Falcons coach Mike Smith has been busy filling out his new staff.
Upon returning from Mobile, he shot this little video with the team’s website.
If you can’t watch the entire 9:08, here are some of the highlights:
1. The Falcons have nearly completed their new offensive playbook.
2. Defensive coordinator Mike Nolan with utilize a “multiplicity” of defenses. (Will sprinkle in some 3-4 principles.)
3. The coaches are set to do their specific position-by-position evaluations.
4. They have to concentrate on the top juniors who have applied for the draft between now and the combine.
5. They are getting ready for the combine testing. They will stress mental, physical and psychological testing. He’s looking forward to getting the medical grades from the doctors.
6. To get ready for Free Agency, which starts March 13, the coaching staff is set to get their assignments from the personnel staff of the players they will evaluate. Smith noted that every free agent will not be evaluated.
7. Now that the coaching staff has been revamped, it’s on to revamping the roster. The Falcons will look to returning players, new players via the draft, adding through free agent and possibly trading for players.
8. He brought one large coffee (for himself), chicken bisquits and several Egg McMuffin’s for the morning staff meeting.

Those of you calling for Mike Smith’s job: stop it! He has had 4 winning seasons in a row and hasn’t had a losing season yet. This is his first head coaching job and he’s doing very well at it. He’s a very good coach and I’m glad we have him. I’ve seen the Falcons lose a lot of games since 74/75 and this is better than all those bad teams they had in the past. You fire coaches that on;y win 3 and 4 game not coaches who win ever year. The post season wins will come.

I hope they keep improving. Matt needs to be let loose from those chains that the coaching staff have placed on him. We need help on the lines. Don’t worry about keeping Turner… Get value for him while we still can.

Yeah I talk trash about Smith but I know Grudens team was Tony Dungy’s team.. Had Tony had one more year he wouldve went to the superbowl but he got one in Indy.
So I with Mike Smith but dagnabit man stop being so Zen Passive and get in their rumps.
Also old Uni’s with The Red helmets and Red Jerseys.. Get back to the basics especially outside playing in the new field getting dirty.. No all Black unis.. Red Helmets, red jerseys or red helmets black jerseys.. nobody is wearing red these days.. All these off brand colors.. Red is fire… And thats what the Falcons need FIRE…..

This team was not strong enough yet to win the Superbowl. For the third year, they played the Superbowl winner (or contender in the yet to be determined NY Giants case). That doesn’t make them bad. They are growing in capability; they are consistently improving and they are among the top 10 at this point. They are improving even further in the coaching staff and I believe they will improve talent too. The program is to get stronger each year and they are doing that. Like someone said, 20 other teams never made the playoffs and very few have ever had the consecutive winning seasons that we are seeing with the Falcons. When it happens, it won’t be a flash in the pan piece of luck. It will be a sustainable advancement to the upper echelons of the NFL. The uniforms won’t win the games. The TEAM will win the games. Next year is Gonzo’s last, so I really want it to be a break out year. This isn’t a team of brainless thugs that will implode and disappear. This is a respectable team of intelligent atheletes and coaches who will win respect from around the league.

Off subject but if Blank wants a new stadium it should be paid for 100% with private money. government shouldn’t make any legal committments or pay a single penny.

If I may (or dare?) stray from the prescribed topic, would it be too much to ask to see a blog/article on the ‘retractable dome’ story in a format that allows comments? The J-C story available is well done but it does NOT allow anyone to say anything in response and since it will likely be taxpayers and/or ticket buyers who pay for some portion of any new stadium… shouldn’t we have a say?
Thanks
