C-Viv reporting from Flowery Branch.

Here are excerpts of Mike Nolan’s conference call with the Atlanta media Wednesday after being named the team’s new defensive coordinator. The biggest highlight is he does not plan to switch to a 3-4 scheme, saying the team has been built as a 4-3 scheme and that currently works best with the personnel.

Q. Will you switch to 3-4 defense?

A. It’s my philosophy that you build your scheme around the players and not the other way around. What has been built there is a very solid foundation on a 4-3 defense. In my 25 years in the NFL, 14 years as a coordinator, seven of them have been in a 4-3 and seven have been in a 3-4. I’m very familiar with both. When I’ve been in a 4-3 I’ve frequently used the 3-4 as part of it. It would appear to me that is what is best for that football team.

Q. What do you know about team and its personnel?

A. I have limited knowledge. I’ve looked at some of it. I know they have a solid group. Overall, it’s an outstanding football team. They have been in the playoffs three of the last four years. They have a very good quarterback. As a group, Mike [Smith] and Thomas [Dimitroff] have done an outstanding job of putting together a roster. I’m just excited to be a part of it and hopefully add something to the defensive side.

Q. What is your relationship with Mike Smith?

A. Mike and I did work together in Baltimore. … I became defensive coordinator and Mike was the linebacker coach. I think we were together one year before he got the coordinator’s job at Jacksonville and left. … I’ve always had tremendous respect for Mike. I think he’s an outstanding coach. He’s coached some very good players. I think he gets a lot out of his players. He’s an outstanding person. We’ve stayed in contact and remained friends.

Q. You had other options, was it your relationship with Mike that brought you here?

A. It was the whole picture. Knowing Mike has a lot to do with it. I’ve also known Thomas for a number of years, but not near as well as I’ve known Mike. …. Big picture to me looked very good and it still does. … To me it’s a good fit.

Q. The secondary has been an issue. They were 20th in the league. Do you have a philosophy there or a plan to fix it?

A. I haven’t had a chance to look over all the players too much, so I can’t comment on an individual basis. But as a whole, I will say this, I think the secondary today is one of the most important areas today more than it was 15-20 years ago just because of the quarterback play nowadays. There are probably more good quarterbacks in the league than there has ever been. Outside of pass rush, the secondary is where the quarterback attacks you the most. It’s real import to have a good secondary. I’m kind of familiar with some of the guys. I think it’s a solid group but in order to play well it obviously takes 11 guys so you can’t put it all on one position. All I can say is it is a vital part of success nowadays in football. … People always talk about having four starting DBs but I think the future is there are really five starting DBs if these quarterbacks keep doing what they are doing.

Q. Coach Smith said he was looking for a certain skill set in new coordinators. In your case, what you do consider your skill set?

A. I think it really starts with what your philosophy is. The thing I’ve really prided myself on over the years is I’ve been very fortunate to be with some outstanding coaches over the years. … The coaches I’ve worked with have made me better. I hope I’ve made them better. Over my years in the NFL, I would say you build your schemes around your players, not the other way around. From a philosophical standpoint, or a skill standpoint, I’d like to think that I’ve been able to, along with the guys I’ve coached with, been able to do what’s best for the players and in turn for the team, whether that is 3-4 or 4-3, whether that’s more blitzes or less blitzes. Because some players do that well and some don’t. What I mean by that is some blitz well and some don’t. Some are better suited for different things. Outside of that, I believe I’m extremely passionate about what I do. I think the best job in football is coordinating. I’ve been a head coach before and there is a lot of thrill in that. But when you get to put your hands on players and coach them and teach them and see them have success and get to call plays, that’s a great job.

Q. Were you given the option of saying you wanted to coach 3-4 or were you told we are a 4-3 team?

A. When Mike and I watched film, he really asked. He said this is what we’ve built to, this is what we are but he said ‘What do you see it looking like?’ I was curious. It was the first thing I said to Mike is ‘What is your vision for this group?’ Mike was very honest and said we’ve built of 4-3 and this is where we are, what we look like, but I want you to look at it as well. When we were watching film together, he said ‘I can see the wheels turning in your head right now.’ Which they are because when I’m watching it I’m trying to see. But he, at no time, said ‘If you want this, this is what we’ve got to do it on.’ Mike is open-minded about that. But I do believe that the vision for them and the target they’ve been hitting is one we want to stay consistent with it and go forward in that respect. If I felt like it could easily be tweaked to got to something else because I felt it could be better, I would obviously suggest it. But I think the track they’ve been on is a good one. 4-3 or 3-4 is very relevant as long as you are doing what your players allow you to do.

