Roddy White’s tweets about Goodell’s salary go viral

Falcons wide receiver Roddy White will probably do a flip when he finds out that he won't be fined for his comments about commissioner Roger Goodell's salary.

Falcons wide receiver Roddy White will probably do a flip when he finds out that he won't be fined for his comments about commissioner Roger Goodell's salary.

Falcons wide receiver Roddy White’s tweet about NFL commissioner Roger Goodell’s salary caused a firestorm nationally.

On Monday, White, who goes by @RoddyWhiteTV on Twitter.com, sent out a tweet with a link to a ProFootballTalk.com note which referenced the Sports Business Journal’s report on Goodell’s pending salary increase.

White’s tweet: “Roger Goodell is getting over never seen anything like it 20 million for looking over the league with tremendous help I guess the NFL is banking. The NFL is not a company it’s a nonprofit organization that makes a lot of profit.”

The commentators on ESPN’s Around the Horn fired some shots at White. Bill Plaschke pointed out that Goodell is the most powerful man in sports. Tim Cowlishaw ripped White and noted that he led the league in drops last season. (He also led the league in receptions in 2010.)

On Pardon the Interruption, Tony Kornheiser stated that the Goodell was worth every penny of his salary.

“I hope he saves his money,” Kornheiser said of White. “He’s probably not going to rise in the hierarchy of the league office at this point. Players come and go. People root for the uniform. That’s the way it works in the NFL.”

Kornheiser’s partner, Michael Wilbon basically described the NFL player as highly-paid help.

“While he makes a lot of money, the people who make the most money in the United States of America, they don’t run, tackle or throw or block,” Wilbon said. “They don’t dribble. They don’t switch hit. . . .they are making decisions [while] sitting in a office in a suit. Roddy White. . . what he doesn’t understand is that all of those guys make a hell of lot more money than he does for a lot longer time. He doesn’t get that.”

White didn’t buy the argument that the decision-makers are worthy of such high salaries after one of his followers made that point.

“Thats the stupidest thing i have ever heard the players make this league dont ever forget that,” White wrote.

White, who was in Chicago on Tuesday celebrating Valentine’s Day with his girlfriend, didn’t want his tweets to go published for fear of being fined. Other players who have been critical of Goodell have not been fined, but Pittsburgh’s James Harrison apologized after calling Goodell “the devil” in a magazine article.

NFL spokeman Greg Aiello, in an e-mail to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, wrote that White could not be fined.

White signed a six-year, $50 million extension with the Falcons in 2009.

I find it apalling how Roddy thinks that people who “run, tackle or throw or block” are entitled to that kind of money, yet those of us who “don’t run, tackle or throw or block” are apparently second class citizens. NO ATHLETE, or any one in the business called “sport” is worth that kind of money. Those of us who are not athletes at least are able to contribute some kind of skills to society as a whole, where as those who only know how to “run, tackle or throw or block”, as a rule, don’t contribute at all. Thank you Mr. White for making me see the light! I am seriously dropping all affiliations with professional sports since those people are not appreciative of my skill set!!

White is rapidly turning in to one of those “All Mouth” and no substance. He says that the PLAYERS make the league. I say the FANS make the league.

Roddy, since you now can’t understand why Roger makes that kind of money, maybe you should now look at it from a fan’s perspective, and mine is that YOU make wayyyyyyyyyyyy too much. Check the ticket prices and shut up.

Roddy needs to be less concerned about what Goodell(or any other NFL executive) makes and more concerned with how he can help his team win a playoff game. Memo to Roddy…..you need to play better, to include catching passes that hit you in the hands. Goodell will still be the commish long after your average career is over. Stop worrying about things that you can’t control and concern yourself with things that you can control – like catching the ball that is thrown to you…

Their both overpaid. Goodell makes the game less fun to watch because all his rules try and take the pain out of the game, Roddy makes it less fun to watch because all his drops make it just painful to watch.

Forgot to mention….my fondest memory of Roddy was a few years ago when we were playing Denver in the Dome. We were down by a few points late in the 4th quarter and Ryan threw the ball deep to Roddy. The ball bounced off of Roddy’s facemask in the endzone and we lost the game. Kinda reminded me of when I play catch with my 5 year old and he loses sight of the ball. The only difference is my 5 year old attends kindergarden for a living and Roddy makes millions. Second memo to Roddy – shut up and concentrate on your game.

