Q&A: New OC Dirk Koetter shares his philosophy

Dirk Koetter (Associated Press)

Dirk Koetter (Associated Press)

FLOWERY BRANCH – New Falcons offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter participated in a conference call with the local media today.

He met with quarterback Matt Ryan for about an hour during the interview process.

Koetter said he has more film study to do on the Falcons, but stated that he’s a proponent of the vertical passing game, running the football and that he’s been ordered to improve the team’s screen passing attack.

Here’s what he had to say:

Q: What are your thoughts on being named the offensive coordinator of the Atlanta Falcons?

A: (Laughs!) Obviously, I’m thrilled to be named. It’s a chance for me to work inside a great organization with a tremendous coaching staff led by coach [Mike] Smith and a team that’s got a great group of players. Who wouldn’t be excited about that.

Q: Will you bring your offense? Or will you be keeping what’s here? And, where does the no-huddle fit in your operation?

Well, I think probably a combination. I don’t know if anybody owns any offenses out there. There is a lot of good offense out there. I think it would be a combination of things that I have done in the past and things that Atlanta has done well in the past. I think it would be foolish to not build on some of the things that Atlanta is already doing very well and take advantage of those coaches that are going to remain on the staff and what they’ve done. Definitely, watching from afar, Atlanta played well in the no-huddle. Talking to Matt Ryan, that is something that Matt is excited about so the no-huddle will certainly be a part of it. What percentage is still to be determined.

Q: Have you gone back and looked at that film of the Jacksonville game?

A: That is one of the few films that I have seen because with the coaching change, I haven’t been able to get to all of my film the last few days. I’m anxious to watch all of the games. That will be one of my first orders of business when I get there. I did watch that game. Obviously, the Falcons played tremendous that night when we played them. They were on fire that night. I’m anxious to watch all 16 of them.

Q: What can you share about your conversions with Matt Ryan?

A: I’m looking forward to working with Matt. I had studied Matt when he came out of Boston College four years ago. I loved him at the time. Since we practiced against Atlanta the last two years, I got to see him in those settings as well. I had met him a couple of times before. I’d always been impressed. I had a chance to sit down with him the other day for about an hour or so. You can tell that Matt is a guy who really understands offensive football. He’s got a great passion for not only playing, but winning. I couldn’t be more excited to work with Matt as well as some of the excellent players that they have on that offensive group.

Q: Have you studied some of the other offensive personnel, other than the big wideouts and Tony [Gonzalez]? Players like Kerry Meier, Harry Douglas and Jacquizz Rodgers and how they might fit into the operation?

A: I’ve been locked out of my film. I haven’t had a chance to look at them. Julio for example, I studied him coming out for the draft a year ago. Guys that I studied for the draft, I have watched their college tape. . . . what some of those guys have done statistically, speaks for itself. Roddy [White], Tony Gonzalez, Michael Turner with back-to-back 1,300 yards, everybody can read the stats and know that those guys have excellent skill players there. How everything fits together, that will be stuff that we’ll be working on once I get up there.

Q: Folks want a playoff win badly. What would you say to this fan-base about what you hope to do given that you all have not been extremely successful on offense in Jacksonville?

A: Sure, yeah. Well, the Falcons have done very well over the last four years. You’ve got to make it to the playoffs first. They’ve done a good job of that. I’ve got to come in there and just do the best job that I can in trying to help everybody be the best that they can be. That’s all any coach can do. The fact that I’ve

got experience working [with] Mike Smith and I have tremendous respect for him as a leader and as a coach as well as the other members of that coaching staff and what they’ve already done . . . there is pressure everywhere. Nobody puts more pressure on me than I put on myself. All I can say is that I’ll be extremely dedicated to the task at hand and I’ll understand the task at hand.

Q: Are you still convinced that running the football is that big a part of professional football?

A: Running the football is definitely a part of professional football. That’s never going to go away. I’m a big believer in the vertical passing game. Every where I’ve been we’ve had an element of the vertical game. Your offense is always going to be dictated to some extent by your personnel. Every team in the NFL knows that you have to be able to run it even when they know you’re going to run it. You have to be able to throw it even when they know you’re going to throw it. Running the football, there’s definitely still a place for that in the NFL. You ask any defensive coach and one of the hardest things to defend is balance. Balance is difficult to defend. When you have got the weapons that Atlanta has in the skill positions, both in the pass game and the run game, I think you’d be foolish not to take advantage of everything that has to offer. But there are various ways to get guys the ball. You have to get playmakers the ball with a chance to make plays. There are different ways to do that. Obviously, the no-huddle, the screen-game, the play-action game, but there is definitely a time and place to run the football. In my five years in Jacksonville that was the strength of this team. When I first came here we had two tremendous backs in Fred Taylor and Maurice Jones-Drew. It continued after Fred left with Maurice. Obviously, they have a similar situation there in the running game with Michael Turner.

