COFFEE RUN: 8 nuggets from Mike Smith

Falcons coach Mike Smith has been busy filling out his new staff.

Upon returning from Mobile, he shot this little video with the team’s website.
If you can’t watch the entire 9:08, here are some of the highlights:

1. The Falcons have nearly completed their new offensive playbook.

2. Defensive coordinator Mike Nolan with utilize a “multiplicity” of defenses. (Will sprinkle in some 3-4 principles.)

3. The coaches are set to do their specific position-by-position evaluations.

4. They have to concentrate on the top juniors who have applied for the draft between now and the combine.

5. They are getting ready for the combine testing. They will stress mental, physical and psychological testing. He’s looking forward to getting the medical grades from the doctors.

6. To get ready for Free Agency, which starts March 13, the coaching staff is set to get their assignments from the personnel staff of the players they will evaluate. Smith noted that every free agent will not be evaluated.

7. Now that the coaching staff has been revamped, it’s on to revamping the roster. The Falcons will look to returning players, new players via the draft, adding through free agent and possibly trading for players.

8. He brought one large coffee (for himself), chicken bisquits and several Egg McMuffin’s for the morning staff meeting.

DOL, thanks for the early news.

Its been a while since I have been to the crib, but Coach Smith could pick up some better fare for breakfast. Did Mrs. Winners go out of business?

If he doesn’t win a play-off game, he won’t be bringing food to work period. I want to see pressure on Smith similar to what Tom Coughlin has on him every year from the Giant organization.

why would you want that samuel, do you really want to go back to being a crappy team. they will get there dude. we only get 16 games a year. the falcons win most of them. 20 other teams get left out of the playoffs, we lose smith we are one of the 20.

I’m glad to hear words like “new”, “revamped” and “multiplicity” coming from MS. I have been reading as much as possible about the new coordinators and am liking what I’ve read. So far, a good off season for the Birds. Let’s hope TD and MS can work some more magic with the few picks we have and FA.

robertussen hit the nail on the head. Quit b–ching about what MS hasn’t done and understand what he HAS done. He’s taken the Falcons to a level of success they have never had — ever. This franchise was so bad for so long we should all pray Smith and TD are around for a long time. The playoff wins will come.

Marcus, years ago when I first moved to ATL from the North I was introduced to Ms. Winner’s…wow! They did it right. Couldn’t get enough. Then over the years something wonderful evolved in to something not so good. I am speaking of their bisquits. They used to be thin, flaky and always hot. I used to make my fried chicken decision based on the bisquits there, but now because of their metamorphosis in to dry, hard lumps that resemble hockey pucks I hardly can ever eat what is no called bisquits in ATL. Guess people have forgotten what the real deal should be.

How do you complete the playbook without having first having done your player evaluations?!? Unless its a gigantic one-size-fits-all playbook that’s trimmed down based on the skill set your players have. Let’s take the often debated screen pass. Mularkey publicly said that the o-line didn’t have the skill set to run screen passes. So, are you going to get guys who can do it, or take it out of the playbook? DLed… ask some questions man….

I believe Coach Smith has learned from the old adage,”experience is the best teacher”. He had some first time ideas when he became a first time head coach, but now with some experience under his belt and some “prodding” from Arthur, he’s going to put together one fine team. Looking forward to next season!

All black uniforms would be nice. Are we talking about the black jerseys & helmets from the 1990’s or from 2000’s? Either way, I’d be for it, maybe we could bring in Jerry Glanville in all black w/ a black cowboy hat to boot (pun intended), not to coach, just to stand on the sidelines like a second mascot to Freddie?

I am excited about the prospects of a new aggressive D, Nolan has been solid everywhere he’s been, if we can get to the QB, we might not dread holding teams to 3rd and longs, we might actually get off the field!

Go Falcons!

Hey Doc Dawg and Trainwreck!! You are giving Murlarkey too much credit if Murlarkey said the O-line could not run the screen pass that is on the coach man all these guys are playing in the NFL!! Murlarkey could not design a good screen pass with Julio and Roddy the bubble screen should have been used a lot more.