I like Roddy White, and he has a right to his opinion, and to say almost anything that he wants to say.
He did drop a game winning pass in the 1st saints game, and what would have been a game winning pass in the Texans game, and a pass in the 1st Tampa game, that probably would have been a game winner.

Roddy has obviously never run a business before. Ignorance is the operative word here for Roddy. If Goodell was not so sucessful at keeping the NFL as the most popular sporting event in the US, than Roddy wouldn’t have his 6 year $50 million dollar deal. It’s simple economics. Obviously, Roddy didn’t pay attention in his economics class. He comes accross as highly uneducated. The players, the commissioner, the oweners and most importantly the customers aka the fans are what makes this business so succesfull. He just needs to read a book or two.

Sam

Roddy is one of the best blocking wide receivers in the league. That being said he also missed on some critical plays. But none of that really matters cause 6 months ago all of you were on the greatest show on turf band wagon. So quit being hypocrites and let roddy be roddy. It’s nice to have an attitude from this relatively bland falcons team.

Sam, you ignorant slut. You, sir are an idiot. the NFL, like every other corporation in America where there is a hierarchy. At the top of that hierarchy is the boss. Roger Goodell is the boss. Roddy White is an underachieving and overpaid employee. He, and you, need to shut your mouths. P.S. If you read the article in SI about how Joe Horn turned around White’s career he was even more of an underachiever. Sam, we need less of Roddy White with his t-shirt supporting Mike Dick and this disrespect of his “boss”. What a loser.

For all of you that are giving Goodell credit for the success of the NFL please remember that the decisions on merchandising and TV contracts which bring in the vast majority of the revenue that the NFL enjoys is decided on by the owners themselves and not the commissioner. Goodell’s job is to handle the day to day operation of the league such as stadium operations and give advise to owners on what he thinks the contracts are worth so I think that $20 million is too much for a commissioner but if he was the one solely negotiating these deals then I would say he was worth the money but for his current role $10 million should be the going rate and before any of you accuse me of being a player lover I think that DeMaurice Smith makes too much as the union leader also.

say what?

If roddy could read perhaps someone could read $40M dollar slave. Still applies nearly twenty years later. The people in business suits will still have their money when Roddy’s career is over, and baby daddy payments, I mean child support, will be more than he is bringing in.
stop making it rain in the club, cut the entourage, curb the label spending, and invest your millions so that you can become a true high stakes player in the NFL.

Arthur B. – Actually Goodell is an employee of the league and he has to answer to all 32 owners who are his boss so the true head is the group of 32 that run all of the teams. Also please do not let Roddy’s views cloud your judgement on his on field accomplishments because he is at the top of his profession in the position that he plays and that is with the drops and all. :-)

E-Roll, do you really think that the owners of the NFL teams make day to day decisions on how to operate the league? That is preposterous. Goodell presents his proposals to them but, for the most part, they rubber stamp whatever it is he wants because HE IS PRINTING MONEY FOR THEM !!! Get a grip. Arthur Blank worries about the Atlanta Falcons and Roger Goodell is paid to look out for the league. When he makes a decision (not on a day-to-day basis) the owners are asked to approve. 99% of the time they do so but on operational issues they have no clue what is going on. Face it. Roddy White is just another receiver in a league full of receivers and he will be replaced within the next few years. He is a nobody. Meanwhile, the commissioners of the league are enduring and that is why there are so few of them, unlike wide receivers who are subject to dropping balls. Rozelle. Tagliabue and now Goodell. That is probably 30+ years of commissioners and there have been 100 average receivers like Roddy White. Give me a break you jock sniffer. P.S. for the Obama-lover. Get a life because if things continue under his watch we are all screwed. For the record, he did attend a radical church for 20 years, his policies are undoubtedly socialistic and the CBO statistics show that death panels will result because of his radical health care law. Period. End of sentence. This has nothing to do with the color of his skin but is simply because of his politics although I doubt your opinion has nothing to do with the color of his skin.

Now Roddy has zero adversion to publicizing his ingnorance (free MV thsirtt, hanging with MV during a shooting as his birthday party and on and on)indeed he is so ignorant he doesn’t even realize it hurts him. He needs to understand there are far more undereachieving wide recievers (a poistion ENORNMOUSLY overpaid based on impact) then people capable of running such and enormous enterprise. Hey boy, just shut up and keep plowing that mule.
If you could run fast, jump high, dribble, hit a small ball with a stick or hit a really small white ball with a club, you too might make millions.