Q: What is your timetable for being on site here?

A: Soon. Those details are being worked out today. I expect to be in Atlanta sometime later this week. The details of that are still being finalized as we speak. I’m anxious to get there and get started.

Q: With Green Bay and New Orleans losing, the two flashiest offenses in the NFL are out of the playoffs. What are you observations just watching this scenario over the last couple of days?

A: That’s why you play the games. Everybody wants to say it’s a passing league. Defense doesn’t matte

Atlanta Falcons running back Michael Turner (33) rushes in the first quarter of an NFL football game against the New Orleans Saints in New Orleans, Monday, Dec. 26, 2011. AP

r. Running the ball doesn’t matter. But then look at what happened this weekend. The 49ers played a tremendous game and they are more of running and defensive team. They knocked out New Orleans, who was as hot as anybody. Then you know, Green Bay, arguably the best passing offense on the planet, gets beat at home by a hot Giants team. You guys know all too well how hot the Giants are. Again, that’s why we play the games. There are so many big things that go into winning and losing; the chemistry of the team, being hot at the right time, injuries, who’s healthy and who’s not. There are so many things that go into it. Today, here we are [and] we’re talking about little specifics of are we going to be a vertical passing team, are we going to be no-huddle team; in today’s NFL you have to be able to do everything well. It’s such a matchup game and it’s such a situational game, you’ve got to be able win some games in shootouts. You have to be able to win some games when there is bad weather and you’ve got to grind it out and run the ball. There are going to be some bad weather games not in Atlanta, but on the road. There are just so many possibilities and I think this weekend, this playoff scenario, just made that obvious to everyone.

Q: The Falcons struggled with the blocking while trying to throw the vertical passes early last season and the screen game didn’t work arguably because of the blocking. How do you coach that up or try to add that to the attack here.”

A: Some of these questions, I’ll be more prepared to answer after I’ve studied the tape a little bit more. I’m a big believer in the screen game and I don’t know anything about the issues [with pass protection.] But I’m a big believer in the screen game. Coach Smith has mentioned to me that he would like us to be a better screen team and that’s definitely a part of what we’ll try to do there. As far as the pass protection,

until I take a look at the tape and study that a little bit more, I’m just not able to say at this point in time.

Q: Who were your coaching influences?

A: Definitely, if you look around, there are a lot of guys that are the sons of coaches and I’m one of those guys. My father was a high school and a college coach. I grew up a football junky. I wanted to be a coach because I wanted to be like my Dad. Then after getting on the move and moving around the country as a college coach I had the good fortune of working for Vic Rowen at San Francisco State and it was a three man staff. Vic Rowen, myself and Andy Reid. Andy and I coach together at three different schools – San Francisco State, UTEP and Missouri. I’ve been around Andy. I went to Boston College. I was hired by Tom Coughlin and then retained by Dan Henning. I learned a lot of football from Dan Henning. Dan had won two Super Bowls as the offensive coordinator under coach [Joe] Gibbs with the Redskins. I learned a lot of football from Dan, who was a very successful coach in the NFL. Also, in the college ranks [I was with] Mike Bellotti at Oregon. Mike certainly did a lot of things that were a little bit ahead of his time. He did a lot of offensive things. I’ve been fortunate that I’ve been a play-caller for like 25 years. I’ve been able to experiment and do a lot of things and come up with things that I like to do. Now, after five years in the NFL and working with some great coaches and great players, I think I’ve learned a lot. I’ve been able to study all of the best coaches in the NFL over the last five years. I feel like I’m prepared for this job and I’m looking forward to it.

Q: How much credit do we give you for establishing the winning foundation at Boise

Ryan in the preseason against the Steelers.

Ryan in the preseason against the Steelers.

 State?

A: (Laughs) That’s up to you, how much credit you give me. But, we got that Boise State thing going. I was the head coach there for three years and had an awesome staff. When I left, Dan Hawkins took it. Dan had been on my staff. Chris Peterson and I were together at Oregon. Chris took it from Hawk and I’m very, very proud of what Boise State has accomplished over the last 12 years. I’m proud of the role I played in it. But Coach Hawk and Coach Pete have definitely taken it higher and higher. Coach Pete is doing a tremendous job there now.

Q: Where did your dad coach?

A: My Dad was a high school coach at Pocatello, Idaho and later was the head coach at Idaho State.

Q: At Jacksonville you had some uncertainty at the quarterback position for the last couple of years. What’s it like from your perspective, coming into a situation where you have an established front-line quarterback and you know what he can do?

A: This is a quarterback-driven league right now. So much is put on the quarterbacks each week, not only throwing the ball, but getting you out of bad plays, avoiding turnovers. Matt has proven over his first four years that he belongs in the upper echelon of quarterbacks in the league. It’s a great opportunity for me to come in there and work with Matt. I think the teams in the league, and there are several, that don’t have what they consider to be an elite quarterback are always trying to get one. Teams that do have one are glad that they have one and are trying to build around them. The Falcons have done a nice job of building around Matt. I’m looking forward to getting in there and working with those guys.