The coach has his playbook of plays he wants in his offense that is first step.
Step 2 evaluate on tape of players the team has and the players the team would like to acquire in the draft or free agency. Step 3 would be getting players in free agency or the draft that can do what you want. Step 4 after getting players in camp evaluate talent and make adjustments to the playbook if necesarry. Step 5 OTA’s and training camp to get all the wrinkles out and make it work.
Step 6 Make fans like Trainwreck and DocDawg stop talking and sound smarter!!

@ Dan- I saw a documentary ( I am not kidding) called, “The Southern Biscuit”. It was awesome. I couldn’t believe how interested I was in it. They ranked a resturaunt in Atlanta as one of the top three places for biscuits in the nation. Cannot recall the name of the place but it was privately owned…not a chain.

A real cute part. They had some interview time with this little grandma from Atlanta. She was probably 90 but as bright and articulate as she could be. They were asking her about different buscuit recipies she used. She talked alot about the lost art of “tea biscuits”. They were smaller versions of what we are used to.

So they bring in this biscuit to her from one of the chain resturants and it was huge. May have been Bob Evans. They have pretty big biscuits.

Well this little lady just covered her mouth like they had shown her pornography and she smiled a little mischevious smile and said, “Oh my, my, I don’t think it would be ladylike to serve a biscuit THAT large.”

Very cute.

Sounds like no real plan in place. Just a lot of bull. Nothing will work if they do not improve the pass rush and get more speed in the backfield. Turner is very good, but you have got to have a speed option and you can not start every game with Turner up the middle. Also, every fourth down option does not have to be a run play. A little diversification will go a long way in improving success.

Having already created the playbook sounds to me like they know who they definitely will keep and what type of skill set they are looking for in the draft and, more importantly, free agency. The player evaluation will be about whether some of the on the fence players should be kept or let go. The amount of free agency and our cash availability puts us in good position to make some moves in free agency. TD, and the draft picks for Julio, may come out looking crazy like a fox.

good idea to black out the uniforms.

I think the 3/4 princlples the falcons will use are:

using a big 3/4 nt to take double teams so they can get more pressure from the des or lbs.

Standing up the des as lbs and use them as situational blitzers:

I think they will sign Paul Solili from Miami as the nt to take all the double teams and he worked with nolan last year. He was a big part of his defense.

I think they will resign Kroy bierman as one of the situational rush blitzing lbs because he played lb in college

I think they will also sign Kendal langford from miami since he worked with nolan last year and he is very versatle.

I think they will either trade or release peria jerry

They still have a dilemia at rb and it will be intresting to see what they do in that area.

I think they should release snelling

I think they should sign Mike tolbert as snelling replacement from the chargers because he is very versatile. He came into the leauge as a fb but because of lack of depth they turned him into a rb. He has pretty good recieving skills and is from Douglasville Ga. He will be a good third down back.

I think they should release mughelli

I think they should sign Marcel Reece in Free agency to replace mughelli. He is very versatle. He played wr in college and then eventually was turned into a Fb in the nfl. He also was coached by Tom Cable who is probably one of the most underated ol coaches in the nfl so he has great blocking techinque and also excells in the others areas of the game also.

Dirk was talking about installing a screen pass into the falcons offensive playbook and what a better way to do it that with ex wide Reciever as a Fb and two rbs with pretty good recieving skills on your team.

I think they going to keep blaylock and clabo and then trade or release the rest and just start over with the oline and let Hulk hill pick and evualate his own players for the oline

Disgusted…is one adjective I would use to explain how I feel about this team. Hoodwinked would be another. I’ll give Blank and Co. credit…they actually had me believing that they were on the right track. But that playoff loss was where I got off the train. What an embarrassing and pathetic display, to not only get blown out once but TWICE IN TWO YEARS! It’s a slap in the face to any NFL player who’s ever strapped it up, played through the pain, and laid it on the line in a big game. If you need someone to tell you to ” It’s a big game…time to play well”, then you lack something that a coaching staff can’t give you. To hell with this team, I hope they go 2-14 next year! Losers.

