Falcons hire Mike Nolan as new defensive coordinator

The Falcons hired Mike Nolan, who received his start in coaching from Dan Reeves, as their new defensive coordinator on Tuesday.

He replaces Brian VanGorder, who left the team last week to become Auburn’s new defensive coordinator.

Nolan is considered a 3-4 coach. But Falcons coach Mike Smith’s respect for him from their days together in Baltimore runs deep. They will blend the principles of Nolan’s 3-4 with Smith’s 4-3.

The Falcons hired Dirk Koetter as offensive coordinator on Sunday.

Team owner Arthur Blank expects the new coordinators to bring a new set of eyes and expertise to the team.

“Their ability . . . to be totally objective, cold-hearted and unemotional about the young men that we have on the roster [should be an asset],” Blank said. “[We’ll] bring in some folks that will be able to give us maybe some new perspective, maybe some different perspective not only on team questions, but on player issues that we may have as well.”

Despite revamping the secondary and trying to bolster the pass rush, the Falcons struggled to improve their pass defense. Since 2008, they’ve ranked 21st (2008, 220.4), 28th (2009, 241.9), 22nd (2010, 226.6) and 20th (2011, 236.6).

“Moving forward, this defense needs to continue its growth and evolution as a passionate and fiery defense, one that is going to fly to the football, disrupt, be opportunistic and capitalized on opportunities to turn the game around; flip the game in critical situations,” general manager Thomas Dimitroff said. “We’ll look for a coordinator who will [aid] Coach Smith and his approach to putting that type of aggressive defense on the field.”

Nolan has been a defensive coordinator in the NFL for 14 seasons. He also was San Francisco’s head coach from 2005 to 2008.

“Mike Nolan is an established coordinator in this League,” said Falcons head coach Mike Smith in a statement released by the team. “He brings more than 25 years of NFL experience to our team and has been a coordinator at this level for 14 years. Mike has a history of developing physically intimidating defensive units, and we are fortunate to have him join our staff.”

Nolan spent the last two seasons as the Miami Dolphins’ defensive coordinator.

Last season, the Dolphins boasted the third best run defense in the NFL, allowing just 95.6 yards per game and 3.7 yards per carry. His defense also produced 41 sacks which ranked tied for 10th in the NFL  and allowed the sixth fewest points per game at 19.6. The Dolphins also ranked seventh in third-down percentage (33.8) and sixth in red zone defense, holding opponents to a 44.2 touchdown percentage inside the 20.

In 2010, Nolan’s defense ranked among the league’s top ten in overall defense, pass defense and run defense, and was one of just five units in the League to accomplish that feat. Nolan joined Miami after spending the 2009 season as the defensive coordinator of the Denver Broncos. Under his tutelage, Denver’s defense improved to seventh in the NFL in total defense after finishing 29th in 2008. Denver’s pass defense was equally impressive, ranking third in the NFL, allowing just 186.3 yards per game through the air.

Prior to joining the Broncos’ staff, Nolan served as the San Francisco 49ers’ head coach from 2005 to 2008. During Nolan’s four-year tenure with the club, the 49ers were one of the NFL’s most consistent teams in stopping the run. San Francisco ranked fourth in the league in yards per carry during that period surrendering just 3.9 yards per rush.

Nolan spent four seasons in Baltimore from 2001 to 2004, including the last three as the defensive coordinator. Nolan’s group tied for the NFL lead in takeaways (106) while ranking fifth in the league in both points per game allowed (18.8) and third down percentage (34.7). He also coached five Ravens defenders to nine trips to the Pro Bowl, while tutoring back-to-back AP Defensive Players of the Year in LB Ray Lewis (2003) and S Ed Reed (2004).

The New York Giants made Nolan the NFL’s youngest defensive coordinator in 1993 at the age of 34. He spent the next eight seasons as a defensive coordinator with the Giants (1993-96), Redskins (1997-99) and Jets (2000). In his first year with the Giants, his defense led the League allowing just 12.8 points per game. His coaching career began at his alma mater, Oregon University, where he served as a graduate assistant in 1981. He went on to coach at Stanford University and Rice University as a linebackers and defensive backs coach before the Denver Broncos hired him to be the special teams/linebackers coach in 1987. He spent six seasons with the Broncos and helped the team reach the Super Bowl in the 1987 and 1989 seasons.

Atlanta has the PLAYERS too run it and Mike Nolan is the prefect fit in GA. Mike do not play with the bull so the attitude will be a win and business attitude in GA. I will be a winning Attitude. This was the same man who put together the 49ers Defense and look where they are at now. His problem at that that was Offense. This is a great hire guys… I am happy

interesting hire. What exactly does ‘he’s a 3-4 coach’ mean? There’s not much chance we run it, as we have 4-3 personnel and Smitty is a defensive guy himself…so, we hired a 3-4 guy to run a 4-3?