Q: Did you speak to Matt before or after you were hired?

A: Before.

Hey D-Led

I actually wrote yesterday that i believe the biggest change we’ll see in this new scheme is the intergration of a multifacited screen game into our playbook. I listened to the interview, DK seemed to sidestep the question about the O-Line coach, do you have an idea if he’s got is own guy he’s gonna bring in or if we’ll retain Paul B? Also any ideas about who we’ll be bringing in as the QB coach since ours left with MM to the Jags?

Mike Smith – You are officially on the clock. Get ‘er Done! No excuses.

The Saints, 49er’s Packers, and dare I say the Lions have passed your team (OUR TEAM) by. The Panthers are closing fast.

The Eagles will certainly improve next year and the Giants will remain strong. Chicago with Cutler back and the Cowboys are all in the mix next year. We are looking at at potential 8-8 season or 9-7 record next year and missing the playoffs.

Sure hope Koetter is all you hoped he would be for YOUR sake.

And to Arthur Blank and Thomas DimWit….good luck on selling those season tickets!

Giving this guy (or Hawkins) any credit for what Chris Peterson has accomplished at Boise is like giving Ray Goff (or Donnan) credit for Richt’s two SEC titles and 2 BCS Bowl wins.

Peterson is the guy who beat AQ teams. Peterson is the guy who beat Georgia, who has two BCS Bowl wins.

As for Koetter, mentioning “screen passes” is kind of the opiate of the masses around here, but I’m far more concerned with his instance on a “vertical” passing game, as opposed to spreading the field and using slant routes and such, routes that are designed to gain YAC with your tremendous athletes at receiver.

Also, DOL, your leading the question about the “flashy” offenses losing ignores the fact the Patriots destroyed Denver and the Giants THROW more than they run the ball, and they use those short, quick drops and short routes to receivers like Cruz to make explosive plays.

Nice try there, trying to lead Koetter into taking up for your antiquated idea of what it takes to win in the NFL, but the reality of the modern NFL is, you throw to set up the run.

Which brings us to the other delusion that’s taken hold in Flowery Branch, and why I don’t trust anything that Koetter says and why I believe Arthur Blank lied to every fan and paying customer of his team.

Mike Smith, completely in denial about the reality of the modern NFL, stupidly keeps on insisting that the Falcons must be a “run-first” team. But here’s the thing: he doesn’t allow the kind of defense to be played in order to win games that matter as a “run-first” team.

Mike Smith is Schottenheimer2.0. He refuses to adapt to the reality of the NFL and even worse, he refuses to adapt his coaching approach to the players he’s been given.

Case in point: Dunta Robinson, and OUTSTANDING cover corner, who is strong and tall, who can bump the hell out of a receiver at the line and then run with him down the field, is completely WASTED in Smith’s insistence that he play ten yards off the ball.

Robinson is NOT short and agile. He is NOT a cover-2 corner. But Smith REFUSES to use Robinson’s strengths to help the team be better. He’d rather Robinson continue to do poorly playing off the ball than allow a mixed-coverage scheme which allowed Robinson to play the man coverage he played so well in Texas while letting Grimes play the cover-2 his short, agile body type is made for.

Smith REFUSES to innovate. He REFUSES to do what it takes to win.

Basically, Mike Smith is the anti-Belichick, the anti-Payton, the anti-Coughlan.

And that is why I don’t trust this Koetter hire. It’s why the Falcons will either miss the playoffs outright next year or be one and done again.

Mike Smith is, to put it bluntly, a loser football coach. BVG got sick of it and left. BVG, whose Georgia defenses were aggressive and attacking, yet was neutered by Mike Smith here.

Dirk Koetter was largely a failure in college. His record against winning teams and against ranked teams was horrible. Look it up on Wiki. It’s right there for all to see. He was fired by ASU because he was a mediocre coach. His offenses in Jax were largely mediocre, and Garrard got worse every year under him.

Horrible hire. Arthur Blank is a liar. He doesn’t want to do what it takes to bring a Super Bowl to Atlanta.

Thus is our winter of discontent as sports fans in this wretched state come to fruition.

Let me ask a question: wasn’t BVG an aggressive coach in college before he had to run Mike Smith’s system?

That brings me to the actual culprit in this team’s refusal to be anything but vanilla on offense and defense:

Mike Smith.

Does anyone actually believe Steve Spagnuolo or Mike Nolan will come here if they’re forced to run defense the Mike Smith way? You know, all zone, all the time, no pressure, no innovation, no adaptation?

