Roddy White’s tweets about Goodell’s salary go viral

Falcons wide receiver Roddy White will probably do a flip when he finds out that he won't be fined for his comments about commissioner Roger Goodell's salary.

Falcons wide receiver Roddy White will probably do a flip when he finds out that he won't be fined for his comments about commissioner Roger Goodell's salary.

Falcons wide receiver Roddy White’s tweet about NFL commissioner Roger Goodell’s salary caused a firestorm nationally.

On Monday, White, who goes by @RoddyWhiteTV on Twitter.com, sent out a tweet with a link to a ProFootballTalk.com note which referenced the Sports Business Journal’s report on Goodell’s pending salary increase.

White’s tweet: “Roger Goodell is getting over never seen anything like it 20 million for looking over the league with tremendous help I guess the NFL is banking. The NFL is not a company it’s a nonprofit organization that makes a lot of profit.”

The commentators on ESPN’s Around the Horn fired some shots at White. Bill Plaschke pointed out that Goodell is the most powerful man in sports. Tim Cowlishaw ripped White and noted that he led the league in drops last season. (He also led the league in receptions in 2010.)

On Pardon the Interruption, Tony Kornheiser stated that the Goodell was worth every penny of his salary.

“I hope he saves his money,” Kornheiser said of White. “He’s probably not going to rise in the hierarchy of the league office at this point. Players come and go. People root for the uniform. That’s the way it works in the NFL.”

Kornheiser’s partner, Michael Wilbon basically described the NFL player as highly-paid help.

“While he makes a lot of money, the people who make the most money in the United States of America, they don’t run, tackle or throw or block,” Wilbon said. “They don’t dribble. They don’t switch hit. . . .they are making decisions [while] sitting in a office in a suit. Roddy White. . . what he doesn’t understand is that all of those guys make a hell of lot more money than he does for a lot longer time. He doesn’t get that.”

White didn’t buy the argument that the decision-makers are worthy of such high salaries after one of his followers made that point.

“Thats the stupidest thing i have ever heard the players make this league dont ever forget that,” White wrote.

White, who was in Chicago on Tuesday celebrating Valentine’s Day with his girlfriend, didn’t want his tweets to go published for fear of being fined. Other players who have been critical of Goodell have not been fined, but Pittsburgh’s James Harrison apologized after calling Goodell “the devil” in a magazine article.

NFL spokeman Greg Aiello, in an e-mail to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, wrote that White could not be fined.

White signed a six-year, $50 million extension with the Falcons in 2009.

With his drops, Mr White still was second in the league in receptions (1st last year) and another pro-bowl year. If Mr. White had not dropped a ball, Mr. Ryan would have been about 10th best in the league (avg QB stat). Mr. White is not the Falcons problem, Mr Ryan owns that title…

Regarding Mr. White’s tweets… I encourage some of these blog dummies to refer to the 1st Amendment of the United States constitution. Piss on Roger and I haven’t dropped a ball!! Enough said…

E-Roll, do you really think that the owners of the NFL teams make day to day decisions on how to operate the league? That is preposterous. Goodell presents his proposals to them but, for the most part, they rubber stamp whatever it is he wants because HE IS PRINTING MONEY FOR THEM !!! Get a grip. Arthur Blank worries about the Atlanta Falcons and Roger Goodell is paid to look out for the league. When he makes a decision (not on a day-to-day basis) the owners are asked to approve. 99% of the time they do so but on operational issues they have no clue what is going on. Face it. Roddy White is just another receiver in a league full of receivers and he will be replaced within the next few years. He is a nobody. Meanwhile, the commissioners of the league are enduring and that is why there are so few of them, unlike wide receivers who are subject to dropping balls. Rozelle. Tagliabue and now Goodell. That is probably 30+ years of commissioners and there have been 100 average receivers like Roddy White. Give me a break you jock sniffer. P.S. for the Obama-lover. Get a life because if things continue under his watch we are all screwed. For the record, he did attend a radical church for 20 years, his policies are undoubtedly socialistic and the CBO statistics show that death panels will result because of his radical health care law. Period. End of sentence. This has nothing to do with the color of his skin but is simply because of his politics although I doubt your opinion has nothing to do with the color of his skin.

You know what an offseason is supposed to be about!!!!!! How about an article about that instead of this highschool pusswad garbage.

Sad but not surprising that Roddy has no clue as to why he is rich. If you can perform a valuable service better than most people you will be compensated well. Now Roddy has zero adversion to publicizing his ingnorance (free MV thsirtt, hanging with MV during a shooting as his birthday party and on and on)indeed he is so ignorant he doesn’t even realize it hurts him. He needs to understand there are far more undereachieving wide recievers (a poistion ENORNMOUSLY overpaid based on impact) then people capable of running such and enormous enterprise. He really has no clue how ignorant his tweets make him look

Dam!! All these “you need to shut up” remind me of the ’50’s and’60’s.
Hey boy, just shut up and keep plowing that mule.
If you could run fast, jump high, dribble, hit a small ball with a stick or hit a really small white ball with a club, you too might make millions.