Great hire. . . it beats waiting to try and fight the Eagles for Spagnoulo. Switching to a hybrid 3-4 won’t be as big of a shock as going to a pure 3-4, and with all of the FAs on defense they might be able to transition pretty quick.

Look for Abraham to be gone, with Weatherspoon and Edwards benefiting most from the switch. Adkins and Dent will see more playing time, Babineaux (if he is still here in 2012) losing some time. We’ll probably also see more man and press coverage in the secondary, which will help Robinson.

Dimitroff said. “We’ll look for a coordinator who will [aid] Coach Smith and his approach to putting that type of aggressive defense on the field.”

That sounds like he’s saying that, no matter who the coach is, we’ll continue to limit blitzes and play the soft zone since that’s what coach Smith wants.
Why not hire experienced coordinators (which we did) and then let them coach to their strengths as well as the strengths of the players. Doesn’t matter if you have 51 flavors if your head coach insists on just serving up vanilla on both sides of the ball.

This is great. I love the hire. Mike Smith is awesome. I hope he is able to continue the prgress he had with Mularkey and VanGorder.
I am 100% certain that he will trust his new coordinators and not micro-manage them into conservative football play-calling oblivion. He would never do that. Nothing in his four-year Falcons history suggests that he would.
This is great. I gotta go call Mom and tell her about this. She’s gonna be so excited. She loves Smitty and will be thrilled to know that Dimitroff is hiring all of his very bestest friends to be his totally empowered co-leaders.

Why is it that folks act as if a HC hiring staff from people they are familiar with and have worked with in the past is such a shock. It happens all the time. Look at Williams leaving NO to go coach with his buddy Fisher. Goes from a first place to last place team to coach with a friend/old co-worker.

And safe hires are great, that means that they should perform to save their head coach’s butt.

What about Heathcliff the cat? Come on! We hired a PROVEN NFL-caliber coordinator. His units turn around no matter where he goes. Denver ran a 4-3 before he came. They switched to 3-4 and Dumervil became a star. I like the hire and really dont care for spoiled fans opinions….guess like Crazy said, we should just go back to when we were perrenial losers. The scheme doesn’t matter if you do not have the defensive personnel. Take a look at each individual on the defensive line then the linebackers. Look at teams that really do play defense and compare their personnel with Falcons’ personnel. Minimal pass rush, minimal sacks, minimal pressure on QB, cannot stop the run nor pass…kinda sums it up. Defense is something the Falcons do because the other team has the ball not because they are really good at it.

They can’t switch overnight to a 3-4, and our roster is currently set for a 4-3. It would take a year at least to change over to the 3-4, but it could be done. Some teams do well in the 3-4. I personally don’t like it, but I’m a 4-3 guy at heart.

My biggest gripe with this hire is that it does seem like Mike Smith and Thomas Dimitroff are setting up a “Good Ol’ Boy” network of coaches. Spagnuolo would likely have been a better hire, but at least we’ve brought in guys that have a history with the Head Coach, so team chemistry won’t have to be built.

D-Led, Nolan is a great coach but this quote below from Dimitroff is very misleading and bogus after watching Mike Smith’s passive defenses for four years.

Moving forward, this defense needs to continue its growth and evolution as a passionate and fiery defense, one that is going to fly to the football, disrupt, be opportunistic and capitalized on opportunities to turn the game around; flip the game in critical situations,” general manager Thomas Dimitroff said. “We’ll look for a coordinator who will [aid] Coach Smith and his approach to putting that type of aggressive defense on the field.” When has Smith’s units in Jacksonville and Atlanta ever been aggressive? Please show me so I can dispute it.

Is AID Mike Smith a Code Word for Vanilla Scheme, Business as Usual, Yes Man, I have a problem with Mike Smith continuing to hire his buddies. If you hired your friends, they will only agree with you and tell you the BS you want to hear. Where will the objectivity come from? When Dimitroff drafts another bust, and he will in April, will the defensive coordinator have the testicles to tell him that he wants someone else and Dimitroff’s choice does not fit his scheme? I doubt it.

Last week on several blogs I stated that Smith would hire his friends to fill both OC/DC positions instead of improving this team, damn if he didn’t prove me right!! This was the one time I was hoping I was wrong about this idiott!!!

Abraham is going to get at least 10 sacks next year. Ray Edwards is going be traded or released. and Bier Man is going to get 10 sacks on the other side. Sidbury is going to be a servicable backup.

