Roddy, Randy and Julio would be unstoppable

Randy Moss has been to Flowery Branch before. In August of 2010, Moss practiced at the Branch with the New England Patriots in a joint-practice.

Even though he was a jerk and didn’t want to speak to the media, we probably should not hold that against him. Not so sure about this given the Falcons penchant to steer clear of “challenged souls,” but it could’t hurt to do some due diligence.

I can’t get this three-wide lineup out of my head. Roddy White to the left, Julio Jones to the right and Moss slotted on either side or in motion from one side to the other.

Patriots QB Tom Brady chats with Falcons QB Matt Ryan before Tuesday's morning practice between the teams in Flowery Branch. Curtis Compton/ccompton@ajc.com

Then you think about the four-receiver lineup with Roddy, Randy, Julio and Tony Gonzalez. Wow, who’s going to stop that?

Five wides – Roddy, Randy, Juilio, Tony G and Harry Douglas or Eric Weems (Both are prospective free agents.)

Wide receivers coach Terry Robiskie is a strong and forceful coach. He certainly could firmly manage Moss.

And heck, if Moss becomes a problem, send him to Harsfield-Jackson in the black mini-van with a one-way ticket back to West Virginia.

The Falcons have to at least give my man Joel Segal (Moss’ agent) a call.

Here’s the ESPN story on Moss saying he wants to return to the NFL.

He’s even been endorsed by New England quarterback Tom Brady! (I don’t know where Giselle Brady stands on this development. I have to think that she’s all for receivers who catch her husband’s passes.)

Moss abruptly retired on Aug. 1 with a one-sentence statement from his agent, Joel Segal. But the ink had scarcely dried on the stories listing his career accomplishments — 954 receptions for 14,858 yards and 153 touchdowns over 13 seasons — when reports began to surface that Moss would be willing to return if the right situation presented itself. Tom Brady, with whom he connected for a single-season record 23 touchdowns for the Patriots in 2007, even said he’d welcome Moss back to New England.

Your thoughts?

Be nice, now!

That would be a great line up DOL but I am fearful of Randy’s I play when I want to attitude and the effect it would have on the team.

Get the tackle from San Diego and fix that o-line and that offense would be the best in the league. Defense’s would fear us. Could never double-team a receiver or roll coverage.

Given Randy Moss’ age, the Falcons should be able to get him at a discount.

ehhhhhhhhhhhh… no thanks

One could make the case that Moss is like the Derrick Coleman of the NFL. Uber-talented but didn’t always give consistent full effort to max the talent people saw in him.

We need OL help, DL help, and more than a passing glance at shoring up the DBs.

All Moss wants is to get a ring. He knows that this will be his last chance to get one. He can’t risk messing things up and destroy that chance.

That is a good scenerio-having that kind of lineup on offense. Randy Moss is the rogue receiver that would compliment the Falcons. The Falcons want to get away from being the choirboy underachievers-this is the way to do it. Mr. Blank-get this deal done ASAP.

THATS A BETTER OFFENSE THEN THE SAINTS AND THE PACKERS HAVE RIGHT NOW. CAN YOU 19 – 0 AND SUPERBOWL NOW WHAT DEFENSE IN THE LEAGUE COULD STOP THAT

To all the naysayers, Randy Moss’s attitude is no worst than Roddy’s. That’s our problem-no one wants to speak his/her mind. This is still supposed to be a free country, at least for right now. Just look at the Hawks-no one on that sorry team has ever spoken their mind about the inept coaching or about the bad management choices they’ve made with drafting talent. Everyone on that organization is scared for their own paycheck.

2-3 years ago, I would have said hell no to this idea. Now, I’m warming up to it. That offensive lineup would give defensive coordinators nightmares all season.

I’m also starting to envision the idea of even taking a look at Albert Haynesworth.

In theory this sounds great… No way it happens though D-Led! Flacons would not even make the call! On another note though, while everyone keeps talking about drafting a TE to replace Gonzo, I actually don’t think that’s the answer. I think the answer is acquiring FA Martellus Bennett who has four years of experience, has been groomed under pro bowler Jason Whitten, has shown flashes & is still just 24 years old!!! I think he’s a perfect fit for our TE issue & could allow us to run dangerous 2 TE set this year. He’s already been groomed by a tough prow bowl quality TE & getting a year to learn from the best TE ever will only make him that much better! He should then be able to step uninterruptedly into the starting role the following year without our Offense missing much of a beat & him still being young enough to grow with the youthful core we have!