Q. Are you looking for three-down guys?

A. The more three-down guys you can get the better. There is no question about that. These are when guys are talking about who to draft, it’s hard to draft a two-down player in my opinion. In the real high first round, you’ve got to try to get as many three-down guys as you can. Sometimes you don’t. Sometimes it takes years for those guys to develop into three-down players. … The way offenses are tempoing the game, you can’t get that guy on and off the field without a penalty. When an offense is in a hurry-up mode, you can’t send a lot of guys on and off the field so you need as many three-down guys as you can get otherwise you just bite the bullet and leave them out there.

Q. What is your pass rush philosophy?

A. … You are going to play a Cam Newton differently then you are going to play a Drew Brees or a Tom Brady. There is a lot that goes into the pass rush, the pass coverage. But they are so tied together and the success of either one, is so tied together. … I would rather have 10 guys get four sacks then only four guys get 10 sacks each because it’s a lot more difficult for an offense to look at your entire defense and say ‘We’ve got to block them all guys. That guy might come, that guy might come.’ That’s a real stress for a quarterback.

Q. Do you intend to keep the rest of the staff in place?

A. That’s Mike’s area, but it’s my understanding that Mike would like to keep everybody and keep this staff intact.

I am now back to my original position on Mike Nolan as DC for the Falcons. I was hoping after BVG left for Auburn that Mike Nolan would be the choice, then before his hiring I read he was a 3-4 Coach and so changed my mind. I am glad for this Q&A to clear things up.
Welcome to Atlanta Coach Nolan !

I laugh when people write that these Coordinators are Mike’s pick. So who picked the ones that have now departed? I believe every coach make up their staff, TD, McKay or Blank has nothing to do with his selection. Blank may only increase the stake to get the guy that Smitty wants.

ohhhYEAH, it is quite apparent that you did not watch the jaguars much with Smitty as DC. He had the two best DT in football (Stroud and Henderson) very good end rushers, excellent LB’s, and good corners not great, but he liked the bend don’t break defense. His Defense was highly thought of, but go watch the Championship Game against the Patriots prior to his hiring here and you will see that BVG was doing what Smitty wanted.

All I can say is Smitty doesn’t have anyone to blame , if in 2012, falcons are still running a soft zone defense, and run up the middle on first and second down, then pass on third down.I believe MM was doing what Smith wanted. While with Steelers MM didn’t run this type offense.
As for BVG, as Jason said go look at AFC championship game against PATs. Smith was DC, they were using same soft zone against Brady. Brady for the day was 26 out of 28, no hits on him and no pressure. Jags Had good lineman and corners. BVG was at that time work with falcons as linebacker coach.

Mr Blanks need to fire one more and he is Rich Mckay. He had the BUCs in same mess as falcons is today with salary cap. Jon Gruden , after they won superbowl, had to cut John Lynch, Warren Sapp and alot of other to get cap down. Mckay was the one that set team up with cap. and he is same one that has falcons screwed up. Load him on bus and send him to Jags.

You shgould have kept the old coaches if the new ones aren’t smart enough to make any changes. That is what one of the big problems is for the Falcons. There is no coach that will come in and make them play like an NFL team. They are still teaching them high school, and maybe some college, plays. Pretty bad when I can call the first 4 or 5 plays of the game and get them right. Imagine what the opposing team can do when they watch the films of the falcons game after game, year after year. Nothing changes. So I guess next year will be as bad as this year. No enegry from the team. Slow motion plays, boring to watch. And defenitely no Superbowl!

We’ll see…after 46 years, I am not jumpin’ up and down for one interview…and I have been here for all 46 years…I don’t care what he did anywhere else…do it here…after all, Blank is demanding a super bowl win….cna you pass the Dan Reeves test and get us to the super bowl?