Dunta Robinson’s int and pass breakups are going to go up next year because he will FINALLY play man to man cover 0 and 1. that’s his strong suit.

I expect the Falcons to go after Paul Soliai to occupy the all important NT position in the 3-4 Defense, I also see us getting another LB or letting Spencer Adkins or Akeem Dent to play the other LB spot. I also see Babineaux and peters being moved to the DE in the 3-4 Defense and Iexpect ABE to be let go and maybe we go after Mario Williams.

Actually the only thing specific we are missing is a big body in the middle. There are quite a few in the 2012 draft that are projected to go in the 2-4 rounds where we start to draft. Our linebacker corp is athletic. If Ray’s issue was healing from surgery, this year should be a good year and if the Falcons decide to lock him up, the two of them focusing on pass rush because they lineman are focused on the run is real plus. Our issue, of course, is at the safety and cornerback positions. But regardless of what D we run we would have to address that. LOVE this hire. Wanted Spags at first but the idea of running even a hybrid 3-4 is much more appealing.

Some of you people would not be happy if we hired a hybrid Don Shula/Bill Parcels/Vince Lombardi/ Bill Walsh/ Joe Gibbs coach. Rather than read the article which stated, “They will blend the principles of Nolan’s 3-4 with Smith’s 4-3″, you just throw up your hands and automatically succumb to failure. Thank God you people were not in charge of our country during World War II, or we would be speaking German, Japanese, or dead. Sheesh, give the man a chance!

Makes perfect sense to me, we run a 4 3 and have 4 3 personnel, he is a 3 4 guy, so we will run a hybrid. I predict in a year, they will be saying we need 3 4 personnel for this to work. Failed miserably as the 49ers head coach and this is his 7th DC job the longest of which lasted 4 four years (his first one), and the shortest of which (two) lasted one year. So his average tenure as a DC is 2.3 years.

True Falcon

At least this guy has some descent stats. Dirk on the other hand had the worst offense in football.

Michael M.

January 17th, 2012
4:12 pm

@ Ichabod ……………….3-4 defense looks for much bigger linemen who can engage offensive linemen on the line of scrimmage and keep blockers off the linebackers as they work down the line of scrimmage. Linemen in the 3-4 want to command a double-team block; 4-3 linemen want to beat a single block every time. A hybrid defense wants its linemen to be able to do either thing when asked

Linebackers have their own issues to deal with when switching from one package to another. Linebackers in the 4-3 defense are slightly shaded behind defensive linemen, which makes it difficult to get a blocker on them right away. Teams like the Buccaneers get away with undersized, but fast, linebackers because it is hard to block them. In a 3-4 defense, the inside linebackers have to be big and physical, because they regularly line up directly over guards who can easily get up on the backers.

I am loving this hire!! We finally have a guy that gets results!! Falcon fans now we can start to look for the Falcon defense to get more takeaways giving the offense more posessions and giving them a short field with these oppurtunities, now we should see more points from the offense. The Falcon defense will get teams off the field on 3rd down now and we can expect better designed blitzes. Mike Nolan will make Dirk Koetter’s job a little easier.

Don;t go typing facts like that on here, they will only ridicule you for posting positives about Smitty. I said the same thing yesterday when losers tried to say Van Gorder was aggressive and it was Smitty who was the problem. So i presented them the statistical data that as a DC, Smitty’s units were never lower than 12th in the league in total defense(only once was it that low) and were 2nd overall at one point, not to mention his defenses were only out of the top 7 in sacks just ONCE. But yes, I can see their point, it must have been Smitty……riiiiight

Nice move, Falcons. John Abraham will stand up at OLB. Ray Edwards might as well, or take a few trips to Golden Corral and become the 5-technique. Spoon and Lofton may be the best LB tandem in the league after this move. And that says a lot, considering Willis and Bowman in SF are excellent. The secondary will be better because they can sack the QB and get pressure with 4-5 rushers. Look for the Jones kid out of UGA to get drafted. Not sure how they will check Jimmy Graham, but should make for some good games.

Big Dude, after Gregg Williams blitzed us into the offseason, I think it was a clean break. Carmichael and WR coach Johnson moving on would be huge. They are instrumental in the development of our stars: Brees, Graham, Colston. I like Spagnuolo, although I would be comfortable with a more conservative DC because we can score with anyone. Also, that would help get rid of Harper at SS because we would need a ball-hawking type instead. Not only can’t he cover, but he can’t make INTs either. We could also bring in a couple of safeties that got cut last year because they didn’t fit well with Williams.

