FLOWERY BRANCH – Since returning from the playoff loss to the New York Giants, Falcons general manager Thomas Dimitroff has gone through two days of non-stop meetings with head coach Mike Smith and other members of the football operations department.

In a wide-ranging Q&A with The Atlanta Journal-Constitution Tuesday evening, Dimitroff discussed his spending on free agents Dunta Robinson and Ray Edwards, the Julio Jones trade, quarterback Matt Ryan, what the team will be looking for in a new defensive coordinator and how they’ll attain a breakthrough in the playoffs.

Q: As you’ve had some time to reflect, what are your thoughts on how the season ended?

A: We came into this season with very strong expectations both internally and externally. We made some aggressive moves both in the draft and free agency. Our expectations were for us to be very productive on both the offensive and defensive sides [of the ball]. We had a solid regular-season by finishing 10-6. We had an opportunity to get into the second season and once again, unfortunately, we came up short in the playoffs. That leaves us all, once again, with a bad taste in our mouths.

Q: How would you evaluate the money spent over the last few years in free agency on cornerback Dunta Robinson and defensive end Ray Edwards?

A: First of all, we were aggressive with the acquisition of Dunta Robinson. Our expectations were for Dunta to come in here and have a presence as a physical corner, help us make plays on the ball and prevent teams from racking up a lot of yards against this defense. Dunta has shown that he can produce for us. Unfortunately, this year our defense was inconsistent and at times so was Dunta. I still believe that we’re getting solid production out of Dunta Robinson in his game. With Ray Edwards, our thought was to bring a defensive end into our organization who brought elements of grit, toughness and competitiveness. We feel strongly that he has done that. He was outstanding [against] the run. He had a presence that we haven’t had at left defensive end in the run game this year. As per his pass rush numbers, obviously both he and we would have liked his pass rush numbers to up around the eight to 10 area. Unfortunately, that didn’t come to fruition. But again, we’re confident that Ray can come back next year with one more year under his belt; with a different system and produce for us.

Q: How do you evaluate the offensive line, especially considering a comparison to a year ago?

A: Unfortunately, for the offensive line we started out with challenges. We struggled in Chicago early on in the season and Matt [Ryan] was exposed to a number of hits that he shouldn’t [have been] exposed to. With that said, we settled down well. We made appropriate adjustments along the way during the season. That enabled us to protect Matt better with each game. We finished sixth overall in sacks allowed so we definitely saw a marked improvement as the season progressed. With that said, we still need to develop as an offensive line. We need to make sure that we get the toughness and physicality out of the offense that we desire from year-to-year. It’s a very, very important part of our offense. We need to continue to protect our franchise-quarterback and we need to continue to move the defensive line so that we’re able to provide holes and opportunities for our run game; be that six inches or six yards.

Q: What’s your view of Matt Ryan in comparison to the league’s best – Aaron Rodgers, Peyton and Eli Manning and Drew Brees?

A: I’m very impressed with Matt Ryan and how he continues to grow from year-to-year. I think he continued to grow this year. I thought he had a fine season. As you know, Matt had the franchise-mark for passing yards this year. I thought he navigated through some difficult times and some challenges with some of our inconsistencies with our offense this year. He stayed positive and he continued to produce well. I think in my mind, there is no doubt that Matt Ryan is one of the top 10 quarterbacks in the National Football League.

Q: Can the running game be what you need it to be with Michael Turner, considering all of his carries over the last few years?

A: Michael continues to produce well for us. He amassed over 1,300 yards for us for the second straight season. When we have called his number, he’s stepped up and got the tough yards. We’ll always continue to evaluate our running game to see what we need to [improve in order] to have a multi-faceted and versatile football team; both in the run and the pass game.

Q: In hindsight, was giving up all of the (five) picks for Julio Jones worth it?

A: We said when we made the very aggressive move on Julio Jones, that this was not only a move for the here-and-the-now. This was a move for long term success of this organization and I believe 100 percent in what we did being the right move for this organization at this time in our evolution. Obviously, Julio Jones had a standout season for a rookie. He had more touchdown grabs — [eight] — than any rookie this year. Despite missing three games, he had the most prolific season for a Falcons rookie in our team history. We are very confident that he’ll continue to grow with Matt in this offense. He’ll continue to be a standout football player and help us produce for years to come.