I know we’ll catch hell on here for saying this, but I’m glad that someone else realizes the issue with Duanta at corner! He isn’t a bust, he’s just been mis-utilized within BVG’s scheme, your exactly right, he’s a bump & run press corner, who when played within this type of scheme, might not quit be a lockdown cb, because i believe there’s only like 4 legit lockdown cb’s in the NFL, but he is definitely a # 1 cb, which admittantly he hasn’t been since he’s been a Falcon, but that because he’s been force to play in a zone scheme & he’s not a zone corner. Which is why I beg the question, can we do a sign & trade with Grimes to either package him with our # 2 this year to get a true legitimate pass-rushing DE opposite of ABE who we need to retain, or a stud Tackle who could fortify our O-Line. Because like it or not Falcons fans, Robinson isn’t going anywhere & Grimes is a free agent & the reality is that if our new DC plays a press man to man scheme which will place Robinson in a position to succeed, it will simultaneously place Grimes in a position to fail because Grimes is a zone cb, which is why he’s thrived under BGV. Either way, we have 2 starting corners who don’t go together! Any scheme we pick will play to the strengths of one while simultaneously playing to the weaknesses of the other! unless one side is allowed to play man to man & the other zone which i don’t envision working, so i think that this is an area that needs to be addressed. If we were to sign & trade Grimes, which I’m not even sure how that works in the NFL, maybe we move Franks up to the # 2 because he’s a cb in the same press/bump & run mode, then allow Owens who has grown to take over the nickel, or we pick up someone in the draft or FA.

I think I get it now. This is a 100% Smith hire of someone who will talk to placate the fans then do as Smith tells him. That means continue pounding the ball behind a line that can’t open holes or pass block very well. Would like to see what Ryan could do behind the kind of lines that let Brady, Eli and Flacco throw from a rocking chair. The DC will keep to a soft zone when we have some DB’s who could be man-to-man hitters. I’m so depressed.

While i agree that the DC is going to be a crucial choice, we need someone who grows our team on that side of the ball, but to point to the playoff game insisting that the D was even close to being the problem, even after giving up points in the 2cnd half is problematic in my estimation. Especially in light of our only points in the entire game being attributed to the D. Our D needs to grow but in that playoff game, almost all of the fault has to be placed on the Offense!!! No points…really & then on top of that, if the offense was moving the ball & putting up any kind of points than our D would have been in a better position to hold up because they would have been re-energized by points on the board & wouldn’t have been on the field all day long! Don’t get me wrong, our D does need work, significant work, but in the playoffs, that loss was not on them! Any other team who’s suppose to have a dominant offense would have advanced if their offense had to only score 23 points in the game. As a “offensive team” our offense has to be our calling card, not a liability, our defense is suppose to be that, as is the case with the Colts every year, the Pack, Lions, Saints, & Patriots this year, but that wasn’t the case with us, our Defense showed up, but our Offense was nonexistent!

You make a lot of sense most of the time but this time your crazy. Real Falcons Fans go by what you have done in the past. I am tired of people saying he did good in college. He has been in the pro a few years now and if you look at it his offense is boring just like MM was. I never saw Jacksonville spreading people out. I only judge by what I see and this guys offense was ranked last in the NFL this year and was never in the top ten any year( and I am not talking about the running game, i’m talking whole offense before you say something about MJD he is an all-pro). Also to you peoplle saying Robinson is an number one CB you are drunk. I have had season tickets for years and have seen him get burned in man all day long. All you guys backing him explain this to me, why is Grimes in the same defense that he is in but makes ten times more plays than him? They will throw at Robinson before they throw at Grimes explain that to me. He is garbage.

All I got to Say is Mike smith Has always had Total Veto over any play calling Offence or Defence and we always tried the same lame A** play’s at critical D&D. That’s why BVG and MM got up outta here . So Now It’s All on Him DO or Die time Mike!~

Good comments @ Nique………………………That’s why we need someone like Tebowwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww out there throwing that football on target and not freezing up like they walking on stilts or something . I watch Matt too many times now …….he takes the ball runs back, gets skittish and either takes the sack or goes to run and can’t run fast enough and throws the ball out of bounds and sometimes they will be a receiver wide open and he don’t even see the guy .
Give him one more year and we see more of the same, then its time for a change.
Its not the receivers as much as it is Matt and they have got to get some fresh blood to run the ball as Turner has carried the load for quite a while and its wearing him out too.

So let me get this straight, our OC was good enough to be head coach at the team of the OC that we just hired? Mike Smith obviously wants to be in Jacksonville again as he seems to not be able to cut his ties. What a horrible move for the team when there seemed to be better choices available. Why not go after someone from a winning organization? What has Jacksonville ever done? Smitty just quit and go back to Jacksonville where your heart is.

UGA Bug:

Let me ask YOU a question. Wasn’t Smith the D coordinator in Jacksonville before head coach here? From 03-07, Mike Smith, an NFL D Coordinator, led the Jacksonville Jaguars, in total defense, to 6th, 11th, 6th, 2nd, and 12th in the league. Also, other than his first year as coordinator, his defense was always in the top 7 in the league in sacks. So now, my question to you is, how do you blame a head coach, a defensive minded head coach with success in the PRO level, for a college d coordinator, who was out of his element, for not getting it done?