I hope Nolan wins the argument with Smith and converts to a total 3-4. I was just thinking the other day that’s a better defense with NO and Carolina in the NFC South. Now sign Grimes and Lofton. Don’t resign Abraham he lost a step and can’t handle NO’s OTs. Get a NT (maybe Peters can do it if he beefs up and gets healthy) and a LB who can blitz. I think Edwards, Babs and Jerry would be better ends in a 3-4 D. I think you can roll in Dent and Adkins at LB but you really need another athletic LB like Weatherspoon to play a 3-4.

Mike Nolan is an established coordinator in this league,” said Falcons head coach Mike Smith. “He brings more than 25 years of NFL experience to our team and has been a coordinator at this level for 14 years. Mike Nolan meet “spoon” then turn his a** loose against Brees and Rogers. Sidbury is ready to take Abes place and Akeem Dent is ready to get into the mix as well. If Dirk can utilize Quiz, Harry D., and Kerry Mier the offense wbe good enough to go to the S.B. Think of all the average Qbs (and offenses )that went to the SB ( or are still in the playoffs now )with a good defense. A darn good defense is all the falcons need. Just wait and see. Easy to see why Smitty would want Mike Nolan to take the Falcon’s defense to the next level in the playoffs. When he arrived the falcons were in a mess with QB in court and the old coach deserting the team. He was fortunate to secure the coaches he got, but now under his leadership the team has attained some respect. Now we can get quality experienced coordinators who can blend the strengths we now enjoy with the skills we need to reach that competitiveness in the playoffs and ultimately the “Super Bowl”.How many teams left in the playoffs run a 4/3. Smitty will learn a lot from Mike Nolan, and maybe Nolan will learn a few things from Smitty and we will come out with a defense no one can predict. Go Falcons!!!!!!!!

I have to disagree with those who say Van Gorder was a bad coordinator. The Falcons simply don’t have the speed in the secondary that they need even though the pass rush improved some this year. VG did a decent job. If you want to find a scapegoat for the season, blame Mularkey all day. The Falcons didn’t achieve as expected because of offensive inconsistency. Nolan’s a good hire. He did a lot with Miami’s previously unexceptional crew and his defenses perform consistently well. The Falcons might be better served by the 3-4, as they have plenty of talented linebackers and good DTs who can rush the passer.

I don’t understand why people seem to think that just because Nolan is good with a 3-4, he will struggle with a 4-3. I would be willing to bet that he and Smitty are familiar with just about every defense out there, including Buddy Ryans 4-6 defense that the Bears were so successful with. All the defenses out there use a number of variations, depending on the situation, and match-ups. For instance, Dallas runs a 3-4 most of the time, but often run something similar to a 4-6 in 3rd down situations.

Keep in mind that there are two very different types of 3-4 schemes.

The classic two-gap system has the nose tackle line up directly on the center. He has to be able to control his point and shed the center to cover the A-gap on either side. You need a big NT (B.J. Raji or Vince Wilfork) for that one. We simply don’t have the big guy to do it. We’d need to land a starter AND a suitable backup. That’s probably a deal-breaker right there.

But the other (single gap) system is far more likely to work with our personnel. That one is really close to what we’re doing right now anyway, especially when you consider how often we rush a linebacker on one side while dropping a DE into coverage or how we played the 3-3-5 nickel package throughout the 2010 season.

You have seven guys defending seven lanes, and the linemen line up on the gaps rather than the linemen. At the snap, they attack and try to penetrate into the backfield. The nose tackle is on the A-gap, not on the center. All he has to do is attack his one lane. He wins in any of three ways – penetrate the line, draw a double team, or hold the point and force the run to go outside.

You don’t need Jabba The Lineman to pull it off. A smaller DT that can attack the gap would be ideal – such as Jay Ratliffe of the Cowboys, who is smaller than any of our four defensive tackles. Corey Peters or Vance Walker could do it, and that kind of penetration capability is supposedly the reason why Dimitroff drafted Peria Jerry in the first place.

All of you complaining about Nolan’s hiring……chill…out!! This guy is an absolute proven winner EVERYWHERE he’s gone. That means he and the personnel he’s coaching transition very well.

All you so-called defensive experts, what makes you think the Falcons won’t make the necessary changes to effectively move to the 3-4? It may take 2 years to complete the transition, but so what??

Did you WATCH our defense the past couple of years? We’re gonna have to remake our personnel packages anyway – why hire a “4-3 guy” just to fit our mediocre roster???

They will find a nose tackle…..and you think Weatherspoon has been good so far – just wait until he’s unleashed with the new system. I’ll also go out on a limb and say that Dunta Robinson will show a lot in 2012.

As far as Smitty hiring guys he knows – that happens all the time in the NFL. You don’t want a complete maverick as a coordinator, fighting upstream all the time with the HC.