I know it must hurt like a mother#$@! because the job you do can be performed by millions or a robot and thus you are angry that an uneducated (your word) man can make 50mil over a six year period
I’m an engineer and I have a cousin who made 4.5mil this past year and this was his sixth year in the league and he has probably have made more than I have in almost 33yrs. Happy for him because I can’t do what he does and their are thousands that can do what I do.

I’m thinking Roddy White should be more concerned about his penchant for dropping passes than what Roger Goodell earns by way of salary.

the end of the world started with social media. the beginning of the end, and the end is near. i wish the falcons would win a dang super bowl before the end. roddy just got us more holding calls against us. the falcons, like the raiders are the second most penailzed team in the nfl. somehow, the nfl needs to find a way for us to win the super bowl, just like they did with the saints. that title game in 2010 with vikings and the saints was the most rigged game i have ever seen. when you look up rigged in the dictionary, the answer says “SEE GOODELL, SEE TAPEGATE”. Roger is Evil, and Roddy needs to wear a condom, and work on his dropped passes. people knock Matty ICE, but he could sue for lack of support after 2011 season. i have new respect for the guy to take such a beating ans still not miss a start. GO FALCONS.

Why all the vitrol pointed at Roddy? He’s right you know – do you pay good money every week to watch Roger Goodall? If it were not for the athletes would you be paying that money? Yes Goodall runs a billion dollar business but he would have no business to run if it were not for the players the fans pay good money to watch. To my way of thinking this is no different from any other business where the people who make the products (in this case the players) get short changed by the ‘job creators’ who get all the benefits. Folks get smart you are being used.

I’m not saying any of these guys are right, but it takes 3 factors to establish a working system (Owners, Players, & Fan$), it just so happens that the owners have created this bland, tasteless, and overly corporate product that is in essence only entertainment. People get your priorities in order, & find substance in yourself over the stuff you see in tv and other people’s lives… Falcons get your priorities in order too, if you ever want to be anything but mediocre, & get rid of those 2 terrible QBs (the weak emotionless one who gets frazzled & needs too much protection because he’s too scared to take a hit, and the 2nd string one who is just a plain jane uniform mannequin)

I thought this was America. Why is it that when someone voices his opinion, it becomes such a big deal. If RW feels that way, then so be it. In my opinion, the players do make the game. With out the players there would be no football. I don’t see suits running around on the field making touchdowns. I don’t see suits destroying their bodies for fans’ entertainment. Think the media needs to get a grip!

What is the big deal…we live in an age where someone’s opinion is not valued even if we do not agree with it. Are we so conditioned by futurist NEW WORLD ORDER types like that overpaid attorney Roger Goodell that we are afraid of a NFL player giving his opinion publicly. If that is the case Roddy White is not just a paid player but a slave. And where in the HELL do these vastly overpaid uneducated sports writers who make a lot of money doing nothing but pontificating about a hobby for most of us (watching sports) when teachers & others who help students (those of us with REAL JOBS) make far less? The Sports Writers, the greats excluded like Furman Bisher & Steven A. Smith are nothing more than OVERPAID BABOONS!

Somebody explain to the righteous Roddy White, he of the dropped balls, that he is a fool. Since when does he think he has the responsiblitiy to judge and complain about someone’s salary. The Commissioner is a employee of the NFL, which is a entity formed by 32 stakeholders/owners. The owners have a comittee that is responsible for determining league officals salaries. Maybe, if Mr. White disengaged his Tweets and motormouth he’d be able to spend more time and concentration on the art of Catching the Football. selah!!!

@coach13 and I totally agree with you about our teams NEVER being consistent. but the personality of this city has gotten extremely spoiled. Braves went to the playoffs for years, noone showed up in the first couple of rounds unless they made the world series. it’s the spoiled culture of Atlanta, with nothing to be spoiled over. this is a great city for sports, we have just had terrible decision makers that were more interested in profit than putting forth a winning product. you saw what happened when Ted sold the Braves. and I GUARANTEE if I were in Goddell’s shoes I could run the NFL just as well if not better. He has degrees, so do I. I played football, but wait…did he?

Okay, let’s get this straight.

EVERYONE in the NFL is overpaid. Who among us wouldn’t play in the NFL for our regular salary just to live the dream?

White is another idiot jock who thinks the entire world centers around their stardom. Worse, he doesn’t even play a skill position that requires that much of a brain. Everyone knows that wide receivers are dumb, but White is a walking stereotype. I’d be interested to know if he thinks he is more valuable than a good lineman since they never score touchdowns. It would be pretty consistent with some of the idiot ’star players’ I’ve been around in football.

Goddell is another stuffed-shirt cookie-cutter executive who just doesn’t get the ‘little people’ beneath him, who in this case, are actually jocks that will push back, rather than take it like most of us have to do in our careers. The league could function just fine without him. He is ruining the game by fining people for solid hits, refusing to take care of injured veterans, and generally being clueless towards the public. He might be an even worse commissioner than Bud Selig and that’s hard to pull off. He certainly isn’t worth 20 million.

Roger Goodell is way overpaid. He is simply a manager, and not a very good one. He has an epidemic of head injuries due to coaching, yet he fines the players. Has he demanded the helmet be redesigned to absorb impact? The kick rule change is awful. Roddy is correct in his comment.