Q: Can this defense, as constructed, compete for the Super Bowl title?

A: I believe that our defense has continued to improve since 2008. Obviously, there are still areas that we can improve upon. We need to continue to pressure the quarterback. We need to continue to get our hands on balls and capitalize on interceptions. With that said, I love the tenacity of this defense. I’m encouraged by the direction of this defense. Like I’ve said since the very beginning in 2008, we will always continue to look to see where we can upgrade our talent across the depth chart and specifically on the defensive side of the ball.

Q: What will you all look for in your new defensive coordinator?

A: I appreciate everything that Brian VanGorder has done for this team over the last four years. He’s put his heart and soul into helping to create a very aggressive and passionate defense. I personally appreciate that. Moving forward, this defense needs to continue its growth and evolution as a passionate and fiery defense, one that is going to fly to the football, disrupt, be opportunistic and capitalized on opportunities to turn the game around; flip the game in critical situations. We’ll look for a coordinator who will compliment Coach Smith and his approach to putting that type of aggressive defense on the field. Obviously, that coordinator is going to work hand-and-hand with Mike Smith in helping to create a very aggressive defense. Our hope is that we will, in the very near future, land that individual who we think is very appropriate with his approach to helping this defense grow.

Q: What has to happen differently for the Atlanta Falcons to have a breakthrough in the playoffs?

A: As a general manager, it’s my responsibility to step back and analyze what went on throughout the football operations. Not only on-the-field, but off-the-field as well; in the personnel department and from a coaching perspective. I believe that myself and Mike Smith will have [many] discussions, along with Arthur Blank to discuss what we need to change and what we need to adjust moving forward. This team needs to continue to be much more focused and consistent on offense in all facets of the game. Both in the offseason and in-season. We need to be an opportunistic football team through and through. I am, as well as Mr. Blank and Mike Smith, are very driven to make the adjustments needed to provide the fan base with a team that they can be proud of.

DUNTA ROBINSON??? HOW WOULD YOU RATE HIS PLAY AND DID YOU PAY HIM TO MUCH??

Well here is Robinson in a nut shell. He can not cover my grandmother! He is always chasing somebody that just burned him for a TD! For him, I hope the word FREE AGENCY means he plays for free, BECAUSE IF YOU ARE PAYING HIM, YOU JUST GOT RIPPED A NEW ONE!! I would love to know how many times he got burned this year! He HAS TO BE THE MOST PATHETIC, AND I MEAN PATHETIC CB I HAVE EVER SEEN PLAYING IN THE NFL!

I hate all the anger at Mularkey. I understand it, and I’m glad we are getting a fresh start and he is too. I grew up a Steelers fan. I met Mularkey when he was a TE with the Steelers. My Dad and I went to training camp to meet the players. Good times. But I agree it was time for the Falcons & Mularkey to go their separate ways.
I met Mularkey at ESPN Zone a few years back. When I mentioned the Steelers, he talked about how great Chuck Noll was. I remember an interview with Noll after he retired. He said he watched tape of the Steelers players when he got the the job. Then he told the Rooney family the problem was the players weren’t very good. They couldn’t do their jobs good enough. Then he built the Steelers of the ’70’s.
I’ve been a season ticket holder for over 10 years with the Falcons. Smitty & TD would do well to follow what Noll did. Not the whole team, but the glaring weaknesses we have can’t be glossed over.
0-3 in the playoffs is so pathetic, I wasn’t even surprised this time. I expected it. 3rd quarter of the Giants game rolled around, and I thought “Yeah, I saw this before. Just like last year”. The players don’t focus!!!! I’m sure they feel bad and all after getting embarrassed. Then they remember the millions they earned this year and maybe it feels better. We need major changes if we expect a new result. I expected it last year and we didn’t get enough changes to matter. Everyone in the Falcons needs to be mad enough to change this!!! Or it will never change.