This is a great hire!! Softens the blow of my less than enthusiastic response to the new OC….who by the way will be better than everyone thinks, as long as doesn’t think Michael Turner can do what Jones-Drew has been doing – Turner is near the end. Better show up at training camp around 230 lbs. Any slower, and he could be timed with a sundial.

His defense was the only thing worth watching from the Miami Dolphins. if I was the coach i would have made the same hire because spags is known for his exotic bliz packages using safieties and other secondary and our seconday isnt good enough to do that. Mike nolan is known for using lb blizes and our lb crew is perfect for that.
All we need to do now is get a couple more players and reunite Mike singletary with nolan as his lb coach, and our defense will be similar to the music that gerogia is known for called Crunk, Whatttttttttttt! Okayyyyyyyyyyy!

If all I knew about the Falcons now was what I saw from reading many of the comments so far, I’d be slitting my wrists.

Questions for all the monday morning coaches, GMs and QBs:

Name any Falcons’ coach that has had a better record than Mike Smith.

How many teams in the league have better records since Smith took over the HC job here?

Wonder what the Green Bay fans think about the Pack’s one and done loss to the Jints? What will GB do about it?

the falcons defense will not get better until they get a solid pass rush , and fix the secondary. move grimes to another position, get another corner, im not real sure about Dunta , i dont know if he can play single coverage any better than the rest of them.fix it ,or prepare for the same results next year or worse.

There’s an old saying, “The devil you know vs the devil you don’t know.” With Smith hiring his old cronies, he’s hiring the devil he knows. He knows what they can do…and what they can’t do. This is not the time to hire the “devil you know.” It’s time to take a bold. We won’t get to the Super Bowl this way. Smith wants “yes men” around him. They’re not going to being anything new.

The teams who are consistent winners are those who continue to build over the long haul and don’t over re-act to every disappointing loss. Organizations who fire their head coaches every 2-4 years are not winning on a regular basis. The Falcons are finally relevant and some of you want to run Coach Smith out of town. He’s never had a losing season as the Falcons Head Coach and no other head coach in Falcons history can say that. Jeff Fisher who is esteemed as the top pick of the Head Coaches to hire this year only finished above .500 six of his 16 seasons as the Head Coach of the Oilers/Titans. The playoff win(s) will come. FYI: Have any of you noticed how well the teams that have knocked the Falcons out of the playoffs have done. The Cardinals went to the Super Bowl and almost won. The Packers won the Super Bowl before going 15-1 this year. The Giants are playing their best football right now and may very well get to the Super Bowl themselves. The Falcons will enter the playoffs while hitting their stride in due time, but until they do keep some perspective would you.

Good solid hire. Our defense, while definitely needing improvement in spots, is not the problem with this franchise. Top 5 in NfC in total d, top 12 in the NFL. That’s pretty good, certainly not indicative of a bust. Nolan should create a sense of toughness with this group and challenge them, make them better. Our new boy DIRK on the other hand has his work cut out for him.

I say let abraham walk. Babineaux moves to DE while peters plays nose. Edwards is a perfect DE for this system. Spoon and lofton in the middle. With money freed up from Abraham sign a OLB and draft another. Nicholas should be on special teams so idk why we gave him a 5 year deal. If grimes leaves we might be okay after all. Or get Carlos Rogers from SF. Franks starts opposite of dunta Owens comes in as a nickelback but plays outside. Move dunta or franks to slot. Let darrin walls play, he’s got the ability to be special. Get rid of decoud, bring back sanders to mentor a safety that we draft. I’m happy to see Nolan in Atlanta. Also, draft a tightend. And steal one of the guards from New Orleans.

Look, until they FIX THE OFFENSIVE LINE it won’t matter who they bring in. You can not win in this league with a make-shift o-line with a deer in the headlights QB behind it. I like Matt Ryan, but when “that moment” arrives, be it a MNF game, any prime time game, or a playoff game – dude ish his drawers cause the o-line looks like turnstiles at Marta on a free day, so we have to protect him like he was made of china. WE can not do that with this o-line I don’t care what the stats are saying. Most of those stats, and this absolutely kills me when it comes to our o-line apologists, come against crappy teams with crappy d-lines and its been this way FOREVER. WE gotta fix this, or else everything else is for naught. Unless Mike Nolan is going to make our defense an over the top great one like the Ravens are/were where we won’t have to score much, there isn’t much to get happy about and that’s just being real. It is time for Blank to stop putting up $$$ for pretty named skilled players and get that offensive line in order. It starts in the trenches people! I like where the defense (outside of the secondary with no disrespect to Optimus Grimes) is headed, but mannnn I’m getting tired of our not so primetime swiss cheese o-line. If we don’t get it right in the trenches, this is much ado about nothing. At least I hope these new guys tell Smitty and TD this, which btw they SHOULD already know.