Mike Smith the real “culprit” because SMITH is too conservative? Yeah, because his track records surely supports that. Maybe do some research and stop blaming people simply because you think he’s a bad head coach. That’s all.

Let’s see, Ohhhhh YEAH…

At Georgia, BVG ran an aggressive, attacking defense.

At Jacksonville, where Jack Del Rio was the head coach, the Jaguars played aggressive, attacking defense.

In Atlanta, the Falcons have played an ultra-conservative, unaggressive defense that refuses to adapt.

Well, from this information, I would glean that the defense played in Atlanta is MIKE SMITH’S defense.

Why?

At Georgia, BVG was literally the head coach of the defense, much as Grantham is now.

At Jacksonville, Smith ran DEL RIO’S preferred defense, much like in Atlanta, BVG has had to run Smith’s über-conservative, vanilla, unaggressive defense, which we can infer is ALL Mike Smith and not BVG, because when BVG was “his own man,” he wouldn’t have been caught dead running this Soft Willie-like bullcrap defense.

See… all it takes is a little logic. Which I know is hard to ask of some here. :-)

@UGABugKiller We disagree a tad on the Boise State successes – I think he put a strong foundation in there, but I’d agree w/ a lot of your points on your 2:13. Although I freaked when I first heard about it, I’m holding judgement on this hire dependent upon who the DC is. If you’re right, that Smith will stay the course of stubborness, and we won’t see a Noles or Spags – then I won’t be renewing. If they do get a real world, 21st century D guy then it shows Smitty’s learned something > and that he’s willing to let his coordinators do their job, and players play to their strengths. That would be the most positive thing that could happen for this team.

Funny. Since Smith’s departure as Jacksonvilles d coordinator, they haven’t been higher than 17th, including stops at 23rd and 28th respectively in 09 and 10, until this year when they fnished 6th. Wasn’t Jack “Super Aggressive” Del Rio still there when Smith left? And yet they steadily digressed since Smitty left. Looks to me like Smitty had more to do with it than you think. Koetter seems to have a more open approach to play calling. MM was good, but got too dependent on a formula of run first to set up the the throw. Giants came is great example, first possession 2 runs up the middle than 3rd down pass. He would be creative at times but not at the most critical times. We will see with Koetter. Bigger issues on Def, this weekend show that Def is critical and how you play on Def is critical. Let’s hope they go aggressive on d coordinator. Saints and Packers both out so you can beat those teams with good d.

well give the guy a chance. As others have noted top coaches on other teams have gone to greatness. Also what big shot OC would want to leave for a worse team? You guys have to think. He’ll be fine. If we had better players (oline mainly) we would have beat the giants (yes I still think we should have won even after they manhandled the packers). Only so much this guy can do but he needs to be less predictable. Put the ball in Ryan’s hands more. Get a better oline and faster RB who can move laterally (or maybe if turner loses some weight?) and our off will be great.

Still need to focus on d though. They gave up waaaaaaay to many big plays this year and that hurt us despite some of the off lackings. D coord is key. And getting some good pickups with appropriate cuts.

Hey Einsteins….The best possible candidates might not want to come to a team where the head coach is on the hot seat. Would you? To a team where if they dont do a good job quick, their boss might be fired and they are out of a job before they get their boxes unpacked. Smith is NOT a bad head coach Einsteins. Are you crazy?! He is the BEST head coach in Falcons history! That is a FACT. It is not even CLOSE.

Smith is NOT an offensive coach and he relies on his offensive coordinator who FAILED this year. Smith does go for it on 4th down sometimes but the plays called were atrocious and again, that is not Smith. I would have taken the points against the Giants but I do like a coach who has the balls to do that! Dont you? Just not in the playoffs and not early when it can KILL your momentum and demoralize you!

Smith is NOT the problem. EVERYONE listen up and tell all your friends: the problem with the Falcons are the trenches on BOTH sides of the ball. Not enough blocking and not enough pass rush. It hurts the offense from making plays and it KILLS the rest of the defense from stopping plays. The answer does not get any more complex than that.

FIX THE OL AND DL AND YOU FIX THE FALCONS. IT ALL STARTS WITH THE LINES. ALWAYS HAS AND ALWAYS WILL AND THE FALCONS HAVE SOME WEAK LINKS ON BOTH LINES THAT KILLS THE ENTIRE UNITS.

SirReal – I think the death of the OC’s son in Green Bay played a pretty big part in their loss. Still, I get your point.

Jury’s still out on this OC. We aren’t 1 play (the screen) away from the super bowl just like we weren’t 1 player (Julio) away. Need serious work on consistency in run and pass.

DC has a bigger task than OC. DC doesn’t have anywhere near the players available…and many more holes to fill. Hope Falcons find a good DC rather than a head scratcher.