I know it must hurt like a mother#$@! because the job you do can be performed by millions or a robot and thus you are angry that an uneducated (your word) man can make 50mil over a six year period
I’m an engineer and I have a cousin who made 4.5mil this past year and this was his sixth year in the league and he has probably have made more than I have in almost 33yrs. Happy for him because I can’t do what he does and their are thousands that can do what I do.

Roger is Evil, and Roddy needs to wear a condom, and work on his dropped passes. people knock Matty ICE, but he could sue for lack of support after 2011 season. i have new respect for the guy to take such a beating ans still not miss a start. Why all the vitrol pointed at Roddy? He’s right you know – do you pay good money every week to watch Roger Goodall? If it were not for the athletes would you be paying that money? Yes Goodall runs a billion dollar business but he would have no business to run if it were not for the players the fans pay good money to watch. To my way of thinking this is no different from any other business where the people who make the products (in this case the players) get short changed by the ‘job creators’ who get all the benefits. Folks get smart you are being used.

I’m not saying any of these guys are right, but it takes 3 factors to establish a working system (Owners, Players, & Fan$), it just so happens that the owners have created this bland, tasteless, and overly corporate product that is in essence only entertainment. People get your priorities in order, & find substance in yourself over the stuff you see in tv and other people’s lives… Falcons get your priorities in order too, if you ever want to be anything but mediocre, & get rid of those 2 terrible QBs (the weak emotionless one who gets frazzled & needs too much protection because he’s too scared to take a hit, and the 2nd string one who is just a plain jane uniform mannequin)

Roddy White led the league in receptions 2 out of the last 3 years and that’s still not enough for yall. Man has a right to speak his mind. Im REALLY from Atlanta, born and raised. @coach13 and I totally agree with you about our teams NEVER being consistent. but the personality of this city has gotten extremely spoiled. Braves went to the playoffs for years, noone showed up in the first couple of rounds unless they made the world series. it’s the spoiled culture of Atlanta, with nothing to be spoiled over. this is a great city for sports, we have just had terrible decision makers that were more interested in profit than putting forth a winning product. you saw what happened when Ted sold the Braves. and I GUARANTEE if I were in Goddell’s shoes I could run the NFL just as well if not better. Okay, let’s get this straight.

EVERYONE in the NFL is overpaid. Who among us wouldn’t play in the NFL for our regular salary just to live the dream?

White is another idiot jock who thinks the entire world centers around their stardom. Worse, he doesn’t even play a skill position that requires that much of a brain. Everyone knows that wide receivers are dumb, but White is a walking stereotype. I’d be interested to know if he thinks he is more valuable than a good lineman since they never score touchdowns. It would be pretty consistent with some of the idiot ’star players’ I’ve been around in football.

Goddell is another stuffed-shirt cookie-cutter executive who just doesn’t get the ‘little people’ beneath him, who in this case, are actually jocks that will push back, rather than take it like most of us have to do in our careers. The league could function just fine without him. He is ruining the game by fining people for solid hits, refusing to take care of injured veterans, and generally being clueless towards the public. He might be an even worse commissioner than Bud Selig and that’s hard to pull off. He certainly isn’t worth 20 million.

Roger Goodell is way overpaid. He is simply a manager, and not a very good one. He has an epidemic of head injuries due to coaching, yet he fines the players. Has he demanded the helmet be redesigned to absorb impact? The kick rule change is awful. Roddy is correct in his comment.

Roddy White is an idiot. He needs to shut up and do what apparently he is only half decent at, catching a football and running away from tacklers. The problem lies in the fact that maybe 10% of NFL players actually have brains and can do something besides catch, throw, run, and kick. I am a die hard football fan, played growing up, but I am sick and tired of society today that trashes the brains of the operation, and the fact that people like Roddy White and Kim Kardashian can make millions upon millions, and still have beef with people like Goodell that make it possible for football to even be on the level it is, and so Roddy White can make his millions. Only added Kardashian because she is someone that makes a ton of money for having no talents or intelligence at all, and that there is someone else behind the scenes making it all possible. We all know this moron and half of the other dumb rocks in the league couldn’t make the NFL run, or couldn’t cut it in the real world. So just shut your dang mouth and continue doing what you love for a living and collect your check. You’re not paid to run your yapper, especially about things you have no clue about.