Do we have the personnel for a 3-4? That’s a funny question given we obviously didn’t have the personnel for a 4-3. Our DT’s were ok. Our DE’s were ok. Our LB’s were better than the others.

My opinion we only really need a hoss of a DT and maybe one LB to make the transition. That being said .. Nolan is one of the few guys that I think could figure out how to coach both schemes effectively. In fact, in today’s NFL, you run both schemes frequently anyway, going 3-4 and sliding an LB up in semi-frequent situations, or going 4-3 and sliding a DE into coverage.

Van Gorder put together a solid defense without any real stars. I liked him, but we all knew he had a history of changing teams. Nolan does as well, but I think if he finds the right situation he could be here for a few years.

Heck Houston switched in one year and look where it got them! And BTW, we need to see Smith the way the titans did with Fisher and the way Steelers do with their coaches. Keep him for the long haul. I just read that Carl Nicks isn’t leaving New Orleans. He will be tagged instead of Brees. The Saints coach Sean Payton said Brees and Nicks are the most important players and they will get there money. They also might let Colston walk and re-sign Meachem for a cheaper price than Colston. I also heard the Saints are trying to sign Vincent Jackson from the Chargers if Colston walks. I don’t know whats worse: Saints might land Spaggs and sign Vincent Jackson or the fact the Saints will sign Carl Nicks so we don’t get him. Plus, there OC Pete Carmicheal might not leave the Saints to be the Raiders HC. Just when you think the saints are done, they come back even stronger. I don’t see us winning the NFC South next year.

Listen up everyone. We are not going to fully convert to the 3-4 defense. We will run both at various times throughout the game. For instance if you put ray edwards, babineaux, and peters as the lineman, you can have abraham, biermann or possibly sidbury as the rush linebackers and weatherspoon and lofton as the inside backers, just to give teams a different look and throw them off. Great hire! Excited to read what Nolan says about 3-4 vs 4-3. This may be what the defense needs-it allows them to add one player, a NG, and improve the entire defense. The young DE’s, MAtthews and Sidbury can play rush LB, Nicholas can play on the other side OLB, and Babineaux is a natural 5 technique DE. This may even save Jerry’s career if he can play the other 5 technique. The two top tacklers, Spoon and Lofton, will be free inside to run and hit. Everything is predicated on a two gap NT obsorbing blocks. Take a look at N. Jean Batiste in this weeks East West Shrine game, he’s 6′2″ 320 and runs a 5.02. Right now projected as a 5th rounder.

Last week I was hoping that we sign Nolan as DC, but then I heard he runs the 3-4 and so I figured we would look elsewhere for a DC. However I see now that Smitty still hires him. He has a proven record, but do we have the people to run the 3-4. I remember when Wade Phillips tried to run the 3-4 here some years ago and had people out of position, because we did bot draft for that scheme.
I cannot see how this can be successful, but I pray that I am wrong.

All you haters need to look at his numbers. Numbers don’t lie!! Smith didn’t say they will run the 3-4 defense. It says they will run a hybrid, or mixture if you will. Damn read before commenting ppl. Free agency is close to starting, and I’m sure new defensive personnel will be brought in to compliment the type of defense they want to run. I love the hire. Good hire if the Falcons plan on going to the 3-4 which they should. The best way to beat teams like the Saints, Packers, and Patriots is a 3-4 since these team run this defense also. The last time the Falcons went to the Super Bowl was under a 3-4 defense(Wade Phillips). If the Falcons would of drafted Patrick Willis instead of Jamal Anderson(bust). It should of been Willis, Lofton, Weatherspoon, and a hometown product like Phillip Wheeler(Georgia Tech) at linebackers. Get rid of Ray Edwards, put Abraham,Peters, and Babineaux at DL. Get a outside and a inside linebacker. Put William Moore at strong safety, get a ball hawking Free Safety and a Good corner and lets ride out. Also need a young stud running back like Richardson(Alabama). BIRD FOR LIFE!!!!!!!!

I like both hires. Pat Yasinskas, the NFC South blogger for ESPN checked with Paul Kuharsky, the AFC South blogger for ESPN, who told him Dirk Koetter is a highly respected OC in the NFL. I like what he said about keeping the parts of the Falcons offense we do well, even if it is not part of his normal scheme or philosophy, and then improving other areas where we are not so good. He is known for having a vertical passing game – something we have lacked. He needs to hire a QB coach whose specialty is developing a QBs ability to throw an accurate deep ball. The lack of an accurate deep ball is Matt Ryans only weakness.