Don’t believe the hype! Jacksonville had a rookie QB who doesn’t have a strong arm and like Ryan has no accuracy on the deep ball. The Falcons will be predictable like Jacksonville. The Falcons need a hybrid West Coast offense to fit Ryan’s skill set.

I can assure you no DCs are worried about the new OC in Atlanta. Mike Smith prefers a tough grind it out team.

And Falcons please do not overpay for Lofton. He lacks closing speed and cannot play side-line to side-line. Look at San Fran LBs, they swarm, close on the ball. The rookie from GA, get him ready to start.

The question is simple: How much good does a playoff win do if you don’t win the super bwol? How is there any difference? This is to all the “every young QB but Matt Ryan” people. No playoff wins, Flacco has 5, Tebow has 1, but what good has that done ANY of them? Because guess what…..THEYREE ALL 0-0 in the Super Bowl. So why, then, does it matter that Flacco has 5 and Ryan has none? It doesn’t.

The battle between Bouldin and the corner that covered him from Houston was epic. Shows you what a big physical corner can do to a receiver on the line. Better than some octagon stuff I’ve seen. Dunta is a “weenie” by comparison.

What percentage is still to be determined.<<

@UGABugKiller – I like your passion but we don’t have the personnel to run man-to-man coverage right now. BVG left because he likes the college game better and enjoys the recruiting aspect of it. Dunta isn’t a great corner either! If he was that good, you’d be able to tell by his ‘Passes Defensed’ stat, which he had a total of 10, whereas, Grimes had a total of 14 and missed 5 games this year. Teams don’t throw Grimes’ way! They throw towards Dunta! So don’t you think if he was an ‘outstanding cover corner’ he would have more passes defensed? Dunta finished the season with the same amount of tackles as Grimes did too. As for Koetter, look at what he had to work with in Jacksonville! He showed an ability to adapt his offense to what were the strengths of the team, which was running the ball with MJD !!! I’ll admit that Mike Smith has been inept at times, but he isn’t a loser coach!!! He has a 43-21 record in his first 4 years as a Head Coach, and will only get better!!! Dimitroff and Smith are taking their time with the Defensive Coordinator position because that is more important than the OC role. We have a plethora of weapons on offense, so that is not our biggest problem. The defense is!!! You’re not the intellectual ninja you think you are! Calm down! Things will work themselves out. RISE UP!!!!

In fairness, Dunta came from a system where he was ma-to-man a lot of the time in Houston, and was often north of 60 and 70 talkes a season, minus the two years he only played 9 and 11 games. Defenses rarely threw to him while playing in Houston. He also played a lot of man coverage in college at South Carolina. Suffice it to say, zone scheming is not his game.

And also, I would say putting up a whopping zero points in the New Meadowlands in the playoffs while our defense held them off as long as possible does indeed indicate that the OC position was every bit as important, althought I do not think this hire is going to kill us like so many others do.

Turner
People on the O-line
Snell
Ovie
White
Douglas
Jones

all these and probably some others have gotten hurt, some trying to catch the stupid ball where he can’t put it in the breadbasket, others trying to block for him because he freezes up trying to hold on to the ball too long, some trying to chase down other throwed balls………..the point in this is……………you don’t have to be no Scientist to put one and one together to get the sum of 2 !

Let me ask you somethin Mikey, does every throw Brees makes hit a receiver in stride? Has ever a receiver in Green Bay had to jump and make a play on a ball (lookin at you Jordy Nelson)? Did Rob Gronkowski not have a great year, with more than a few of his touchdowns coming with YARDS AFTER CATCH because Brady had to throw a short route, and Gronk got thru the defense?

You gotta be kiddin me today man. Now youre trying to blame Matt Ryan for injuries suffered by people for doing what they get paid to do. Unreal

I don’t see what you see, friend. I see a talented QB who has been handcuffed his entire career by an inept offensive coordinator. If things remain the same this year, then I’ll have no problem admitting Ryan is just an average QB at best, but I think we will find out this year that’s not the case. And no matter how average he is or isn’t it’s still not his fault people get injured for doing their job. Green Bay lost THREE of their starting offensive linemen for a good part of the middle of the season, and I believe he also lost a receiver for a few weeks. Are you telling me that was Aaron Rodgers fault? Because if you say no, then you just contradicted everything you said earlier, and we both know the right answer is no, because it was jsut as much Rodgers fault as it was Ryan’s fault, which is NONE.

You guys are sniffing around the matter in Jacksonville as to why the defense declined. It is simple, Marcus Stroud (2008 trade to Buffalo) and teams doubled John Henderson relentlessly. Thought you didn’t respond to “homers” CGD?

Or is that only when you can’t give an opinion? You stay away from answers that involve actual facts right? Because they can’t be interpreted differently.