The work ethic I like. Maybe Randy did have an attitude with Tenessee, but, next to Jacksonville, they had the sorriest offense in the league. I think that the three of them, Randy, Julio, and Roddy-along with Tony will have a positive influence on the O-line as a whole. Matt will have to step up his game. Matt’s probably working on his body-as we speak-to strenghen that “noodle arm” of his and get his core in shape-ready on day 1 for mini-camp. He’ll have the benifit of having a full off-season and so will the other offesive players. We need to dump M. Turner-while he has some value. This is a passing league. Yes, you have to have your powerful running backs in place, but if Turner doesn’t lose all of that extra weight he’s carring, then trade him for running back who quicker to the hole and powerful to the cuts. Lastly, get a good backup to give Matt competition at the qb position.

We haven’t gotten blow out of the playoffs the past two seasons because we didn’t have enough people to catch the football. Nope, we’ve gotten dominated because we haven’t been able to push anybody off of the line of scrimmage, on either side of the ball. We’ve got decent talent on this team, so just upgrade BOTH lines in a big way and we will be much, much closer to achieving what we all desire. .

But for now, we need to use this free agency to add that defensive playmaker, such as mathis… and i wouldnt disagree with drafting an offensive threat like orson charles or lamichael james.

I’d take Hines Ward if the Steelers end up letting him go. At least that old man can still throw a nasty block on a defensive back. Moss has no redeeming qualities left. An unhappy and frustrated Moss isn’t good for anyone. And what’s with this receiver talk? I’d rather beef up the defense, or O-line.

This team needs to focus the free agent period on defense, not add a problem child to the equation. The Falcons like to run, and Moss will not block. With the salary cap as what it is, the Falcons don’t need a high paid third down receiver that you can only play in long yardage situations, or pass only situations. They also need to be able to block for Matt Ryan, and Moss won’t be able to help if Matt doesn’t have proper NFL protection.

“Then you think about the four-receiver lineup with Roddy, Randy, Julio and Tony Gonzalez. Wow, who’s going to stop that?”

Every team in the NFL, that’s who.

1. Roddy White is the king of dropped passes, among the league leaders in 2011.
2. Julio Jones shows up when he feels like it and drops his own share of passes.
3. Matt Ryan is not accurate enough to hit any of these guys in stride consistently.

Do you think adding Randy “Prima Donna” moss to an already-suspect receiving corps is going to make them unstoppable?

You have got to be kidding.

The crew we have is long on talent and short on heart, discipline, and focus.

Randy Moss would only exacerbate that.

On the other hand, he would fit right in.

If he want to play again then he will be a great to add to our receiver corp… just think about the DC trying to stop them, it has been said who are you going to double cover.I also they put some sweeps in their playbook for Rogers by time they do that he’ll be trade bait.Turner up the middle is not his game and we all knew this but it seems that the coach’s for some reason when fail the player’s by not letting them play i.e. pressure on both sides of the ball.

If you bring in Moss or any other receiver you slow down the process of Douglas. HD will be a very good receiver in this league. He did very well when Julio was out. He now has that needed year under his belt after knee surgery. The only receiver the Falcons need is the eventual replacement for Tony G. For my 10 cents give me a new offensive brain that will get us in the right situations and pray that Matt learns to execute it. The elite QB’s know how to throw the ball even when a receiver is covered. He has the arm strength to throw the deep ball. Most of the time he overthrows it when a receiver has a step on the DB’s. We know Matt is not going anywhere and I would not want him to, but he has to get better.

He has no arm strength, can’t throw over the middle and relies on 7 yard out routes. Our offense is LOADED with pro bowlers already. Roddy, Tony, Julio (with any other qb he would be), Turner. And Matty “Ice” cant score a point in a playoff game. You think its mularky’s fault? U think mularky doesnt draw up deep options in his plays? of course not!! the king of check downs needs to get in the gym. learn how to throw a football. I like that idea and keep harry douglass. I think its all about the coach because reguardless or not moss has matured or not Billy b and brady kept that boy in check but I am not sure smitty and ryan can keep him in check.
Here are the pros: he would add some needed depth to the wr core because they are pretty thin if you look past the starting 3 in atlanta.

It could turn atlanta into a similar situation that the giants have. You stop nicks you get cruz if you stop cruz you get manningham so It would turn our offense into offensive juggernut.

YOu stop roddy you get jj, you stop jj you get douglass and then if you stop douglass you get moss on top of the fact we have gonzo man oh man that would be hard to stop.

since the oline will be fixed next year we will run more 4 wr/ spread type sets and he would do a great job in that

He will be cheap because of his age

he could help mentor jj and the rest of the staff because I think he has grown up since his younger days

cons-
could have ayear like ochocinco did with pats and be non productive

could be have not matured and be a cancer in the locker room

in the long run at least bring him for some practices to see where he is at phyically and if shows that he has something still in the tank and the price is right well all means pick him up

What evidence do you guys have that Randy Moss has lost his break away speed? According to Chris Carter on ESPN, Randy Moss still runs a 4.3 in the 40. In the combine Julio ran a 4.4 in the 40 and he is the faster player on the team.