BVG improved the Falcons defense “statistically” every year he was here, but it was not enough. I am glad he is gone and now Mike Nolan is here. I am confident the Falcons can switch to a 3-4 defense immediately. The only player we lack is the gigantic NT now, and I do not think it will be impossible to get one in free agency and/or the draft, or both so we also have a back-up.

I guess we can blame Eugene Robinson for all fans that remember that debacle,,, maybe if we could talk to the wizard of oz we could ask for a set of nads for Ryan a brain for smitty…some stickum for roddy..a new offensive line…and for Dante Robinson to get another job like jamaal Anderson

I wonder who decided to offer him the position? It certianly wasn’t Smith or Dimitroff or McKay because I think this is actually a SMART move, so it DEFINITELY rules the three of them out–a veteran NFL coach!!! Ah yes, of course, “he coached with Mike Smith at Baltimore….” More cronyism!! That tells me that “Smitty” still has too much “control” of things. Especially bringing in a 3-4 coach to run a 4-3 system.

Spags had great personnel in New York when they won the Super Bowl, but he did’t do S H * T in St. Louis! Granted the Rams had the injury bug last year, but they were horrible!!! With the exception of Chris Long, he wasn’t able to groom any of his defensive draft picks into being stars. Nolan is an all around better coach than Williams. All Williams knows how to do is blitz, which cost him his job!

It’s no surprise that Mike Smith hired someone he is familiar with! That happens all the time. Continue playing Madden 2012 and living in your fantasy world while the Falcons win ball games!!!

I think they have gotten this one right. I think they picked a good DC. He has been good wherever he has been.I love this coach, think he will be better than spag!
We have players that can run the 3-4. Nose tackles does not have to be 350 lbs. Wade Phillips does not use big nose tackles. When he was with falcons Ed Jasper didn’t weight 300lbs and was a very good nose tackle. Raliff with cowboys is a good nose tackle.
We will have a defense now if Smith will stay out of Nolan business.

I believe to win championships you have either have an exceptional (top 5)defence or offense. You can get by with either side being average, they just have to play up to their potential or better in the playoffs. However you your top 5 offense or defense has to perform and carry you. The final 4 teams this year either have exceptional offences or defenses in combination with an average unit performing above expectations. The Falcons need to decide if they have the quarterback to be top 5 in offense. I believe not. So they better focus on improving the defence. Similar to San Fran. or Baltimore.

Three things this hire does for the Falcons:

1. Dunta Robinson will no longer have to play zone coverage. In Houston, he excelled in playing tight man coverage, and keep in mind he had to play Harrison and Wayne twice a year. He was bred to play in a man-cover scheme. It’s what he did in college at South Carolina and that’s what Houston drafted him to do. In Atlanta, his cover skills have been exponentially under-utilized due to the cover 2 zones BVG used. Expect big things in ‘12 from Dunta.

2. Gives us a multitude of options as far as who/what our scheme uses. Big time FA on the market this year that would fit well in a 3-4 defense. IF we let Abe walk, and IF we let Lofton walk(I doubt Lofton leaves), then we could pick up Mario Williams, Robert Mathis is out there, NT from Miami everyone keeps talking about (which isn’t unlikely considering where Nolan just came from), and two or three other good defensive backs.

3. FINALLY brings a sound PROFESSIONAL defensive approach to the team. BVG was solid, at the very best of days, while heading the defensive unit. Nolan has never known anything but success with his defensive teams. He sets standards high and if you don’t meet them, expect to be cut or replaced.

I’m quite looking forward to what the 2012 season will bring to the ATL. Is it July yet? :)

@ Gritsfalcons–how is a 3-4 a college defense when colleges run 4-3’s? It is why it is difficult to draft for those defenses and teams who run it have to draft on potential and talent as opposed to proven guys. There aren’t a lot of guys that come out of college with the girth that is normally coveted for the 3-4 defense.

Now that he’s assemble what I think he’s invisioned, there are not more excuses. Scheme matters in defense, putting players in the right places is 90% of success. Dan Reeves was brilliant at it. I think Nolan and his defense in Miami keep them in a lot of games due to the inept offense. We will see though.

whether the falcons run the 3-4 or 4-3 the important thing is to not be predictable to the offense. The good teams put 6-7 on the line and you have to guess who’s rushing. The falcons put four up front and have the linebackers so deep the offense can know for sure who to block. The falcons are too predictable and try to beat teams straight up.