Here’s a question. How many times have you seen me say today that Ryan is an elite QB? You haven’t. Because I never said it. I said he has been handcuffed by a terrible offensive coordinator who hasn’t given him a chance to just go out and either win the game or lose it. It’s always been a product of Mularkey. THEN, I said, I’ll give him one more year and if, under a new system, he fails, then I will admit he is nothing but an average QB at best. But you see, that kind of talk isn’t good enough for you, because all you want to do is talk your nonsense and give your half hearted opinions that rarely make sense.

So its fine, you can think what you want, because at the end of the day I sleep perfectly fine, and never give you a second thought once I close my lap top. :)

@UGA Bugkiller,
Please quit talking about BVG at UGA. The NFL is NOT college football. BVG’s defense putting up good stats against Vandy, Ole Miss, and the other crappy schools don’t have any relevance with the pro game. I will guarantee that against the likes of Florida, Auburn, Tennessee, etc, UGA’s D was at best marginal. Week in and out in NFL, there isn’t very much of a drop off from team to team – hence BVG’s crappy stats every year. Open your eyes and realize it has nothing to do with Mike Smith. UGA played a zone blitzing scheme the whole time he was there with virtually no man-to-man press.

@NATIVEBIRD, the distance that Matt Ryan can throw has nothing to do with the size of his arm. It has to do with the tightness and anatomy of his rotator cuff, his core and leg strength. Your logic would dictate that Hulk Hogan could throw further and harder than John Smoltz or Nolan Ryan. If you want to talk about skinny arms but someone who has a cannon, look back at Pedro Martinez or Jim Kelly.

We all know in the business world that we usually hire people you worked with before, or there’s a trust factor there. Being said that, Mike Smith is on the clock. He fully knows per- Mr. Blank that winning in the post season is imperitive. I’m not concerned with the coordinator, my concerns are the execution of plays with the players. Coming out the gate with stupid penalties and the lack of focus, should not be tolerated. Now that the Falcons have changed coordinators, hopefully we can began the process of weeding out players who aren’t productive on the offensive side of the ball.

My $0.02-

The screen pass may work well with this team, but you need upgrades on the line. Matt Ryan would be perfect for that kind of attack.

Running, screens and outs and slants will make Matt Ryan look really good. But he needs to stop the insistence on vertical passing. Mularkey had many vertical passes in the package, but Matt Ryan would always either audible out of it or check down.

But we can probably dink and dunk our way to a playoff win and that would be a good system.

Draws on 2nd and 23 sometimes work. If you can pick up 10 or more yards then your third down is manageable.

Listen people, give the man a chance. There are 32 teams in the league, all 32 are trying to win. We did better than 20 other teams in the league. I think we are getting better thats all you can ask for.

Im now interested to see who the DC will be. I dont know if any of you noticed but we did blitz a little in that playoff game as well. I would like to see more than just a cover 2 zone on defense, unleash Spoon, he can get to the Qb on blitzes he did it in college. Also put Sidburry on the field more he got sacks and pressures when he finally got in the game.

Good article, but the offense is not the issue guys. Ok they were inconsistent, but that will change with a 7 month offseason. The elephant in the room is our defense. Trust me, Joe Flaco and Matty are the same players, with the same caliber of offensive players. Actually we might be better. The difference in teams are our defenses. . We have to get off the field on third down, we have to make solo tackles. Secondary must not blow simple assignments. I’m waiting in the DC choice and then Smitty is on the clock. Hold them accountable or get them out of here.

It’s a standard practice of demagogues, dictators, and tyrants–just keep saying it and it will become accepted as fact, regardless of the evidence to support it or not.

Ryan is a “dinky-dunk” passer? If you lined up every NFL QB in the Punt, Pass, and Kick Contest, and they just heaved it, Ryan would be right in the middle of the pack, at least. And he is superb at passes 30 yards and below (yes, 30, not 15 you numbskulls). Ryan is a top 10 QB. Look it up–#8 this season.

If Koetter is going to implement the screen, we have a problem with Michael Turner. He either can’t or won’t catch a pass. What are we going to do? We might as well change the names of Snelling, Quizz, Muhelli, and Smith to “Screen Pass I,” “Screen Pass II,” “Screen Pass III,” and “Screen Pass IV,” and put that on the back of their jerseys. Every time we put them in the game it will telegraph what’s up. You can only set someone up properly for a screen pass if they are part of the running game.

Remember the press conference–they talked about reducing Turner’s touches? They already knew Koetter was the hire.

Trade Turner while he some value left. Grab some O-Line.

I do agree though on one thing. If any OC or DC comes in to coach Atlanta and he not be given free rein to run his system it will be a flop. If it’s changed to any extent why change any coaching personal? Still, I would give the new hire the benefit of the doubt and just hope all the other scenarios are not the way it happens. The 2011 Falcons could have advanced further into the playoffs had they simply changed the configuration of their offensive line. In another post I offered moving Clabo to right guard where could use his size and strength and trying Baker at right tackle where he could use his limited athleticism and that would haved maximized chess pieces available to work with. The Falcons would have won more of the 4th and one scenarios in that configuration. In the spirit of caring please consider:

1. Jason Snelling has been a team player and deserves an opportunity to be lead back. If successful, perhaps he and Turner can switch roles and preserve Turners freshness and health.