Sooo……interesting choice of running backs up for free agency this year. We all know its a matter of time (probably middle of next season) when turner just blows a wheel and can’t get it going anymore. He has digressed every year so far. He still racks up yards but its usually only on one long run late in the game when the D is gassed. He doesn’t hit the holes like he did in ‘08. He doesnt run with authority like he did in ‘08 (except when he kept planting Griffin fron Tenn on his butt). The list includes Micheal Bush, Ryan Grant, Lynch, Steve Slayton (who had a great rookie year for the Texans before Arian Foster came along), Matt Forte AND…….Ray Rice. Snelling is a free agent, so I would like to see us pick one of these guys up, with Slayton or Bush probably being the more realistic, unless Forte was that fed up with the way Chicago handled him during last season.

Also, some very good free agent O linemen out there after this season. Ben Grubbs (from Baltimore), Carl Nicks (from N.O. ), Adam Snyder (from SF), and Nick Hardwick (from S.D.). Moves have to be made. McClure should be finished, If anything should be allowed to stay on to be a vet leader for young guys, but we should bring in Hardwick to take over at center. Not sure that i like Hawley at the Guard position either, which would be where Nicks or Grubbs would come in. Blalock and Clabo should be safe *for now* and Svitek did a great job coming in this year. I think he will be even better next year. Sam Baker….adios.

As far as Dunta is concerned, he is a physical corner. Physical corners don’t do well in a soft zone like we had. Letting go of Dahl was a huge mistake. We need a tough O-line and Dahl embodies that. O line problems occured all season and even though Ryan had pressure on him every game, he still performed better than ever and can grow into an eliete QB. He normally doesn’t throw deep but he showed more this year that he can than ever before. As Ryan gets more comfortable with Julio, he will get better at throwing deep. Ryan has improved every year and as long as he continues to improve, I say keep him. He is very calm under pressure and a good clutch QB. Julio will always be a good WR for us and I feel he is more athletic than AJ Green and everything AJ has that Julio doesn’t is learnable, and one day Julio will be better than AJ ever can, and will become a HOF’er. Julio will aslo force Ryan to throw deep and as I said before will open him up to be a better QB. If you look at our deep threats until this year we didn’t really have any and Julio was working on his ball catching all season so it didn’t make sense to go to him more than we did. MM was too conservative for us and thank god he is gone. A more aggresive OC is what we need with less reliance on Turner. Turner produces good yardage though. What was he 3rd in rushing yards this year? You can’t argue with that. Snelling is a tough back as well and has good hands to catch down field for a bigger running back. He is a good option to back up Turner. But again with our receiving weapons we need to become a pass first team with a solid run game to boot. Defensively I think Dunta and Grimes are still the best CB duo in the league. Like I said we should drop the soft zone and go to man to man. Dunta will show his presence if we do and Grimes will be a great man to man corner. I almost think we should go 3-4 and be more aggressive in our blitz packages. This will give us more options for the blitz and will be harder to read so we can get more pass rush going. We would definitely need a NT if we go 3-4 but I think a lot of the other elements are already there. Spoons can play inside or outside which will give our D even more deception. All in all we just need more aggressive OC and DC and to keep getting better talent. TD has done a real good job so far in my opinion.

We have 8 million defensive linemen and about 5 linebackers, only two of which (’Spoon and Lofton) are superb athletes and, of those two, only one of which who is a good enough athlete to rotate in and out in a 3-4 scheme (I’m talking about Weatherspoon). So how would you expect this to work? No solid linebackers in free agency this year except MAYBE Mario Williams provided he can stay healthy, which he has not yet shown since getting to the NFL, and we have all of what? Five draft picks? No, the 3-4 is not the answer for us, not at this point in time. But I do agree we should play more of a man-to-man and press coverage defense.

I don’t know that a “pass first” offense is the right thing to do either. Not yet. This team is built to be balanced. Last season we tried to run more than we should have. The O line was very inconsistent and we put too much pressure on them after making changes and trying to swap players around. Throwing too much seems to get the whole team out of rhythym, and throwing too little takes the game completely out of Matt Ryan’s hands. We need a creative O coordinator who knows how to actually game plan, something Mularkey was not good with at all.