I’ve been a Falcon fan since ‘66 and a Dawg fan forever but I think I’ll spend my weekends at the golf coures from now on. Nothing will ever change for either of these teams. Take a tip from the 49’s and Alabama. Good coaching can turn a team around in 1 (one) year,we don’t have that with either team and I wonder if we ever will. You have to pay for good people.

This is going to be a great hire.

After the schedule was released I was thinking 9-7 season, now with these new coaches and some new faces in place for the players, I am thinking these two guys will add a couple of wins to our season.

So we should go at least 11-5 even with the tough schedule.

If all of you that keep bashing all the moves the Falcons make were as smart as you think you are you would all be NFL gm’s or head coaches. The Falcons might fall flat on their A$$, but until they play the games, who knows.

New coaching strategy good- thats only half the problem- the other is personnel- many upgrades need at D-Line, linebacker, cornerback. We don’t have high draft pick options to get them. Is the new coach going to perform magic over the waiver wire? We have same issue with new offensive coordinator. Trading away Harvey Dahl was pick mistake.

I’m happy with this. I can live with it. He has a good track record and he’s coached some talented players. Hopefully he’ll make our players better.

I’m much more excited about the DC hire than the OC hire.

Fire Smith NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Arthur, quit shooting BLANKS regarding making the tough decision that is needed. Smith doesn’t have it betwist the ears (duhhh, defense) to properly delegate to coordinators in an efficient manner, while still giving them the lattitude they need to manage their area as they see fit until such time as it doesn’t work. Doesn’t matter who they hire as support staff until he is GONE!
If you’ve already forgotten-4th and 1, with Ryan in an empty backfield set. NEXT!

Hire Jon Gruden NOW, and then fill in the gaps.

Arthur Blank sais “Their ability . . . to be totally objective, cold-hearted and unemotional about the young men that we have on the roster [should be an asset],” Blank said. “[We’ll] bring in some folks that will be able to give us maybe some new perspective, maybe some different perspective not only on team questions, but on player issues that we may have as well.”

If this is true, then at least some of the “playing the favorites” and not the best will disappear. We all know there were times in every game that the personnel on the field for certain plays were not right. Perhaps Smitty will hold back and let Mike use his players as the situation dictates. This could signal an end to the “good old boy” philosophy the Smitty has fostered on this team.

Um, to the naysayers on this hire, you guys realize Mike Nolan is the one that built that nasty defense out in San Fran, right? Maybe you didn’t notice that they shut down nearly everyone. We are about to get a top ten defense in the ATL for the first time in a long time. Thank GOD!

You can not run a 3-4 without a big bodied nose tackle…The Falcons don not have one on their roster and will unlikely be able to get good one without a No. 1 pick in the 2012 draft….Nolan will have to run a 4-3 this year but will sprinkle some 3-4 with Sidbury and Bierman used as ends/linebackers…I do like the hire of Nolan..He will make everyone accountable and will have the respect of the defensive locker room…His defenses have been consistently good over the past 3-4 years.

First order of business will be determining what defensive free agents the Falcons will be bringing back for 2012…I see Lofton and Grimes as a must sign since we do not have a No. 1 pick this year…Big decisions on Abes and DeCoud..The O-line needs to be shored up and we still do not have a center in waiting to replace McClure (also a FA this year) since Hawley has been moved to guard.

The off-season will be an interesting one for both MS and TD…The pieces are there to make a SB run but we still lack sufficient playmakers on the defensive side of the ball. Signing Lofton and Grime would be a start but this will not be enough to get us over the top. Edwards underachieved this year and needs a bounceback in 2012…Robinson has been here two years and is not the shutdown corner we need…Can you say “CUT”….\

I guess all the negative comments about the Falcons sells newspapers and keeps this blog going, but next year is a new season and the Falcons certanly have a shot at making the playoffs and perhaps getting to the SB. All many guys want to do is criticize – which is OK except I’ll take where the Birds are now every day from where they were from ‘66 to ‘07.

Firing everyone off of a playoff team and starting over would be ludricous – yeah I know the Saints did it once but that was when they were the”Aint’s” and were 2-14 or something. All you guys who pointed the the Saints as the greatest thing since sliced bread, you see where they are now. The same place as the Birds – out after their 1st game. Let’s play next year’s schedule and see what happens before we torch next year’s team.

Like this move much better than the O-Coordinator hire. I think it will be effective to change our schemes around often, incorporating both the 4-3 and the 3-4.

I don’t keep up with OC’s & DC’s from other teams unless we talk about them here or some articles are printed. Sounds like most like Nolan & don’t like Koetter. I’m just happy we have different coordinators and I hope MS won’t micro-manage them. Hopefully he has learned. I hope Nolan does a good job as expected and also hope Koetter is a better pick than most think. At least we will have screens.