I see disaster again. Instead of focusing on the real issues, we talk new uniforms.C–p! Do they not remember this (last) season’s situation at UGA? No need to repeat that. Howabout “QB coaching”? 4 years have gone. No positive results. No accountability. Also I really did not like MS smiling after losing terribly @ Giants. What was there to smile about? AB needs to push harder for better results, accountability, and responsibility. Otherwise, there will be no news, but the same excuses. Over, and over.

no, no, and heck no to all black unis. But I agree this would be a great time to change our uniforms. My vote is for the original red helmets with the orginal falcon logo, as well as the clean, classic look of the original unis (i.e. what we see on throwback days). When it comes to football uniforms, simple is better imho. Think Green Bay or Chicago. They now better than to mess with “modernizing.” If we can’t go back, can we go forward with a clean, simple look with a red helmet, stripe down the middle and a close approximation of the original logo? Thanks.

That’s my team and proud of em win lose or draw…after suffering through the last 30 years of Falcons football the past 4 seasons have been awesome even though we’ve had some hard luck in the playoffs…time to look forward to 2012 and I like the coaches we have in place, The purge that took place needed to take place and some new voices and new players may be what the doctor ordered. I do think we need a clay matthews type player, lots of grit, attitude and some swagger that when they walk on that field, opposing offenses know they’re about to be hit and hit hard….Go Birds in 2012.

Those of you calling for Mike Smith’s job: stop it! He has had 4 winning seasons in a row and hasn’t had a losing season yet. This is his first head coaching job and he’s doing very well at it. He’s a very good coach and I’m glad we have him. I’ve seen the Falcons lose a lot of games since 74/75 and this is better than all those bad teams they had in the past. You fire coaches that on;y win 3 and 4 game not coaches who win ever year. The post season wins will come.

I hope they keep improving. Matt needs to be let loose from those chains that the coaching staff have placed on him. We need help on the lines. Don’t worry about keeping Turner… Get value for him while we still can.

Yeah I talk trash about Smith but I know Grudens team was Tony Dungy’s team.. Had Tony had one more year he wouldve went to the superbowl but he got one in Indy.

So I with Mike Smith but dagnabit man stop being so Zen Passive and get in their rumps.

Also old Uni’s with The Red helmets and Red Jerseys.. Get back to the basics especially outside playing in the new field getting dirty.. No all Black unis.. Red Helmets, red jerseys or red helmets black jerseys.. nobody is wearing red these days.. All these off brand colors.. Red is fire… And thats what the Falcons need FIRE…..

This team was not strong enough yet to win the Superbowl. For the third year, they played the Superbowl winner (or contender in the yet to be determined NY Giants case). That doesn’t make them bad. They are growing in capability; they are consistently improving and they are among the top 10 at this point. They are improving even further in the coaching staff and I believe they will improve talent too. The program is to get stronger each year and they are doing that. Like someone said, 20 other teams never made the playoffs and very few have ever had the consecutive winning seasons that we are seeing with the Falcons. When it happens, it won’t be a flash in the pan piece of luck. It will be a sustainable advancement to the upper echelons of the NFL. The uniforms won’t win the games. The TEAM will win the games. Next year is Gonzo’s last, so I really want it to be a break out year. This isn’t a team of brainless thugs that will implode and disappear. This is a respectable team of intelligent atheletes and coaches who will win respect from around the league.

Off subject but if Blank wants a new stadium it should be paid for 100% with private money. government shouldn’t make any legal committments or pay a single penny.

If I may (or dare?) stray from the prescribed topic, would it be too much to ask to see a blog/article on the ‘retractable dome’ story in a format that allows comments? The J-C story available is well done but it does NOT allow anyone to say anything in response and since it will likely be taxpayers and/or ticket buyers who pay for some portion of any new stadium… shouldn’t we have a say?

Thanks :)
