UGA's Brandon Boykin taking a break during Monday's practice. (D. Orlando Ledbetter/Dledbetter@ajc.com)
FAIRHOPE, Ala – Georgia cornerback Brandon Boykin had a strong first practice for the South team on Monday.
He drew praise for WashingtonRedskins defensive back coach Raheem Morris (formerly of the Tampa Bay Bucs) after breaking up one pass.
“Nice job Boykin, way to get down hill,” Morris said.
Boykin has interviewed with seven teams already, including the Falcons, Carolina and Philadelphia.
He felt his first day of practice went well.
“I was kind of getting acclimated back in that football shape,” Boykin said. “It was my first time putting the pads on in about a month.”
He had seven to eight interivews already. He’s chatted with the Falcons, Carolina and Philadelphia.

Hey Buckeye – here’s a cut and paste from LeftCoast Dawg’s epic post:
“Boykin seems to have good character. He has no off the field issues to my knowledge, and he plays the game with excellent on field intensity. He also has worked hard to learn about the game. His intangibles don’t seem to be anything to worry about.”
Now, go back to making excuses for Tressel and the tattoo’d wonders.

I see there is no comment section for the article about the new stadium. A retractable roof is not affordable, and we’re going to an open air stadium. Does anyone remember what it was like in November and December in the ATL Fulton Co Stadium? Pretty nasty. Sell outs were pretty sparse, even during the years around 1980. Which means TV blackouts, which were more than often. Well boys, as the sommercial goes, “Put some lipstick on this pig. Somebody will buy it…” There was a mention of a bunch of teams moving out of domes. Huston, Detroit, Minnisota, Seatle, and after that the list gets foggy. Oh wait, they moved from one done to a better done with a retractable roof. Silly me…

Don’t know how you can call someone a “good tackler” when you see them totally whiff on slower bigger RB’s turning the corner. I think his skills lie in special teams and nickel.

Cornerback Smurf, I would offer up Weatherspoon if he continues to get better. he’s looking good. I think Grimes got beat deep 2 times all year. I don’t like small corners either, but they rarely evem throw into his zone or to his man these days and he usually gets a hand on the ball. Everything deep went to the other side of the field this year. His early years had flaws but he is top notch now and he will be coveted in free agency. His picks are down because they don’t throw his way much. Sometimes not hearing a players name much during a game means he’s blanketing his area of the field. Our pass defense is bad, but he’s very good.

and here’s another scout’s view.
Positives — Athleticism is above-average, has pretty good speed, fluid hips and quick feet, change-of-direction skills are also above-average… Is a good wrap-up tackler, does not miss a lot of opportunities in open space… Recorded six interceptions in the previous two seasons combined, including
one against UCF in the Liberty Bowl, makes the most of opportunities to make plays at the ball… Durability does not seem to be an issue, has not missed substantial time due to injury… Has excellent leaping ability, is able to cover larger receivers in most situations despite his size… Will be a very good slot defender, lines up against slot receivers regularly, off-man coverage skills are very good… Has good kickoff return skills, ran four kicks back for touchdowns in 2009 and 2010 combined.
Negatives — About an inch shorter than ideal height… Gives too much cushion on out routes, protects himself against double moves, but allows receivers too much space to catch the ball underneath… Often looks into the backfield for too long, which makes him susceptible to picks on crossing patterns over the middle… Does not get off blocks well, not the most physical corner… Leaves feet too often when tackling, needs to do a better job of driving through tackles with his legs… Is not the most versatile corner due to below-average strength, may be relegated to covering slot receivers in the NFL.

he’s a very solid tackler relatively speaking. is he ray lewis? no, not even the old version, but for his size he’s not afraid to hit people and his tackling has gotten better every year.

I absolutely love Brandon, but there is no way the Falcons should take him above the 3rd round.
We have needs in the secondary, but Brandon is best as a return man, not as a cover corner.
He was a DGD and will score a lot of TD’s in the league, but I would sooner line him up at flanker, than at corner. His cover skills would have to im prove significantly.
Falcons need a legit DE, an OL, a cover corner, and an OLB.

Boykin is only a decent tackler when the back is still running sideways. As soon as they turn up field and come at him, he is diving out of the way. No thanks, I’ll pass.
If a new field was a great investment, Blank would build it himself.

Boykin is one of the best pure athletes in the country. he can run and jump with the best. The only question to me is whether he has the hips to play man coverage at this level. He would contribute somewhere though.

Boykin is a game changer type of athlete. He could be a great replacement for Weems and a nickle back at least. However, there will be many of those in NFL draft. and the Falcons don’t have enough picks to be taking flyers. It would be nice to have Boykin on the team but we have bigger needs. I would like to see corners that can jam receivers yet stay with the best of them.

Boykin comes across as a “me” as in MeAngelo kind of guy – that’s what I see. Talent – unquestionable. Punk factor – high.
You have got to be kidding me. Character doesn’t matter or exist OSU. (Tressel, Clarett, Pryor, etc). Boykin is a player with unmistakeable character. I’ve coached him since he was a 9th grader and was never a me guy always about team. He wanted to leave last year but stayed because he wanted to help UGA get back to the SEC Championship. That’s a team guy not selling things for a tattoo, covering up, or just getting paid to play. Do your research before you post things about people you know nothing about.

It is nice to think that a hometown guy will fall to our 2nd Round pick, but more likely, we will be hearing the name of some little known Offensive Guard from Wisconsin or Oklahoma who is rated the 4th or 5th best Guard in the draft.
That’s what you get for not accepting your designated place in line.