Secondly, Randy Moss is 6′4 and has a 43″ vertical so he doesn’t need that blazing speed because he would win most jump balls.

The question is not whether the Falcons should give him a shot the question should be why would he come out of retirement to play for a team that just lost their offensive coordinator, player personnel boss and an 0-3 record in the playoffs.

One problem with a Roddy-Julio-Randy lineup (aside from Matt Ryan’s inability to throw deep passes) is that none of them is ideally equipped to be a slot receiver. The ideal slot receiver is a precise route runner with good change-of-direction skills, and usually the smaller the better. All three of those receivers are big receivers who are better at playing on the outside.

Najeh Davenpoop

February 14th, 2012

” I assume you’re referring to Matt Ryan’s arm strength. No, he doesn’t have the strongest arm in the league, but neither does Drew Brees. Brees’s strength is his accuracy.”

Brees may not have Aaron Rodgers’ arm, but he has enough arm strength to fit the ball between good defensive backs playing zone. Ryan tried to complete a 3rd and long to Roddy White in that game against the Giants, and a ball thrown with some zip would have gotten to Roddy, but Ryan’s pass was too slow and got batted down by the DB. It’s not just deep balls that are the problem. He is a very accurate passer on passes within 15 yards or so, but he doesn’t have the arm strength to throw any deeper with any consistency.

What he really needs is a Wes Welker type playing in the slot who can get open underneath, and for Tony Gonzalez to play another ten years.

At the right price… why not? It would bring a fear component to the offense, and if Moss is going through another “I want to play hard” phase, then he’ll be valuable in whatever role he gets… and if he’s not happy to be 3rd on the depth chart at the position, then we cut him before camp breaks. Scoring points with the weapons Atlanta currently has shouldn’t be a problem either, though. The offensive line desperately needs an upgrade. We need one dominant interior lineman who can be relied upon in short yardage to get a push up front. I’m not sure that adding Moss will provide a bigger net impact than getting a guy like Carl Nicks or Ben Grubbs.

Personally I had much rather see a Matt Willis(Denver), Eddie Royal (Denver), Jerome Simpson (Minn),
Pierre Garcon (Indy),Dwayne Bowe(KS), DeSean Jackson (Phil), Marques Colston (N.O.) or Reshaad Davis (Detriot) acquired before Randy Moss.

The offensive line could use a couple of good free-agents, possibly, Demetrius Bell(Buffalo), Max Starks (Pitt), Mark Tauscher (NY), Ben Grubbs (Balt) or Khaliff Barnes (Oakland).

As far as TE’s, Atlanta has a pretty good back-up and the only thing I would do is draft Orson Charles(Georgia).

As far as running backs, keep Jason Snelling and Michael Turner, but bring in Spencer Larson (Denver), Justin Forsett (Seattle) and Tashard Choice (Buffalo).

They must keep as many of their top tier free agents as possible but bring in a Robert Mathias(Indy), Carl Nicks(N0) and possibly bring Jarvis Moss (Oak) , Wallace Sidberry (KS) and Jeremy Minson (Jags)
on the defensive line . Bring in two Defensive Ends and let Biermann go.

I think Randy would be a great fit for the team, that being said it must be for 1 year, finacially vet min with incentives for obtainable goals. I understand people’s doubts about Randy but he usually doest show his A$$ until at least the second year.

I would like the move, but I would love TO better. He is stronger after the catch. I like Randy as well. Look, we play Giants, Saints and Cowboys next year. Go get Randy or TO, He’ll both if need be.

Well, if the Falcons added Moss to White and Jones, then we’d cinch the league lead in dropped passes! If you recall, Moss was dropping more balls toward the end of his career than ever before. I believe White and Jones are already 1 and 2 on that list!

OH MY GOD! What if we could pull off Manning Moss White Jones and Gonzales – No offense to Ryan but give him a year to learn behind Peyton.

We would be unstoppable!

Remember when another team took a chance on a dinged up and disrespected quarterback named Brees?

I’m not high on Matty Ice being the quarterback to get us back into the superbowl. I’m also not crazy about the defensive coor. either. I’m glad that the off. coor left and went to be a head coach. I would like the Falcons to try and get Peyton Manning a good defense and off line then superbowl ring.

Hines Ward or TO would be a better pick because they both play the slot position.
