Should the Falcons sign Marcus McNeill?

Should the Falcons pursue left tackle Marcus McNeill if he is waived by the San Diego Chargers?

Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune reported the McNeill, who played at Cedar Grove High and Auburn, is expected to be waived by the Chargers in March over health concerns about his neck.

For one, they will likely clear the books of $10 million by waiving left tackle Marcus McNeill. McNeill has to be cleared by a team doctor by the third day of the new league year, which begins March 13, or his 2012 salary is not guaranteed. McNeill is not expected to get a clean bill of health from the Chargers.

When healthy, McNeill has been one of the best left tackles in the league. He’s been selected to two Pro Bowls.

One of the Falcons’ main objectives is to improve their offensive line this offseason. Will Svitek and Sam Baker started games at left tackle last season.

The Falcons have medically passed players with neck concerns in the past. Kevin Mathis, Coy Wire and Kelvin Hayden have all been cleared by the Falcons after suffering neck injuries.

Last season, six teams flunked Hayden before the Falcons cleared him and he signed a one-year deal. He ended the season on injured reserve with a dislocated/turf toe.

McNeil, who turned 28 in November, is massive at 6-foot-7 and 336 pounds. His neck and back injuries have led to him playing in just 20 of 32 games over the past two seasons.

Over the first four seasons in the league, McNeill started 62 out of a possible 64 games. He was selected in the second round (50th overall) of the 2006 NFL draft.

The Falcons’ athletic performance staff will have to make sure McNeil is healthy and then try to get a functional movement screen on him. There might be a simple weight or muscle imbalance that can be corrected to alleviate his neck and spine issues.

Atlanta isn’t doing very well on picking up other teams “rejects” lately. Why waste money on yet another former pro bowler who looks like a toilet bowler when he gets to Atlanta?

DLED, An injured McNeil is 10X better than Svitex and Baker!! The Falcon’s don’t have anything to lose by giving him a try out. Dimitroff drafted Jerry, Moore, and Baker knowing that they were injury prone in college.

I’m getting a lil weary of signing players with pre-existing injuries. He is a physical specimen for sure, but I would HAVE to pass on him.

If he’s cleared. Likely issue is nickel and dime health and wellness staff for the Chargers. Cheap franchise. Our Docs are top notch.

Or, could their be an agenda to not clear him to save the $10 mil by SD?

He would definitely be the end of Sammy Baker Jr as the Left Sieve on our O Line. Matty Ice is calling all the neck specialists in the country to get this guy cleared.

Absolutely not. Too injured, too often. His price tag will eliminate other prospective deals, too. But maybe we can go for his replacement, Jared Gaither, if the Chargers do decide to stick with McNeill.

Poppa Smurf, if you sign a player that has played in the NFL, you are going to have to sign them with pre-existing injuries. Most heal fully, but with the pounding they take, the likelihood of reinjury is high. That’s why training staffs are so important. Minimalize the long-lasting injuries.

Carl Nicks is a free agent signed him from our arch enemy and solidify the spot that Dahl left- Whatever money it takes Carl Nicks and that line automatically becomes better and hurts the Saints at the same time in your division-

This is what we need to focus on-

The Saints won’t have the money to sign Brees, Nicks and their best wideout- All free agents this year- There is a window

I’m all for bringing in a former pro bowler for a look see. Let’s just not hitch the wagon to him. Kick the tires a bit, see if the dog can still hunt. And do it at a discount. Signing any player is a gamble. Just if he has an injury history you make sure to hedge that bet. GET HIM CHEAP! And I am good with it.

“You big dummy” whats with the falcons signing and drafting players with prexisting injuiries they did it with peria jerry, Kelvin hayden and look where its got them nowhere,

Most likely both of them will either be traded or realesed this year and also you waisted a first round pick because of it.

I would sugguest that we stop that trend right now by not signing Mcneil or any players for that matter with prior reecords of ijuries that also includes players like mario williams.

I just dont get that why do teams want to take a risk on players with neck injuries its a very severe injury on top of the fact that football is a contact sport which makes it even worse idea to take that kind of risk.

That trend with the falcons has me scared that they will pick a player like Ledarius green as our Te in the 3rd. He is talented player but his durablity issues make him a big lrisk that we cant afford to waste a 3rd round pick on because we dont have that many picks.

Heck yes they should (IF HE’S HEALTHY)

He’s a better player than anyone currently on the roster along the line, no kidding they should if they can and he’s healthy.

One Caveat, Carl Nicks or Ben Grubbs should be a priority over Mcneill because we don’t currently employ a Right Guard on the roster that can play unless the RT moves inside.

One other perhaps no, they may have to break the bank if they want to get Mario Williams, and they may want to go that way over an injured albiet, very capable left tackle. If he’s healthy, he’ll be the best we’ve had since the heyday of Bob Whitfield (known later as holding 70) He may be the best left tackle since sometime in the 80’s.

The only players without a history of injuries are rookies (and many of them not so much). Just about everybody has missed games at one time or another. Only a handful of players go season after season without missing games. The odds are against you if you are looking to sign a veteran.

I repeat, I will take a look at any skilled player if 1)The doctors can clear them and 2) I can get them for cheap enough.