If they sit on their hands and don’t make major changes, I can go ahead and predict right now that they will miss the playoffs next year. New Orleans is going to remain elite and Carolina is about one or two good draft picks and free agent signings on defense away from leapfrogging the Falcons in the division.

If they insist on continuing with the same offensive skill position personnel, the least they can do is acquire a playmaker in the secondary and overhaul the interior O-line. Easier said than done with no draft picks and the best defensive player a free agent.

I agree with some here Mularky was part of the problem with his questionable play calling but one would have to think he’s not the main problem. The guy wasnt bad in Pitsburgh with Big Ben a good Qb with a good arm.I think M.Ryan is the problem on Offense here in Atl,the guy plays scared. There should’nt be a reason why this Offense shoud’nt have sucess.I agree the O-line is not the best but I bet you put a above avg Qb back there you would hv better results with our weapons on offense than weak a** M.Ryan.

I would like to see the falcons next offensive coordinator be more aggressive with the play calling, the falcons have too much talent not to be on top of there division, mixing the plays up throw deep, run, short passes etc, and when it comes down to 4th and inches stack the line but throw a pass, the falcons have the fastest WR in julio jones, who can catch him and you have roddy white, use them, what greenbay is doing to the league, the falcons can do it also, by spending the ball around, thinking outside the box keep the defensive guessing.

Najeh,
The only skill position we need an upgrade at is RB. Its obvious that they don’t trust Tip Toe Turner in short yardage situations as Mike Smith basically said that we tried two sneaks because Snelling had a broken jaw. Roddy, Harry, and Julio can get the job done. If we can just fill in the WR’s after them with “coachable talent” and not run blocking WR’s we should be all set.

ohhhhhhhYeah, this is a passing league with a premium on scoring points. The rules are set up to facilitate the pass. Our problem is that our coaching staff failed to recognize that over the last two years. I’m not sure how competitive we can be next year with 2 new coordinators but reading between the lines, Blank and TD are done with the soft zone coverages and lack of agressive blitz schemes.

Gentlemen, we actually got quite a lot from this interview. You just need to know how to read corporate-speak.

‘Edwards was good against the run’ is corporate-speak for: ‘He was brought in here to rush the QB and did not do that, so, no, we are not happy.’

‘We need to make sure the O-line has toughness and physicality,’ means that the O-line does not have toughness and physicality.

The repeated references to a new D-coordinator who will bring aggressiveness and game-changing aggressiveness are a pretty bold slap at BVG, don’t you think?

He is obviously worried about the excessive focus on Turner within the run game.

So, lots of information there. But, you don’t just come out and dump on MM and BVG in an interview. It ain’t professional. I was actually a little surprised that there was so much content in this interview.

Mike Bullarkey play calling was so PREDICTABLE Ray Charles could see it. IE: ( 4th and 1 NOBODY IN BACKFIELD TO CONFUSED THE DEFENSE) 3. Our Receivers drop balls like it was a contagious Virus. 4. Last but not least Our DEFENSE was WORN out they were on the field almost the entire game. I really think Mike Smith should be Fined for allowing his DEFENSIVE COORDINATOR AND OFFENSIVE COORDINATOR screw him over that way and EMBARASS him in front of the entire USA. Great point Dash. That’s exactly how I read it. hiramsaint, last I checked Micky Loomis (2002-present) is the same GM who thought Jim Haslett was a good enough HC to give an extension and thought Aaron Brooks was the future at QB for the Saints. If it wasn’t for that disasterous 3-13 season in 2005 Tom Benson would have never required Loomis to blow things up and start over. Payton and Brees at the time were low budget risks. Matter of fact, Loomis was so unsure of what he was going to get from Brees that he signed him to what was essentially a one year contract. No one could have foreseen Payton and Brees being the perfect offensive combination of coach and QB.

Defense I would like to see falcons hire Mike Nolan, a proven DC. He has turned around defenses in SF, Denver and Miami. He can find pass rushers, and a defense that can get off the field. I know its not Mike Smith system. We have tried Smith defense for four years, does not work against Elite teams, as Pack and Saints.Nolan’s defense is close to Gregg Williams and Don Capers.