Roddy is a fantastic WR, let’s get that strait. It’s hilarious media members would rip him for dropping passes when criticising Roger Goodells salary, that’s JUST AS STUPID and NONSENSICAL Tim Cowlishaw.

The problem here is that Roddy is doing what we all do so much when discussing pro athletes…. discussing salary. It’s really not relevant. The league is compensating him how they want to compensate him, I don’t begrudge Goodell anymore than I would begrudge Roddy for earning all they can. It’s a different skill set, but it’s a skill set all the same.

There is only one pro football commish and he’s leading an incredibly prosperous league, so he gets the bennies.

Roddy, is one of the best receivers in the league so he gets the bennies, that’s about the end of it.

Much like in baseball, if you’re leading the league in drops or losses, you must be doing something else very very right.

He’s not an idiot for expressing an opinion, he’s just not thinking broadly in his assessment.

No you guys have it all wrong ..Roddy is right , why does godall need 20 million. does he run block or catch .. does he even do accounting, how about manage personell, does he even check his email ????? someone else does all of the real things that keep the league running. Godall like everyother CEO of a very large firm .. really do nothing but set a vision, direction and tell everyone to work toward that vision. the real work is done by everyone else. Would godall be the commish if he was a women with the same attributes and skills, how about an ethnic Inuit, Or butt ugly, disfugured.. the answer is NO, so my point is its not a skill set that gets Godall the 20 million job, its some intangible equation of charisma, skin color, gender, and attractivness. So Roddy is truly right. Atheletes have a true skill and talent, which is dimishing everyyear they play. this talent pays for that 20million job. At least owners have to manage a team a make tough decisions and have real responsibility.. not the commish. Atheletes are independent contractors with a team NOT with the NFL..he can say whatever he wants about the NFL commish. he isn’t an indentured servent who can’t talk bad about “Massa” . Slaves pick the cotton but they never make more than the masters. Believe that. Roger Goodell will be sailing in the bahamas in his 70s while most of his players will have parkinsons or be long dead by then. Is it fair? Probably not. But that’s life.

Once he finishes up his career, he needs to take an English course and learn how to write coherently.

Roddy will be fine. Coach Smith and Mr. Blank plus maybe someone whom he really respects in the locker room will pull him aside and try to make him understand that he is well liked in Atlanta and around the league, but the comments should be kept in-house.

I think Roddy seems to like Larry Fitzgerald-maybe he should step back and look at how he is conducting himself?

If Roddy turns into a person like Randy Moss or Terrell Owens, someday his co-workers, bosses and fans will lose respect for him. He needs to produce at a higher level and just play the game. The accololades will come to him if he does.

Roddy as a huge fan. Just stop this nonsence and do what you are capable of doing on the field!

Roddy caught a lot more passes (and dropped less) before his last contract. Kinda like I got more wins at Tech before my last contract.

@ Ackshun

REALLY? That is a really stupid statement. NFL players CHOSE to play football. No one forced them to play. Comparing them to slaves is a real insult to real slaves. Naw your not racist are you?

I think Roddy should close his mouth and focus on catching passes.

Bottom line: It is not really smart to openly badmouth the administration. There will be payback at some time. Roddy is a very talented athlete. I appreciate his blocking. Yes he drops a few but still a pretty damn good receiver. With that said, shut your pie hole and play football. Your tweets only bring discredit to the Falcons.

Roddy might make good trade bait before he becomes a free agent.

you guys do know that JJ wasn’t brought in to compliment White don’t you? He’s here to replace him. This is not the first time he’s embarrassed AB and the management team. He’ll be traded this year.

Roddy has other concerns that he needs to concentrate on. Like “winning” a playoff game!!!!!

Here we go…”Trade our best receiver because he spoke his mind. He’s a ‘challenged soul’!” Really folks? You can talk on & on about how athletes are “overpaid,” but when an athlete opines that the commissioner is overpaid you tell him to shut up. Two words…double standard. Wow.

Roddy needs to focus on not dropping balls, this clown has become a mini-T.O. Six years from now you will be reading about him being some loud mouth broke punk living in a slum…..he cost us too many games last year and continued to argue with refs, coaches and players on the bench all season long…..we should trade him for MJ in Detroit, that guy is a class act and how you should represent the league….