Why would San Diego let McNeill go if he is that good and he is healthy. They have doctors too. No more injured players please. We have a LT with back problems. He lost his starting job because of it.
I hope Carl Nicks will be leaving NO but don’t think we can pay $8 million/yr plus for him. If so, why wouldn’t we pay the $4 million/yr for 4 years to Harvey Dahl that St. Louis paid him last year? I don’t know the answer, but we need a good OL. Blalock $6 mil/yr, Clabo $5 mil/yr I don’t think we can pay for the best at every OL position but could probably get some really solid young proven men in FA for a reasonable price and use what few draft picks we have on the DL and TE. Too bad we let a good one get away. We’ll probably pay more than Dahl’s $4 million to replace him. We’ll probably make the same mistake with Grimes. If we let him go and coverage kills us we will be looking and having to pay big bucks for his replacement. Hopefully Franks and Owens have gotten enough experience to do the job.
Why not let Weems go and let Franks return P’s & KO’s?

Bierman could be resigned for a year to see how he does at being a sitatuional blizing lb similar to clay matthews. . Nolan said he wanted to play a hybrid 4-3 so that would fit into the scheme perfectly. He played olb in college so he is familar with the postion and you could still play him in the de roatation also. If you let douglass walk the wr postion is very thin if you look past the starting three plus roddy is getting up their in age so letting douglass walk wouldnt be a good idea.

Sorry, the man is injuried too much for that kind of money. Go get Harvey Dahl back from Rams, he would have cost us about 5 million a yr to have kept. Bad move guys! He has a bad attitude which is good for OL!!

8:38 pm

We want this guy????
No wonder we can’t win a friggin’ play-off game. The boy wonder can do much better than this!
Sign Carlo Nicks from N.O. — you know the guy that was shoving our D-Line 10 yards down the field every snap! Svitek is a better option than McNeal.

Nativebird

February 8th, 2012
8:40 pm

Heck yes….you can’t do much worse than what we have. Baker has unbelievably reached the
Hartwell – Anderson level of bust in an Atlanta uniform, and Svitek is not the answer.

RUN from this guy, avoid at all costs. There is no risk reward return when trust is involved. As in you can’t trust this guy to be on the field. Please say no. LT’s are not relievers that can be resurrected.

Signing Carl Nicks from NO won’t happen. He wants to get paid 56.7 million dollars, just like the Saints other Pro bowler Jarhi Evans. We can’t spend that kind of money on him. If we spend that money on Nicks, what about Lofton? I think Grubbs is a better because he’s cheap. Plus, I heard the Saints won’t sign Colston back because he wants top wideout money. The Saints still haven’t signed Brees and after they sign him they’ll start talking to Nicks. Colston looks like he won’t be back in New Orleans, and D.Bowe has come out and said he would take a discount to play in New Orleans with Drew Brees. So it’s looks like if Colston doesn’t come back, Bowe will take his spot. That’s back new fellow falcon’s fans.

We did get solid play out of same situation with Coy Wire. If he passes the physical, I agree that we have top notch doctors and a cutting edge analysis and exercise program that can diagnose specific problems that can be corrected and give an athlete the best physical performance years of his life. I say, “Go for it!” (look at what we have now!)

@ Ricky Neal…….Why don’t you like to use commas. Generally if you are including a number of individuals in a sentance you will use a comma to separate and acknoledge their individuality. Ex. Sam Baker, Todd McClure, Curtis Lofton, and Kevin Hayden………
See commas can be a good thing

from great news falcons fans according two pff clabo had a really good year i know it seemed like he was beat more than in the past but still above average mcclure also had a fine year the promble is rg/lt looks like andrew jackson will get a look at rg this season along with mike johnson and reynolds he may have a leg up on the compitetion going into preseason because he knows how pat hill the new o-line coordinator operates and was a pupil of hill, sat fresno state whom pat thinks very highly of and i do belive that we will go out get a left tackle now that i think about it because we don,t have enough depth at that postion but i see baker and svitek going at it with a third guy battle from gf fa for that lt spot

falcons have 8 to 10 free agents try two resign assuming that brent grimes and john abraham will not be singed curtis lofton will be the number priority to resign here are some players who would fill in some holes the falcons will have but might not cost a boat load of money keep in mind this list might feature qualtity since they also need depth at postion free agent signing jeremy zuttah tampabay anthony bengals colling brandon carr cb kansas city terrell thomas cb new york giants mark anderson de jacksonville mario williams cliff avril sigining one de who is younger and provide same production would fill in void with abe potentially leaving and the coaches not wanting turn over to resigns lawrence sidbury i just read it on falcoholic

ricky neal

The birds have to resign Lofton and Grimes, in that order. That is all there is to it ! After that they need to ID three other pressing needs (with available cap space). Right now it looks like those areas are L. OT and R OG. They then need to find a quality pass rusher or someone to replace Abraham (who I think will have to walk since it appears he actually retired after the 2010 season). Then there is that 2nd round pick–If they have any $$$ left they should take the best RB available in the 2nd round; Then, get a good O-lineman in the 4th. After that it is a crap-shoot with the remaining draft picks. Dimitroff is going HAVE TO EARN his money this time. This is what the best GM’s do to pull off big moves when it looks like nothing is out there and they have to pinch pennies. This one is on you Thomas, are you up to the challenge?

Absolutely. They need a LT and this is the man for the job. When he is healthy, he is a pro-bowler. Definitely should sign him.

Why not? We drafted this raggedy Sam Baker when he was younger and supposedly healthy. Marcus McNeil is better at 80% than Sam Baker at 110%.

[...] The Atlanta Journal-Constitution believes the Falcons could be a potential landing spot for LT Marcus McNeill if the Chargers release him this offseason. The Falcons need an upgrade on Will Svitek, and Sam Baker is in danger of being released. San Diego is expected to cut McNeill next month in order to save $10 million in cap space. McNeill would have no trouble beating out Svitek in training camp, but makes for a risky signing due to medical concerns. Feb. 11 – 6:46 pm et Source: Atlanta Journal-Constitution [...]