And one thing more, Dan Reeves got us to the super bowl, has one bad season, we hire Jim Mora, the cheerleader and go straight downhill, Mr. Blank, if you are so perfect and efficient, how did you MANAGE that?

Don’t build on what we’ve got: We have Bend Don’t Break defense here.

Gut it and build something new, Nolan.

Falcons have little room under cap. Here are some players that are overpaid.Have them rework contract or release them.
Chris Redman= 2.5 M. for two plays a year.
Ovie Mughelli=3M. he good, plenty of unemployed fullbacks.
Turner=5M, has been good, but for five M. Not worth it
Sam Baker=1M bust
John Abraham=8M. Plays less than 50 per cent of time. Babin plays full time, makes 1M with Eagles.
Dunta Robinson=5.5M, not worth it. Chis Owen can cover better than Dunta, always blows coverage.
Weems=1.2M , What does he do? Franks,Smith, Walls, Rodgers all can catch ball in end zone and take a knee, or fair catch ball on punts.
These player would reduce cap 26M, I think we could up grade Falcons with younger players with 26M OR go get a game changer pass rusher on FA market that doesn’t take off half of game. Abe has problems staying on field form days with Jets. He has been our best rusher, when healthy. We could use some of that money on O-lineman that can protect Ryan.

Rico, I agree with you. Dan Reeves was our best coach. Mr Blanks wanted him gone, Hired Mckay. That is what we are still trying too undo. Mckay has done a great job in sc**wing up Falcons, same as he did before he left Tampa Bay.

antman……I finally read post I could have written. I do agree, Owens is the fastest player on the team. Now find a way to use im.

But over all the secondary reminds me of coaching under 10 years old girls on a church league. The little girls in the outfield just couldn’t get couldn’t get it through their heads to stop a ball hit to you if front. Stop it in front of you and throw it in. Everyone of them would let the ball roll through their legs, then turn and chase it. Reminds me so much of the Falcon secondary. Let um catch it and then give chase.

I do hope Mr Nolan stops this attitude.

Let’s put the blame where it belongs – bad player evaluation. Look back at the last few drafts and free agent signings and look at all the wash-outs. That said, the biggest thing missing on this team was any creativity in personnel usage or strategy. I hope Nolan takes a good hard look at the personnel and comes up with the best way to put the players in their best opportunity to succeed. That will be a nice change. And Mike Smith needs to leave him alone and Arthur Blank needs to stay in his box.

Disappointed does not cut it!

Love the DC hire, hate the OC hire. Scared that we will run the 4-3 instead of the 3-4, tells me that Smitty is still running the defense…GO FALCONS!

I think the team will improve drastically if we get rid of waste and get upgrades in the draft and free agency at those positions. Get value for turner, ray edwards with his oh so fancy fumble recovery, and babinaux whose over rated. We need big guys on both sides of the line with a talented free safety to push willie mo to his potential. I think if were ready to make those decisions that this is the year.

Very happy we got Nolan. Just hopes he runs it his way because smitty’s way doesnt win championships. If you saw the press conference is apparent that coach is an idiot. We need a different mind running our defense. Stay out of it and play with your x’s and o’s.

Now that the O line coach has been dismissed and made the scapegoat, has anybody heard who will take over the O line and will the linebackers get a new one? I would like to see Singletary put some pep in their tails, without the showboating. That “look at me crap”, get so damn old. It would be nice to see them treat it as though it was their job, matter of fact.

How ’bout the Colts, they have to replace the entire coaching staff. That’s what I call a house cleaning. They will be a real mess next year. Couldn’t happen to a better owner.

A GREAT hire! Welcome to Atlanta Mr. Nolan. We are thankful to get your expertise applied to this up and coming team. Mike Smith is an open minded guy and I personally think that your philosophy of building the defensive plan around the players you have is the key ingredient that has been missing. You will see that a lot of mistakes have been made in zone coverage responsibility while the person doing that remains perhaps one of the fastest and hardest hitting man-to-man coverage guys in the league. That type of analysis and adjustment will take us to the next level and we need your expertise to do that. We fans wish you and your family the best! Please have fun and take it to the next level!