2. Harry Douglas was sorely underused and I cannot understand why. Falcons would regret losing him.

Last but not least, the Falcons season ended like it started. The pursuit of quickly fixing the uncontrollable injury situation froze the Falcons into a temporary fix that with more imagination could have morphed into becoming even a little better. An alignment of Switek, Blaylock, Hawley, Clabo, Baker could prove to be solid. Blaylock, Hawley and Clabo at right guard(old position) would make a very solid nucleus whoever you have at the tackles.

I am in harmony with you on the importance of balance.

Peyton didn’t get his until his 6th season. Of Matt Ryan’s 3 playoff losses, 2 have been to the eventual NFC Champion and the Giants have a chance next weekend to extend that streak to 3. The Falcons aren’t losing to scrub teams; they’re losing to the best the NFC has to offer.

I think it’s important for the new offense to know how to create big plays. 2 of the 3 best offenses in the NFL, New England and New Orleans, have game-specific plans. They don’t have set player positions, route combinations and blocking schemes. Green Bay’s offense doesn’t try to out scheme. If you notice, they line up and run the plays without too much movement of players or formation. They will find the matchup that works, conbined with the fact that it’s hard to sack either of these QBs, Brady, Brees, or Rodgers.
Almost all of the personnel on the Falcons offense, with the exception of Julio and Jacquizz, has been around for a while. Everybody in the league knows how they break in and out of routes, how fast they hit the hole, etc. It is to the credit of Gonzales, White, Turner, etc. that they are still successful doing what they do. You have to put them in different positions on the field and match them up against lesser corners and LBs. Then Matt Ryan has to take advantage. That is the difference between a 8-10 win team, which the Falcons have, and the aforementioned teams, that have won 12, 13, and 15 games this year.

With this being a QB driven league, you have to give your QB the ability to take advantage of the defense’s weaknesses. That means putting your best WR on the 3rd or 4th DB, or putting your all-pro TE on the nickel safety, or getting Jacquizz in space against a SLB. And so on and so on….

Duanta Robinson is not as y’all are calling him a “bust”. In the past few seasons the league has dumbed down the hands off philosophy between receiver and defensive backs. In Houston he was considered a hard hitter with size and speed to go along with that. Again coaching is the key. Tim Lewis must bring his coaching techniques up to date. The defensive backs out there now must have a different level of ability and awareness to be able to defend a receiver. Closing speed, finding the ball and use of their hands makes the difference.Watch some of the plays from this weekend and you’ll see. A few years ago if you touched the receiver a flag was thrown. Not today. Find the ball, and use your hands for leverage and knock it down. The defensive staff will catch on. So will Duanta.

Why not do a ‘GREEEN BAY ‘ right/left ? (when the whole team goes one direction around the end position) . This play will guarantee at least a gain of 4″ for a first down, not the ‘run up the middle’ to gain -4″ for a 4th down.

My worst fears were realized with this coaching hire.
The uncharacteristic and lousy performances from the coordinators were the result of micro-managing by an overly-conservative head coach. Don’t tell me the fourth and inches calls mean he’s not conservative. They just mean he is dangerously weird.

People still moaning, groaning, whining, crying, and gnashing their teeth over the OC hiring.
I would like to see Dimitrioff build up a good solid OLine, that can hold the oppossing pass rush off of the QB, long enough for the recievers to run their routes(looked to me like Ryan usually got about 2 seconds), and can also open up running lanes, and that can push back the opposition’s DLine even a little bit(most of the time).
And then get an additional Runningback, that can give a different look other than a Turner power run up the middle(that was called on almost every running play.
And then, let us see what this new OC can do with it.

I dont know why so many here think its a given this guy will fail at OC. From what I hear from real football people, this Koetter was considered for a lot of OC coordinator jobs (Jets, Rams). He is well respected in the league. The funny thing is its the same folks who were unhappy when coach Smith was hired or when we drafted Ryan instead of Ellis. You just never know–do you? Jacksonville had poor talent last year which is why statistically they were last on offense. They had the league’s leading rusher when every defense knew they were going to run. Imposed their will!! Some folks want the “big names” but who were those people before they were big names? Gotta start somewhere. Wait and judge next season–gee give the guy a chance, besides dude already has the job–why worry about something you cant control?

Dirk has had a lot of good offensive experience and in Smitty and Thomas I trust. I believe that this is a definite upgrade but time will tell. I suspect that Dirk will do a better job leveraging all the good people on offense and reacting to game situations. The lack of effective screens, long pass blocking and draws made it tough for the O-line.
