

Roddy has obviously never run a business before. Ignorance is the operative word here for Roddy. If Goodell was not so sucessful at keeping the NFL as the most popular sporting event in the US, than Roddy wouldn’t have his 6 year $50 million dollar deal. It’s simple economics. Obviously, Roddy didn’t pay attention in his economics class. He comes accross as highly uneducated. The players, the commissioner, the oweners and most importantly the customers aka the fans are what makes this business so succesfull. He just needs to read a book or two.

Roddy is one of the best blocking wide receivers in the league. That being said he also missed on some critical plays. But none of that really matters cause 6 months ago all of you were on the greatest show on turf band wagon. So quit being hypocrites and let roddy be roddy. For all of you that are giving Goodell credit for the success of the NFL please remember that the decisions on merchandising and TV contracts which bring in the vast majority of the revenue that the NFL enjoys is decided on by the owners themselves and not the commissioner. Goodell’s job is to handle the day to day operation of the league such as stadium operations and give advise to owners on what he thinks the contracts are worth so I think that $20 million is too much for a commissioner but if he was the one solely negotiating these deals then I would say he was worth the money but for his current role $10 million should be the going rate and before any of you accuse me of being a player lover I think that DeMaurice Smith makes too much as the union leader also.

With his drops, Mr White still was second in the league in receptions (1st last year) and another pro-bowl year. If Mr. White had not dropped a ball, Mr. Ryan would have been about 10th best in the league (avg QB stat). Mr. White is not the Falcons problem, Mr Ryan owns that title…

Goodell presents his proposals to them but, for the most part, they rubber stamp whatever it is he wants because HE IS PRINTING MONEY FOR THEM !!! Get a grip. It’s not called being a bad fan it’s called “this is a crappy town for sports”. Wanna know why this town can’t seem to get a consistent fan base (other than it is a HUGE transient city)??? @coach13 and I totally agree with you about our teams NEVER being consistent. but the personality of this city has gotten extremely spoiled. Braves went to the playoffs for years, noone showed up in the first couple of rounds unless they made the world series. it’s the spoiled culture of Atlanta, with nothing to be spoiled over. this is a great city for sports, we have just had terrible decision makers that were more interested in profit than putting forth a winning product. you saw what happened when Ted sold the Braves. and I GUARANTEE if I were in Goddell’s shoes I could run the NFL just as well if not better. He has degrees, so do I. I played football, but wait…did he?

Okay, let’s get this straight.
EVERYONE in the NFL is overpaid. Who among us wouldn’t play in the NFL for our regular salary just to live the dream?
White is another idiot jock who thinks the entire world centers around their stardom. Worse, he doesn’t even play a skill position that requires that much of a brain. Everyone knows that wide receivers are dumb, but White is a walking stereotype. I’d be interested to know if he thinks he is more valuable than a good lineman since they never score touchdowns. It would be pretty consistent with some of the idiot ’star players’ I’ve been around in football.
Goddell is another stuffed-shirt cookie-cutter executive who just doesn’t get the ‘little people’ beneath him, who in this case, are actually jocks that will push back, rather than take it like most of us have to do in our careers. The league could function just fine without him. He is ruining the game by fining people for solid hits, refusing to take care of injured veterans, and generally being clueless towards the public. He might be an even worse commissioner than Bud Selig and that’s hard to pull off. He certainly isn’t worth 20 million.

I am a die hard football fan, played growing up, but I am sick and tired of society today that trashes the brains of the operation, and the fact that people like Roddy White and Kim Kardashian can make millions upon millions, and still have beef with people like Goodell that make it possible for football to even be on the level it is, and so Roddy White can make his millions. Only added Kardashian because she is someone that makes a ton of money for having no talents or intelligence at all, and that there is someone else behind the scenes making it all possible. We all know this moron and half of the other dumb rocks in the league couldn’t make the NFL run, or couldn’t cut it in the real world. The problem here is that Roddy is doing what we all do so much when discussing pro athletes…. discussing salary. It’s really not relevant. The league is compensating him how they want to compensate him, I don’t begrudge Goodell anymore than I would begrudge Roddy for earning all they can. It’s a different skill set, but it’s a skill set all the same.
There is only one pro football commish and he’s leading an incredibly prosperous league, so he gets the bennies.
Roddy, is one of the best receivers in the league so he gets the bennies, that’s about the end of it.
Much like in baseball, if you’re leading the league in drops or losses, you must be doing something else very very right.

Roddy will be fine. Coach Smith and Mr. Blank plus maybe someone whom he really respects in the locker room will pull him aside and try to make him understand that he is well liked in Atlanta and around the league, but the comments should be kept in-house.
I think Roddy seems to like Larry Fitzgerald-maybe he should step back and look at how he is conducting himself?
If Roddy turns into a person like Randy Moss or Terrell Owens, someday his co-workers, bosses and fans will lose respect for him. He needs to produce at a higher level and just play the game. The accololades will come to him if he does.

Roddy caught a lot more passes (and dropped less) before his last contract. Kinda like I got more wins at Tech before my last contract.

Bottom line: It is not really smart to openly badmouth the administration. There will be payback at some time. Roddy is a very talented athlete. I appreciate his blocking. Yes he drops a few but still a pretty damn good receiver. With that said, shut your pie hole and play football. Your tweets only bring discredit to the Falcons.

Roddy needs to focus on not dropping balls, this clown has become a mini-T.O. Six years from now you will be reading about him being some loud mouth broke punk living in a slum…..he cost us too many games last year and continued to argue with refs, coaches and players on the bench all season long…..we should trade him for MJ in Detroit, that guy is a class act and how you should represent the league….
